this video just saved me from a huuuuge headache! thank you so much for posting! i have this style of cabinets in my 1960s kitchen, and can't afford a complete renovation, so hopefully this does the trick to give it a little boost! Now let's see if i can find these hinges at the hardware store...
These hinges are Salice 3/8" Lipped Door Hinges. Search for them online, they are available through a few woodworking retailers, but not in the big box stores. Big box stores only carry overlay cabinet hinges. Hinges for any style of overlay cabinets will not work with lipped doors. Trust me, I just tried on my doors
Oh my gosh!!! Thank you for this video. It’s validating because I took on a repair project in the 60’s built home my parent’s just bought. Cabinetry “experts” at the big box stores told me I didn’t have cabinets with the features I was describing and gave me advice for incorrect hinges time and time again. The overhang on the mounting side varies not only from the L and R, but from Upper and Lower, so I have to build out at 4 different dimensions. The doors have that weird partial inlay AND partial overlay and although I’ve DIY’d many a home project before with relative ease- this one has been shoved into a corner for the last 2 years and mom has been using her cabinetry without doors because I refuse to put those god awful barrel hinges back on….mostly because I already cut the holes for the new hinges (aka ruined the doors). Anyways, it’s nice to be validated and shown that my instincts were correct. I’ll finish the project this weekend and she’ll be thrilled. I just wanted to wait until I could make sure there wasn’t a “better” or more “proper” way to do this.
I know that this video has been out there for some time, but I also need to know which Blum hinge is being used so the I can convert my old cabinets. Please add this to you video to help us who have search high and low for a way to fix out cabinet doors. Thanks.
Sir, I would like to know what kind of euro hinges did you use, because there is many to choose for overlay or half overlay, but this particular 3/8 lipped partial inset not!. where did you purchace them, how much they cost? the only one that I found are at a Salice webside for $30, wich is too expencive for my old kitchen:) Please, specification of those hinges!!!!
Too bad this guy doesn't reply. I need to know how far from the outer edge, and how far up the door are the holes bored? Also, the make and model# of the hinge would be helpful, for sure. I see Mark Jenkins (commenter) listed Salice 3/8" Lipped. That seems correct as my doors (similar to Bill Tiemann's) are 3/8" inset hinges. I will try to find the Salice hinges and use 3" as my up-and-in location. Hopefully, I can figure it out.
Hi Mr. Tiemann. What is the particular make / model of the hinge you used? I have 3/8 inset doors that I would like to hinge in this manner. Thanks for your time.
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I didn't see your question until now. If I understand you correctly, the European hinge has a cup that is recessed into the door. You just need to measure the depth directly from the hinge and then set your drill press to stop at that depth. If you were referring to the clips that the hinge attaches to inside the cabinet; due to the unusual nature of this particular hinge I had to go with trial and error until I figured out the proper depth inside.
Search "Hinge and plate 3/8" lipped door hinge" (plus they likely have generic too if you look). You likely won't have to block like the guy in the video did. DIY your own doors is O.K. to paint, but honestly doors with hinges prefab on the internet are cheaper than having some "professionals" change to do the work. Heads-up to youtubers, NEVER hire subs from big box stores for anything as far as I can tell to date.
What model hinge are you using? I am currently updating similar 3/8" inset lipped cabinet doors and I'm having a difficult time finding am ideal concealed hinge.
@@johnkoppin6888 Don't know number. You can just call Rockler Woodworking in California and ask. I was also able to pick up some conversion hinges at a small supplier locally but they didn't know what I was talking about for a while. They had to order them.
This is a great video for someone who already knows how to do a conversion, but why would that person be watching the video? There is no explanation for what types of hinges to get, how big the hole should be, how deep, how he figured out how how big a piece of wood he needed to fill the gap against the side of the cabinet (wouldn't pretty much any conversion need that?)... Kind of useless and the music is louder than the guy.
Hi Bill - Sorry I think I commented on the wrong video.. Could you please help with my project that has the same cabinet doors... I am struggling to find the right hinges.. My door keeps hitting the frame.
It is so funny, I was looking for video that shows how to change from the new European hinges to traditional hinge. And to my surprise I got the opposite. Our church, homes, business, and work place cabinets have all fallen apart because of these new European hinges. Please send those back to Europe where they come from.
Does not help me because of no close ups. Did not show anything helpful. How do you fix the hinges to the other parts of the cabinet. Not a good video.

We found some at Rockler, a woodworking supply store.
Thank you.
Yes Sir, Just tried myself. Found out the hard way.
What did you end up going with?
@@kristiannunez6186 I bought the Salice hinges I mentioned above.
Thank God for this video. I’m running into this issue right as we speak.

Well you went over all of the obvious as many videos do on here. What was the hole diameter / depth / and spacing from edge????
How big were the extra pieces of wood that you ad to install to the frame?

did you ever figure out what hinge this was?
Thank you so much for this video. Saved my life or really my mind. LOL

how do you get the proper depth and measurement for the cabinet clips that join the door to cab?
Rockler woodworking has this conversion hinge. Directions come with it in terms of depth and placement. Expensive though at that location.

thank you for your information, I'm preparing to do a budget remodel for a friend with these type doors. Appreciate your feedback.

Rockler woodworking has those conversion hinges; they cost about $40 a piece so can get very expensive but they do modernized the look.
@@raywright2401 could you send me the hinge number so I can buy some from Blum or Rockler? It’s not mentioned in the video.

Good video.....Dreadful Jazz music to drown out commentary
The music is too loud.
It's also gay!
Disagree. Cool music. Very classy.
+Twister051 Well then, you must be gay.
Thank you

I want my view back. You didn't show mounting the hinge to the cabinet.
Kill the music! Its not helping and is a big distraction. Rules of editing, wouldn't call it the first but it's high on the list.
Of course we know it can be done but without the hinge make, model, part # and or size the video is just useless.
