Hi Mary, I recently learned from your channel that I have a forceful letdown and oversupply. My baby is 4 weeks tomorrow and this week I started breastfeeding exclusively during the day but keeping the bottle feeding at night. I was bottle feeding during the day while we were both learning breastfeeding. At night she gets 2.5oz and takes 10 min (Comotomo bottle) and during the day she sometimes has very short sessions all day. This is my feeding log for today so far… (she’s had already 6 wet/dirty diapers) 500pm-05 L (5min) 357pm-403 R (6min) 345pm-50 R (5min) 325pm-28 R (3min) 315pm-18 R (3min) 301pm-08 R (7min) 220pm-23 L (3min) 218pm-19 L (2min) 212pm-14 L (2min) 159pm-202 L (3min) 132pm-138 L (6min) 1236pm-41 L (5min) 1221pm 25 L (4min) 1157am-1202pm R (5min) 1037am- 41 R (4min) 1010am-1014 R (4min) 849am-855 L (6 min) 815am- 822 L (7min)
That’s looks great! I know that she’s at the breast quite often and it can be tiring and having her be on there for such a short amount of time can make you worry that she’s getting enough but when a mom has a forceful let down baby is usually good at getting milk in a shorter amount of time. You can see that because she’s already had plenty of wet diapers today❤️ It would be best to feed her the bottle using a Paced feeding Heres that video th-cam.com/video/NIDWewaslOQ/w-d-xo.html
When i gave birth i didnt have nipples that's inverted nipples so my baby wasnt able to eat, but am sha forcing him,the problems is that my baby have not yet fat, still looking like a newborn, he is 2month now
Some babies are smarter than others and it can be very normal. Has he been weighed at the doctor’s office? What has the doctor said about his growth? Is he having 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours?
if we choose to hand express instead of pumping, how long should we hand express? or is it until it slows down? Hand expressing is better than pumping, right? Thank you for your videos!
Hand expressing is better because it adds more breast stimulation. You can use a pump too but add breast massage before and during the pumping. For a full pumping session that is in place of a feeding session, you should usually (unless you fave a forceful letdown/oversupply or are engorged) pump or hand express for about 3 to 5 more minutes after you no longer see drops. Are you expressing milk to be bottled fed to baby?
My question is simple… if I’ve had this condition with one child does that mean I’ll have it with every child?? Below is my breastfeeding journey with each of my kiddos…. I’ve nursed three children before my current newborn - who is now 12 weeks (so actually all four of my kiddos). With the first baby, I was a full time teacher and exclusively breastfed for the first 3 weeks, then supplemented because of jaundice. I’m after returning to work at 6 weeks ppt, I pumped at work while nursing at night. Needless to say exhaustion got the best of me and we went on a journey of only supplementing a few bottles a day to exclusively formula feeding after 6 months. Never knew about oversupply with baby #1. With baby #2 I was a stay at home momma and was determined to make this breastfeeding thing work for the entire year. Money was the #1 reason for that. However I grew to live breastfeeding and my baby and I definitely had ALL the signs of oversupply. She gagged, bit me, and I was normally engorged and lots of projectile spit up. She was constantly hungry, like every 2-3 hours on the dot. I leaked for months and months. And I ended up feeding her plus pumping about 3-4x per day. And no less than 2. ALWAYS right before bed (even if I had just fed her just before that & right when I woke up engorged which us usually ended up being around 5am every morning. I could pump like 12-13 oz each morning before feeding her and then turn around and feed her 1.5 hours later and she’d be satisfied but not as fussy at the breast. Looking back i FOR SURE had the oversupply and forceful letdown. Nursed her for one year. She was a fast weight gainer. I had milk spraying everywhere and a very scared and upset baby if I did not pump before the morning feed every day. I used the milk in the burp cloth trick like every day at most feeds. Baby #3 was a slow weight gainer. No jaundice BUT we did have to supplement with formula because she didn’t gain her birthweight back. This child nursed to eat but didn’t overeat and I could hardly get her to nurse. She was a scrawny thing. Seemed like she was on strike now that I think about it because she would eat a bit and then be done (maybe because of the let down. But not completely sure) Baby #4 (now) had jaundice at birth and went under bilirubin lights for 24 hours on her third day of life. She was a very very lethargic eater and I had to start pumping at that point and try to feed her, which I couldn’t and my dr suggested that I push the formula for that 24 hour period and just pump so we could flush the bilirubin out because her levels were so high (17/18). The first week of life was filled with dr appts and constant trying to nurse the baby and staying awake for days in end with two hours of sleep per four days or something like that. She wouldn’t nurse well because she’d fall back asleep. Finally got her over the jaundice but dr said we need to supplement with formula 2 oz after every feeding because she wasn’t getting enough fat from my milk probably (symptom was low weight gain) so I’ve been on a journey to try and get back to 100% breastmilk ever since and I have considered exclusive pumping and I tried it for two weeks but it’s so much extra work and I missed nursing baby. I still give baby 1 formula bottle per day about 3-4 days per week. Lately I’ve been pumping 2-3x per day (once before bed, and once in the middle of the night or sometime in the morning (when baby is still asleep) so that I have the option of giving her a breastmilk bottle OR starting a freezer stash. I have started a very small stash of 32 oz. When pumping exclusively I thought I would be able to store up more milk. But I could never pump enough to stay ahead of the curve. Since starting that journey with pumping a month back or so ive been able to keep a steady flow/stash in the fridge if 4-5 four oz. Bottles. I am still trying to figure out if I’m going to be at home or if I’m returning to full time work three 12 hour shifts per week. I do not want to run into oversupply. However if I pump 2-3 x per day and feed her then I’ll have either bottles to store up/feed her from freezer milk down the line. I just down want to make things worse (because of oversupply).
If you have FL/OS, you will definitely have it with every baby but every baby will handle it differently. The things that mom is doing can definitely affect it. If you’re doing much extra pumping, that will make the condition worse and it will affect baby’s weight. Babies of moms with this condition are usually high weight gainer or low weight gainers (more often low weight gainer). This is mainly because of fat content but also, how baby eats. If you’re doing extra pumping, you’ll make more volume of milk. Then your baby can’t eat that large amount of volume. This makes baby not take in enough fat. Or baby eats a huge amount because they are trying to get enough fat (or their tummy hurts from the extra foremilk because foremilk has so much more lactose) then they may spit up a lot. Having a FL/OS is a struggle but with being constantly aware and tweaking, it’s very doable. Having this condition isn’t going to have big long term affects on baby but it does make things uncomfortable and short term difficulties. Also, keep in mind that babies from one month to 6 months old normally eat an average of 24 ounces every 24 hours when eating from the breast. Baby should be “pace fed” when fed with a bottle. if baby isn’t pace fed, mom may think she’s not pumping enough because baby will want more. If baby eats fast (from boob or bottle) they don’t know when they’re full and they get over full. Then baby will eat more because breastmilk (or eating in general) is soothing (breastmilk has natural painkillers in it 😃) Pace feeding is where you give the bottle for a minute (until baby slows down a little). Then take the bottle away for a few seconds while you burp or play with baby. Take several little breaks through a feeding. If baby cry’s, give the bottle right back. Thats probably more than you wanted to know lol. Does that help a bit? ❤️
Love your videos! My baby is just over a month old. I was exclusively pumping as she had jaundice, however a few days ago began exclusively breastfeeding. She’s doing really great but I had one question about feeding on the 2nd side. If she’s only feeding on that side for only a few seconds, should I pump to even it out OR does alternating which breast goes first the next feed solve this? Thanks so much!

I feel so confused because in my sons 2nd week we were getting over 6 wet and poopy diapers but he wasn't gaining weight. He was only 5lbs and 1oz so i got scared and started supplementing. He is 4 weeks now and is 5lbs and 11oz. I mostly breast feed and give 2-3oz total of formula a day. I feel like i need to give more formula because the weight gain is slowing again. I breastfeed all day and night. He is always on the breast, yet i never seem to increase supply. Even after hours of cluster feeding. I feel so lost. He was a great latch from the start and everyone i think things are going great we have a disappointing weigh in.
What is your doctor saying about his weight? Is he still having lots of wet diapers? Just to confirm: He was 5lbs 1 oz at 2 weeks and he’s now 5lbs 11 oz at 4 weeks? If that’s correct, that is a very low weight if he was a full term baby. Was he a premature baby?
@marycahillclc my doctor tried to be supportive of my desire to exclusively breast feed but recommended I do one formula night feed to let me rest. She said rest would help my supply. Unfortunately, I don't have the support to have someone do a night feed so I just supplement when he seems starved after a breastfeed, typicallyin the evening. . She is happy now that he is gaining weight and has no other advice. My son was induced at 37 weeks due to my hypertension at 5lbs 7oz. By day 5 he dropped to 4lbs 10oz and 4 days later he was 4lbs 15 oz. It took 5 days to get to 5lbs 1oz where he stalled for 4 days before I finally supplemented. My son has 1-3 pees every feed (8-10 feeds a day) and only poops once a week now, the formula sends to be stopping him up.
@@abigailloar956 Getting more rest is important for you but having baby on the breast as long and as often as possible is best for supply. You do want to supplement him if he needs more. His weight is so low that I would have him monitored very closely. Do you have a lactation counselor near by to meet with?
@marycahillclc I take him to get weighed at the lactation place every Sunday and Wednesday. He only went from 5lbs 10oz to almost 5lbs 12oz from last Sunday to yesterday which is why I wonder if I should supplement more. He didn't even gain 2oz in 3 days. He cluster fed for 7 hours today, and feeds every 2 hours typically so I am always getting stimulated and emptied. The lactation women don't really seem to have much advice other than to pump on top of everything but I really don't have the time or a pump. They seem doubtful of my supply and concerned. They seemed more supportive of me supplanting than my pediatrician, which makes me think I'll never exclusively breastfeed
@@abigailloar956 Hand expressing can actually get more milk out than a pump once you get used to doing it. This video will tell you how to breastfeed and supplement to increase supply. I’ll link it below. His weight gain is very concerning to me at this point. He should be gaining at least 5.5 ounces a week. I would add more supplements but try to do it like the video below. In a feeding, you nurse on both breasts, then a little supplement then both breast then more supplement. Hi..m new mom and m so worried.. my baby act like he is hungry all the time... He's also feed the mother milk and drink 60ml milk powder sometimes...but rather than he always act like he is hungry... He feed 20 to 30 mint but still hungry... Plz hlp me m realy tens...
It’s hard to be a new mom, it’s so scary but it will get easier. 💕 When you give formula, it starts to cut down on your supply but I know it’s scary if it seems like baby isn’t getting enough. You can do a weighted feed to see how much baby is taking in. This means that you weigh baby before and after a feeding. 1 to 3 ounces is normal after 1 month old. You can also count wet diapers. If baby is having 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours, you know they are getting enough. Babies are often fussy in the evenings because they are tired, over stimulated. How old is baby? How many wet diapers is baby having?
My baby is 4 week old, she is always sleepy and tough to wake her up. I am breastfeeding and giving pumped milk as supplement. How to make my baby nurse only from breast. What’s the time interval to feed. Every 2 hours after the previous session. She is still sleepy. Can I do 3 hours after the previous session
She should be starting to stay awake a little longer now. Sometimes it helps to take baby’s clothes off while nursing. When baby is warm, they fall asleep easily. The feeding times are different for every baby. It’s best to feed on demand. Let baby tell you when she is hungry. For some babies, it’s 2 hours but others it’s 3 hours. If you’re concerned that she’s not getting enough from the breast alone, count wet diapers. If she has 6 or more every 24 hours, then you know she’s getting enough. How often are you supplementing her with your pumped milk?
@@marycahillclc I am supplementing when ever I nurse, but I want to feed effectively from breast. She is awake and playing after every feed. But she is sleepy during the feed. Pls share your thoughts and help me
@@vasanthi83 That’s very normal for her to be falling asleep during a feeding. If she’s alert and not showing signs of hunger, then you can trust her that’s she’s full. To wean off of the supplement bottles. Nurse her, then give her half of the supplement bottle, then back to the breast, then offer the 2nd half of that bottle. She will start to not take that 2nd half of the bottle after a few days. Keep cutting the formula in half. You’ll still offer it to her but she probably won’t want it because your supply will increase from having her back at the breast. You can know that she’s getting enough, if you see 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours. ❤️
Is it ok if am half breast feeding and half using pump and bottle ? Also should we using pump to take out conplete milk to increase production ? I think baby doesnt sucks all the milk im feeding session .
How old is baby? It’s good to get breastfeeding established before giving a bottle. Usually around 3 weeks old, baby has breastfeeding down well enough to add the bottle a little. Start slow with the bottle in the beginning. It’s best to feed pumped milk, using a Paced Feeding. If you’re not familiar with that, I’ll link a video. It will help baby to eat from the bottle at the same speed as from the breast. In the first couple of months, your breast may feel a little bit full still after a feeding. This full feeling is inflammation of the tissue around the milk ducts. If you add extra pumping, that isn’t needed, it will make it worse. If you feel like you need to pump after a nursing session because you are uncomfortable, just pump a small amount to make yourself comfortable. Staying overly engorged can lead to clogged ducts. You can apply cold compresses after a nursing session and take ibuprofen to help reduce the inflammation.

Hi Yvette & Ava! All moms have one side that produces more than the other but some moms don’t notice it.
Increasing Your Milk Supply and Weaning off of Formula

Hi..m new mom and m so worried.. my baby act like he is hungry all the time... He's also feed the mother milk and drink 60ml milk powder sometimes...but rather than he always act like he is hungry... He feed 20 to 30 mint but still hungry... Plz hlp me m realy tens...
It’s hard to be a new mom, it’s so scary but it will get easier. 💕
When you give formula, it starts to cut down on your supply but I know it’s scary if it seems like baby isn’t getting enough.
Here’s that paced feeding video and one on engorgement

Hi mary, i have my right side that have more milk than the left side what can i do to increase, i give my daughter the left side she still feel hungry after we’re done can you help me please
Hi Yvette & Ava! All moms have one side that produces more than the other but some moms don’t notice it. It’s really nothing to worry about because the over producing side makes up for the under producing side.
How old is baby now? Do you usually nurse baby on both sides? How do you know one side makes less? Is it just that baby prefers one side?
@@marycahillclc my baby is 1 month 3 weeks, when i pump i see less amount and sometimes i feel that the left side is very light and smaller than the other. The left side makes 80 ml and the right side makes 130 ml and sometimes more
@@yvettad700 80 ml and 130 ml in 1 pumping? That’s a large amount. That sounds like a forceful letdown/oversupply.
How often do you pump? Are you pumping in place if a feeding to give your milk in a bottle?
@@marycahillclc in the night i give her a bottle of my breast milk to make sure she eat good before sleeping and i pump to not shift it, but the issue is about the other side is it normal to make only 80 ml
@@yvettad700 it was the same for me with my first and my second now. My left has 80 and my right has 120/130ml. I give her the left if she wants to comfort feed. Also, I let her feed on both most times for full feeds. I start with the left and let her fully feed till she starts refusing it. I push it back a couple of times then move her to my money 💰 maker. Boob with more milk. Most evenings I start with money maker as I figure it still has more and she's fussier sometimes. We're only 2 months 3 weeks in currently so this may change for me.
