Well, at least they tried. They should’ve split this into two parts. Why do studios feel the need so shove so much into one film? This would’ve made a better tv show.
Funny, I completely agree on Leon and Wesker. It really felt like they made Leon deliberately stupid just to prop Claire up in every single scene, while Wesker looks feels like someone you'd go out and have a beer with. Even when he puts on those sunglasses, he looks like a college frat boy who got hungover. Oh, and it does feel like Chris was also dumbed down a bit. Not as much as Leon, but it's there.
And yet still more bearable than everyone being dumbed down and or weakened to make Alice look even more ridiculously powerful/badass in the Anderson films
My biggest problems with the film were a lack of creatures besides zombies, a rushed ending, Leon, and the fact that they smashed the first two games into one. Birkin was completely underutilized. Thought it would’ve been much better had they split this one into two films.
I agree but now the next movie should be with nemesis tracking down the team due to knowing too much information about umbrella, so like they did with RE 1,2 in one movie they can do RE 3,4 in the next obviously nemesis hunt on Jill valentine would have to be in a different environment but umbrella moving location could set up well from RE 4 game location. 👍🏼😀
That's what threw me off about the casting. I'm not one of those people who bitched and moaned about the race change but Beck from Victorious is Leon!!!!? Why!!!!????
To address your “what can you adapt now?” I think they’ll adapt Code Veronica next. You see Alexia and Alfred Ashford on the reels of children they experimented on when Leon and Claire get to the basement of the orphanage.
Been waiting patiently for this review. Can't wait to see this and judge for myself. Awesome review Cody. Thanks for your hard work giving us grest content.✌
I disagree. If it was “all for the fans” they would have casted better and not had the characters do things completely out of character. (When compared to the games) This film did some cool things, but ultimately failed FOR ME.
The casting was not the issue. The issue what that so much effort wss put into easter eggs and things related to the game that the pace of the movie is off making it impossible for the character to look convincing
Jill Valentine was nothing like she is in the game not only for appearance but also personality. She would NEVER pull out a gun on another cop for one like she did in the diner, she was never in love with Wesker that was just plain stupid, also she was never “a bit crazy” (they described her that in BTS video) asking people “what the best way to die would be?” They completely ruined her character and also she had all of like a couple kills in this movie and barley any screen time. Sienna Guillory as Jill from re apocalypse was far superior in terms of writing and looks. She was everything Jill Valentine was suppose to be and also had more then a couple of kills, she was a big part of that movie and the whole reason Alice was even able to escape at the end. Not only did this film destory Jill which is odd because Paul Anderson was involved in this film, they didn’t do Claire justice at all. She is suppose to be more of the rescuer only getting involved in confrontation when necessary (like Leon describes her in degeneration) and Ali larter really embodied that. Claire in this movie is literally Alice - the powers. Don’t even get me started on Leon (second time leon has been fucked over in the films) or Wesker. Chris was the only character done correctly in this film. Also re1 and re apocalypse just did the entire raccoon city incident a lot better. It shouldn’t be jammed into one film. It didn’t work the pacing. And like why was all the zombies going bald? Like their was just weird stuff in the movie. Why did irons have Claire’s gun. Why was Claire using the shotgun and not Leon like in the remake, why did Wesker play the piano instead of Jill since Jill is the one who played it in the games. Why was Jill still a fucking Wesker fan girl when she shot him. Why didn’t any of the other areas beside the main hall of spencer mansion and the front hall of rpd make it in? Their is just SO much wrong Re apocalypse I loved because although their was a lot of stuff that was identical to the OG RE3, I knew it was a reimagining of that story so it wasn’t going to be shot for shot. Also WHY IN THE HELL is Claire the master of unlocking when Jill is suppose to be? Like they made the dumbest changes and swapped shit and welcome to raccoon city was just a fucking mess 😭
Before you say “this is a reimagining to.” No the whole promotion of this movie is “identical to the games” when literally their is almost nothing identical besides like pointless shit. 🙁. Bad promotion. Also Hannah did literally no press or interviews for this film at all..... Sienna Guillory at least did tons of interviews and fan interactions AND she literally stated she paid for and played re3 to get into the character of jill and we could tell. Idk I could rant forever but why did Jill get fucked over so bad in this movie it’s irritating because Jill was done to literal perfection in apocalypse i even have the 27x40 Jill poster for RE apocalypse that Sony released. Like whyyy
Okay, I haven’t seen the film yet but judging by the trailers released they are probably very telling on how this film will go. I think everyone agrees that it was a huge mistake to base the film on two games which were set months apart from each other with strong characters in both games, trying to mash both stories together just did a disservice to both stories. I think the reason why the director did both games in one film was because he’s a fan of both games and was afraid he wouldn’t get to tell the events of resident evil 2 in a sequel.
@@WindyCityNick with the exception of the first resident evil Paul movie. Was a good movie. Bad resident evil movie. Welcome to raccoon city is a good resident evil movie. Just a bad movie.
Dude honestly, your review was the most fair that I've seen so far. I love that you acknowledge that this movie is not perfect and has its issues, but you give praise where praise is due. Was getting frustrated seeing all sorts of people focus on the negatives. I agree the CGI was a let down, that Leon's character was not what it should have been but I don't think that's on the actor, that it felt very condensed in to one movie with the format they chose. If they wanted to focus on the different storylines like they did, it should have either been done as a tv series or separate movies. But I love the dark horror tone with small tidbits of campy humor, I loved the soundtrack because it felt "heavy" I guess for lack of a better term, almost like the claustrophobic feeling was amplified by it, but also by the lack of music at times like Chris' shootout in the dark and the zombie dog in the garage. All in all I think this was a strong video game to movie adaptation and definitely one of the best ones to date. My one curiosity is whether they decided to put the first two games in to one movie so they could get both games adapted in case they couldnt get a sequel?
I grew up watching my brother and his friend play Resident Evil 2 on the good ol' Playstation 1. I remembered being creeped out, but I've never actually played the game myself, just watched them as they went deeper and deeper into the underground lab, where naked zombies and plant monsters roamed. That's what I remembered the most. Then, I saw previews for Resident Evil 4 for GameCube, and I wished I had one because there was something about RE4 that appealed to me. But, when the PS2 version came out, my mom got it for me as a Christmas present. I think I was around 12 or 13 at the time. RE4 was really the first time I've played a Resident Evil game, and boy, did I love it! It was a difficult game for me (because I usually could beat games within two days, whereas it took me to beat RE4 about a whole week). I'd never forgotten the moment when I got my head chopped off by a chainsaw. RE4 was one of those games that really made my childhood, and till this very day, it's still my favorite Resident Evil title. The remake of RE2 is a close second, but there's just something about RE4 that remains a classic as it is. Playing it as an adult years later, I can see it being so campy at times, but I still love it. I did pick up whatever Resident Evil games I could since then. I haven't seen Welcome to Raccoon City yet, I will on Friday, but I'm not expecting it to be an instant classic since they are throwing the first two games into one movie. I don't know why they even did that if they wanted to be a more faithful adaption of the video games. It'd be cool as hell to see Berkin and Mr. X as the main villains in the 2nd movie, or Nemesis in the third movie, but the way it sounds in your review, that's something we won't get to see. I can see them go in the direction of Code Veronica in the 2nd movie, but even then, that's still a gap to fill.
Ain't getting pass this mess of a movie. What, they gonna combine code Veronica and zero cause we didn't see Rebecca. I'm gonna give it a hard pass if someone is dumb enough to greenlight another flop like this.
The movie was terrible. Zombies looked rubbish, characters didn't live or acted like the game characters, the script was terrible and you said that everyone play there parts perfectly? I mean Leon was a joke, Jill was bland, Claire didn't act like Claire, Chris was hardly in it and wesker... Jeez
On your first positive point, I'd argue the first Silent Hill movie did a way better job than this movie did on representing the game that inspired it, albeit with some changes. Silent Hill Revelations can blow a goat, though.
Longtime Resident Evil fan here. Considering my expectations were so low they were melting next to the earth’s core, I can’t say I hated this movie. If you expect just a wild romp with zombies and monsters, you may have fun. Anything else, especially a faithful RE adaptation, not so much. I didn’t think it was particularly great, but I certainly wasn’t bored, some cringy moments aside.
Yeah I was actually expecting it to be closer to the games despite adding 1&2 together. This movie had so much potential, someone definitely loved the games within the film crew because the sets were so on point but damn the characters were really off and idk why they tried putting in that orphanage storyline Claire just coming to see Chris would have been fine then all hell breaks loose.
I saw the movie and asked for money refund at the cinema😂 1.I didn't feel any tense scene in a whole movie,is that a real horror one? 2.Nothing happened for a reason, it was everything in a blender and throw it all over random 3.Most of the characters don't even look familiar to me,not to mention Leon (l still have goosebumps) 4.raccon city suppose to be infested by zombies..l think l saw no more then 10 walking dead in 1hour and 45min Resident Evil fans deserve much more then that
All of the characters were horribly written and cast, they especially did Leon SO dirty with him being the incompetent butt of all the jokes, and all in all, the story is just horrible with its definition of sticking close to the source material being taking random iconic scenes from the games and sewing them together in random order like a frankenstiens experiment.
I think they made Leon an idiot because they wanted to have a strong female lead to appease the crowds. I didn't like the casting or the writing at all for his character and was disappointed
I think what this video suggests is that you can have good taste, you can know what makes a good movie but also because you’re a fan you can overlook certain things to enjoy something rather than dogging on it.
Cody , your slowing becoming my favorite Your tube channel, but I will mention your theme music scares the shit out of me if i fall asleep and a new video starts...lol Keep up the amazing work!
"This movie is for the fans." Bullshit. All those easter eggs and set designs are nothing without a good story. They half-assed it. Casting was trash. CGI was trash. No Mr. X. Birkin has 2 forms. The movie is trash. How this movie got approved to be made is mind-boggling. Ghostbusters: Afterlife had a ton of easter eggs but had a great story. They did it right!
It’s funny, you and I share so many of the exact same opinions. Resident Evil is also my favorite video game series, I’ve beaten RE4 more than any other game as well, our thoughts are the same on the previous six movies (although Afterlife is arguably my favorite). And I even agree with most of what you say here except I can say that this IS my favorite of all seven options. The only other difference is that I didn’t hate Leon that much. He’s pretty naive and unskilled in the RE2 game, especially with Ada, so I immediately took that as being amped up a little here with the thought that he becomes the badass we all know in any sequels, just like the change in RE4. I figured they were attempting to give him the biggest character arc but I mean… I guess we’ll see. Love your content though, and rock on.
Johannes Roberts revealed this will be an origin story adaptation with faithful ties to the games, and will be set in 1998 on a fateful night in Raccoon City. Johannes Roberts told Screen Rant that the reboot would be "super, super scary" and more faithful to the games. The film is based on and inspired by the first two video games. Robbie Amell is a fan of the Resident Evil video games Director Johannes Roberts is a huge John Carpenter fan and for the film, he drew inspiration from two of Carpenter's films with Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) and The Fog (1980) as these disparate group of characters coming together under siege. Brenton Thwaites and Harris Dickinson were being eyed for Chris Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy. Johannes Roberts has stated in an interview, "We are in active development. I pitched them a take and they really loved it. It's gonna be great, it's gonna be scary, super scary, and it's just getting back to the roots of the game." The twelfth Resident Evil film count the animated CGI films Biohazard 4D: Executer (2000), Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008), Resident Evil: Damnation (2012), Resident Evil: Vendetta (2017) and Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (2021) and the seventh live action Resident Evil film in the series. Hannah John-Kamen will be the second English actress to play Jill Valentine after Sienna Guillory who played Jill in Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) and Resident Evil: Retribution (2012). This marks the second time that Neal McDonough is playing a villain in a cinematic reboot of a Capcom video game franchise, after playing M. Bison in Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009). This will be Avan Jogia's second zombie movie after Zombieland: Double Tap (2019). This will be Hannah John-Kamen's second movie based video game after Tomb Raider (2018). This will be Neal McDonough's fifth movie based video game after Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009), Company of Heroes (2013), Batman: Assault on Arkham (2014) and Sonic the Hedgehog (2020). Robbie Amell (Chris Redfield) & Avan Jogia (Leon S. Kennedy) both co-starred in Nickelodeon TV shows. Robbie Amell (Jimmy Madigan) in True Jackson, VP (2008) & Avan Jogia (Beck Oliver) in Victorious (2010) respectively. In an interview director Johannes Roberts stated that the movie is set over one night in 1998 and will feature a lot of the creatures from the original games. In an interview director Johannes Roberts states that the name of the movie is "Welcome to Raccoon City".
Honestly if they wanted to do the 1 and 2 story in the same movie then they should had genuinely made a 3 hour film and I think the movie would work imo I watch a 3 hour resident evil film 💯💯💯💯💯 I would also accept two 1:45 films
You thought the Jill character was accurate? Really? The turned her into a gun-ho psycho that's in love with Wesker. The character representation in this film sucks. I do agree that they got the sets good though
@@CodyLeachYT it was still there though. That and her "let me shoot this" attitude just isn't what she was I'm the games. Leon is almost a joke and useless. Chris was actually OK and I get what they were doing with Wesker. I honestly wanted this to be good, but was a total let down for me.
A very detailed produced review Cody, you really do sum up the good & bad points brilliantly & give a clear explanation & what you'd change or improve. I always enjoy watching your reviews. It out UK December but I'll wait for blu ray, did you stay for the mid credit scene?
Just saw it, as you know I'm a huge fan since I was a kid, I didn't hate this movie. I really liked the sequence with Chris in the dark fighting zombies, also the part with the licker was cool. I really liked Robbie Amell, he felt the most in character and gave a decent performance. I also thought Neal Mcdoungh was good as Birkin. I didn't hate Leon, but it's absolutely not Leon. I thought the guy acted fine, there was one moment at the end that felt pretty Leon. Wesker though, what the hell were they thinking? Some of the Easter eggs really made me smile, but I really agree they shouldn't have combined the two stories. A couple of good jumpscares too. As for your question, I think if they do another they'll do Code Veronica, since they teased it. So I enjoyed myself, but still not a good adaptation.
I’m pretty sure they had one too many chefs in the kitchen. Like, I was super excited for Hunk! He is there for a split second. A second. Being deployed into raccoon city and is never seen again. He was the one who was supposed to shoot Williams and I was like “oh so they are never bringing him back. Well why was he deployed then? Because Wesker just shot his ass.” And they did my boi Leon so so dirty. Also Irons was supposed to be a total pos like, kidnaps and kills the mayors daughter evil. Whoever wrote Leon must of really hated his character. That was one of my main growls of the movie it did feel like a middle finger. And you’re right. He wasn’t Wesker until he put the shades on at the end. I was really like “this is not Wesker Wesker was always in his own way. He was always Wesker.”
You nailed it PERFECTLY bro, I just left the movie theater with my wife and we are listening to this video on the drive home and the moment I start speaking about something specific you end up saying the exact same thing so me and you are 100% seeing what's awesome and so wrong about this movie, I don't know what the hell they're going to do in the next one cuz they've completely boxed themselves in if they want to stay true to the games cuz there's nowhere else left to go, you can't make Leon a special agent that tries to find the president's daughter because he's a freaking doofus in this movie, you can't have Ada Wong working for Albert Wesker because apparently she saves and creates Wesker at the end, I mean you literally can't do resident Evil 6 7 or 8 either so I don't know where the hell they are planning to go but either way thanks for the video bro can't wait for saturday!
While I do have issues with combining the first two games , I definitely liked it . It has issues , like characters being underdeveloped , but I think ultimately all of them come back to combining the two games , there just isn't enough time to do that.... And my other issue is with myself for not being at a movie in so long that I didn't think to go to the toilet before that and I was near pissing myself for half the movie... That was the true survival horror.
17:50 Johannes Roberts answered that question saying that he’s doing Code: Veronica X if this movie succeed. Alfred and Alexia Ashford is in this Movie fyi
This is the #1 review of this film that fans of the franchise should listen to! It's great to hear a fan actually realize what this film was trying to accomplish (and in alot of ways did) instead of choosing to only focus on the character casting or the mashing of two games into one movie.
@@MartyMcFly88i disagree. The Anderson movies are guilty pleasures of mine even though they stray so far from the games. The Netflix series was ehh. I don’t like that they made Wesker a black man simply because Wesker isn’t a black man. He’s always been blonde haired and cat eyed lol. Anyways, I was totally looking forward to this movie but IMO they ruined it by cramming 2 games into one. These events didn’t happen on the same night. They could’ve made one movie in the mansion and then another in the Police Station. I just don’t get what they were thinking.
I hated the Milla movies, and I prefer them over this sheit. I mean what's worse? A movie series that strays away from the source material and does it horribly? Or a movie that tries to stay close to the source material, and does it horribly? Yes, the latter.
It wasn’t bad, they twisted up a lot and threw in some stuff to the story but overall it wasn’t terrible, def doesn’t deserve the bad rep ppl are giving it. It stayed true to bits of the game and didn’t make it a messy matrix Alice wannabe flick which I appreciate
I loved it. Absolutely vibed with it and most of the changes they made. That said, the lack of story and Leon’s character were really working against it. There just wasn’t enough explained for people who have 0 experience with the games. I want to say Leon “became” Leon at the end but…meh…I won’t even attempt to flesh out that argument 😂 Just not enough there to back it up and not enough plot development to make it rise above anything other than a love letter to fans. But I did love it.
@Dark Gi I disagree. I love the first two Anderson RE’s and don’t dislike the others except the last one. If they did introduce Alice in this film I’d be down to see how they do it. Whether they start over or bring her in and fit this into the other six films. If it was done well that could be interesting. If done poorly it might suck 😂 Either way I can’t predict what I’d say because it’s not what we got.
@Dark Gi I actually don’t disagree with you entirely. I don’t like films that attempt to do a 1:1 interpretation. I’d rather play the games. I liked this one for some of the changes and how it felt like a film inspired by the games rather than a film trying to be the games. Fan service and all that is there but I also liked how it felt like a new RE experience within a familiar atmosphere. It’s a reason I like the Anderson films, too. None of these are what I would consider to be great films haha. Just as a fan and someone who likes to see what other people do with the RE universe…I really enjoy them. I just wish this one had taken the time to let the screenplay sit in the oven more and finish out the story.
They didn't do enough for regular people and fans to make this a good movie for either audiences. Too much unexplained bs and not enough characterization of characters that video gamers would know. I have had long box version of re1 since it came out and still collect re merch and my gf who knows jack shit about the franchise went to see it and when we left, we both wondered why we even watched that jarring bullshit. It was a cash in and won't get another sequel to even bother to explain this mess or whatever situation they try to put together to follow it. Glad I only paid 8 bucks for the both of us lol.
I've been saying since I saw Leon in the trailer that they should have just made that character Carlos. He looks the part and the character you described that he played in the film would have been in line with the Carlos from the OG RE3 game.
I'm Carlos Oliveira. Leon in the Original game has brown eyes, brown hair and some soft copper skin tone. Leon is an Italian immigrant at some point according to its creators Isao Ohishi.
Just wanna say thank you so much for not being one of those people who bitches about the casting of Jill and Leon and actually defending the choice. Great video!
"Where do they go from here" probably code veronica, it also has Claire as the main character with Chris being playable later in the story...and the fans would go crazy for it. That or a movie with Jill fighting nemesis but that doesn't sound possible from what you said about raccoon city being destroyed
Long time watcher of your channel. Love what you do and find myself agreeing with you on most of your movie reviews. Sometimes a movie ranking might differ, but I always feel like we are pretty close in opinions on things. This movie, however, looks to be one where we don't. I do agree with you that the settings are so good. They're like characters in themselves. I also like that the settings go along with the games and the time lines somewhat match up (or at least closer than what we've had). What took me out of the movie asap was the diner scene at the start. I was like, wait? That's Wesker? That's Leon? Jill? I refused to watch mostly everything after seeing the initial trailer. So I was like, okay. They appear much different, so I hope they do their characters well. I don't mind changing up looks, but when you change looks AND character traits, then just make a new character. Just slapping a name on someone to say they're in something feels cheap. Anyhow, I let the movie play out. I didn't hate their performances, but I just didn't feel like I was watching the characters in one of my favorite series growing up. I felt like I was watching another group live through similar events. Sure, they had their names, but they in no way felt like them. I'm sure I'll watch a sequel regardless though. I'm one of those fans who watches everything related to properties I am into. That reminds me, as far as game adaptations go, I'll take Warcraft as my pick for most accurate portrayal.
Imagine if we got a Mike Flanigan series type treatment to RE? There is soo much to build. Start from the first mansion mission and lead up to the badass RE4 season...My God!!
I am a fanatic of the original 1 & 2 1996 and 98 versions of Resident Evil, played them both with much joy and excitement on PS 1 back when they came out, I’m 62 years young btw & still love the franchise. I’m in 100% agreement with your assessments pros & cons, in particular the way Leon Kennedy’s character was ridiculed. Good job evaluating this film (of which I hope to see an extended cut) thumb up! 👍
11:10 Yeah, it reallyfelt like someone invited me to a party just to get hit in the teeth. They should really switch the party's DJ for the right tracks were available, they just had to know how to play them.
I hated this movie to the core. I am a die hard fan and casting acting directing writing were all wrong. At least first 6 movies were doing something different and had casting better than this one hands down
I just watched it and I thought it was trash, as soon as I saw the introduction of Leon I lost all hope. I remained optimistic and thought it looked like we would have a decent adaptation and I was very disappointed. I may be very biased though since Leon is my favorite character. I just thought it was very disrespectful for his character. I get what they were going for by making him a fuck up and at the very end he becomes a bad ass but it was too much for me. I also hated what they did with Birkin leading up to the climax. Great review like always btw. I’m glad you got more enjoyment out it than I did. When it comes out on Blu-ray I’ll give it another watch once my initial disappointment has time to settle and I know what to expect from it. I wouldn’t have minded Leon’s character if he wasn’t named Leon.
As much as I did NOT enjoy this film when it initially came out, I'd like to go back and check it out again for a second time. It fell completely flat for me, but your review gave me a little better perspective to look at it, keeping in mind the fair points you brought up. I hope I can give it a little more respect for what they were going for. I always want films to do well, but man my first viewing was not so great 😂 Keep up the great content and thanks for your input! 😀
Resident Evil welcome to raccoon city is like the toy you asked your parents for on Christmas. Then they buy you a knockoff with flashy packaging that's poorly made & has pieces missing instead. Your mom's like, "look sweetie! It says Jill's sandwich! That's what you like right?" & you're just gritting your teeth as you smile at her. "Thanks for trying mom..it's better than last year" lol
Absolutely perfect breakdown of this film. Literally the first time Wesker was shown on scene I was like that is not going to be Wesker... and it was. He just was not the person we needed to give us the Wesker vibe. Great actor but just not Wesker from RE. Leon, I literally grown every time his face appeared because apparently they decided he was going to be the comedic relief and that was not what he was in the game. Overall I would have to say I liked more about the movie than I disliked about it. The fight scene in The Mansion and the fight scene underneath the Police Station gave us gameplay which the Anderson movies did not.
Cody definitely reminds me of Danny Mcbride in East Bound and Down.. Funny as hell! I enjoy the reviews and his interpretations of these movies. Extremely Perceptive 👏😮
I am proud to say that I watched and liked each video in this series! I think they can go to CODE: Veronica and include Nemesis in that setting. It's isolated and makes sense to test a prototype in a 'controlled' environment. Since Claire, Chris, Jill, and Leon were together (for the first time in history), it could work, could - to have Claire contact Leon, who contacts the other two to save her on Rockfort and the Ashford's go to kill all of the people that have dirt on Umbrella. Then of course, since Edward Ashford was one of the founding members, they could dig up some information about the Tricell facility in Africa since they all had the expedition there and mix in RE4 and RE5. That would be kind of cool to see... Maybe? Thoughts? I only say this since Wesker was the central villain in CV, 4, and 5. It makes sense to go that route.
Although your trying to pick apart the pieces left in the barrel by the director and producers of this movie, I kinda like your idea but this movie was terrible. It has to make money to warrant a sequel and I don't see this movie making money from casuals. All the diehards already saw it and are shaking their heads why. Spiderman 3 all over again, just split the damn thing up into 2 parts cause this merging of 2 events just didn't hold up.
When they said it would be closer to the games I guess I misunderstood and thought we'd get a faithful adaptation. Yeah combining both RE 1 and RE2 was a bad move. I was hoping it would be a split storyline. Like one half is for RE 1 and the other half is RE 2 but why they don't just do one storyline is beyond me.
Cus movie directors ALWAYS want to do their own thing and piss on the source material. Have lost all hope of ever seeing an accurate RE on film now. It's closer to Anderson films n gets some right but falls short in too many ways. Directors are a PITA.
Just left the theater with my son, I loved the movie. Far better than any of the Paul(West Side) Anderson version. They did good paying homage to the source material.
I felt like it did a good job of appealing to both fans and gen pop as my fiance liked how creepy the setting was (she said it reminded her of silent hill a game she was familiar with) while i didnt like some of the casting and writing choices but still liked how it played out. It was intense at least for me bcuz i knew what lurked in the dark. I agree though they shouldve split the movies so they can have a proper sequel. They shouldve done re2 first so they can allude to the first game with chris being gone, but then do like a “prequel” with re1 and return to raccon city for jill’s adventure in re3 with a proper “sequel”. Or maybe combine re1 and 3 and follow jills perspective the whole time. The endless possibilities
Still going to see this movie in theaters because I love these damn games, hope it continues, somehow, but I had to hear your opinions, as they are always interesting, but good review Cody
***** SPOILER ***** * * * but I popped hard when the Ashford twins were mentioned... as a huge fan of code veronica it was cool to see that... possible villains in future movies
What i hated was the creatures screen time. Licker in shown for less than a minute and killed off immediately. Birkin was shown for 3 minutes. Dogs 1 minute. Lisa 2 minutes. Only thing faithful to the game were the setpieces...
I loved it. I mean, it's honestly one of the "worst" films I've ever seen but I also think it's brilliant to a degree. It's so insanely campy, it's like a full length version of the 1996 live action intro from the first RE. If that's what the director was aiming for, he's an effing mad genius. If it was sheer dumb luck, I'm happy for him. I totally get why some people dislike it but I loved it. It was one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen and I honestly just couldn't believe what I was actually seeing. it was surreal almost because of how campy it was, lol.
It's nice to just see a review that's not overly negative. I don't even recognize the Paul Anderson movies existence, so it's nice to see a movie appreciate the source material with its own spin
"It's all for the fans less for the general audience." Nah, bollocks. It's closer to source material than Anderson's but isn't "all for the fans" due to too many changes as usual. If you make a good ACCURATE movie the fans love then the a general audience type folks would also like it as they wouldn't know the difference......so it's a false dichotomy. Just stick to source material n both demographics can be happy. Never happens, never will. Lost all hope we'll ever see RE1 n 2 on film accurately now. It's closer but too many changes still. Mashing RE1 n 2 together fucks it up. Chris should be in europe at RE2 and having RE1 Jill in RE2 screws up RE3 and in RE2, Chris being in europe sets up Code Veronica. This movie screws ALL of that up. Not to mension Wesker, Costumes n dodgy casting. "Wanted to cast actors that DIDN'T look like the characters but rather who could play the part." What BOLLOCKS! How about casting actors that can play the role.....AND.....LOOK like the characters? How hard can it be. FFS. As for race changes, hair n costumes to me it is a MAJOR issue. Yeah I know, many are not botheted or say it s trivial yet my view says if the characters look different......then they are different. Whinges aside the film looks closer than Anderson's so a step closer.
this is probably the only positive review I have seen of this movie. I definitely agree with your points and they are quite fair overall. for me, I can overlook the character changes to. in fact I thought the movie was great half way in then it turned into more of rush job there after. loved many parts of the movie and the various unique scenes. overall if I see it as a horror film without RE context it works. if I look at this as a RE movie with proper backstory it falls apart. chief irons could have been the whole movie and I would have loved it. if the movie solely focused on raccoon town err "city" then I would have loved it. sadly the film jumped around too much. if they would have made this a movie mini series I think it would have been much better received as the characters could develop.
I’m still pissed! This could have been epic but they F’D IT UP AGAIN!!!!! They had ALL THE PIECES and made the stupid decision to cram the 1st and 2nd game storylines into an hour and a half movie. WHY??!!!??
Best review I’ve seen! Great content too! I love that a real fan is reviewing it. All the other videos I watched weren’t fans and you can tell! Definitely hitting that subscribe button!
Unfortunately I don't think there will be a sequel given the box office numbers but as far as sequels go, it seems fairly obvious to me that the sequel will be Code: Veronica. Everything is set up for it (have the heroes get captured raiding Umbrella HQ and sent to Rockfort Island) and I think I remember reading an interview with the director where he confirmed that Code: Veronica would be the next logical step
Sarah: 19:00 on . Right there that is when Cody realized that he was in a franchise paradox. “How can you create more when you’ve shown your cards?!” Was it about making an adaptation or was the creator so eager that the product wasn’t backed up to make the script cohesive? That will remain his twilight zone. Damn it Todd queue strings! Fine I’ll do it Doo doo doo dooo Doo doo doo doo Doo doo doo doo
Ya absolutely spot on Cody as usual my man. Shame about them combining the two stories, crazy. And Leon for me, is the number one character in resident evil history.
I am totally blind, and I have seen videos of people playing the games. Freaking fascinating! This movie felt like,, as you said a love letter to the fans, but I would agree with you about these serious holes lol! Also, they need to put it in descriptive.
I have two strikes going against me for this movie. First as I've stated before I'm not a gamer more a cinefile. Second I don't love zombie films some yes but for the most part not really. So I would fall into the casual movie going set here. BUT, I'm extremely happy for the fans of this franchise with the positives you listed!! It's great to hear that someone put some effort into a video game movie adaptation which gives service to those who will appreciate the most. Your review Cody was entertaining seeing your fanaticism for the Resident Evil games and the objective positive and negative points. Fanatics don't always show objectivity in their viewpoints, seems we all run across these individuals (Halloween ;)) but no movie, franchise or series is perfect. Again with my personal strikes I will most likely skip this for now and maybe watch it when I come across it on a streaming service.

that intro track was Fire and cool shirt.
The level of disrespect for my girl Jill from the past decade has been annoying.
A rookie cop doesn't equal an incompetent moron. A rookie cop means someone without any experience on the job but still is very well trained.
Remember, Leon never made it to work that day. He was late and by the time he showed up, everyone was already dead.
Well, at least they tried. They should’ve split this into two parts. Why do studios feel the need so shove so much into one film? This would’ve made a better tv show.
I hear this about almost every movie now. Maybe an hour and a half or two hours just isn't enough anymore.
Agree but there is a tv show being developed on Netflix By Supernatural Writer Andrew Dann
High budget mini serie would have been great.
Good actors and cinematography.
Not a waste of time but yeah..
@@DevilFan669 Yep.
Thought it would’ve been much better had they split this one into two films.
there is no enough space for res1 story..... it's too short ....
@@Beyn1 dude you can make a 90 minute RE1 movie easy.
They wasted a great actor with birkin. He def would've been amazing if it literally just followed the game.
I just realize the actors who play Chris and Leon came from Nickelodeon.
That's what threw me off about the casting. I'm not one of those people who bitched and moaned about the race change but Beck from Victorious is Leon!!!!? Why!!!!????
@Dark Gi Ehhh he's ok. I'm not impressed at all by his acting.
What did they play on Nickelodeon
Chris wasn't on nickelodeon
They should’ve put josh peck in there
Did you even watch the movie? this was a slap in the face to all of the RE fans
If a Resident Evil fan wasn't told, they wouldn't be able to guess from a photo that this was supposed to be Jill Valentine.
(When compared to the games) This film did some cool things, but ultimately failed FOR ME.
and got a better looking Jill
@@animal1nstinct394 Hannah John Kamen is hot as fuck. Plus she clearly gain muscles for this film. Hmmmmm
The casting was not the issue. The issue what that so much effort wss put into easter eggs and things related to the game that the pace of the movie is off making it impossible for the character to look convincing
@@truthiz2805 You're allowed to have whatever opinion you want. I'm just stating mine. Have a good one. : )
Their is just SO much wrong
Re apocalypse I loved because although their was a lot of stuff that was identical to the OG RE3, I knew it was a reimagining of that story so it wasn’t going to be shot for shot.
Exactly got a two for 1 because of fear that a sequel wouldn’t come
This movie sucks. They try to rush such a big story into an hour and a half with no character development and bad cgi.
@@WindyCityNick have you seen the Paul Anderson resident evils? Because those are way worse.
@@Bubba_1776 Yeah they’re all bad movies blinded by nostalgia
The director said in a interview that he wants to make a Code Veronica adaptation with the next one if this is succsesfull
I’m not surprised, thanks to the Ashford twins being in the film.
I saw the movie and asked for money refund at the cinema😂
1.I didn't feel any tense scene in a whole movie,is that a real horror one?
2.Nothing happened for a reason, it was everything in a blender and throw it all over random
3.Most of the characters don't even look familiar to me,not to mention Leon (l still have goosebumps)
4.raccon city suppose to be infested by zombies..l think l saw no more then 10 walking dead in 1hour and 45min
Resident Evil fans deserve much more then that
All of the characters were horribly written and cast, they especially did Leon SO dirty with him being the incompetent butt of all the jokes, and all in all, the story is just horrible with its definition of sticking close to the source material being taking random iconic scenes from the games and sewing them together in random order like a frankenstiens experiment.
I think they made Leon an idiot because they wanted to have a strong female lead to appease the crowds. I didn't like the casting or the writing at all for his character and was disappointed
I hope that if there's an option, there's a cut of this movie that splits the Spencer Mansion and Raccoon City scenes into different halves.
🐖+🦅
I think what this video suggests is that you can have good taste, you can know what makes a good movie but also because you’re a fan you can overlook certain things to enjoy something rather than dogging on it.
Cody , your slowing becoming my favorite Your tube channel, but I will mention your theme music scares the shit out of me if i fall asleep and a new video starts...lol Keep up the amazing work!
Definitely sounds like this should have been two movies!
They can make the 2nd one based on RE 0. And do it like 300 1 & 2 how they are side by side.
Robbie Amell is a fan of the Resident Evil video games
Director Johannes Roberts is a huge John Carpenter fan and for the film, he drew inspiration from two of Carpenter's films with Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) and The Fog (1980) as these disparate group of characters coming together under siege.
Brenton Thwaites and Harris Dickinson were being eyed for Chris Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy.
Johannes Roberts has stated in an interview, "We are in active development. I pitched them a take and they really loved it. It's gonna be great, it's gonna be scary, super scary, and it's just getting back to the roots of the game."
The twelfth Resident Evil film count the animated CGI films Biohazard 4D: Executer (2000), Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008), Resident Evil: Damnation (2012), Resident Evil: Vendetta (2017) and Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (2021) and the seventh live action Resident Evil film in the series.
Nothing like a watching a brand new Cody Leach review with a cold beer! 😎🍺
You thought the Jill character was accurate? Really? The turned her into a gun-ho psycho that's in love with Wesker. The character representation in this film sucks. I do agree that they got the sets good though
They barely even focused on her "love" for Wesker and she took him down pretty damn quick. So yes, that to me was pretty on character.
@@CodyLeachYT it was still there though. That and her "let me shoot this" attitude just isn't what she was I'm the games. Leon is almost a joke and useless. Chris was actually OK and I get what they were doing with Wesker. I honestly wanted this to be good, but was a total let down for me.
I haven't seen this one but want to because I like "the train" song from it.
Because Wesker just shot his ass.”
And they did my boi Leon so so dirty.
If they really wanted to combine two games into a film it should’ve been RE 0 and 1. Just would’ve made more sense

Johannes Roberts answered that question saying that he’s doing Code: Veronica X if this movie succeed.
The character casting is essential in these. It’s like making a biopic of Obama and hiring Trudeau to play him.
@@Sperminski that spunds like the type of trainwreck that would be awesome to watch.
@@Sperminski it’s still better than the Paul Anderson or the Netflix shit
Best thing about the Alice movies? They have almost nothing to do with Resident Evil.
Exactly!!!!!!
Going to see it tonight hope it’s good. Don’t expect it to be great but I do hope it works.
Same man good luck hope we like it 😂
Update? lol. I enjoyed it. Things I hated. But I enjoyed movie overall. Might re watch
This movie desperately needs an extended cut.
The First Act and most of the Second Act were phenomenal but it did feel like things were trimmed out
It was bloated. Still, better than anything that came before it.
Hey look no dislikes. On that basis, this must be one of the greatest movie reviews ever created. Great job 👍
youtube changed it so you can't see the dislikes only the likes
everything woke turns to shit.
Yes cody and angry Joe both uploaded reviews for this film around the same time got some great content to watch now.
I'd love that
I am a fanatic of the original 1 & 2 1996 and 98 versions of Resident Evil, played them both with much joy and excitement on PS 1 back when they came out, I’m 62 years young btw & still love the franchise.
Claire and especially Leon where terrible and not like their characters try again, this movie is a MASSIVE fail.
I hated this movie to the core. I am a die hard fan and casting acting directing writing were all wrong. At least first 6 movies were doing something different and had casting better than this one hands down
Its scary how much we think alike on this one. It's made for the fans, plain and simple. Thumbs up 👍
I just watched it and I thought it was trash, as soon as I saw the introduction of Leon I lost all hope.
Also I thought the actors were good with what they were given I didn’t think the actor did a bad job as Leon, I disliked the way he was wrote
Abso-fuckin-lutley. Exactly. This movie left me what the thought of " why did I want to see this again?" When me and my gf walked out.
This movie felt long, disjointed, and doesn't make me want to see a sequel. Honestly just play resident evil 2 again
Also code veronica would be next the director mentioned that and plus that post credit with wesker coming back to life...
"Oh, movie..." That is the best expression of disappointment I've ever heard!
When they first showed Leon sleeping before they mentioned his name I thought he looked more like Carlos, Leon and Jill's casting was horrendous
Still going to see this movie in theaters because I love these damn games, hope it continues, somehow, but I had to hear your opinions, as they are always interesting, but good review Cody

but I popped hard when the Ashford twins were mentioned... as a huge fan of code veronica it was cool to see that... possible villains in future movies
Did you see the post credit scene?
@@Programm4r I sure did... never leave a movie until the end
That's The Spirit!
lol
Which leon was better between the 2 live action interpretations in youropinion? 👀( haven't seen but gonna watch for sure.)
It's nice to just see a review that's not overly negative. I don't even recognize the Paul Anderson movies existence, so it's nice to see a movie appreciate the source material with its own spin
"It's all for the fans less for the general audience."
Nah, bollocks.
"Wanted to cast actors that DIDN'T look like the characters but rather who could play the part."
What BOLLOCKS!
It's rarely if ever scary.
I’m still pissed! This could have been epic but they F’D IT UP AGAIN!!!!! They had ALL THE PIECES and made the stupid decision to cram the 1st and 2nd game storylines into an hour and a half movie. WHY??!!!??
Do you have reviews of the games on your channel?
As a die hard resident evil fan I'm glad they made this for us the fans can't wait to check this movie out 👍
As soon as I saw Lisa Trevor in the trailer do the shhhhh thing, I knew she wasn't gonna be portrayed properly
Bro I have to ask…what is your into music? It gets me so pumped I need that on my gym playlist!
No Mr.X and no Nemesis in these movies, worst mistake ever
Best review I’ve seen! Great content too! I love that a real fan is reviewing it. All the other videos I watched weren’t fans and you can tell! Definitely hitting that subscribe button!
Thank you
Your like one of the only TH-camrs that actually points out the positives instead of just trashing the movie.
Its not Steven Amell his name is?
It's definitely a bummer that they didn't have the confidence to adapt both games I into two movies.
“How can you create more when you’ve shown your cards?!”
Was it about making an adaptation or was the creator so eager that the product wasn’t backed up to make the script cohesive?
That will remain his twilight zone. Damn it Todd queue strings!
Fine I’ll do it
Doo doo doo dooo
Doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo
I love the original games 1 to code veronica but got really uninterested when 4 came out. Just didn't work for me
Interesting. I've now watched nearly a dozen youtube reviews, ones that include fans of the games, yet no one liked the new film, until your review.
I'm going to see it Saturday I will come back to this review when I'm done seeing it.
Glad to hear this movie respected it’s source material.
Your review Cody is , as always good.
Didn't respect it. Closer than Anderson movies but wasn't respected. WAAAAY too many changes that were unwarrented.
Yeah the only accurate things are the locations they put far too many changes into the storylines
