the beautiful part about this ending is the fact that Sebastian won in the end, his picture is smirking at Kathryn, basically as a sign that even though he's dead he still wins. The part of the journal is so deep because he names all of the horrible qualities that Kathryn has and still claims that she's his "love." he loves Anette obviously but a part of him always cared about Kathryn no matter how manipulative and crazy she was.
He was no better than she was, though....but somehow he was the more sympathetic character of the two. Same in the movie Dangerous Liasons.
@@chainsawkitten3766 Even at the beginning of the movie Sebastian was paying for his own therapy classes also throughout the movie he is shown to have mercy. Kathryn is pure evil and never second guesses destroying anyone that crosses her path.
Zeafer Jones ah yes, but we don’t know why he was in therapy. It may not have been his choice. And it was also obvious he didn’t take it seriously, he was manipulative with his therapist.

There has never been a single person in human existence quite like Kathryn. Stunning to look at, and exciting to be near - cold as ice. She cares about absolutely no one but herself. This girl has elevated self-absorption into an art form. She believes in nothing and laughs in the face of sadness, faith, and sincerity. A person solely observing her and having seen the damage she’s done to so many lives would most likely classify her as evil. She scoffs at any and every type of religion, all the while manipulating others by using the idea of being religious all to her advantage. She’ll steal monetarily or emotionally from anyone who crosses her path, spend night after night in drunken, drug-induced debauchery, but lives this other life as the consummate perfect angel. She is in a sense brilliant, as evidenced by the fact that she has indeed completely fooled each person she has ever had to-except me-and she knows it. We are very similar people except I have a heart, and from time to time, actually feel emotion Kathryn does not. I have seen her break the spirits of others, cheat on anyone supposedly important to her, and all these things are done without so much as a second thought.

This is one the rare movies where I don't see "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" in Sarah Michelle Gellar lol great ending!

This is one of the greatest endings in movie history.
The song "Bittersweet Symphony" was a perfect to end with it, Where we see the look on Kathyrin face. When we Sebastian pic with a lil' smirt on his face as he's having the last laugh. Then she sees everyone in her school is shocked, stunned, and ashamed of what she had done.
Where she sees everyone is reading his journal & knowing the truth about her, the bet, & how she plays with ppl lives and everything else that's written on his journal.
Then see Anette driving away in Sebastian's car with a grin on her face, so she knows they're both even.
If only this similar ending in other cruel intentions movies remade in the past.
Take in the second sequel, if someone expose the school of a "secret society club" in a middle of a day. As the club leader "Kathryn" making her way to lunch with her friends. Much as "Sebastian" & "Danielle" were about to have a lunch together then they notice everyone is reading an article in the school paper. On which that has got their full attention on which the pages has the club journals entry's were copied and handed out.
Then everyone in school reads them of the people in the club on which how they've planned, preyed on, harassed, toyed with and crushed on other students lives and faculty members forced them out of school. A few ppl they've dislike, undesirable or unfit to the status que in their school. There many more of some other reasons of why they did to their victims.
As the word spread on the members gets busted, exposed to the media & the school board has them expelled. Will be soon charged on multiple charges by police, Handful of their victims who have decided to break their silence to come forward, as the story makes the front page. Then we see the person who exposed them has readied the headline rides away in a limo with a grin on their faces and has sunglasses on. It could be a fellow female student or a male teacher...maybe both they're in on it.
Man, Sarah Michelle did such an amazing job.

Imagine if this happened today in the social media age....Kathryn's reputation would be ruined in the most spectacular way. It will be all over Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google...everywhere. Social Media is more vicious and nasty than old school media

Alex Gallo It's more that everyone else now knows the truth about her and her false persona. Kathrine is a perfect example of a narcissist, who have to project a perfect image to the world, even if it's all just a facade. She has lost her perfect facade that allowed her to manipulate people to get what she wants. She knows that now she will have to face the consequences of her actions and her reputation is in shreds. It is the perfect revenge for someone like her, to have to face the rest of her life with other people knowing the rotten person she is and ostracizing her. It's also fitting this be her punishment because she taunted Sebastian with his reputation to get him to break up with Annette.

I think this is one of the best adaptations of Dangerous Liaisons to have been made. I think what makes it one of the best is the changing of Annette's fate and character from the original story. In the original her character could be thought of as pathetic and weak by modern standards , a pawn who curls up and dies of grief and shame after being used and discarded. In this version it is very satisfying that the good girl who was supposed to just be a pawn in Sebastian and Kathryn's cruel game won against both of them in the end .

I like how Annette was the one to get the car. She and the car were the prizes of the bet and at the end she won everything.
A the very end, when Annette leaves the city, I thought that was kind of a metaphor you know??? It's like she left the ''sin'' and opulence behind.
The best ending ever. The song, Kathyrin face and Anette driving Sebastian's car with a grin on her face, all of those make one hell of a film. I'm so sad that they don't put this much effort in the endings anymore. (Have a look at Breakfast Club ending. Although it's not sad at all, I always get tears in my eyes whenever I watch it) 10/10 !

Chloe Alnajafie how come? it is pretty self-explanatory haha. The funniest thing about it ( and clever if I might add) is that Sebastian always has the last word, even though he is pretty much dead! So, because of his choice to keep a diary through all of his adventures and to write there everything he knows about the most important characters in his life, he achieves to bring Kathyrin down. I hope it helps x

Chloe Alnajafie Kathryn was a Grade A Beyotch. She hated the fact that Cecile "Stole" her Boyfriend but he didn't like her at all. So she pretended to be her Friend and got access to all of her Business. This resulted in revenge but I loved the ending. Payback is a Mutha isn't it?
The movie itself was not anything extraordinary. It was enjoyable, but would have been ultimately forgettable if it weren't for this ending scene. The final scene is pure art, one of the best movie endings ever. The music...the close-up of Sebastian's smirking face...everything about this scene gives me chills even after twenty some-odd years.
But without the built up this ending would mean nothing tbh

I’d probably agree. Annette got her revenge on Kathryn for not only what she did to Sebastian but to others that were brought into her twisted games.
Now that Kathryn is finished and Sebastian is gone, Annette probably realised that there is nothing for her within the prep (city) life and is leaving New York City to revert back to her roots and to find herself again.

This movie is literally perfect cannot fault it at all :) It's so unique and different to most other movies.
I loved Sarah Michelle Gellar in this; she was brill.
I don't know when i see this ending, I miss so much my high school moments. When in high school, we are feeling that we are top of the world and we just only care about how looks we are, how smart and cool we are. Growing older and it sometimes kill me slowly and I miss that moment. We have so much time to hang out with friends. Now it's hard to do..

Makes sense. When I graduated high school, I was feeling suicidal because I was actually too happy with my life and I was afraid it was going to be spoiled beyond repair if I stayed alive. Ultimately didn't feel like dying, so on I went and still go now.

I loved Cathryn. She was an really interesting character and Anette? She was boring. She was made to be the object of the bet,nothing more. Cathryn was cruel and mean, but at least she had a character. she had something to say.

I thought Annette showed a lot of character development at the end. The whole movie she was this holier than thou type person but at the end she stoops to Sebastian's level just to avenge Sebastian.

really perfect buildup with this song... from the cameras following her down the middle church isle to opening the doors to pretty much a new life for her.... she was busted and the truth was revealed. and then Reese drives away to bittersweet symphony with the bittersweet fact that justice was served but her first seemed love was gone... it's kinda chilling this scene i love it

The ending of this movie should show people that if you say or do bad things to intentionally hurt others feelings, that it will all eventually come back on you! Karmas a bitch and thats exactly what happened in this scene! She was publically humiliated for her behaviour towards other people! Actions will always have consequences!
I also think there is a message not in the film but my message is some people are cruel cold and lack sympathy compassion and love BUT maybe the reason they are cruel and like that are because people have treated them like that. Only Monsters can create Bigger Monsters
Gotta just love the way the camera pans in gradually to focus on Kathryn as she steps out the door right when the song begins to hit its stride. Just perfect. It really truly doesn't get any better than that as far as movie endings go in terms of a scene synchronizing with a song.

We all make mistakes. And as Kathryn found out the hard way, when we hurt others, it eventually does come back to haunt us in the long run as well.
As a matter of fact, I read this very awesome CI/BtVS crossover fanfic on Twisting the Hellmouth called “Her Intentions” where the movie and the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fall in the same time-frame; however, Annette is mentioned, but doesn’t appear. In the story, Buffy Summers is Kathryn’s cousin, and they look alike - except for the hair color and the attitudes.
When I read it, I thought it was really good, as well as very inspiring, and I highly recommend reading it as well.. :)

I never found this ending sad. To me the way its shot (was supposed to be a massive twist ending) with the sneering smile from Annette driving Sebastian's car; always made me think that Annette's plan from the start was to act all cute and innocent and cause irreparable damage to the Kathryn and Sebastian after hearing how bad they both were.

I like how Annette was willing to stoop to Sebastian's level to take down Kathryn it showed a lot of character development. Sebastian would have been proud of her.
We assume the end is a tragedy for Kathryn. But she's been freed from all the hypocrisy that shes been forced to adopt. She's free to openly be who she is. And she might even get to face up to the coke habit.

It was a combination of both shock that he thought of her that way and that it was now gonna be the way everyone thought of her from now on. She lived so long with the wall of her facade that she's now lost with the fact that she's been exposed.
