The Ineos Grenadier is proof that you (Land Rover) shouldn't attempt to "fix" something that was never broken to begin with. I wanted a classic Defender, but after seeing this, I'd like to be greedy and have both. GREAT review, Mat!
Really? The old defender is a shit car. Absolutely kills your back after a long journey, so loud you can’t hear yourself think inside it, mpg is impressively shit, reliability is abysmal had mine breakdown on the road three times in 40k miles, very little interior space considering the size, crap stereo, crap ac and heating. Etc etc.
@@simonwilson7581 Yes. Then again, sticking to a slightly updated version of the old design, with big updates and upgrades to the interior and tech, worked well for the Mercedes G-Wagon. Those things sell faster than they can build them too, despite the hefty price.
Nah, the new defender is a massive success. People like the idea of an old defender, but anyone who's spent time in one will tell you how utterly terrible they were. What they've done with the new one is perfect - it's hugely capable off road, but refined on it, which is where most spend their lives. And it's relatively affordable. They nailed it. Sure, they could've stuck a caricature body on the new car like Mercedes. Meh, would it have made it any better?
I would have thought that the 60/40 rear split seats would align with the door openings, i.e. the 40 split with the small opening and the 60 split with the wider one.
The fact the seats don’t fold flat is crazy. Rules the car out for me, the things massive, but there less usable “tip run” space than my old Mercedes ml, which has a fully flat floor.
Its got some weird design choices which I guess comes from the ground up design. Wedging that 3.0L beamer engine into a weirdly shaped engine bay, for one. Its just such an inefficient layout which causes the weird humped roof and leaves no space for the electronics/ battery. The suspension mounts for the leaf springs are left danging below the frame, thats just not how modern ladder frame/ leaf springs work. You've basically just compromised your ground clearance. And the list goes on.
These are dope! I’m so happy to see smaller companies like this coming in and building manual, old school, low tech, purpose built vehicles. I’d love to see a company come in and build a manual transmission, low tech sports car.
A car that people who want simple have been asking for. I'm happy Sir Jim Radcliffe went ahead with this, good simple car that won't be as big of a pig to drive on the road (Big fan of the old defender but it was dangerous in modern traffic). Also, the old technology is utilised exceptionally well on this and modern conveniences have been added which in my eyes makes this one of the best cars this year.
I can understand why LR would want to take them to court for copyright but as far as I know, copyright only lasts 25 years. I suspect LR are pissed off because they discontinued their own Defender and perhaps wished they had of made this. This Grenadier looks like it will become a real commercial truck and not something for the city.
I heard that part of that sue was a study, in which they were presenting a silhouette of the Grenadier and asking people what car is on the picture and most of them replied simply a jeep :)
The EU emissions killed off the old defender, land rover should have kept the shell and upgraded the engine. Instead they've given us a chunky range rover. Ineos will kill off the new defender.
@@mrpete1972 this won’t kill off the new defender, the new defender is better in nearly every way, and it’s starting price is even cheaper, you also have a lot more options when it comes to engines etc, You get more vehicle for your money along with the name of a icon.

The 450 nm of torque from the engine might seem low, but an 8 speed torque converter gearbox offers low enough gearing, so that what you want is a nice flat torque curve.

JLR missed a trick when it designed the new Defender; as Matt says, this is the car that the new Defender should have been (and the new Defender should have been the Discovery replacement). If you configure the new Defender to any decent spec its price overlaps Discos and some RR Sports - shades of the pricing hiatus that plagued BL. And it's not built in Wales because a) the Welsh government refused to improve logistics flow along the M4 in S Wales, and b) because Ineos is taking over a Mercedes plant in France, so no huge financial or carbon footprint cost that would otherwise have been incurred by a new build. All of this demonstrates why Jim Ratcliffe is so successful. I agree with Matt - the Grenadier will be a huge success.
@@adveyrastogi3486 Because it looks like a really badly modified version of the old defender, not a cool one like say Twisted. Why has it got all the 'bits' stuck to the doors?
@@IslaSprollie If it would be a genuine LR design it obviously would not look like a bad mod. This is still a tough well built car no matter how it looks :)
Hey look! Its what everybody wanted the New defender to be! That new rear door is the answer to our biggest problem with the old one, pulling cattle trailer the door makes such a small gap with the spare tyre on. But everything else is exactly what's needed!
With ten year old Defenders fetching £40k and new ones about double that, it’s market appeal is assured. Unlike Land Rover, who rely upon their image and brand from their past, success will depend more on the leasing cost, reliability and the service network than on the car itself.
I'm so excited for this car. Seems a bit counterintuitive to not have mechanical dials for speedo and rev counter, considering the car is built with simplicity and reliability in mind. Would also be interested to see if there is space to fit additional fuel and water tanks.
Any of you who know me, know I've been a lifelong Land Rover fan. I almost cried when I saw the new Defender - not one bit what I'd hoped for. When I first saw the Grenadier - I wasn't that enthused, though it was a lot better than the new Defender. However, it has grown on me! Even I'm surprised how much. I have a Range Rover Sport for long journies and until recently a 110 Doublecab for anything dirty. I really wanted something like the 110 for practicality but with the ride quality and creature comforts (simple things like cup holders!) of the Range Rover (which is still gorgious to drive). It looks a lot like a G-Wagon to me too. That of course was another option, but they are just too expensive to be practical. I'd rather have a top end Range Rover for the money. The Grenadier looks like it might fit both roles (and it even has cup holders! ;-) ). High probability I'll be driving one eventually.
They both will do exactly the same. Throw new Toyota 4Runner in the mix even. All will perform the same. The difference can cone only in offroad situations where you want to break one of these vehicles. But All the normal offroad trails, all of the 4x4 will do ok.
I have the new Defender P300 and having had a 1998 Defender 90 for 12 years, the new one wins hands down. I can certainly report that the air suspension really excels in the wild outback areas of Henley-on-Thames towards Nettlebed.
For a review that considers the prototype of this vehicle from the perspective of a serious off-roader, have a look at AllOffroad 4x4 Adventures TV. His review identifies several potential shortcomings, including ground clearance, protruding steering damper, ramp over angle and woeful fuel capacity (for touring). Hopefully there are solutions in the pipeline.
I am in Australia and planning to purchase one of these when they are released here in September. Provided they drive well on the road. So far I have seen many many reviews offroad and have no doubts about their capabilities but not a single review of how they drive on motorways, dirt/gravel roads and B roads.
For the production models, I hope that 'bong' isn't as persistent as it was in the prototype! And I assume they'll stop the steering wheel from creaking too!
I've been waiting for the Grenadier for several years now and in that time the price has doubled! As a farmer, Ineos must be dreaming if they think we will pay £53k starting price. Maybe a wealthy land owner would buy it, although they would probably get a Range Rover instead. Therefore I'm not sure who this is for. Maybe townies with large incomes who want to play at off roading at the weekend? Although why not just buy the more luxurious new Defender. I would buy this but it would have to be closer to the original price.
@@warrenhulme1193 And it would still leak like a sieve, rattle and creak, be unbearably noisy, pollute like a tractor and have switch gear, seals, wipers, gauges and so much more, based on 70s British Leyland parts bins. New locks all around, that I can still open with a screwdriver. Don't talk such tosh about restoration being better than the Grenadier. This thing is an absolute thing of beauty and you're delusional if you think any rebuilt Defender comes anywhere near. This is the Defender, Landrover should have built, fit for the 21st Century.
I have just configured mine with a bull bar and checker plates on the front wings. Solid blue, white roof, 18" steelies with BF Goodrich tyres. base seats and rubber floor covering. Can't wait for them to arrive down here n Sunny Queensland Australia
This is a rival for a G-wagon not an original defender, I can’t see many farmers splashing out £48000 for the base model grenadier. The original defender became obsolete for its target market: farmers! Farmers mostly moved to Japanese vehicles as they’re far cheaper and more reliable.
I've been watching your videos for a long long time now, Honest, fair, witty and smart analysis and reviews. But this one time I felt like you were biased ... Strongly ! In every way the new defender is better - capabilities and comfort. This is a dream project of some one who loves to stubbornly hang on to the age old methods. There is no way this is better that the new defender given they cost the same. Conveniently you said its half the price of a G Wagon straying away from the obvious comparison with the Defender. Mind you this is from a company that is notorious for its fracking and green washing activities !
I had a ride in an early prototype here in Queensland in mid Jan, I was impressed, and seeing a more close to production vehicle, the order will be going in. As an overlander accross Australia, I think this will be brilliant,

Modern vehicles like Defender L663 look great. It really looks like something a very good designer made... .. but i can't quite figure out why... i don't like those. While the INEOS GRENADIER is also a modern vehicle and it looks FANTASTIC. On the dashboard, the buttons look like a military machine. There are bolts on the side of the little panels on which the buttons are held and there are two handles on the sides of the hazard switch. SO COOL!
I pray that the colour combos that we've seen on these preproduction models will be used on the production model. And this only weighs 500kg more than the old defender 110, but that's only safety equipment, so it's not that bad
Try carrying 10 of 50kg bags of ballast on your back to see what it really means. Or more sensibly, carry ten 50kg bags of anything [yes they are still available] from one place to another, 100 metres apart.
@@harleyrobertson6746 That’s a massive amount of extra weight as I illustrated. It effects everything from handling to fuel economy to the performance on and off road to the amount of payload it can carry while also towing, to the class of MOT inspection it has, to its speed limits on certain roads as a commercial vehicle in many countries.
Having owned a 1997 Defender 190 which was the last year they were legally imported into the USA, I would have chosen the Ineos if it was available. Seems very capable while offering creature comforts not available on the Defender. I know later Defenders in the UK had a better interior.
I wouldn't say they were better, they maybe looked nicer, but you lost more and more storage and made it harder to get at the windscreen wiper motor, the puma fixed the terrible a/c but you lost the flap up vents. They never got it perfect because of penny pinching.
I quite like this truck, it's a real good idea to fill the gap left by the old Defender. The demand was indeed strong. I'm surprised there's no V8 option, I thought it should retain BMW's 4.4. I hope the beeping and grinding noise when turning the wheel will be gone on production examples 😂
I'm hopeing when they tap into the north American market a LS might appear. Ticks all the boxes. Cheap , plentiful, parts everyware. And easy to work on.
@@dad_jokes_4ever226 right! I was thinking surely I couldn't be the only one to notice that as well! Maybe just a seat belt warning, as Matt was wearing a harness, not the "standard" belt?
A view from the UK. Some of you may not know this but when Land Rover announced they were stopping production of the Defender owner of Ineos Jim Ratcliffe asked if he could but the car and tooling off LR and continue manufacturing. Initially LD were receptive to his offer then......sat down and thought again. Guess why. Yup, they got frightened that it would continue to be popular and embarrass LR executives as this car IS LR, the face of LR. Some things are so utilitarian, functional that you just can't improve them, this is one. It does need sexy bodywork. It doesn't need 500hp. It's solely designed as a working tool not posing around London in. What's the point of the new defender. It's just like all the other cars in their stable - posing mobiles. Any chance of this over excitable presenter presenting LR cars on the corner of Bond street their natural environment??
This car looks amazing. This is exactly what people want. Landrover came out with a stupidly expensive toy no-one wants to take offroading because it looks pretty. Anything that looks pretty and goes off road isn't going to stay that way. This is rugged, scratches and knocks only add to the character.
Even though it's generic in its design it has some character that many new cars just don't have they try to have as many angles or big grills just for the wow factor

Sure, they could've stuck a caricature body on the new car like Mercedes. Meh, would it have made it any better?
But land-rover is a business with the goal of selling cars. They definitely made the right choice, however you personally feel about that car
I would have thought that the 60/40 rear split seats would align with the door openings, i.e. the 40 split with the small opening and the 60 split with the wider one.
Its got lots of obvious design flaws like that...given the ground up nature, its very surprising such obvious things were missed
Not only that but he showed the rear seat backs don't lay down level with the rear floor making it nice and flat.
The fact the seats don’t fold flat is crazy. Rules the car out for me, the things massive, but there less usable “tip run” space than my old Mercedes ml, which has a fully flat floor.
@@sheerluckholmes5468 That's because the battery and electronics are underneath the rear seat. Supposedly they will be in a waterproof box.
Good to see Henry catchpole in the background there
These are dope!

How is the old defender dangerous in modern traffic?
I can understand why LR would want to take them to court for copyright but as far as I know, copyright only lasts 25 years. I suspect LR are pissed off because they discontinued their own Defender and perhaps wished they had of made this. This Grenadier looks like it will become a real commercial truck and not something for the city.
I heard that part of that sue was a study, in which they were presenting a silhouette of the Grenadier and asking people what car is on the picture and most of them replied simply a jeep :)
Highly doubt that since the new Defender is selling like hotcakes.
The EU emissions killed off the old defender, land rover should have kept the shell and upgraded the engine. Instead they've given us a chunky range rover. Ineos will kill off the new defender.
@@mrpete1972 I wonder if crash tests were a factor too? I love the old style Defender more though definitely.
@@mrpete1972 this won’t kill off the new defender, the new defender is better in nearly every way, and it’s starting price is even cheaper, you also have a lot more options when it comes to engines etc, You get more vehicle for your money along with the name of a icon.
Love seeing the smile faces in all journalists driving the Grenadier.
Mat !! I think this review of any vehicle is the best that I have ever seen, very explanative with no daft gimmicks thrown in for audience entertainment. I also liked the way you immediately put your hand up to boo-boos (a big tic for that) Factually brilliant, I want an INEOS and will look not further for a sales description of this vehicle. Thank you very much for this video..... as an experienced off roader and teacher can I be very rude and be a little of a nit-picker Don't put your thumbs inside the steering wheel when off roading, if you hit an unseen obstacle that twitches the wheels you can break your thumbs ...nit pic over thanks again for a brilliant review.
The 450 nm of torque from the engine might seem low, but an 8 speed torque converter gearbox offers low enough gearing, so that what you want is a nice flat torque curve.
Sorry I fell asleep halfway reading through that..
It must be detuned, because in my BMW with the same engine it’s producing 620nm of torque.
@@Theocurrie Exactly, it's tuned for offroad use, which favours low-end torque and high reliability, but of course with a ECU remap you can get to your numbers easily

I can't believe the idling engine low bass sound got recorded. Nice one!
If Landrover had designed the new Defender like this, they would have gone out of buisness.......
@@maxtorque2277 how do you mean?
@@maxtorque2277 I agree
@@adveyrastogi3486 Because it looks like a really badly modified version of the old defender, not a cool one like say Twisted. Why has it got all the 'bits' stuck to the doors?
@@IslaSprollie If it would be a genuine LR design it obviously would not look like a bad mod. This is still a tough well built car no matter how it looks :)
Bloody love that centre console
Another dream vehicle. I truly wish the diesel was coming to the US.
I love it! As a Defender owner (x2 Perentie) I will definitely give a Grenider driver a wave.
I'd love to see an offroad comparison video with the production version of this car and the new Defender. Both on offroad tires!
They both will do exactly the same. Throw new Toyota 4Runner in the mix even. All will perform the same. The difference can cone only in offroad situations where you want to break one of these vehicles. But All the normal offroad trails, all of the 4x4 will do ok.
Both with lockers specified.
..and the old defender, the g-63 (because why not, and then they have pedigree to share after all), and one of the old Land Cruisers too if doable
if the new defender works and drives it will be the same (however they have shitty quality control) -
I have the new Defender P300 and having had a 1998 Defender 90 for 12 years, the new one wins hands down. I can certainly report that the air suspension really excels in the wild outback areas of Henley-on-Thames towards Nettlebed.
😁😁😁😁
I should think is does for £80,000
I actually really like this, some really good design features, love the aircraft style roof switches, cool 😎
the split tailgate is brilliant!
The first car I’ve truly wanted in ages. Looks like a car you could keep for the rest of your life.
But all of those things were some of the(many) flaws that the defender has always had so its completely on brand
I am in Australia and planning to purchase one of these when they are released here in September. Provided they drive well on the road. So far I have seen many many reviews offroad and have no doubts about their capabilities but not a single review of how they drive on motorways, dirt/gravel roads and B roads.
These are gonna sell like hotcakes in Australia. Way better than a 70 series cruiser
Of course it doesn't drive well on the road, not that any ladder frame chassis off roader does. The steering is also awful and doesn't self centre.
@@Yimello It does drive extremely well on the road. Surprisingly good. Motorway, highway, back country road or old gravel road. It just eats them up
I am looking forward to a head to head to head offroad test with the old and the modern Defender!
This is one of the best reviews Mat has ever done.
I love the chassis demo that the dealer made👍
For the production models, I hope that 'bong' isn't as persistent as it was in the prototype! And I assume they'll stop the steering wheel from creaking too!
That noise nearly drove me crazy. I had to fast forward through the parts with it
I've been waiting for the Grenadier for several years now and in that time the price has doubled!
That price is ludacris. Should be £25K topps
They'd indeed make more profit if they price it lower and sell more instead of pricing like its a luxury car and only sell to the wealthy
For that kind of money I could have a ground up rebuild on my defender and still have change!
This is a rival for a G-wagon not an original defender, I can’t see many farmers splashing out £48000 for the base model grenadier. The original defender became obsolete for its target market: farmers! Farmers mostly moved to Japanese vehicles as they’re far cheaper and more reliable.
