Finally an issue I can provide some good insight into. I spent about 6 months chasing issues on a 93 nissan hardbody which has the same engine. A few things you should check. First check for vacuum leaks, these engines run like garbage if there's any extra air getting in that isn't being read by the MAF. Replacing the MAF would also be a good troubleshooting step, but make sure you get a Hitachi or OEM replacement. I ended up taking apart the throttle body and sealing all the mating surfaces with RTV to ultimately resolve my main issue. Which ended up being an intake leak causing it to run lean. Check your fuel pressure, I also had a bad fuel pump only putting out about 8 psi at idle. During the troubleshooting I also replaced every sensor on the engine, their aren't that many so it's only a couple hundred bucks of parts. Given it's over 30 years old with no idea about what's been done to it not a bad idea just for some peace of mind. It really sounds like it's running on 3 cylinders I would pull each plug while idling to see if one doesn't make a difference. Also check timing, 15 DBTC is factory. Check for any error codes on the ECU they're OBD1 so it's not super helpful, but could provide some insight.

Chris please keep the KA24, the single cams flow so well, super under rated engine solid trans, stock engine with a turbo and a Jimmy tune you can push it to 300, stick some rods pistons and valve springs in it and you could have a super budget 500whp s13
Are the plug wires put on in the correct order? Does the car have the correct plugs? is the enamel on any of the plugs cracked? Is the coil good? is the ignition timing good? was the timing belt changed and is the cam timing set back correctly?
While it is runnin pull a plug wire and see if the idle stays the same. Do that to each cylinder to find which one isn't fiering. Fuel (possible clogged injector) or spark (possible timing or cap/rotor).
2700 in this market is fire 🤣i picked up my 91 Hatch for 3000 like 3 years ago in the same condition + more dings/dents. You can order frame rail repair kits for cheap and the holes in the floor are easy Also please document the strut tower repair. I have to do mine still and would love a reference 🫡
I think it would be cool to put small wheels on the 240 and slam it. Just for a fun “retro” style car. Keep the interior all stock and just blast some ac and rage the backroads.
My Corolla sounded like that when I mixed up the plug wires. It’s definitely not firing on all cylinders. That or the ignition timing is way the tf off. It’s fixable tho. If it’s got compression it’s worth saving
i was always told use the banks money not yours. i have 5 credit cards and in a year my credit shot up to mid 700s and climbing. just make sure to get the riht cards and pay them off asap and youre good to go. and like Ruddy said the rewards are very beneficial if you know how to do it. Tip; you can even buy gold with your credit cards, sell that gold right away and stack up rewards that way. i learned that from a guy who has basically free hotels from marriot anytime he wants to go, and flights along with that. and its basically free, although you will lose a tad bit selling the gold unless you can buy it at market value.

chris there’s a drain plug at the bottom of the tank it’s a 12mm makes it 10x easier, also i highly suggest taking the pump out and having a look at that sock and the tank in general they get FILTHY and rusty and you won’t know how bad it is till you get a good look in it
It comes down to time and effort! You know you can do it but do you want to? I for one would like to see the best you can do on a budget build. Getting a chassis from your friends in Australia or in the States can't be that bad. Comes down to logistics really and again time. Put it up for a rainy day or start right away and juggle it into the other builds that you already are juggling. Come on Chris I know you can do! Does anybody else feel the same?

Rust is always bigger than it looks, it's fixable but would be best to buy a rear ended California shell. I did something similar on a civic recently. P.S. I could come knock that out and you wouldn't know it had rust, tried contacting you to come work at one point but can prove myself with a 10K budget and have plenty of experience and can prove it.

Sometimes you can get the strut towers from factory or from what they recommend to fix they call it “sections” or you can get it in an assembly and then you can cut it at “factory seams” weld er up and put some seam sealer on it and call it a day. I HIGHLY recommend mig welding WITH GAS not only will your welds look better but it will let you get a feel easier
Got one identical to that one 2 weeks ago, silver, blue interior, pignose. Has some rust around the window/roof and door jams. Looking at this one makes me feel better about mine lol
Get that thing stripped down and on a rotisserie (like a bird dood) and whip out the welder. Once you fix those frame rails and strut towers, throw in a junkyard 6.0 LS with a cam swap and spray it.
You can't be that mad about the purchase when you get a steal like that. But one thing my father always said was YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Meaning you buy cheap you get cheap but occasionally you can come across a good deal. I can't wait for the S13 rebuild it will definitely be great practice on bodywork and fabrication

I'd advance the heck out of the ignition timing first... then if that don't work I'd look into those crappy saturated injectors that nissan uses that always go bad, the engines good, we know this much, so whats left is either ignition timing, or injectors... i have my doubts that the cam timing jumped a couple teeth due to the good compression scores so we can probably rule that out. Whatever this issue is, its got to be something simple.
I built my FA5 for sub 8k, not including the car lol. Car was $7500 when I bought it 2 years ago. It’s a pretty basic build but I love it. Semi built NA K20Z3 is pretty mint.
I think It would be cool as hell if you restored it properly. Kinda of like a barn find build . Put a nice sr20 in it with a turbo kit and make it really nice like the one Tommy gave away
I’d hang onto it, strip it down to the bare chassis and during downtime use it as a learning tool on how to replace structural panels, proper welding techniques and metal working skills to create sheet metal parts that you might not be able to buy anymore.

You have it now and its an ideal car to learn some fabrication skills. Sell all the interior out of it and make some money back. Fix the structural rust and could sell it as a drift shell. Wouldn't loose any more and you have learnt a new skill.
You can just hear it's not running right at all, someone must have messed up the timing or something for it to run that badly. If you can get the engine running right I think even with the frame damage it would be worth a build series at some point, the interior and exterior are just too nice to give up so easily.
Order some frame rails, cut n weld struts and swap in a LS or Ebay turbo special it and you got a party car, dont make it pretty just use as a thrasher to drift with all the boys
You could have a bad coil. Or a vacuum leak. A stuck injector. May not even be getting enough fuel. The frame can be patched. The car seems like it has some power when feathering the gas. Just needed to spend more time with it to figure it out.

Beside the obvios rust repair, TAKE YOUR TIME, buy oe replacement part to refresh the engine, put some money into a good head gasket and some head stud, get a eBay CXracing turbo kit, eBay clutch kit stage 3, coilovers, angle kit, weld that diff get and ecu and tune for 300 wheel and drive it like you stole but most importan TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!!!!!
it's not really in such bad state, i've seen way worse getting repaired + it's all stock. it's an easy profit, or just a cool car to own. these are getting more and more expensive after all and there's less and less of them especially with the ammount of people converting these to drift cars. at very least it can be useful as a parts car

should definitely check the firing order and make sure they had it right. Then if good timing light. If that's good pull and clean injectors

i have the feeling Injectors (and lines) probably complete clogged, old gas in tank and may be rusty. Still a good deal if u DIY everything, keep it!
