In regards to the 10mm socket you found, I’m not sure how normal the occurrence is, but when I was working through my Blazer, I dropped one that fell and bounced around until it got itself into the frame tubing that the bumper mounts are mounted on. Which made for a very interesting discovery for me, to say the least. I found a telescopic rod and hot glued a small neo magnet on the end, to try and fish out my 10mm. Well, what I pulled out the first 3 times weren’t a 10mm. Instead, I pulled out some random and strangely large, yet very short bolts, that I’m still unsure what they could even be from to begin with. The next time I tried, I got my socket but, I was not done yet. Had to verify that there wasn’t anything else at that point. Pulled a couple more identical bolts out, and of all things, an original rubber tired Hot Wheels Shelby Cobra that was only made in 1988, 2 years after the model of the truck. So I could only assume, it was from the original owner and that his kid had been playing around and either intentionally hid, or accidentally dropped the car down into the frame tube, to not be seen again until I went fishing for my 10mm.

Awesome! But @14:02 I'm surprised you don't have a fluid evacuator. Suck the fluid out from the dipstick tube before dropping the pan. Saves a ton of cleanup time. I keep an evacuator just for trans fluid, when modding valve bodies or modulator and the pan has to keep coming off I'll even re-use the fluid.

Heat is one of the biggest killers of a trans and having adequate cooling is paramount, provided there's room, a dedicated cooler is worthy upgrade. Having pulled the pan on the trans, upgrading to both a Sonnax corvette style servo and 2-3 shift valve mod would've been a good/cheap upgrade...the 1st increases the servo apply area by about 30 percent over stock and the 2nd offers a marked improvement in durability. Using the shift valve modification and putting the shifter in D3 (rather than overdrive) applies the over-run clutch in the first three gears, which improves durability by not abusing the input sprag. In the std configuration, the over-run clutch is only applied when the shifter is in D3 after the transmission upshifts into Third gear.

    • @andoletube
      @andoletube ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

You have to be careful with dedicated trans coolers. The vast majority of them are undersized for the job. Most radiator (water) coolers take a lot more heat out of the transmission than a dedicated (air) cooler. Unless you have room for a very large one, it's better to stick with factory - even more so in this case because Alex has sourced an up specced aftermarket radiator. I doubt he'd gain anything by running a dedicated cooler.

18:31 When I was 16 I had a 1997 GMC Jimmy, the rear diff cover was rusted through and leaking so I wanted to replace it.
Well when I ordered the new one, I realized there was no fill/drain plug. Took me forever to find the fill over by the driveshaft yoke (This was before Google 😅) and I had bought a regular quart of gear oil (squeeze bags didn't exist) and I didn't have a pump so ended up getting the pump off of a hand soap dispenser, 😂😂 the gear oil was so thick I bet it took me an hour just to get a quart in.
Didn't help it was in the middle of winter, and I didn't have a garage, so I was just laying out on the freezing ground pumping gear oil lol great times.

Alex on gm cars with no plug, and ford. If you leave yourself 2 bolts on the front and rear corners on the side you're going to stand when you bring the pan down, you loosen those bolts but don't remove them, the rear one you only bring out about half way, then, let the pan come down on the far side, it'll use the bolts you left in to keep the pan higher on your side vs the side you took all the bolts out of keeping you dry.

I got my 93 Typhoon used with 2230 miles back in 94. Insane power but heat soaked almost after one good pull. Did quite a few mods that were available back then. Best thing is to delete the factory self leveling shocks in rear, delete that pump and put in Bilstein adjustable all the way around. Added rear sway bar, upgraded intercooler and pump to high volume. Had it for 8 years and did quite a more updates as they became available. Note these engines came out with a 2 bolt main..... To get any real HPs out of them need to go with a four bolt main. Was by far my favorite ride I ever owned. Good memories to see one getting revived with the joy these trucks provided. 😉 That factory transmission should have been banging 2nd and 3rd as it had a factory shift kit and shifts should have been more pronounced than what this video provided due to you not "Getting on it"...your gonna love this truck. 😁

I almost bought a Typhoon in 2002 but ended up going a little more practical and bought an extended cab Silverado. The Typhoon was around $15k and the Silverado was $13k. Biggest reason for me going for the Silverado was the bed. Not to mention passenger room. I had three kids and the Typhoon would have been one seat short for me. Right now, I'd really like to have a Syclone.

    It's awesome.
It has channels & grooves molded into to help with draining.
(( stiffens the plastic at the same time ))
Plus, it's easier to see if fluid has deposits or anything in it.

Im a heavy equipment mechanic, and i work on a lot of 40 ton dumptrucks that haul salt in the winter. Watching this with envy...
If I see little screws like on the starter, I give up before I even try to get them out. I start by heating fasteners cherry red and plan on replacing everything. Spent 3 hours on Friday trying to remove the crankcase breather on a Cummins ISC 8.3. It ended up getting cut apart after one of the screws took the plastic mounting ear out with it. Most of the mounting bolts broke off, except for one which took the threaded insert out with it. The bolt shanks that are still stuck in the head are a Monday problem. I will double up on nuts and weld them on to hopefully back them out.

I'm pausing at the battery part to say: agreed, i learned the hard way too recently. Was working on rebuilding my TBI unit in my 1990 S10 pickup and as I was loosening a few bolts, my flexible ratchet slipped from my hand and touched the exposed positive terminal on the alternator, so it ended up welding itself to it and the intake. I had to knock the dang thing off with a lot of force, but that was probably the scariest moment I had. ALWAYS, disconnect negative before working.

Power probes are super sweet. if I’m not mistaken, I was only half paying attention to that part when you tested the pump, but… when you have the plug, unplugged, you need the ground lead to test if the pumps actually bad, I’ve done that a time or two myself over the years. It’s a real easy oversight. But on that truck working or not I’d still replace it also just because. I really like that on your channel you tend to use dealer or factory parts as much as you can.

Alex the reason the transfers case was over filled is the seal separating the transmission and transfer case is bad. The pressure from the transmission overcomes the seal, pushing into the transfer case. That’s why the transfer case was over filled and therefore the transmission is probably low. Just a heads up hopefully you take care of it. Lovin the typhoon content!🙌

Man, the amount of work you put in and the details... Every time I watch your videos, from time to time I look at how much is left until the end and I don't want it to end. If TH-cam comes up with a double Like button, I'll definitely smash it. 😆

For trans drain pans next time don’t take all the bolt out. Break 2 free but leave them in after undoing them 1 rotation, pick 2 that are opposite the shortest side of the pan. Next break the trans pan gasket seal usually at the narrowest end of the pan. Fluid will usually come out that end in a semi controlled manner and as the fluid slows continue to undo the bolts it will let the pan hang lower letting more fluid out.

Nice work and great video. Thanks for showcasing the up-side of hoarding...(the "keep that, I might need it later" mentality). Also...I'm just not sure about turbo blankets that ignite that easily...I mean...that was a sustained fire that could do some damage, or spread to other engine components.

That original intake is pretty similar looking to the one on the 4.3 vortec in the s10 blazer, routed differently of course, but it was one of the first things I changed lol, being a kid who didnt know very much at the time. But I have seen some of these with a factory look but def a much increased size. But I gotta say this is one of the reasons I love your channel, you go the extra mile to make these vehicles better while keeping that factory look, you care about the presentation, the background knowledge, the upgrades and removing the hackery that you might find. It's so awesome to watch. After you did that brake fluid test I was wondering if you could use a multimeter to do it. I looked it up and I guess you can.
