@@AUTOT3KHCL Triumph increased valve gaps on 2017 ? onward, to allow for a bit more wear, but 84,000 miles 😮! My exhausts valves were just out at 12,000 miles…
Indeed well needed Information. We can do a lot of maintenance ourselves without affecting the warranty, but the more complex ones let the dealer do it, they are the one who knows. The warranty will cover us in a worst case scenario.
Well when you have that unnamed dealer over on Blackfoot charging people $1300 to do the job, somebody might need to budget for a month or two to get it done and go over the miles!
I've started ordering all my triumph parts from Argyll up in Edmonton and they've been more then happy to help out with shipping so maybe an option for you to avoid going to the Calgary place
Do you have a video where you actually show how you measure the valve clearance? Do you measure it with a digital calliper? Nice videos by the way. I enjoy your vids the most, very clear explanation.
I do have a complete series showing how to do a tiger 800 valve adjust start to finish including removing the Plastics and tank my keyboard on my phone is a little screwed up otherwise I'd post the link for you but if you go into my how to section it's in there
Is this usual? Whenever valve clearance checks are done on Japanese bikes people say they've been way over the recommended mileage and still within spec.
Thank you very much! Just bought a speed triple 06 with 36k miles with a light valve ticking sound. I’m sure the first owner haven’t done any maintenance at all. As i got the bike literally for free ($900) I’ll try to adjust the valves and hope to have it in spec again lol.
Bought a tiger800 w 47000km Ticking sound is common on those engine and probably not a valve sound ! Unless its reallyyyy loud then probably cam tensioner. Check different sounds on youtube
My 2018 XRX is at 12,385 miles. I'll ride it through the rest of the season, then tackle the service. I usually do most of my work, replaced the gas tank, added crash and luggage bars. How difficult is the cam chain and valve adjustments?
Just picked my 800 XCA from 20 tkm service last weekend. No need to adjust valves, said authorized dealer in Finland. I hope they followed tolerances from manufacturer :)
Thanks AutoT3K... got a 2016 Tiger 800..first valve adjust...they tell me I need to replace 4 shims..I'm over the time..at 24,000K...not "adjust" but replace...
It's adjusting by replacing the shims. Changing the size of the shim to adjust the valve clearance. Doesn't sound like they're trying to fool you or anything
Did the valves on my buddy's Legend 900 at about 70,000 miles. Three valves were slightly out of spec but still running fine. You are being picky. It will run just fine until the gap is zero then the bike is hard or no start.
I hope you are correct about this😂 took the bike to a shop for its first 20k major service and there was no need for adjustment made to the valves but now 4 years later the bike now sits at 45k, should i take it for a valve clearance check????
Can you share what adjustments you needed to do on your the first 20k and then again at the 40k. I bought my 2014 800xc it was over 21k and now at 22k and don't know if the adjustment was done. Should I be worried and get it done asap ? Thanks
Going to do an adjust myself this weekend, just got warm enough to ride without a helmet and I've noticed a slight tick. You think the adjustment will fix it or should I start looking for a head?
Any time I've ridden mine without a helmet... its so noisy. I think thats just a character of the triple. If its a new tick and more of a clacking... id consider the tensioner and chain guides before I replaced a head
@@AUTOT3KHCL Yes, just seen it’s km doh. I’m in UK so miles for me. Did you do cam timing, the chain can stretch first 20.000 km ? @@AUTOT3KHCL Hi, thanks for confirming, just seen a few vids, (muddysump) I was hoping to just to a gap check, but most seemed to have chain stretch and tight exhaust valves at your 20k. Hey I'm also west coast Canada and looking at the 900 GT pro. Little different but I'm sure close enough. What are the service intervals and costs at the dealership if you know? Any big issues I should know possibly? All the answers from the dealer are too biased. Thanks if you have any answers it's much appreciated
Well im actually in alberta but same thing. Yamaha is 24k for a valve adjust i thought and I bet its similar labour so dealer will probably want $1200-$1500
How often have you checked the valves on your car ? Why is it that bike manufacturers insist that the valves are checked so frequently compared to petrol cars. Imagine being told your new car needs a valve check after a year, or a cam chain. Bikes are made to the same, or better, engineering specs as cars, they really shouldnt be any need for it.. Ok, so some of us can carry the work out ourselves, but most cant or dont bother. The dealerships are raking it in. Happy days...
Good point. Almost all Japanese and Korean cars DO NOT use any hydraulic valve lash adjustment technology. They are solid valve lifters all the way, and yet you never hear of any valve problems whether it’s a 4 6 or 8 cylinder engine and all of them are 4 valves per cylinder. The dealers never mention it. As long as you change your oil frequently and use an OEM air filter changed on time, your engine will blow past 200,000 miles (300,000K) and the camshafts cover has never been off. Yet with motorcycles, it’s a subject that pops up as often as drive chain maintenance. Look at U-tube and see if anyone is popping off their Asian car cam cover to check the valves. You won’t find much or maybe nothing about it.
Not sure what you car you drive rev s to 11.500 rpm ? Think how many times those valves go up and down compared to your car, so yes, they do need it. And who do you know who replaced their cam chain after a year being as they last 70,000 miles ?
Thanks for the great videos!!! Shame on me; I’ve got 27k miles on my 2012 tiger 800 and I’m doing the first valve check. I discovered that my intake valves are to spec. But my exhaust valves are so far off I don’t trust my findings; I’m getting .13mm-.15mm on all exhaust valves (Haynes manual has spec .325mm-.375mm) Does this sound crazy to you? Am I making a mistake? Any advice would be much appreciated.
That does sound very tight. Try rotating the engine over a few times and reset yourself then measure again. If you come up with the exact same measurements then you may be right and definitely double check after you swap the shims
