Anyone who watches the clip after the fact cannot experience what exactly it was like to watch it live because when it happened NO ONE knew she was going to hurt her ankle and EVERYONE thought USAs chances at a gold were lost to the Russians. She was our last hope and the last gymnast and she fell and hurt herself on her first vault. We all thought it was over. And we all WAITED while she was looked over by the doctors and they were saying she would not be able to do another vault. Then as the last seconds of time she had between vaults drew near, Bella took her over to the mat where she stood up and hobbled over to the starting spot, ready to go again. We couldnt believe she was going to try agsin. Then silence and anticipation as she took off AT FULL SPEED on her injured ankle sprinting toward the vault, when she sprang off of the trampoline off of the vault and high into the air, spinning around perfectly and coming down HARD only to STICK the landing on ONE LEG as her thigh shuddered when she struggled to stand fully upright ON ONE LEG! And she did it, and she held her arms high and the crowd ERUPTED in the loudest cheers as she turned on one leg to hold her arms high for the judges and then collapsed on the ground. Watching it then as it happened it was THE GREATEST FEAT AT THE GREATEST AND MOST IMPORTANT MOMENT which gave USA the WIN! The most impressive moment in sports ive ever seen launching her into her place as the MOST INCREDIBLE ATHLETE ever to compete in sports. Im a grown man and it brought me to tears. Nothing like it before or since.

But people fondly remember her clutch performance. Being an Olympian in any sport takes hard work, dedication, determination… What Kerri did takes heart. And that’s in short supply even with Olympians. She may not have won individual medals, but her legacy will live on far longer than most of those who did.

Wow! She's so beautiful, and what a CLASS act! And that voice!! She has the heart of a champion. I had a severe ankle sprain/torn ligaments last year, and heard that "pop" sound. I am still astonished that she was able to do what she did after that, with the second vault. It brings tears to me eyes every time I watch it, because I know some of what she was dealing with and pushing through, and it's almost impossible, and also because I'm just so inspired by and proud of her. This is truly one of the very, very, gutsiest performances I've ever seen or known of. In fact, since yesterday, I've been thinking of what would be the most inspiring and moving sports performances ever, and although there are others, the two that keep coming up and are solidly at the top of my list by themselves are this, Kerri's second vault in '96, and the "Bobby Murcer game" in 1979, after Thurmon Munson, the Yankees' team captain, was killed in a plane crash during the season. (I encourage you to watch the video of that; it should still be here on YT and it's less than 15 minutes long, I believe). Kerri is a true inspiration! God bless her! I know it was a true team effort, but wow, talk about your all-time gut-checks; she literally carried the team on her back at that moment, on one good leg. I feel like writing more, but I realize that words just aren't going to be enough. Just wow! I'm 50 years of age, and this is easily in my top list of all-time greatest sports moments. Hi, Rose! We never know what someone is really going through. Sometimes, what we know or is reported is not necessarily false, but not the whole story. I can only speculate, but it must be something deep, because these ladies work most of their lives to prepare for these moments, and Simone has already shown that she can do it. I know Simone represented the USA spectacularly in 2016 and in the past, and she's a star (multiple gold medals). She has what it takes. I remember way back, there was a male Japanese how broke his ankle on a vault. After that he pulled a 9.7 off the horizonal high bar. He landed with a similar style.

I have tried and can not put into words what watching this girl do that last vault felt like for me, a girl who loved gymnastics. What posters were on my walls as a preteen? No boys, just gymnasts. Shannon Miller was the one for me. But seeing this girl push through extraordinary pain, I can't come up with any other words that respect and integrity. Such immense heart this young woman showed. On a separate note, the Karolyi's, the husband and wife team that coached many of the "Magnificent 7" were later recognized to be extremely hard, to the point of blatant abuse, on their gymnasts. So when she recalled being told by Bela Karolyi that the president was on the phone and that she was intimidated/scared of him, it hits different knowing how he worked those girls, teenage girls, to working more hours than you can believe, through pain, tears and in Keri's situation, through broken effing bones. Happy they won the gold, happy to see the Magnificent 7 win the first gold in women's gymnastics.

She wasn't abused. They were old school trainers who pushed the no name American team into Olympic greats. People also don't understand the social impact defeating the Russians had for that team. It was a time the soviet union just fell & there was still that America vs the Soviets mentality. It was like winning a mini-war. I dont agree with Bela's supposed "encouragement" of eating little food but the other stuff they did, they tried to make their training environment intense so that when big meets happened it was like any other day. Bela once said there's many great gymnasts you never heard of because when it came to competition they just couldn't handle the crowds & pressure.

Dude really?? Man, let me tell you I got mad respect for her, bro. I saw it when it happened, and that was one of the gutsiest performances I've seen in the history of sports. Most of today's athletes, not so much. That woman, to this day, still deserves a great deal of respect.
What many people don’t realize is that even if she hadn’t landed that vault, team USA would have won regardless. Instead of winning by about 0.820, the margin would have been about 0.31.
They wouldn’t have won. her landing that vault made the stadium explode which messed up the Russians big time. Had she fallen the Russians probably would’ve got a lot better scores and the US would’ve came in silver.
I remember they had nearly an insurmountable lead with the two girls still to vault, and the announcers saying that they only needed one fairly decent vault, out of their 4 tries, to win. They were not able to rely on the Russians making mistakes in their event.

The Olympic champion that year did not score a 9.9. Strut made it official but even at the moment if they had a bit more time to loo at the scores they would have seen that it was all but wrapped up. She really just went up to carry struggle after struggle, and man was it done well. Yeah, that was a pun, but like, to an extent she did Kerri the team as much as they had to then carry her, and that wasn't a tiny struggle, it was a gigantic challenge for Mrs. Strug. As someone who's good at twisting his ankles walking around, I feel nothing in comparison to the legendary event this one was. I wasn't even alive yet and here we are, impressed by this.
I’ve done that before, my ankles aren’t the same years after. It sounds like stepping on snow, then you can’t feel it, numb other than hot and cold feelings, it swells, you can’t move it, you’ve torn your ligaments, that’s what’s so odd about this, the human body has functions, she defied that. Shouldn’t have been possible to do what she did. At all. I can’t imagine it and I’ve torn ligaments a few times and was a gymnast myself for years, I just don’t understand it. Mind over matter I guess. I’m British and one thing I love about the US is they are like us British, they win or die. Bravery doesn’t come into it, you have no choice. You were born a winner. You don’t bleed red, you bleed the colour of your ancestors, the colour of the flag, you bleed gold if you have to.
poor girl, I can't imagine the amount of pressure she was under at only 15. You can tell here she wasn't just an Olympic Gold Medalist but she was deep in the throws of an eating disorder that was stealing her youth as well. Her teeth are literally pegs. Everyone is making fun of her voice, but the reality is she was robbed of getting to go through puberty in a healthy way because she had so much stress on her to compete and was also starving herself, so her voice never even would have had a chance to develop.
To think that Simone Biles hasn't seen Kerri Strug's (basically) "farewell to gymnastics" interview tour, and isn't "enlightened" to ignore her body's messages - physical and mental - is a fairly wild assumption. This video, and Elena Mukhina's story (y'know, the young woman who ignored her physical and mental wellbeing for her coach/team/country, broke her leg, predicted she would break her neck, and then broke her neck) probably "enlightened" Simone to do what these phenoms before her SHOULD HAVE DONE (and what they actually wanted to do) - take a step back and take care of themselves.
As Strug says in this interview, she did it because her team and country came first. She is a professional and a true champion. Not a lucky coward who quits when they get some twisties BS.
She walked out in high heels no hint off a limp or that tens therapy she doing must have healed it but she badly sprained it more like. One can still walk with a sprain after a few weeks off therapy. But people keep saying she broke it.

I truly believe she just doesn’t realize how wrong this is because she’d been worked so damn hard and taught from a young age to just keep going at all costs. I don’t think people understand the strength it takes to say enough is enough. Had that ankle given out during her routine, it would’ve been so much worse. Ending your career for a gold medal? It all screams people pleasing to me. Someone people need something that gives them worth and she’s mentioned in another interview this moment is that for her.

She wasn't abused. They were old school trainers who pushed the no name American team into Olympic greats. People also don't understand the social impact defeating the Russians had for that team. It was a time the soviet union just fell & there was still that America vs the Soviets mentality. It was like winning a mini-war. I dont agree with Bela's supposed "encouragement" of eating little food but the other stuff they did, they tried to make their training environment intense so that when big meets happened it was like any other day. Bela once said there's many great gymnasts you never heard of because when it came to competition they just couldn't handle the crowds & pressure.

What many people don’t realize is that even if she hadn’t landed that vault, team USA would have won regardless. Instead of winning by about 0.820, the margin would have been about 0.31.
They wouldn’t have won. her landing that vault made the stadium explode which messed up the Russians big time. Had she fallen the Russians probably would’ve got a lot better scores and the US would’ve came in silver.
I remember they had nearly an insurmountable lead with the two girls still to vault, and the announcers saying that they only needed one fairly decent vault, out of their 4 tries, to win. They were not able to rely on the Russians making mistakes in their event.
She sealed it. It was not a sure thing.
@@haoleboysurfec2730 actually it was all but a sure thing. The last 2 Russian gymnasts needed to score 9.9 on floor and that was not going to happen. The Olympic champion that year did not score a 9.9. Strut made it official but even at the moment if they had a bit more time to loo at the scores they would have seen that it was all but wrapped up. She really just went up to carry struggle after struggle, and man was it done well. Yeah, that was a pun, but like, to an extent she did Kerri the team as much as they had to then carry her, and that wasn't a tiny struggle, it was a gigantic challenge for Mrs. Strug. As someone who's good at twisting his ankles walking around, I feel nothing in comparison to the legendary event this one was. I wasn't even alive yet and here we are, impressed by this.

I’ve done that before, my ankles aren’t the same years after. It sounds like stepping on snow, then you can’t feel it, numb other than hot and cold feelings, it swells, you can’t move it, you’ve torn your ligaments, that’s what’s so odd about this, the human body has functions, she defied that. Shouldn’t have been possible to do what she did. At all. I can’t imagine it and I’ve torn ligaments a few times and was a gymnast myself for years, I just don’t understand it. Mind over matter I guess. I’m British and one thing I love about the US is they are like us British, they win or die. Bravery doesn’t come into it, you have no choice. You were born a winner. You don’t bleed red, you bleed the colour of your ancestors, the colour of the flag, you bleed gold if you have to.
poor girl, I can't imagine the amount of pressure she was under at only 15. You can tell here she wasn't just an Olympic Gold Medalist but she was deep in the throws of an eating disorder that was stealing her youth as well. Her teeth are literally pegs. Everyone is making fun of her voice, but the reality is she was robbed of getting to go through puberty in a healthy way because she had so much stress on her to compete and was also starving herself, so her voice never even would have had a chance to develop.

To think that Simone Biles hasn't seen Kerri Strug's (basically) "farewell to gymnastics" interview tour, and isn't "enlightened" to ignore her body's messages - physical and mental - is a fairly wild assumption. This video, and Elena Mukhina's story (y'know, the young woman who ignored her physical and mental wellbeing for her coach/team/country, broke her leg, predicted she would break her neck, and then broke her neck) probably "enlightened" Simone to do what these phenoms before her SHOULD HAVE DONE (and what they actually wanted to do) - take a step back and take care of themselves.
As Strug says in this interview, she did it because her team and country came first. She is a professional and a true champion. Not a lucky coward who quits when they get some twisties BS.
