Bela Karolyi is such an extreme creep. He died last month, but lots of gymnasts are probably happy to see him go. He did nothing to stop the sexual abuse of those gymnasts at the hands of Larry Nassar. Many of the gymnasts have come forward to complain about how they were treated, and many of the other coaches have complained about how he keeps pushing himself into the limelight to attract attention to himself. He would jump barriers at the Olympics to hug the gymnasts he trained after performances, but he wasn't supposed to do this. Lary Lou Retton, and Dominique Moceanu are some of the people who complained about him. “A lot of those big bear hugs came with the whisper of `Not so good,’ in our ears,” Retton wrote. “His harsh words and critical demeanor often weighed heavily on me,” Moceanu said. “While our relationship was fraught with difficulty, some of these moments of hardship helped me forge and define my own path.” There's so many things that come across as red flags with this guy that should have led to a more thorough investigation of him. He also made fun of the gymnasts' names, their weight and various other things that hurt their feelings. USA Gymnastics eventually ended their contract with using Karolyi's ranch as a training area after Simon Biles called them out on making the gymnasts train back in the place where many of them had been sexually assaulted.

I repeatedly read comments lamenting the pivot away from old-school women's gymnastics which primarily focused on grace. I believe some of this is nostalgia and style preference, but I desire to highlight the dark side of what you're idealizing. You're yearning for a time when a gymnast who weighs more than 90 lbs is potentially seen as fat by her teammates and coaches. As a resort, many gymnasts were placed on extreme diets. You're yearning for a time when all late adolescent female gymnasts looked like sixth graders, and you're yearning for a time when an 18-year-old female gymnast is called "old", and even if she was still capable of performing on an elite level, she risked being forced out of the sport (Yes, I know there is a 45 y/o elite female gymnast in Europe, but she's the exception to the rule). Today's gymnastics rewards power. Therefore, female gymnasts can develop more muscle mass. This means their bodies can mature! They don't have to starve themselves, or use other unhealthy tactics, to look more 'graceful' and/or stay in the sport, and they can compete well beyond 18 (if it's her choice and within her ability). It's okay to have a reverence for the past, but no longer mourn something that was toxic, unhealthy, and potentially soul-crushing as old-school women's gymnastics. Let me also mention that a majority of the skills many of you like to highlight as the reason why a gymnast in the past is better than a current athlete is also severely flawed. Many of those older skills you use as examples were banned after gymnasts were paralyzed or worse. You can research banned gymnastics skills to gain more insight on this issue. A good place to start is researching what happened to Elena Mukhina.

To this day, when people so me about my favorite sports memory, I often share her story and each time my eyes fill with tears of respect and honor. What she accomplished was one of the most heroic things I've ever seen an athlete do!

As usual Romanians paying the judges off or something. I mean what was that on beam? Numerous huge balance checks, and bad landing. But still arrives in 1st place. 🤣 Yeah ok.😂 This has been going on for decades with Romanians. And don’t ask to see their real ages. I have serious doubts whether they are of the required age.

lol at the scoring. Someone that has a terrible landing gets 10 from four judges and no deductions. Glad they changed this scoring system. It was clearly rigged. And often the same judges doing it.

Did I hear that right? ... "Marching as to war..."?? I am not sure, wether us-american journalists would talk like that if they or their parents and grandparents had lost everything and their land being devastated in a war in the near past. I visited the midwest of the US only months after the 96 Olympics for the first time in my life - and for the last time. The society I experienced there - rascist, white pride, colonial, militarist, violent, obsessed with itsself and a self-declared greatness and ignorant towards the suffering of others - was such a shock that I never felt the desire to go there again. This nations needs an earthquake to pave the way for change for the better.

Shush, Bogy, Strazh, Popa, Dobre, Vodnicharova, Dudeva, Potaeac, Cuiting...such amazing greatness here! If only Omelianchik and Mostepanova had been there, too!

I know this was a "ra-ra" moment for the US... But I have always felt awful for Svetlana here. That was an absolute stunner of a beam routine...and no one in that arena was watching. I love this video, the excitement it created; a revitalized sport in the US. The other gymnasts who competed with them had the hardest luck ever. While still amazing, between the other gymnasts being ignored and the behind the scenes of this era being the height of the USAG abuse scandal, leaves me feeling sickened at the "adults" but still greatly admiring **ALL** of the gymnasts who competed.
