The lap of the mitre corner and vertical offset cleat is initially confusing, but you guys did a great job of explaining. Thank you for the detailed video. It provides good narrative when comparing to the detail drawings

Surely there's a better way than having those exposed fasteners?

Could probably install some cleats on the underside just for the bottom portion but domt think theres much other way of holding the end cap on unless you take a welder to it

How long does that butyl tape keep a good seal?

    • @TheMetalRoofingChannel

Hello! How long it will keep a good seal depends entirely upon the installation. Butyl tape works by compression and should be fastened in between two pieces of metal no more than 4” O.C. because a fastener will compress the butyl tape 2” in each direction. Other factors include making sure the attachment area is clean and free from dirt and debris and the proper size based on the application. The main problem that we see is people don’t install the fasteners close enough to get the proper compression or they install butyl tape that is not the right size for the project. Then dirt and debris can coat the non-compressed butyl tape making it ineffective. Hope this helps! -Thad

I am not aware of manufacturer data that gives a hard time frame other than the lifespan will be significantly reduced if installed improperly, as I stated above. I think the key is that the butyl tape is used as a secondary defense only and shouldn't be relied on as a primary means of protection. If you have concerns about using butyl in an install, let me know or you can speak directly with the Sheffield Metals technical department who may have more information. www.sheffieldmetals.com/Resources/Technical-Department -Thad
