    What do you guys think about USB-C ? It is becoming more and more of a standard. But I can only imagine why we don't see it in gaming laptops 🤔

    • @Jside68
      @Jside68 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It has to become a standard for lower power Laptop. I refuse to purchase or recommend a laptop that doesn't charge via USB C in 2023. The issue is that most cheap sub $600 laptop are still mostly charging via proprietary charger.

      It is a nice idea, but the mechanics are too fragile, especially for laptops.

    • @smashman9835
      @smashman9835 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They should have decided on a common port for laptops. Two pole, power only. Usb-c are fundamentally problematic, particularly for higher voltages where shorting across pins can cause more damage. I currently have 3 yoga 910s, all with dead usb-c boards which seem to be impossible to find replacements for.

    4:33 that ! Why the heck would they leave 2 mm gap when the USB connector is in ? It wiggles all over the place when it is connected, it will damage eider from that OR that you forced it too much in because it has that visible gap.
    It bothers me a lot. I just got a new X13.

  • @dominictarrsailing
    @dominictarrsailing ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I don't buy it that it's a circuit problem. If that was true it would work then suddenly not work. Instead it slowly gets more difficult to connect. Needs a wiggle or to sit just right. Eventually degrades to not work at all. Clearly a problem with physical electrical contact

    Everyone, my both type C ports stoped working, charging one and the one beside it. All you have to do is, take the sim ejector tool and press the reset button which is on the bottom. some one said to press it 3 times, so I pressed it three times. mine was in the center. its a tiny hole, like the sim hole. and then turn it on, and the ports will work again. You should have some power in battery for this to work I guess. Don't take it to the technician.

    My wife works as a insurance account manager and uses Lenovo and she told me her laptop only had one usb c port. This is used at her work with a docking station and it just stopped working. Registers connection but then doesn’t have any power to the device.

    Maybe they should make it a standard to have a "power only" USB-C connector on the laptop, so that it just has 4-5 stronger power pins instead of 24 thin pins that also support data. Much easier to repair o the motherboard too, but I doubt any manufacturer thinks about ease of repair 🤦‍♂

    Why is my Lenovo laptop charges only when I use the original charger but doesnt work with any other usb-c charger with PD?

    • @lapfix
      @lapfix  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check the Wattage on the charging brick. If you are using an adapter meant for a phone, it won't have enough wattage to charge the battery...usually

    • @Sparky112
      @Sparky112 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lapfix let me explain it again. I'd like to use my Toocki 67W Power Delivery charger (original Lenovo charger is 65W). When I connect it, Windows says it's connected but not charging. I tried with the cable which has a power meter. T14 takes about 10W then and the icon PD on the display of meter doesnt showup - seems that notebook doesnt activate the PD protocol and is supplied from 5V voltage only. The problem does not occure with the original charger. Output voltages of both chargers are the same: 5, 9, 15, 20 V (and 12V on Toocki).

    • @andytomalin3511
      @andytomalin3511 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Sparky112 I agree. This is a familiar problem to me. I have two 60WPD powerbanks, 3 60WPD aftermarket chargers and a 100WPD DeWalt system. I have 3 working Lenovos including a 920 and a 2023 X1Gen7. There are circumstances when only a directly-connected genuine Lenovo charger will do, even from the wrong model (e.g. the oldest Lenovo has a yellow square proprietary power system, but can only be charged by a genuine Lenovo usb C PD adapter from the later models when the battery is criitical even though the power demand is easily furnished by the 3rd party PDs), there are circumstances on the Gen7 when ONLY the usb-C port with the power icon on will do, and there are circumstances when even the port with the power icon won't charge from any 3rd party PD hub (yes I've got 4 of them too). It's not about the power demand as I can see that on my PD power meter, it is surely about the negotiation between the USB-C componenets. The 920 is the most reliable probably because it isn't too control freaky. Sometimes with a 3rd party power source I get a message on the X1 warning that my PD isn't providing enough power to properly charge the machine and recommending I plug in the original psu. Doing this does not increase the rate of charge. Hmm. To be frank PD is wonderful (apart from the USB-C plug/socket mechanical fragility) but every corporate struggles with engineering open systems whilst arguing with its marketeers about maintaining competitive advantage, and this family of problems has this kind of whiff about it. I don't mind the warning message if it protects me from unwittingly stepping outside the corporate umbrella or warns me I'm on my own, but the messages need to be honest and accurate and not prevent me from doing reasonable things with trusted and well-behaved 3rd party components, and above all not lead to incomprehensible situations where things refuse to work for no good reason other than the manufacturer trying to be too clever by half.

  • @stevey500
    @stevey500 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've got a Gen 9 X1 that stopped charging. At first, it would only take 5v, it would only charge at 11-12w sometimes. Both ports behaved the same.
    I attempted a solder reflow of the two grey mosfet chips (CSD87501L) that it seems lenovo has epoxy glued to the board. This did not resolve. I have a few of them on the way, I will try replacing them. With my thermal camera out, it seems the two very small black rectangular IC's that are nearest both USB C ports get quite hot. I cannot hold my finger on them while 5v usb power is being received. Whatever these two IC's are, they seem to be internally shorting or maybe they are a self-resetting fuse. The only recognizable characters are KP and MF8E or MFBE of these two identical IC components.

    • @wolfejohn1
      @wolfejohn1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We've gone through about 40% of our fleet of Gen 9's with it. The chip will either burn itself up (Literally black on it) or the chip will fall off.
      Lenovo doesn't even question when we put in a warranty replacement for the motherboard anymore, and the new ones that come in, have a blue dot on each chip now (Common verification tool used for verifying a part)

      Not for this issue (and most USB-C charging issues). USB-C isn't just power pass through, it also has a data line. There is a circuit behind it as it is not your typical "dc jack".
