  • The best golf drivers with Mark Crossfield and James Robinson. The best golf drivers over the years and the best golf drivers of all time along with maybe the worst golf driver of all time. Mark Crossfield and James Robinson take on these golf drivers over the years from Callaway, Ping, Taylormade Nike and Titleist golf to see how golf drivers have changed and if the golf clubs are actually getting any longer. If you want longer golf drives and need to know what golf driver is the best for your golf game or the best from 2019 and many other years maybe this golf video can help you. Let us know in the comments below what driver you play and if you are still using any of these drivers featured in this golf equipment test.

The best driver I've ever played to date was the 2014 Big Bertha. I hit my longest drive with it and it was in the middle of the fairway on a par 5 (270) Chunked the 4H approach. Chunked the 8 iron approach. Skulled the pitch shot over the green. Chipped on and two putted for double bogey. *sigh*

For your stats, PGA tour average drive wasnt 317 in 2019, the average of the longest hitter on tour was 317. The average of the top 188 on Tour in 2019 is 295 yards. In 2006 tour average was 289, cant find 2004 numbers.
Longest ever tour average was Hank Kuehne as far as I can see, with 321 yards, in the early 2000s

I have been playing the Callaway XR driver for the past 4 years. Whenever a new driver has come out over the past 3 years, I take my XR to the store and hit it against the newest one with usually the same shaft. Invariably there is little if any difference in carry yardage. I do believe that the sweet spots have grown a bit in the newer drivers, so miss hits are not as punishing.

Been hitting a 2012 Ping Anser for years. Just can't beat the look or the feel. Did have an Aldila Proto 60 Stiff in it but put Hzrdus Smoke 5.5 in it last year. My feeling is the shaft is the most important aspect of newer drivers and at 66 years old I needed to back off just a tad. Seemed to work, I'm getting about 235-240 out of it. My playing partners are all in there early 50s and can't hit any of their newer model drivers past my Anser.

I currently use a Callaway Big Bertha 816 Alpha DBD which works very well. It has a center of gravity nearer the face which I always hit better than the back weighted drivers. Apparently that is because is swings more like an iron with the forward cog.

I dont change drivers much. I started out with a Srixon W-506, moved to the Cobra F speed (because I liked there DWS hybrids and that was the matching driver). Played the Cobra for a long time, then I wanted an adjustable club so I moved into a Cleveland Custom 588 (It is a very forgiving club). I just changed to a Taylormade R15 (14 degree) I got it from a friend. Trying a tip I got from Mr Crossfield about lofting up if your swing speed is 100mph. I must say that works, it's more accurate and I haven't lost any distance. I do deliver the driver slightly down so more loft is good.

Earlier this year I just switched from a 2005 Adams 430Q to a Callaway 816 Alpha DBD Driver with the same shaft. I had trouble drawing the Adams even with the weight in the heel. It was fade biased. The Callaway is easier to hit straight and therefore to control. The Callaway is a little bit longer, but that could be because of the superior control.

The PGA averages quoted were for the longest driver of the ball. In 2004 Hank Kuehne averaged 314.4 in 2003 he averaged 321.4. In 2004 the tour average was 287 as opposed to 2018 where the average was 295 and Trey Mullinax topped out at 318. Very interest vid, really shows you that the tec doesn’t have much impact but fitness and swing speeds have generally improved. I am using a 2017 TM M1 and the desire to upgrade is very strong young Jedi!

It gives the people some information to decide for themselves.

The yardage differences will probably be less thn most people would expect, although it depends on which models are tested and the shafts should all be the same length to reduce variables. That might mess up the swingweights though. I bought a near new Callaway Big Bertha 816 Alpha DBD driver in 2019. I like it a lot. I had a 2005 Adams Redline 430Q before that. I hit them the same distance (with the same shaft which I moved to the Callaway - a Penley Graphite Lite XX-flex), but the Callaway is more accurate because it doesn't have a fade bias like the Adams does.

I changed this week! From G400SFT to Epic Flash. Had my first game with it today. Too much hard work with the Ping Tour 65g S shaft after swapping out the Alta CB 55g S.
My favourite previous driver was the 915D2 having had the 913 and 917 either side of it

SLDR. Currently play the Rogue Sub Zero and played the 2016 M2 before that but last few rounds I put my old SLDR in the bag and wondered why got the other two in the first place.

In 2019, I "upgraded" to a Taylormade R9 in 9° loft (from a Callaway Great Big Bertha in 10.5°). Got it second-hand (actually found it in a thrift store for about $12). I've adjusted it for my draw-biased swing, and just replaced the grip this winter. I'm generally pretty pleased with it. I don't hit it as well as I did when I got it (a few years of intermittent tendonitis and minor back issues will do that to you), but I still get pretty reliable results from it when I remember all the swing adjustments I've made to compensate for my physical issues. I still hit it farther than I ever hit the Callaway, which is a large part of why I haven't replaced it (although I'm thinking about going to the 2016 model of the Taylormade M2...but I'm not there yet.)

I recently picked up a Honma 737 455 and was a little worried it might be shorter being a couple if years older, but it isn't and it looks like you've proved distance over the last 10 years hasn't really changed. Glad I didn't spend a fortune for the newest version!!

My first set of irons were some beat up Petron impala’s, my dad bought me them from a boot sale! Never even knew they were a known brand until you just mentioned your first driver!

Haven’t really seen a huge change in distance from all the drivers I have gamed, but improvements in Changeability have shown more consistency in distance. Don’t loose as much with the miss hits as I did years ago. My r11 quad was still the longest distance driver I ever played, but when it went wrong boy did it go wrong. I don’t see that as much with my current m3 and I was playing more golf and striking the ball much better back then. Love the videos lads.

Mine is a TITLIEST 983K love your channel and have fell back in love with golf thanks to all your guys new content and some other inspiration. Keep up the good work . Id also like to see some history lessons of golf as in names of great players stories of old players that dont get the recanition that they should!

Bought a Taylor Made SLDR when it came out a few years back now, based on Mark's recommendation, and still loving it. Even if I could get a few more yards with a newer driver it's not something I would consider since I have a lot of confidence with the SLDR.

Interesting stuff. 👏 what happens if you compare results starting from club head speed? Then look at ball speed, carry/total distance, spin, launch etc. That would mean you see which club converts the club speed best and gets better launch and distance?🤔👍

Think I may go for the Taylormade M2 in the coming year. I've been looking to upgrade and seeing that it's certainly better than my VRS from 2012 but is still pretty much cutting edge compared to the 2018/2019 models seems like a solid value. I definitely felt like 2005-2011 was a big jump in tech, followed by 2012-2016, and now the current era where it will be very hard to make changes to golf tech in regards to the legal limits allowed by the governing bodies of golf.

My first was the original Big Bertha back in the 90's and now I game the Callaway XR 16. Don't care a lot about distance just want a hit fairway....but still hit it 260-270.

Great video again, good to see you and James doing some interesting stuff together. Gotta love how James really nailed the first few drives, full power, using the ground to "jump" through the shot, whereas Mark plays his standard pat ball and only ends up 4 yards behind. Delivery is everything :)

two main reasons for distance drop in 2013:
-Taylormade staffers played the R1 (arguably the worst driver they ever made)
-nike ball had significant distance drop and driver underperformed

Ok you said stop and no looking ahead. So I'm guessing they'll be within 5-10 yards of each other. Thanks for the video! I'll assume it will be really good! Been hitting a Ping G 30 for 3-4 years now. And that thing does sound like a gun going off! That's my only complaint about the club. Now pressing play........😃
Finished the video and yes it was really good! Thanks so much!

R9 Supertri fitted in 2009 about to be replaced with Ping G410 fitted 2019! Best of the best 5 maybe 10 yards. Average of the misses improved more forgiving and getting there easier probably with slightly less club-head speed.

I replaced my generic box set driver with a 2014 great big bertha and gained an EASY 30 yards, and it feels amazing in terms of quality. Picked it up for 30$us on ebay. 9.5-10 condition!!
