I play whatever balls I find. Sunday I found 13 balls in the thick rough and at the edge of the pond.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

I went to our local PGA store and tried 5 different setups - he gave me all options of the clubs in store with the setup he built for me. They ranged from $650 for a set of irons to $2k and let me decide. This particular gentleman was great at his job. I high pressured myself into the more expensive irons as they are going to be a 20 year set for me

I caddied years ago, we were ALWAYS taught to set the clubs as you said, woods at the top, short irons progressively at the bottom. This helps not only to protect the clubs themselves, you are not constantly searching for a club as well as knowing instantly if you are missing one.

The only problem is if you go from trolly to cart you have to rearrange it. If it’s set up the way he says and you put it on a cart the short clubs will be behind the tall clubs.

If you play on a course with a lot of trees, long irons are critical. I play a Mizuno Fli-Hi 2 iron. 200 metres without getting up in the branches is worth plenty of shots a round. Hybrids are also more prone to hooking. Long utility irons have much of the benefit of hybrid forgiveness with more shot control.

I am lucky. I did club fitting and club repairs for years. I put my own equipment together to suit me. What did I learn for all those years? Most people have no clue why they have this or that set of clubs and no clue if their clubs suit their capabilities. In my youth, late teens and early 20s I could hit the ball well, long, and straight, mostly and had a 6 handicap. My Dad taught me club making. I did attend a club builder's course. I just wanted to know more. 28yrs in the Army, infantry, a family, deployments, the golf went on hold. I'm 65 now, retired, completely, and fairly beat up physically. Three lower back surgeries will reduce your game in a way you cannot imagine. My sticks now? 13 degree 3W (as a driver), 5W, 7W, 9W, Ping Zing 2 irons, 6-PW, wide soled 52, 56, and 60 degree wedges. Senior shafts in everything except the lower three wedges, which are R- flex, and everything is graphite shafted. Yes, game improvement clubs are essential. Last year, I got my handicap to 12 and I can live with that. My rule #1? Hit it in the short grass, no matter which club you must use to get it there. Rule #2? Practice chipping and putting a LOT. Rule #3? No hero shots. If in trouble get it to the short grass. I have tried to simplify the game. Loved your analysis in this video. Spot on.

Agreed on the set up of clubs in the bag, that just made sense to me when I started playing to put the longer clubs at the top. I have a 4 hybrid but am comfortable with the other irons. I agree on the balls but I’ve only started this recently as like a lot of amateurs I have a tendency to lose balls. I’ve gone round the last few rounds though with 1 ball so starting to buy one brand at a time to see how they perform for me

  • @PNW_Sportbike_Life

I’ve gone the opposite. I play a 4-u (i230s) and totally ditched the hybrids. Today I picked up an iCrossover 2i, and dialed the g430 5w down to 4w loft. I am a 17.9 currently. Irons for me are more reliable, as I tend to hook hybrids. My driver ball speed is right around 148; I’m 50 years old.

I play 20+ year old Titleist blades 2-PW. I hardly consider using these clubs as anything to do with ego because I learned with blades 30 years ago and have been hitting with these for almost 20. Great video. Agree on the crazy expensive shafts. The stock shaft selection is usually good enough for the amateur to find one that will deliver good strikes. Shafts are so player dependent that we need to find the shaft that minimizes our bad strikes, no shaft will correct a bad swing. All these shafts are tested on robots...enough said. Have never been able to hit a hybrid, but the 7 wood has been great.

Need to go to golfbox and try different brands, I was terrible with hybrids until I tried a callaway B21 the head is bigger and is offset so looks slightly closed at address. Playing one of these was night and day for me, anything that looks open at address, 100% it's all a mental thing but it does not inspire any confidence and I end up pushing it right or slicing it. So it's worth trying a few brands I've moved onto the wilson hybrids the heads a little smaller still has that offset slightly closed at address and I have 3 in the bag 22° 25° 28°.

One thing I've learned is to keep the carrybag as light as possible, it makes a big difference for my game during the last holes if I carry my ultralight bag with 9-10 clubs, just enough balls and 33cl waterbottle, compared to carrying my full size carry bag with 14 clubs, big water bottle, 12 extra balls and other stuff from previous rounds. My full carry bag makes me exhausted during the last four five holes and it affects my precision and concentration making me do silly unessesary mistakes. Keep your carrybag light, play better golf despite leaving out your longer clubs at home. It's kind of a sport in itself deciding which clubs, and how many, you're going to put in the ultralight bag. :)

@@method341 I have a Big Max trolley for my full 14 clubs bag, but my back hurts after pushing it up and down a full length course, which affects my swing. I prefer to use my ultra light carry bag with 8-9 clubs, it helps with my posture while walking, and it is much easier to lift in and out of my car. Don't want an electric trolley, and I prefer walking for exercise, instead of driving a buggy.

In the winter I play any old gash YELLOW ball it really doesn’t matter IMO (yellow means you can find them so much easier when mud splattered) maybe I need to try and play just one ball type in summer as you suggest. Food and drink always (at least 1 litre of water in those summer heat waves)….what about glove types and condition?

I play 2 hybrids instead of long irons unless I'm playing links, because it makes scoring easier from long approaches/Par 3's. It boggles my mind when I see slow players using long irons. Play what you like for sure. I support that, but don't understand playing a club you physically can't. I see it multiple times every time I play. 4,5,6 irons that only get 20-30 feet off the ground and can't hold a green. Just don't understand it.

Low handicapper here and I already do all your suggestions. But I will point out a lot of players put their clubs in the bag opposite your suggestion because it makes them easier to access when riding in a cart.

Sorted. Around the time this video was released, although I wasn't part of the Lockey army yet back then. Started using just one ball type after I got fitted for new irons last July (the big reset of my golf journey) around 70 compression fits my swing well. started on the AD333, but then Urethane skin feels just a bit nicer with putting: enter the TM Tour Response. Shortly after I got a second hand hybrid 5 - but not for the 'proper' reason but because a frozen shoulder prevented be from getting enough distance on the old 5 iron. I'm glad I did though, because it's a wonderful thing, much more forgiving, so the end result is the same. Got stock shafts too. No drink is still the odd mistake occasionally (but no issue either on 9 winter holes) but food-wise I'm totally bananas too. On the bonus tip: I have the Ogio silencer to immobilize my clubs.

    Coach,great advice.
My advice is to never spend a dime on any club fittings before you learn how to swing a club.
Also, never buy expensive gb unless you have a game.
Golf bags, if for some reason you intend on working out during a round of golf and stressing your shoulders out.Never purchase a carrie bag, unless you want to play a par 3 coarse. A cart bag will be better for organization and have a place for your putter.
Don't be convinced you'll be able to walk and carry all that wait and maintain a solid round of golf. There's a reason for caddies.
    Good luck everyone!

i hear you there... buy used balls then you can play cheap balls, but consistent balls. when you go on a trip or something and want to break out the 60$ dozen go for it, but otherwise play a used ball

I use Calloway Revas in bright pink to go with my Calloway Reva clubs! I do only use one ball per session because I don’t lose mine. In my one year of playing I have lost one ball! The main reason is that I don’t hit that far but hit fairly accurately, Im sure this is due to the lessons Ive had weekly from day one.

I liked having my clubs the way you hate them because it’s easier to access the smaller clubs. I also keep head covers on my clubs so they don’t get messed up by the other clubs clinking around. Look how shoddy those apex’s look. :)

    Great video.
Balls matter. I tried soft balls and the spin dropped by as much as half, something I don’t want when playing strong lofted clubs.
Aftermarket shafts… just watch TH-cam comparisons: the differences are more often than not negligible, and far less important than the right shaft (moving from light graphite shafts in my irons to 105 steel shafts cut about 4-5 off my handicap (9).
    Hybrids… I play 3: a 2 (lofted down to almost 1, as a ‘driving iron’/3-ish wood), a 4 & 5, with 6-PW, 50 & 60, driver & putter, so 12 clubs. What else do I need?

Wish I could follow some of these tips. However in SA the club prices are so high I can simply not afford to change and get fit. Thus, I am stuck with a 15 year old set that does not have the right stiffness of shaft etc for my game

Guilty of the 1st one, to a point, I won't put any ball I find in my bag, but a pro v1/x I will.
The 2nd point I do not like hybrids, bought 1 which I was fitted for, it lasted a few rounds but get better results from my 3 or 4 iron. That said, I have replaced the 3i with a 7 wood as it is more forgiving and also carries the same sort of distance as the 3i.
Totally agree with point 3, my irons are mp30's still love them'

This video would help more golfers if they would just listen. More than any video on TH-cam. I just got a 6,5,4 hybrid (took the ego out of my bag) and play the same brand and model golf ball every time. My game took a huge leap. I would add one more. Ditch the 3 wood and get a 5 wood. The same players that could benefit from hybrids should be playing a 5 wood instead of a 3 wood. I even replaced my blade wedges with cavity back wedges. Huge improvement.

In a friendly game with my mates, I use a rubbish ball off the tee and a Pro V 1 for the approach shots and around the greens. This way I don’t waste to many quality balls. This does not apply to a comp.

    1. Guilty of using a variety of premium balls from different brands. Too curious for my own good when it comes to ball performance, so I buy 5-10 dozen at a time and spend the season with that ball (provided that they LAST the entire season).
    2. Got rid of long irons AND hybrids. Never warmed up to the "wood-like" hybrids of recent years, so just goiung back to high-lofted fairway woods.
    3. I certainly HAVE been accused of confusing golf with shopping.
    4. Plenty of granola and bars and graham crackers in the bag... for the squirrels! They come running when I'm on the course!
    5. The ONLY way to put clubs in a stand bag is short clubs at the bottom. But when the stand bag is on a motor cart, the positions have to be reversed so the short clubs are closer to you when the bag is mounted and strapped in.
