Yea, growing up I wanted to be mysterious and cool but it made me more sad, growing into my character and ending up like Pandora was awesome for my mental health
Yeah. I had an incredibly conventionally attractive, model - beautiful friend that was mysterious and reminded me a lot of Effy. Everyone had a crush on her. She was a DJ, very talented and charming in a mysterious way. I always envied and glorified her for being able to be so calm, seemingly cold and collected, never complaining about personal problems, captivating everyone’s attention, etc., but down the line she developed extreme addiction issues and I realised the wasn’t „calm and collected“ at all, she was just suppressing her emotions to a point that made her very sick. I‘m sorry for envying her and not realising she needed help.
i loved this especially the ending!!! people tend to say effy is overrated bc they only see her as a mysterious & manipulative party girl but she's so much more than that & you covered it so well thank you!!!
speaking as a fan of this channel, loving all the content, being sincere, I feel that effie thing only works to be stylish because of her appearance. This style just looks good because her face and the storyline/interpretation. Dont get me wrong! I recognize that there is this chic gothic style like jenny in gossip girl or even avril lavigne girlfriend era. I can’t see a “ordinary” girl wearing this effie style and dont looking unpolished and cheap.
Looking like her physically definitely would help but in the end I think it comes down to attitude. If you don't own your look it just won't work. She could even possibly look cheap if her personality didn't match.
True but that's why it fits her character so well, I feel like it really accentuates the fact that Effy can do whatever she wants just because she's beautiful and everyone is inexplicably in love with her no matter what she does or what she looks like. She doesn't have to care about looking polished etc, she's already beautiful and people already love her. She could be wearing a garbage bag and guys would still lose their minds over her lol
Definitely, the writing and actress brought Effy to life. No one else could have executed the character like Kaya Scodelario. The fashion was an extension of the character that complimented the actress well to create the look associated with Effy.
Her wearing a sid and nancy tshirt could also mean something. Maybe to indicate that her relationship with freddie isn't going to end well/work out in a subtle way.
I think she doesn’t speak a lot as she feels no one listens anyway, thus she thrives in her appearance of “bad girl”. How could she care when no one else does. Or at least she feels. Shes stoic bc at home, her pain is never the spotlight. No one seems to pay attention at home except Tony, and even then, it’s like an alliance of “we’re both coping and fucked, I understand and have your back.”
Agree but also see it as a control/punishment mechanism for her. The only power she feels that she has is to withhold her voice especially with characters older than her at the time. A lot of the characters in Skins could be seen as reactions to feeling lack of control: Tony manipulates and is self-centred. Cassie controls her eating and weight. Jal works hard in hopes of achieving success. Chris tries to escape/ forget it through partying. Sid bumbles around. Michelle rebels against her mum and horrid stepdad and tries to keep up appearances. It’s not the only way to look at the characters and there’s probably many that don’t fit but it’s something I always think about.
10:32 Also, the graphic on the tee is a picture of Sick & Nancy, the embodiment of toxic relationship. It was interesting to me, as a teenager, watching this references that were so obvious.
I love combining both masculine items and feminine items into one outfit. Even one item can be both feminine and masculine at the same time. I miss dressing more messy like I usually do, but it also feels nice to be put together
skins is an amazing show but the scenes (especially in the first season) where they practically taught viewers how to make it seem as if you’ve eaten untouched food or how to smoke really rubbed me the wrong way
Same, but I think I was always like this, and I just felt seen by her character, and how the writers romanticized the struggles that I didn’t even realize other people experienced.
i love this analysis, effy is an amazing but very misunderstood character, i love how you don't try and simplify her like so many people do, also im so glad someone else notice how expressive her wardrobe design was, from her double life, to her using her sex appeal, to when she started to get better and stop caring so much about her facade it's always complementing her story so well
I watched the first few seasons multiple times as a teen but never watched the adult effy season, so excited to just rewatch everything now that I’m an “adult” and can also watch the adult season 😍
Well it s not a season, they made only 3 episodes 1 for Effy (I didn’t like the Naomi storyline and the absence of Tony) 1 for Cassie (she is really different though) and 1 episode for Cook (I didn’t watch it) Every episode is split in 2 parts You can watch it on TH-cam
So many people in the comments are hating on the character because she wasn't a role model when the show never intended her to be one. She was supposed to be a mess and unlikable. Not every character in a show, book, movie, or any piece of media is created to be loved or looked up to. Sometimes they're a cautionary tale, a mirror that shows us the flaws within ourselves that we need to work on or a road that we should never take.
Minus the partying, drugs and sex, I surprisingly relate a lot to her, right down to the bpd, self harm, psychotic depression. People generally only value me as some kind of fantasy but I’ve never had a real boyfriend, hardly any real friends, and I’ve only tried to pretty myself up more and more hoping people would love me more but nobody does beyond the surface
effy reminds me of an aspect of myself in a way but i was never like her.. effy was probably idealized and sexualized as a child. she just learned how to “empower” herself by embodying what everyone already thinks of her. it’s a defense.. but you realize it isn’t actually empowering. instead of feeling subjugated by others u subjugate yourself.. pls do cassie. i always loved her style. i love thé 20/30s élément in both their styles!
just wanted to say that is is the first video i've watched that has kept my FULL attention the whole time without looking at my phone in a LONG time. so interesting and well-made
@@carolinexoxo1403 I think what she means by that, there is a thing where girls (I want assume young girls in middle school or high school who does this) try to seem like they’re the prettiest girl in the classroom. They may go through lengths of seeming mysterious to attract attention. I remember this happening in my time when I was in middle school. It was cringey 😬.
Especially the parts of the show where people (boys and girls) would meet Effy and her friend (the girl from season 1 or Panda) and people would ALWAYS ignore the friend like they don’t exist, people would even laugh at them sometimes including Effy herself. It kinda puts this idea in your head that you are way less valuable and less interesting if you aren’t as pretty as the girl next to you

It's not that I ever idolised Effy but that she was already so much like me in looks, style and temperament that it shook me. People around me noticed. She's relatable. I think there's a bit of that Effy magic in all of us.
Watching this made me wanna re-watch the whole series. That scene when Effy and Freddy are laying on the grass at the park. It breaks my heart every time. So beautiful. Or when Freddy sees her with Cook for the first time. Oooffff
TBH i think that effy could have been a revolutionaire portail of autism. That put a way that a highly intelligent person could cope with her different working brain. How her hypersensetifity causes her to keep distant and afraid of the intense emotions that comes with taking a leap of faith into people. How her intellegence makes her able to see and understand things that are unnoticable for others and makes her able to calculate how to portrait herself and what to say. The constant unexplained feeling of being on their own and lost. Idk i just saw more in effy than in JJ
i saw that too (also reflects how it's just not considered in the same way for women as men. JJ is much much more overt about it, which makes him more classic for the diagnosticians).
This was an amazing breakdown on the person that was, to me, the most relatable human in my adolescence. In watching your video I also understood a lot about myself. So thank you ❤️

I've watched this video 5 times, I do not know why everything is so soothing : the voice, the content, the music & the images. I completely forgot about Skins until I somehow stumbled upon this video, this show was really something else ! Anyway this video is amazing:))
Your content is amazing and unique! Would you consider doing an analysis on "Confessions of a Shopaholic"? I think it's such an underrated movie - there's lots of passion for fashion in Rebecca's character. Keep up the good work xx
She was working in the City/ Square mile or Canary wharf. The people that work there are RICH RICH and as a result even junior staff get paid way more than the average London salary let alone UK due to the nature of businesses that are there. So for me it's kinda believable. Esp if she was working in a boutique firm.
It's pretty believable, she works for a leading hedge fund company. Also, around this time is when a lot of those rent designer companies really started coming into the spotlight.

i loved this especially the ending!!! people tend to say effy is overrated bc they only see her as a mysterious & manipulative party girl but she's so much more than that & you covered it so well thank you!!!
speaking as a fan of this channel, loving all the content, being sincere, I feel that effie thing only works to be stylish because of her appearance.
I agree, it looks good on her because she's thin and very pretty
Looking like her physically definitely would help but in the end I think it comes down to attitude. If you don't own your look it just won't work. She could even possibly look cheap if her personality didn't match.
You're right. It's not an accessible style at all, in that sense.
ikr her figure really fits it, also idk why but i feel like her dark hair, pale skin, and icy blue eyes really help fit the style too..
I don't think Effy's style was what made her so amazing, it was the way the writers wrote the character and the actress's beauty
Definitely, the writing and actress brought Effy to life. No one else could have executed the character like Kaya Scodelario. The fashion was an extension of the character that complimented the actress well to create the look associated with Effy.
Definitely! But this video focuses on her style.
The style analysis of Noora from Skam would be interesting. I absolutely love her sense of style.
i cant look at her without being overwhelmed with infatuation lol
yeaah it look so effortless yet fashionable
Yessss i love her style
yessss
yesss plissss
Her wearing a sid and nancy tshirt could also mean something. Maybe to indicate that her relationship with freddie isn't going to end well/work out in a subtle way.
Jup! I thought the same!
At which timestamp is she wearing that?
I think it's also to show that she romanticized things that are toxic.
actors are a crazy breed they turn into these characters so well, i don’t even know how to be myself lmao.
It’s not the only way to look at the characters and there’s probably many that don’t fit but it’s something I always think about.
omg this is such a good analysis. like everyone does these things to take some control over their lives
@@anjalifigueiredo1736 belated thank you 😊
The visuals, editing style, your calm voice, and psych analysis are always extraordinarily mesmerizing! I’m always in awe while watching your videos!
You really hit the nail on the head with the analysis of her character and psychology. I feel like she has so much depth it’s hard to understand her
10:32 Also, the graphic on the tee is a picture of Sick & Nancy, the embodiment of toxic relationship. It was interesting to me, as a teenager, watching this references that were so obvious.
Indirect references and Easter eggs make this show such a great work of film!
OMG! I was literally just binge re-watching Skins and SKAM.
same
skam omg yes
where can you can watch skins now? its no longer on netflix
@@lunaesmsp8934 it's available on TH-cam

"Effy is a genuine and caring person."
Effy: Why bother... caring about people?
"You don't fool me" said Tony
@@justinekmy6023 - So textbook disingenuousness?
@@jpaxonreyes Yes, but no. She cares, but doesn't want people to know. Vulnerability is a weakness to Effy.
@@Aster_Risk - But I was talking about Effy's sincerity. She's not "genuine" if she hides her consideration for others.
@@jpaxonreyes Well none of what Effy is is genuine. She’s always performing
Kaya Scodelario is so gorgeous😍😭
Great video!!
That awkward moment when you grew up as a combination of Effy and Cassy but you didn’t mean to and it probably means you needed a lot of therapy 😂
I feel attacked😂🙃
I feel like I progressed from cassie in my teens to effy in my twenties... messed up either way.
i swear to god when i was 14 in 2009 EVERY girl wanted to be effy and thats terrifying
I love combining both masculine items and feminine items into one outfit. Even one item can be both feminine and masculine at the same time. I miss dressing more messy like I usually do, but it also feels nice to be put together
skins is an amazing show but the scenes (especially in the first season) where they practically taught viewers how to make it seem as if you’ve eaten untouched food or how to smoke really rubbed me the wrong way
i wanted to be her so bad but then i actually became her & now i hate it
same.
Same, but I think I was always like this, and I just felt seen by her character, and how the writers romanticized the struggles that I didn’t even realize other people experienced.
Mood
bad time but yo sinjin drowning viewer :0
@@ley6748 AYEEE🙌🏻
i love this analysis, effy is an amazing but very misunderstood character, i love how you don't try and simplify her like so many people do, also im so glad someone else notice how expressive her wardrobe design was, from her double life, to her using her sex appeal, to when she started to get better and stop caring so much about her facade it's always complementing her story so well
I am sure she had borderline personality disorder rather than just depression. But back then this illness was probably not well known.
I have bpd and I can relate with her in other aspects but I don’t think she has it. Cassie definitely has it
idk but she didnt just have depression, she had psychotic depression which may share some similarities with bpd
I have bpd and I think that she has too
I think repressed trauma can have similar symptoms to BPD.
The vocal fry kills me
you captured her so well thank you for understanding her character
Please make a Cassie style analysis too! I'm still obsessed with her shoes
Yes the gold ones omggg still deseperatly hunting for them
@@palissovski1829 same, that whole outfit is so iconic
I watched the first few seasons multiple times as a teen but never watched the adult effy season, so excited to just rewatch everything now that I’m an “adult” and can also watch the adult season 😍
Well it s not a season, they made only 3 episodes 1 for Effy (I didn’t like the Naomi storyline and the absence of Tony)
1 for Cassie (she is really different though) and 1 episode for Cook (I didn’t watch it)
Every episode is split in 2 parts
You can watch it on TH-cam
So many people in the comments are hating on the character because she wasn't a role model when the show never intended her to be one. She was supposed to be a mess and unlikable. Not every character in a show, book, movie, or any piece of media is created to be loved or looked up to. Sometimes they're a cautionary tale, a mirror that shows us the flaws within ourselves that we need to work on or a road that we should never take.
Well said
Minus the partying, drugs and sex, I surprisingly relate a lot to her, right down to the bpd, self harm, psychotic depression. People generally only value me as some kind of fantasy but I’ve never had a real boyfriend, hardly any real friends, and I’ve only tried to pretty myself up more and more hoping people would love me more but nobody does beyond the surface
God why is this so relatable and true
ouch
effy reminds me of an aspect of myself in a way but i was never like her.. effy was probably idealized and sexualized as a child. she just learned how to “empower” herself by embodying what everyone already thinks of her. it’s a defense.. but you realize it isn’t actually empowering. instead of feeling subjugated by others u subjugate yourself..
pls do cassie. i always loved her style. i love thé 20/30s élément in both their styles!
just wanted to say that is is the first video i've watched that has kept my FULL attention the whole time without looking at my phone in a LONG time. so interesting and well-made
omg u should do mini mcguinness- aka freya mavor's character. she has such a big background and definitely has a special style
omg yes! mini had so many interesting outfits :)
she was my favourite character from gen 3!
Yes mini is SO underrated!!
you know every show i loved growing up
Hands down this is the best character- & fashion analysis of Effy I have seen so far🙌🏽
Effy reminds me a lot of Agnes, a side character from Gossip Girl.. 🤔
I can def see it.
@kibblewibble I didn't really mean the acting, I meant the look and fashion style.. they look really similar
@kibblewibble I feel like iffy would have drugged someone in the earlier seasons
I wanted to be Effy so badly in high school (still kinda do)! Also, your voice is so soothing and the video was so well put-together!!
No wonder our generation is plagued with “Prettiest Girl in the Room Syndrome...”
wait can you explain this?
It kinda puts this idea in your head that you are way less valuable and less interesting if you aren’t as pretty as the girl next to you
I'm 25 and I think this still impacts woman, specially woman who are pretty and always have this need tk compete. It's sad, but for woman beauty is status and power
Please do skins as a series! Would love some coverage of other characters 🥰
I usually love this channel but I can't handle the vocal fry and the way you narrate your videos, especially in this one.
Me too!! I don't get why she drags each word out
Same 😢 I love the content but it's just too hard to listen too
I lover her voice tbh . It’s soft and calming ✨
i can’t watch unless i put the speed at 1.75x
Ik it stresses me out 😭
Everyone is talking about the subject of the video but I just love the person talking. What a great voice!
Girls watching the show wanted to be either Effy or Cassie.
I wanted to be like Jal. Talented. Determined. Loving.
this is one of the best Effy analysis videos I've seen online + you have a very soothing voice
i didn’t really like Effy lol In the first season i did, because she had Tony to balance her out, but in the second gen i just didn’t like her that much
Finally someone made a good analysis of her. Congrats!
This is so so beautifully done
i can not overstate how impressed i am with how well put together this video is!!
It's actually embarrassing how many times I tried to recreate Effy's iconic Make-Up look that you showed as the first image of her in this video and how I failed every single time lol-
What an amazing analysis. When I was a teen I was such a mix of Effy and Cassie (not because I wanted to be but because I had stuff going on), skins helped me greatly since I felt at least in a fictional world someone was a bit like me.
OMG I'm so glad you guys have decided to do your analysis on Effy Stonem!
I love your style analyses, and I had hoped you'd do Effy next, she is just such an icon!
The way you explained and articulated this and tied her character and experiences throughout the show is so amazing I hope you will do a analysis abt cassie soon
Also I appreciate that you do so many different types of shows!! Thank you for your time, I’m a sub!
I cried watching this video! Effy was my favorite Skins character. Freya is second. Thank you for analyzing her fashion so well! xx
I would kill for a Katherine Pierce style analysis.

The editing is amazing!! Looks like it took a long time
Gosh do I adore the excessive jewelry 🤩 I would love to play around with this style. The eye makeup is also amazing and makes her blue eyes pop amazingly ✨
I think people want to be effy because she seems as a character that doesn’t care and is free also her edgy , fun look is also probably why
Omg thank you so much for this video, it's so well put together and it has a great analysis
been waiting for this ! ❤️
Effy's clothes and her style were captivating! Everyone wanted to emulate those looks, nobody but models could, obviously.
i would love to see one of these videos about camille, by emily in paris, even though she is a secondary character, her style and personality are captivating and glamorous
I consumed this show as a teen, rewatching it so many times! I just loved how messy and raw the show was
Omg I was just waiting for this
this whole video is wow. thank you for this.
great video. i can tell a lot of work went into it. good job
Brilliant analytic piece of fashion vs psychology. I love it. Very thorough and well explained.
could you do a cassie from skins style analysis? she's my fave character ever!
im here to say love u and ur analysis and graphics and ur voice! lovely as always michelle
Please do a style analysis on American Horror Story: Coven. Ever since that show came out, I wanted to fill my closet with their clothes (yes, even Myrtle Snows' outfits). I'm still obsessed about it until now.
Madison Montgomery !!!!!
Keep up the good work xx
ok am i the only one who thought that the narrator's voice is soo soothing and calm?
Still having a hard time understanding how she could afford a Herve Leger dress on a beginner's office salary.
Maybe it was a really lucky second hand find?
She was working in the City/ Square mile or Canary wharf. The people that work there are RICH RICH and as a result even junior staff get paid way more than the average London salary let alone UK due to the nature of businesses that are there. So for me it's kinda believable. Esp if she was working in a boutique firm.
It's pretty believable, she works for a leading hedge fund company. Also, around this time is when a lot of those rent designer companies really started coming into the spotlight.
@@Belihoney Thanks for clearing that up! I was kinda annoyed at her mulberry bag and other designer items, but if the pay was good it makes sense.
@@inspiredby624 Herve Leger dresses are not lucky second hand find, and that colorblock version was from that season (I looked it up because it was so stunning, but noped at the price, even though it was on sale).
Absolutely love this analysis/editing such a great video.
I've always related to Effy.
Putting on a confident front when in reality, I'm depressed, scared and struggling yet it's hard for me to admit it until it hits me like a bus.
I wish people didn't glamorize her.
Dealing with your issues through drug abuse and s3x isn't fun, it kills you inside.
love this video. love effy, and love your voice. it's so soothing
It's nice to revisit Effy and the fashion that I was obsessed over when I was younger. You did so much work on this video and it shows! My only critique is the vocal fry- it's very distracting.
Yes I almost didn’t watch it... i feel bad to hold it against the narrator, but then again it’s not an inherent property of someone’s voice...
I BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE
