    i feel like people always neglect this psychological side of fashion that i find fascinating, often people will say to 'not judge a book by its cover' but the cover tells a lot about the contents

    • @permanentstateofawe6544
      @permanentstateofawe6544 3 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      I agree. Like, the cover isn't everything but it does tell you _something_ It's part of the book and what happens in it. Just like how clothes tell you the first glance of a person but you get to understand why they dress that way when you get to know the actual person.

    • @crunchygowon3681
      @crunchygowon3681 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I feel like when people say dont jugde a book by its cover they mean dont assume a person fits a stereotype based on what you know about them.

    • @ayde92829
      @ayde92829 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yeah, well, from a psychological perspective, sure. From a Sociological perspective: ones presentation has a lot to do with an interplay of expectation, societal expectations, and individual agency. However, the individual might choose to display different things depending on whether or not they want to illicit a response or perspective. So, depends on your understanding of the variables surrounding their behavior, and your lexicon of culturally associated decoration.

    I also noticed that a few of Cher's dresses have empire waists, which was the style in Jane Austen's time, so it could be a modernized version of clothes from Emma

    • @danichani33
      @danichani33 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Good catch! They were popular at the time, too, especially for special events like prom. I think it was half the influence of grunge babydoll dresses and the influence from Romeo + Juliet, plus Tocca was trendy, too. I only wore empire waist dresses in middle school

    I was a teenager in the 90s and lived through this era. When we went to see it at the movie theaters, I will be honest about what time era it captured. It captured high-end fashion from the early part of 1995. Some themes are more the early to mid-90s with the Grunge, but I would say in general most teens I went to high school with wore jeans and t-shirts. I was always more into dresses and tended to wear floral ones. I never wore the mini skirts though, usually longer ones.

      This is so interesting! Costume Designer Mona May did an amazing job on an archetypal take of the big trends of the decade. I always wondered how those who lived through this time truly dressed in their day to day lives. Thank you so much for sharing 🖤

    • @triantqueen
      @triantqueen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      It came out on my 13th birthday, and it was my birthday present to see it in the theater. In the 8th grade I had a black kilt skirt, black and white tartan vest and white collared shirt to go with it with knee highs and Mary Janes. But that was an outfit for special occasions like picture day. We mostly wore jeans, t shirts, and so much plaid flannel we could have clothed all the lumberjacks in Canada. Doc Martens, Vans, Converse. Overalls and baby tees. I wore all of it throughout high school. I still wear a lot of it today at 38.

      I was in junior high when this movie came out, and the girls including myself wore the knee high stockings, baby tees, short skirts, and etc. Awesome times back then!❤️ I love this movie

      @JuliasHairJourney 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@vanessabell7867 Yes, my sister was the same age and wore those things. I was a bit more just about dresses that were floral and knee-length or longer. I also wore leggings.

    Fun little "clue" that I noticed, was that when Cher was at the mall and talking with Christen, she wore a green dress with a waistline that ended very high. I think this may have been a nod to Jane Austen's Emma, and the whole regency period fashion style, because, it was written/ published and set in the regency era, which had the same waistline as the green dress.

    90s kid. I loved Clueless. Wanted to be Liv Tyler as Corey in Empire Records. My dark side was Courtney Love ( people say Minaj has a corruptive influence )
    Love how you’ve articulated and validated the power of fashion
    The tag trade has a diminished value to those who identify with higher thinking
    The psychology of fashion is something, which as an artist, I have never been able to articulate, but, have always been aware of and experienced.
    I love clothing as wearable art.
    I don’t appreciate high end clothing for its tribal identity as a status or luxury item
    More I appreciate high end clothing for their beauty
    The perfect weight, the fairy stitching, the attention to detail
    I appreciate work which is the work of artisans
    I’d like to close with an illuminating insight upon privilege
    “ If you can wake up, choose what you want to wear and what you want to eat - you are more privileged than you realise “
    I reflect upon this
    A beautiful mother of my Vietnamese ex partner once told me that growing up she owned only two sets of clothing ( a woman now gorgeously draped in gold 💛 but who supports her family at home )
    Her day wear and her special clothes.
    My grandmother described similar stories growing up in the war.
    To experience fashion as a form of expression of self identity is a privilege
    I am grateful every day 💛

      As I say shopping was not a huge pastime of mine you go to the city a few times a year for some clothes and then you just live your life in them. I like things to coordinate and fit properly maybe that says something about my identity but people who like fashion as an art form should not be stereo typed as stupid or shallow necessarily either. Sure I had a plaid skirt at 16 but lots of jeans and plaid shirts and crop tops and such too the film just reflects the fashion of that era but grunge was in too. I spent lots of time in my room doing school work or writing poetry making mix tapes and collages on the phone with friends but not out shopping.
