Best talking parrot in the world! Clover knows 350+ words (with subtitles)

  • Clover, a Congo African Grey parrot shows off some of her 350-word vocabulary. This was Clover's winning entry in the "professional" division of the Kaytee International "Best Talking Parrot" competition in 2011.
    For those of you that enjoy this video and hope to get a parrot, I caution you that besides the cute talking, Clover spends 6+ hours a day clicking, honking, whistling, car alarms, shrieking, clucking, and begging for junk food, more nuts, more fruit, more showers, etc.
    Parrots are messy, poopy, destructive, bitey and throw sticky food everywhere. Because of Clover, I spent over an hour a day vacuuming and doing other cleaning. Parrots like African Greys create up to a tablespoon of "dust" in their feathers every day. Despite my perpetual cleaning, dust from Clover's feathers got into my 1-year-old laptop and destroyed it.
    Parrots need almost non-stop interaction and care during the day. Parrots the size of Clover also need about $500-1000 in toys and "gear" every year just to keep them occupied for a few minutes of the day.
    Don't get one if you do not have almost limitless money. Besides the purchase price (medium-large parrots are typically over $1000 in the U.S.) and a large cage ($500-$2000), parrots are extremely expensive to maintain. They need an endless supply of new toys...organic food...fresh food supplements... large cage... play stands... $300 typical annual vet appointment (if there is nothing wrong), etc. Please visit this site: www.parrotsr4ever.org/Pre_Aqui..., and click on all the links before getting a parrot.I wish I had found that site before getting Clover!
    If your dream is to have a 3 year old, biting, screaming, destructive child in the room with you for the next 35 years, by all means get a parrot. But please adopt it from rescue. Some estimates show that 1 MILLION parrots are currently in rescues in the USA awaiting homes. These were all birds that people got as babies thinking they would raise it "their way" and it would be great. Note that it was not, and they ended up giving it away. Adult rescue parrots are often easier to train than babies and more grateful to adopters too. Thanks!
    P.S. I got Clover while living in Istanbul and had her from 2008-2012. I filled out tons of government agency applications to bring her back to the U.S. when I returned home. Most were approved, but one permit was denied due to the presence of bird flu in Turkey at that time. In the end, she stayed behind in Istanbul with a wonderful young couple who also have another female African Grey. She has continued her life of free-flying indoors, and being out of her cage most of the day with owners who work at home.

      @@body1702 to be able to talk like human the parrot will need to learn words first, so the first person who ever heard a parrot talk was the same one who thought it, probably because he/she noticed the parrot mimics other animals very good and decided to try if it can mimic words as well. So the first person who heard it talk was most likely "holy shit it worked"

    When I lived in Belize, we had a yellow headed parrot, named Maggie. A tourist had bought her and found out she couldn't take her back, so we ended up with her. Her first words were "Paula, HELP!" It took me a while to figure out who was saying it.LOL
    She was also our watch dog, we had her cage outside, so when people approached she would say "Hello" or "Good Morning". Everything this lady said is true!! The attention, the toys, the poop, the food, and destroying your furniture is like living with a 2 year old for 35+ years. Maggie gave us lots of joy, especially when she sang songs, cause we sang a lot. However, we had to move back to the US and had to leave her behind with another couple.

    • @CircusDogs
      @CircusDogs  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for this great story. I did research in Costa Rica years ago, and knew a family with a yellow-head in the same situation. She hung out on a huge mango tree in the front yard by day, slept indoors, had baths and chatted with her people, who spent most of their time in the yard with her doing work and preparing food. Sorry you had to leave her behind, but glad you found a nice place for her. Parrots live a long time, even longer than horses. That's why both parrots and horses often have several owners during their lives... much more so than dogs or cats. I tried to raise Clover to be socialized and speak in a G-rated way just in case I ever left Turkey and would need to rehome her, and that turned out to be a good decision. With her tricks, talking and socialization, she was highly adoptable and landed a wonderful home.

    okay, i read your summary above now let me tell you about Casper, my 17 yr old Congo African Grey Parrot my parents rescued after she had been abandoned. By the time she had been medically cleared and all fees were paid my folks had her for about $2500 and she still wears her leg band placed on her when they got her. She has been healthy and happy and precocious, social, loving, like a lapdog with feathers at times....but not ever once did anyone in our family ever consider pushing her to train for any show...she is very intelligent, has well over two hundred clearly spoken words and many completely thought out phrases she comes up with on her own. She is not simply a mimic, she is capable of thought and reason and she continues to surprise me daily. I inherited her a couple of years ago, and she has taken to me as if i am her mommy. She misses my dad who passed 12 yrs ago, when Casper was only about 4 or 5 yrs old. My mother is still alive and well but cannot care for the birds any longer so I have Casper and her roommates. My dad built an aviary for the birds and a huge cage customized for Casper and she is happy and loved and brilliant. But I have never once considered making a mockery of her.

      @d.e.b.b5788 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      What's even freakier is that they sound EXACTLY like the person who they're mimicking. So people passing by the front window hearing a wolf whistle and a 'how you doing, sweetheart, give me a kiss' think it's ME instead of the bird. I got some weird looks from the neighbors when I first moved here. Now they're used to it, and they teach him words in polish which I don't understand. An old man who used to live next door died; every once in a while, I hear what sounds like his voice coming from my bird cage. It's a little unnerving.

    • @wiilyum
      @wiilyum 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Dee B o wow that's creepy! They sound like fun pets though even though I heard they can make A LOT of noise

    • @d.e.b.b5788
      @d.e.b.b5788 10 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      The parrot family varies in how noisy they are; certain types tend to screech, others don't. African grays can screech but very rarely do so (haven't heard mine screech in years), however they have the capacity for high decibels at all kinds of sounds. If you want a relatively quiet parrot, get a pionus. I have one of those too, and other than his talking and whistling, he's virtually silent. NO screeching at all. BUT; he barks like a dog, so whenever someone walks by his window, I get the same noise that someone with a yappy mutt does. Lots of parrots learn to use english (or whatever language, or whatever sounds) to get what they want; when you respond in any way to a noise they can make, they learn to make that sound when they want the behavior that the sound gets you to do! So, just never respond in any way to a screech, make absolutely no response at all; don't yell, don't move or change your behavior in any way, and you'll get less screeching! People that get upset over screeching are actually giving the bird entertainment so the bird learns to get that entertainment by screeching. then he gets to see his human jump up and down and make noise too!

    • @d.e.b.b5788
      @d.e.b.b5788 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      They aren't intrinsicly noisy; they don't usually screech on their own, but they learn other bird's sounds easily. So if you have another noisy bird, your gray will learn the 'noise'. And there's no way to know if a bird will talk. In discussions with other bird owners, it's possible that how you interact with your bird will determine how likely he is to talk. Treat him like a person, and maybe he'll act like a person. Remember, they only learn sounds (and words) that they want to. Make your bird want to talk to you and maybe he will. Talk to him all the time, as if you will be expecting an answer just like when you talk to another person. And if he sees you talking to another person, he'll get the idea that talking back is normal. I even had a lovebird that talked a little. So I believe it's not a question of if, but when they decide to talk.
