I had 2 savages back in the days..never touch my T maxx, after. I install the xtm 2.47 before the .25 came out. The parts on Savage are beeffy out of the box..after they figure out the original dogbone were too weak for .25 Been looking for used extended Savage to add to my brushless conversion collection. 4092 1600kv on 6s will fit in there. :-p I used to take apart the main one.. Once a week for cleaning...everything. I drove it mud...mud :-P....mud and water..will kill the swtich pulling both different out. :-P..have it back together in 30mins. I knew every part and screws on that truck.
hey man, which model T-maxx did you have. I will show a size comparison of this savage against the T-maxx 3.3. But let me tell you right now the last gen T-maxx is only about 1 inch shorter than this Savage XL. Also is it me or do the savage's upper suspension links seem really weak and flexible, along with the tie-rods.
Can't go wrong with an hpi. Hpi savage is legendary. I used too have one myself they are insane in terms of power. Hpi resantly gone under some big owner ship changes and a few changes too the cars. I enjoyed the video very informative.
I'd say you got a pretty sweet deal for $100, it looks to be well taken care of and not used very much. Where I am, in the used R/C marketplace you can't even get a used 2wd slash that has been beat up for $100, everyone wants a kings Ransome for junk. Nice find man, enjoy.
Awesome purchase for hundred bucks. Wow I purchased the hpi savage x 4.6 back in October of 2015 and I've idled 3 tanks drove 2 tanks at quarter throttle and that's it. I bought over $400 in spare OEM parts from dollar hobbyz. Cool feature of savage fuel tanks is they have a clunk filter inside the tanks little fyi.
the reverse module comes with a special mixer that is plugged into the receiver, apparently it will prevent you from shifting incorrectly, and all gears are operable in both forward and reverse. IT's only about 50-60 bucks total, might consider getting it.
I had one years ago. It was awasome but it had one big flaw, if the tank is full the motor runs great but if the tank is half full the motor starts to run lean so you need to tune it constantly
hey buddy!! thanks for letting me know, I will monitor how it runs and make sure there are no vacuum leaks. I usually only fill the tank 3/4 of the way up anyway, maybe that will stabilize it some.
hey my dude!! I've still got it, yes. did you see the second part of this video, It would up breaking toward the end on it's very first roll over. I can't blame the truck because after looking at the broken part I noticed it was incorrectly assembled.
The cen racing GST 7.7/colossus came with a 3 speed trans with reverse. still have 3 of them we run configured 3 different ways. I keep running them because they are built like tanks and can take a beating and are pretty reliable once you figure them out. the huge + factor is I can still buy any part I need including new engines factory direct from cen racing 13+ years later.

I always keep an eye out for deals on eBay. as of right now eBay has a couple of trucks. one that’s almost mint RTR for 630$ and A really nice first gen- genesis with no engine for 219 bucks. I do have team Associated MGT 8.0 also that’s totally awesome truck! sucks that I bought it just as they were phasing them out so I use it sparingly because they don’t make parts for them anymore. luckily I was able to find a nice used one to break down for parts on cregs list and picked up a brand new engine in the box at a closing hobby shop before parts like engines became nonexistent. I saw your video for the HPI nitro 3 speed auto and was stoked looks like a bad ass truck. surprisingly you can still find those brand new for what a cen racing gst 7.7 cost in 2007. i’ll definitely check out that Savage XL video more than likely that will be my next rc purchase. i’ve been watching your channel for a little while now you still run nitro and gas😃👍

YUP, that's the same car my friend. It's surprisingly large on the inside. I need to do another video on the engineering of the car alone. It's got many surprises. For one, it's a RWD, and Rear engine car with a 5 speed manual transmission (but it shifts like an AUTO because there is no clutch pedal, but an electric clutch motor that engages the clutch for you). Also has a side air intake.

Hobby Products International, is that Savage manufactured in Japan? Now there is something I haven't seen in 2 decades, Made in Japan 😔. I converted mine to electric a few years ago, I still have all the nitro parts minus the engine. By the way the tires stay crooked because of the giant foams inside the tire, but they are super light and great for jumping. The Savage was the first great basher. The one shock on the Octane is a big bore shock, personally I prefer the big bore shocks but their caps break.

Love the videos man! Recently picked up a nitro savage xl from my local hobby shop. Having a hard time finding parts for it being that HPI has been dealing going out of business/under new management. Any recommendations where I’d be able to find part other than ebay. It’s missing the rear center diff dog bone and believe it might be missing the diff cup. Thanks
whats up man!! I just searched ebay for parts too, and not that many available at this point. From my experience the drive shafts are the most annoying to look for because they are very specific. The diff cups should be the same from the other savage models. I feel your pain bro!!, let me know if you find any parts!!!
Awesome truck I've noticed the engine is bigger on my kyosho inferno neo 3.0, 21 size engine (3.5) than my hpi trophy truggy 4.6 I would say the kyosho is a bit faster too the 4.6 has a little bit more torque
I know right, really helpful info to have. I had to charge and discharge the original RX pack like 5 times for it to being working. It seems to be usable now, but I might still put in the new RX pack I got.

hey man! The only real best 1/5 monster truck is the Primal MT, which I already own. In terms of the 1/8 scales it would be a tie between this and the associated MGT 8.0. There is a pretty cool CEN GST 7.7 but I'd stay away from CEN, that's asking for parts problems down the road. The MGT 8.0 has a larger engine than this XL K5.9.

@@hybrid32494 It is a little longer. I had to get one for mine but then I changed to a pull start engine because my 5.9 was locked up beyond repair. It's specifically made for the length of the XL chassis.
thanks man!! I figured that was the case, I tried the regular shaft and it does fit, but I really had to jiggle it around and do my best to get to the backplate. It does work though.
@@hybrid32494 I've got a HPI Pulse and a Trophy Truggy (non runner). Forgive me bro I caught the brushless Arrma bug, the neighborhood isn't a fan of the brap brap! My K5.9 is the absolute last iteration of them. You can tell by the 4 big bores instead of the 8 shock setup.

hey man, I've been looking for the Octane version for a long time, they are rare. I guess almost nobody bought them because they were really overpriced and quite slow for a nitro truck with a 3-speed. You're right, the octane was their last attempt at the monster truck market and the end was near.

Sorry broski but you are WRONG!😁 The biggest Savage HPI ever made was the Savage 5T which was a 1/5th scale sized Savage XL with a Baja 5T type body. SUPER rare RC that was never sold in the US, only overseas. I'd love to own one as a collectors item.

yup brad, they did. There were a few models called the E-Savage and some E-Zilla conversion models. The modern electric savage became the hpi Savage FLUX HP. I own an original dual 550 motor HPI E-Savage from the early 2000's. Ive showed it in a few of my videos briefly.

The octane was their one chance of staying in business but they never really produce them making them unavailable. I remember forums talking about waiting and waiting and waiting for the octane. Never happened

hey man!! Good guess, you got it!! It's the cheap man's Porsche 911, because it's Rear Wheel Drive and rear engine and basically a manual trans with the way it's currently setup to shift. It's a 5 speed gearbox without a clutch pedal, but it's got an electric motor that engages the clutch for you, this is why it's super clunky.
@@hybrid32494 My dad has one and thats how auto 18 wheelers shift. Its the most solid type of auto just not the smoothest cuz it really a manual with solenoids that hit the next gear when its time. The clutch is still fairly tight during shifts. Its auto rpm drop that allows it to fall in next gear. With alot of practice you can shift a manual car without touching clutch. I drove my wifes daytona for a week with a broken clutch cable. Just had to turn off car for stop lights and restart in first for green.
Its a centrifical clutch like rc cars and just an auto throttle cut for shifts so it falls in next gear after the shift solenoids hit if not mistakin. Very fun and like em. And if like my dads you dont have to hold starter key till started. Just bump the key and will finish on its own. My dads is yellow and black. I really wish red or blue or silver and black

hey buddy! if you're referring to the throttle return spring, then that part is always looped around the metal high speed needle and the throttle arm itself. IT's goal is to keep pressure on the slide carb and to return the motor to IDLE is power is lost. Was this helpful for you?

I don’t know if you read all these comments but check it out it’s a really really great truck I truly believe it’s the best RC monster truck you can buy of course you can get bigger but it’s the fastest and it’s the most durable and it’s just the best quality the only problem is the original engine is great but the way they manufactured the one-way bearing is stupid it constantly breaks and constantly has problems and you will run into it if you use it a lot if you have to use in force engine force engines there from Germany you can get all the way up to about a 5.9 I still have mine running really good at it’s six years old but it runs great I have a Chevy Silverado body on it and that force engine I’m telling you about get that thing off some 20 footers check out my savage XL nitro My TH-cam is Jezzee Stewart

I just upgraded my 25 radio equipment to the waterproof digital version with fail safe and the digital torque servos happy days :-)

YUP, that's the same car my friend. It's surprisingly large on the inside. I need to do another video on the engineering of the car alone. It's got many surprises. For one, it's a RWD, and Rear engine car with a 5 speed manual transmission (but it shifts like an AUTO because there is no clutch pedal, but an electric clutch motor that engages the clutch for you). Also has a side air intake.

I converted mine to electric a few years ago, I still have all the nitro parts minus the engine.
By the way the tires stay crooked because of the giant foams inside the tire, but they are super light and great for jumping.
The Savage was the first great basher.
The one shock on the Octane is a big bore shock, personally I prefer the big bore shocks but their caps break.

Love the videos man! Recently picked up a nitro savage xl from my local hobby shop. Having a hard time finding parts for it being that HPI has been dealing going out of business/under new management. Any recommendations where I’d be able to find part other than ebay. It’s missing the rear center diff dog bone and believe it might be missing the diff cup. Thanks
whats up man!! I just searched ebay for parts too, and not that many available at this point. From my experience the drive shafts are the most annoying to look for because they are very specific. The diff cups should be the same from the other savage models. I feel your pain bro!!, let me know if you find any parts!!!
i usually replace my parts in pairs and keep the old part as extra not keep one old part on and only replace the broken side
that's 100% the right way to do it bro!! I rem reading an article about that in an older rc magazine one time.

Awesome truck I've noticed the engine is bigger on my kyosho inferno neo 3.0, 21 size engine (3.5) than my hpi trophy truggy 4.6 I would say the kyosho is a bit faster too the 4.6 has a little bit more torque

I know right, really helpful info to have. I had to charge and discharge the original RX pack like 5 times for it to being working. It seems to be usable now, but I might still put in the new RX pack I got.

hey man! The only real best 1/5 monster truck is the Primal MT, which I already own. In terms of the 1/8 scales it would be a tie between this and the associated MGT 8.0. There is a pretty cool CEN GST 7.7 but I'd stay away from CEN, that's asking for parts problems down the road. The MGT 8.0 has a larger engine than this XL K5.9.

@@hybrid32494 It is a little longer. I had to get one for mine but then I changed to a pull start engine because my 5.9 was locked up beyond repair. It's specifically made for the length of the XL chassis.
thanks man!! I figured that was the case, I tried the regular shaft and it does fit, but I really had to jiggle it around and do my best to get to the backplate. It does work though.

My K5.9 is the absolute last iteration of them. You can tell by the 4 big bores instead of the 8 shock setup.

hey man, I've been looking for the Octane version for a long time, they are rare. I guess almost nobody bought them because they were really overpriced and quite slow for a nitro truck with a 3-speed. You're right, the octane was their last attempt at the monster truck market and the end was near.
Just so you gentlemen know, if you don't know already, Ripmaxx has put up HPI for sale. Appears they couldn't make things ($) work despite all the promises. I regret selling my XL and would love the XL 2.0 to hit the market.

Sorry broski but you are WRONG!😁 The biggest Savage HPI ever made was the Savage 5T which was a 1/5th scale sized Savage XL with a Baja 5T type body. SUPER rare RC that was never sold in the US, only overseas. I'd love to own one as a collectors item.

yup brad, they did. There were a few models called the E-Savage and some E-Zilla conversion models. The modern electric savage became the hpi Savage FLUX HP. I own an original dual 550 motor HPI E-Savage from the early 2000's. Ive showed it in a few of my videos briefly.

Anyway, I got this one used too and it was screwed quite badly too, needless to say it was incorrectly assembled too and I kept breaking rod ends because they were reversed, lol. Also the 3-speed didn't shift at all, I eventually fixed it. I got a couple other vids on this savage, top speed runs of 46 MPH bro!!!

hey man! your best bet is to look on ebay, there are some being listed once in a while. This engine is basically still sold by HPI so getting a new one in not Impossible, but also not cheap. Thanks for watching bro.

hey man!! Good guess, you got it!! It's the cheap man's Porsche 911, because it's Rear Wheel Drive and rear engine and basically a manual trans with the way it's currently setup to shift. It's a 5 speed gearbox without a clutch pedal, but it's got an electric motor that engages the clutch for you, this is why it's super clunky.
@@hybrid32494 My dad has one and thats how auto 18 wheelers shift. Its the most solid type of auto just not the smoothest cuz it really a manual with solenoids that hit the next gear when its time. The clutch is still fairly tight during shifts. Its auto rpm drop that allows it to fall in next gear. With alot of practice you can shift a manual car without touching clutch. I drove my wifes daytona for a week with a broken clutch cable. Just had to turn off car for stop lights and restart in first for green.
Its a centrifical clutch like rc cars and just an auto throttle cut for shifts so it falls in next gear after the shift solenoids hit if not mistakin. Very fun and like em. And if like my dads you dont have to hold starter key till started. Just bump the key and will finish on its own. My dads is yellow and black. I really wish red or blue or silver and black

hey buddy! if you're referring to the throttle return spring, then that part is always looped around the metal high speed needle and the throttle arm itself. IT's goal is to keep pressure on the slide carb and to return the motor to IDLE is power is lost. Was this helpful for you?

I don’t know if you read all these comments but check it out it’s a really really great truck I truly believe it’s the best RC monster truck you can buy of course you can get bigger but it’s the fastest and it’s the most durable and it’s just the best quality the only problem is the original engine is great but the way they manufactured the one-way bearing is stupid it constantly breaks and constantly has problems and you will run into it if you use it a lot if you have to use in force engine force engines there from Germany you can get all the way up to about a 5.9 I still have mine running really good at it’s six years old but it runs great I have a Chevy Silverado body on it and that force engine I’m telling you about get that thing off some 20 footers check out my savage XL nitro My TH-cam is Jezzee Stewart
