The non shifting HPI Savage line of nitro monster trucks is here. Special shoutout to the owner of the X4.6. My own XL K5.9 hit a top speed of 44 MPH previously, but the gears were not shifting, after heavy repairs by the HPI owners manual it's time to see if the factory 3-speed will finally shift into anything. While I was running my own savage another savage owner showed up and surpringly his transmission did not shift either, it also did not wheelie. I tuned the high speed needle, low speed needle and adjusted the shift point multiple times and towards the end it was no longer locked in second gear. Well i did it again i fliped my revo 3.3 and somehow it busted my spug gear! Had to pull the transmittion for the first time and it was really easy so thank you traxxas. Also cant wait to see the savages full potential

@@peterrcbasher The problem is the factory tune won't always work best, but it's a good starting point. I would recommend you do the "pinch test" as I did in this video and count how many seconds it takes to shut off (should be 4-5 seconds). Thats better because theres many environmental factors that will affect your tune you know. As long as your low speed needle is fine it should idle well, then you move on to the high speed and listen for the engine cutting out or not hitting high RPM.

I got my self a savage x 4.6 recently and it’s so fun to play with it. I had the issue where it hardly wheelies, It’s a 2speed gear inside it, thanks for explanation I’m going to look into the gearing but I’m still new do this savage business
Its awesome you got that thing shifting now. Only thing is your idle is really high, but yeah, make sure you get a dam good battery in there. You are lucky you didnt have it full throttle when it died.
Try these gear settings and let me know how it runs .
Loosen the first gear clutch just a tad so it will shift into 2nd gear a bit earlier and tighten up the 2nd gear clutch to shift almost at red line into the 3rd. Also it sounds a bit lean on the high end

hey bro!! your adjustment suggestion is exactly what my thoughts were, right on brother!! I agree it's kind of lean at high RPM, it must be something about this engine, because you can see how much smoke there is at low RPM. It was bogging down before I richened it. I keep the temp gauge on it and check it after a few speed passes to make sure.
@@hybrid32494 I usually tune the low end while driving to make sure I got enough torque for the launches and the high end with the wheels off the ground making adjustments while running the engine to make sure its not too rich .
But ill be looking forward to another speed test after you get it up and running 100%

Get the rear hub carriers that eliminate the rear toe links. I did it with both my savages. One of the best upgrades for the savage. They're pretty cheap too.

whats up my dude!! High five on the 350Z. I used to be a Nissan salesman, I sold the 370Z models back in 2013-2014, loved those cars. They are not that fast, not that comfy, but they sure are head turners, you know. I would still buy one to this day, if I could find a non-molested 6 speed. 1) yes, this truck does have a full set of functional lights with turn signals (installed by last owner) I disconnected them all until I can replace the RX battery, because it's just not drivable now with the lights draining the pack.
2) I meant to say richened the HSN not High Throttle, lol.
3) That 4.6 savage isn't mine, it was just a random RC guy who I helped while I was filming, his didn't shift either, LOL.
4) We will get great on-board video of the 3 speed shifting soon, I just need to make some more minor adjustments, maybe to shift earlier, what do you think?

I bought mine new in 2015 it's been sitting for almost 5 years I just ordered a new clutch trying to get it running again. It suddenly stopped rolling forward. I hope that was the problem.

Just picked up a restored like new savage 4.6. Engine needs break in. Any brand of fuel you think is best? What nitro percentage? I have limited nitro experience. Been an electric guy my whole life except for 1 Revo 3.3 I owned 7 years ago. Sold it cause I didnt like the extra work that goes with nitro. Ready to give it a second try
hey buddy, welcome to the NitroGang, you got a great truck to start with. The savage is a simpler truck in terms of electronics and working on it, but the same tuning issues will remain ofcourse, as with any nitro. But I'm here to help. Anyway, you could use anything from 20-25% nitro. I recently switched fuel due to market conditions. Used to run Byron 20% for years, its a safe choice. If you can find it now days. I now run 30% bones brew fuel you could buy on their website, it's substantially cheaper too. Watch my newer videos you will see I talked about it. The main thing for break in is making sure there is alot of smoke and the engine runs though it's 6-8 tanks and heat cycles. First 2 tanks Idle-25% throttle.Tank 3-4 idle - 50% throttle. The rest is up to you, but don't full throttle it until tank 6+. I usually run 2 heat cycles per tank btw, not the whole tank. This is highly subjective but the goal is to get the heat cycles in and alot of smoke out.
The F4.6 is a really nice engine, feel like buying another Savage lol

In the previous video, there was no sound of any gear shifting? So much tweaking, low speed, high speed, and transmission. But really great troubleshooting
Hey bro, yup, I knew something was wrong, but not many people pointed out that it's impossible for this to do 44 in first gear, only a couple people did. The NItroGang was slightly wrong this time, but I got it working, still needs more adjustment, but at least now we know the clutches do work. These motors honestly don;'t tune well, if you read any forums everyone complains about the tune. Mine runs well, but even I notice how it acts rich at the low end and then lean on the top end, even though my carb is pretty normally tuned now and every nitro tuning rule has been followed, even the damn "pinch test"
getting back in to Nitro because of your videos. Thinking about getting a Savage XL 5.9 again, if I can find one. Do you have a solution for the half-tank lean issues I had with it back on 2010?
hey bro! Thanks for watching. I find the half-tank engine leaning out is just how these 5.9 motors are, I've noticed it myself too. That's why I run a temp gauge on it so I can eventually dial in the carb setting to prevent it if it's due to the motor getting hot. Generally it happens from an air leak, but seems its something else in these trucks, because an air leak would make it run much poorer than just half way though, you know. Most guys stick a dynamite 28 into it and call it a day.

hey buddy! I think your best bet is to find the old school 3-speed Optional upgrade for the 4.6 model. In reality the 3-speed only gives a little more top speed, my XL model got 46 MPH top speed after many many attempts. I would say it's more about gear ratios. You could gear a 2-speed to be faster than this 3-speed, you know.

hey bro! YEs, you can still get parts, depends what you need? I checked ebay and amazon, parts are still available. You gotta look at the owners manual and locate the part numbers and just put those into the search on ebay or amazon.
I have. A 5.9 Too. im having a problem. Mine starts and revs but dnt. Move .also if i roll car the spur dnt move and none of the gears striped any suggestions
How close were the factory recommended settings on 2nd and 3rd?
whats up dude, thanks for watching. I would say it was an average of half a turn more clockwise (later shift) than the factory setting. It's tricky because the way the factory settings are explained I mostly did trial and error a few times before I got it to shift at all. The spring in the clutches just loose their tension over time and the factory settings are just not reliable anymore, due to age and metal stresses.

Could use your in put also the collar on outside of my throttle linkage cam off then after i put it back on it slipped again and now i stripped the threads out of it So i am thinking of putting on two back to back . @@hybrid32494 Got my exceed rc hammer Thursday and now have 6 tanks run through it . Seems to run pretty good. Still running quite rich but it will wind up pretty good .Need to find a way to charge the batteries that i have in it with out having to take cover off everytime . Thank you for your channel. Oh the servo saver on my exceed wants to come loose and i have to keep on it when i notice the steering not what it was when i began the run did you have any problem with yours.

HA!!! So I was right when I commented in the last previous speed test video. I said that was not first gear. That 3 speed sounds sweeeeet when shifting man. Provs for helping the guys get the best out of their hpi truck. I must send you my kyosho sandmaster ST nitro 10 for a history lesson, cause I can’t find any information about it anywhere. I’ve googled pictures for it, but haven’t come across any, I’ve actually looked through 100s of pictures and not seen it. It’s got a 2 piece alloy chassis and an ACTS 10 engine and pull start big chrome wheels and a Toyota stadium truck body on it. Is there any way i can send you pictures of it so you could help a nitro gangster member.
whats up NItroGang! I remember your comment about it being impossible to hit 44 MPH in first gear, that's what made me really dig more. I speed tested it with just that one gear off camera btw, and it topped out at around 28 MPH, still pretty fast for just first gear. My goal is now to hit 50. U should be able to get a top speed of around 110km/h on a stock savage with the correct tune and gears settings
With my kyosho mad crusher 3 speed it wouldn't shift if the motor wasn't tuned right. Maybe you just had it really rich.

Thats a great truck you got, the Kyosho mad crusher, I've been considering it myself too. 3-speed BABY!!! anyway, you're right, without the high RPM these things won't shift. But trust me, I was already at the top RPM on this, it wasn't the engine's fault this time, the gears were just all not properly set to shift. I was already borderline tuning to lean, you know.
You dont always hear these cars shift through the gears although they are. You could hear my XL shift into 2nd but not 3rd although it was still shifting into 3rd
hey bro! Thanks for watching! You heard the gears shifting in this video right? It shifted into all 3 and sounded very distinct. If you don't hear it, then it's just not shifting. Generally if you don't hear it shift then it's stuck in the gear.

hey buddy! you need to adjust the 3rd gear shit point setscrew. I have a couple videos on here on that, just search the channel. BTW, the 3rd gear is adjustable without removing the trans, there is an access hole. Try to turn the setscrew OUT (left) for an earlier shift.

The Maxima is not only my favorite Nissan but, one of my favorite cars period. Unlike your Ford, it is a true poor man's BMW. My children are adults but I still prefer 4 doors as a daily driver. I suppose my dog qualifies is a dependent, why no tax breaks?
hey bro! Which model Maxima? That's one of my fav cars too, I used to sell them brand New Years ago during the 2013-2014 model years at a Nissan dealership. So I'm pretty much a Nissan expert too. LOL. The 350Z is almost a maxima, just has rear wheel drive, much sportier looking and more problems.
@@hybrid32494 I didn't care for the previous model design bu, t I've been a Maxima fan for many years. Drove my oldest daughter home from the hospital in one. I can't remember what it was called but, I preferred it to the Toyota that was its direct competition. Toyota Cressida maybe? The Maxima has the same base engine as the 350z but fewer performance enhancements. The intake is different as well. Non-turbo blocks are the same. Now when it comes to the 280z - 350z, I have always preferred the Supra.

hey buddy! I wish I had a spare 3-speed unit, unfortunately I only have the one that's in the original SAVAGE XL truck. Your best bet is to search eBay, there are sometimes new ones coming up for sale and I've even seen a few reverse modules being sold (old stock of course).

hey buddy!! What's up. Im always happy when anyone watched my vids, so thank you!! If you get yourself a normal basic single speed nitro RC, you will be fine. This model is basically the dinosaur of the RC world, it's old, discontinued and tough to deal with, you know. I still love it bc of it's history overall.

there is no way for it to starrt off in second gear or third gear....so when u stop or lift off the gas if its in second or third gear it will drop down back to first insanity... its shifts by syntactical force so it requires the gears t spin so fast to shift... u can hear clear as day if it shifts or not...if its not shift u can adjust the shift points on the side of the transmission with a allen key
Hey my dude, thanks for checking out this video, and I truly appreciate your comment. You are mostly correct, but I will say that the shift point could be so bad that it will sound or appear like it is stuck in second or third gear. Also, I have had clutches just pretty much stuck And they needed to be reset. on my Savage Excel, it was always in third gear even at very low RPM, until I took the clutch out and just reset the spring and the screw then it shifted normally. I guess you could say it was mostly seized and not returning back to a regular position as it should.

So I bought a savage awhile back I thought it was brand new seemed brand new owner said it was broken in that was it and ran 1 tank after.. but when hit the throttle it just doesn't seem to have much power at all doesn't shift should I mess with the settings any suggestions
