I remember reading about the air filter assembly on that thing being really funky. If it's not installed a very specific way, the thing either won't run, or won't run worth a crap, so be careful when taking things apart on it and make sure to put them back exactly how they came apart, since it appears to be one of the ones that actually runs!
I am just getting back into the hobby after about 25 years and I bought a Traxxas vxl rustler and it's been a lot of fun. The new technology is amazing compared to the rc 10 I had when I was a kid. Love the videos man I've learned a lot from you guys already so thanks for posting.
Man you're not kidding. Brushless, LiPo, and 2.4Ghz radio have CHANGED the GAME. I take this big ol' 9 pound Outcast truck out and get 12 or 15 minutes at full blast, and it goes like 50mph.
You'll probably address this when you replace the servos but it looks like the brakes were dragging. Whenever you let off on the throttle it slowed or almost stopped. When you get the ignition sorted, a rule of thumb for tuning the carb is to start how you did, turn it all the way in, then back out like a turn. They have a really good section on tuning it after it's been broken in. Very concise. I tried to see in the parts breakdown what kind of ignition system it has. couldn't really see from the parts breakout. Seems like you're getting a good strong spark though.
Awesome Kevin!!! It seemed to run rich in the beginning and lean at the end. Would be helpful to clean the carburettor, 2 stroke gas will gunk up after it hasn’t been used for a long time. New spark plug also helps to rule out a possible failure.
Yeah 99% of the time a small 2 stroke not running well is the carb. Might even need a tear down and have the jets cleaned out with carb cleaner and a Q tip. There's another youtuber, mustie1 who tears down ALL sorts of small engines and the majority of the time it's the carb. The jets get clogged up ALL the time. I mean, they are like .01" in dia so it's no wonder. Same as the needle valve in the float bowl.....1 teeny bit of crud and it'll flood all the time.
I was one of the unlucky few who actually purchased this 9 years ago. It came faulty from the factory & it's very hard/impossible to get it to work properly. I ended up converting it to electric. I still have all the octane parts sitting in a box
I love the way these trucks look. First time I saw it a long time ago I was blown away. I've never been a petrol or nitro guy always been team brushless but GOD DAMN this truck looks good
Regarding cutting out then this may help - If anyone has an issue with their Octane which makes it stall after a few minutes of running it stalls and then doesn't start until cooled down, the problem is with the Flywheel Sensor, you need to shave off some plastic from the bottom of the sensor so that it sits closer to the magnet. The heat makes it expand and move away from the magnet hence the stalling. I had that problem with my octane and was such a hard thing to figure out. I even got a new CDI on warranty but that wasn't the problem.
I had 3 of them and have videos on my channel. The problem I had was the trans calibration was installed as a nitro xl 5.9. It wouldn't work because the Gas engine didnt rev as high as the Nitro. The trans wouldnt shift and would run out of rpm very quick. Run the set screw out to loosen the preload and it started to rip! Getting the truck out of low gear about a 1/2 second after you pull the trigger is key. Use the torque. It is a great idea just a manufacturing glitch that could have been avoided.
Kevin I look up to you a lot and wanna be just like you I admire u all the time I always watch your videos I wanna meet u badly. Thanks kev for what u have done
That's great to see it working Kev, they were a problem in there day and a lot of videos of them not running. But what a rare truck, will be nice when fixed and in all it's glory.
The glitching servo is caused by the ignition modul. I have a savage octane, I moved the ignition module to under my rollbar cage and it stoped the glitching. The stalling is most likely not caused by the modual. It’s either bad carb settings or bad spark plug. The ignition modul either works or does not, there no in between.
I wondered if one of these would show up - loved the idea of it at the time. I do remember when they came out, many who posted videos had real problems getting a consistent tune - others no problem, as it should be with petrol. Al.
These things were notoriously bad when they were released, all the way to when they got discontinued. Ignition modules are known to fail, and it causes electrical interference with the receiver. Some guys were moving the receiver away from the engine and just running extensions, other people just dealt with it. Spectrum seemed to have the most interference, sanwa seemed alright.
Relocating the ignition box somewhere else or the receiver somewhere else fixes the issue with the glitching. Its because of the spark signals in the box, they interfere with the receiver signal
I had one of these epic cars and suffered all the same problems you've got, don't wanna tell ya how to suck eggs but the carb needs to be kept super clean and all mixture adjustments in super small increments, if you can find a better ignitor then that should help, if you eventually get it going well then you'll need to suss out the 3 speed transmission adjustments 😂 - HPI made a V2 of this car to fix some "known" issues but I'm not sure if they ever released it. I sold mine in the end and bought a Kraton 6s 😊
I had an RC car when I was 14 years old. I am 49 now. The RC was Panda brand if my memory is correct. It was an electric powerd dune buggy model. I think I payed around $200 for it. Had alot of fun with it. I've just recently found your channel and I really enjoy your videos!😊 I'm starting to think that I would like to get back into the RC world again because of watching your channel. But I doubt I could find a good RC car for $200 nowadays 🤔😁 I'll start saving up for one. Do you or anyone here in the comments have a suggestion for a good RC car for a beginner? I'm open for electric or Nitro suggestions.
I had enough of trying to get the petrol mower to start every time I wanted to mow, thats why i bought a battery mower instead, buggar having a petrol RC car LOL great vid Kev…
Kev, before you really beat on this one, you need to buy some sheet metal and make a custom cover for the bottom cavity, if you dont you will shatter the break disks when you land jumps on uneven surfaces, the throttle servo wire is also vulnerable from underneath, so making a metal cover is almost mandatory for this truck. My octane was the one rc I regret selling…
Just took apart my first amateur RC ( litehawk overdrive 4x4 truck ) I rusted my on off switch took apart the ESC and removed the switch. Hopefully I can go to my local instead of ordering. Good luck me🤞
good evening I always enjoy watching it. I think that the bad ignition of the Savage Octane is probably the flywheel magnet installation. Please take a look and see.
It's an expensive turd. When it's tuned well, which will last for about an hour before you have to dick around with it again, it sounds awesome but makes no power. I bought one and the other my friend had in his shop sat there until he closed his doors a couple years ago lol. Total bust, this rc. Mine is in a box somewhere here, I did rob the tires and wheels from it tho.
Quick hint: since a few nitro videos I've noticed that they don't seem to roll, when releasing the throttle. Either you are going throttle-brake real quick or you might adjust the trim/linkage. The clutch(es) will thank you. 🫡
Had one of them years ago, lots of fun, the only thing I remember even now is how stupidly loud it was. As for glitching, in this one receiver is to close to ignition module witch causes interference, move it out of the battery box and it works fine.
kevin if its a actual spark plug wire its old so could be rusty inside so take spark plug boot off and look if it is cut it back to where not rusty it could explain intermittent spark like on a actual dirtbike etc
I remember reading about this in some kind of RC magazine when it came out. I could barely afford to fix my rustler XL5 back then but always thought this was cool
Hi im from germany… sorry for my Englisch 😅… the ignition is Not the Problem! Is normelly indestructible. The Savage octane Engine has ne thermo Problem, is overheating and stoppt ever. Cold or warm out Temperatur, 5-7 min. Hie is out and Tow times later works he normally .
@ 3:10 don't test spark plugs that close to their holes. The air fuel mixture gets blown out and ignited by the spark plug. I've set myself on fire like this before 🙃. Just personal experience lol
Why the video title? Why is it banned?
Shops banned it by not stocking it because of the problems
@@KevinTalbotTV عقغاقخثتثته
@@KevinTalbotTV that doesnt mean it was banned lol it never was banded
It's a two-stroke so it's band in California
Try an rc x rider

I'm really happy to have two of these. Both are running well.
Love your vids Kev! Been watching every video for years! Keep what your doing, it’s amazing!!!

One of my favorite videos. You have done with your octane 👍
I love the way these trucks look. First time I saw it a long time ago I was blown away. I've never been a petrol or nitro guy always been team brushless but GOD DAMN this truck looks good
Just think nine years ago you couldn’t afford a rc monster truck and now your driving a real monster truck ! Congrats you’ve come a long way !

thanks bro ill try that!
or just try a 4 stroke its more faulty but idles great and has little to no stalling problems
very nice car. I've had the Savage 25 at home since around 2005 and I rode it almost every day back then. Very robust for the time.
I had 3 of them and have videos on my channel. The problem I had was the trans calibration was installed as a nitro xl 5.9. It wouldn't work because the Gas engine didnt rev as high as the Nitro. That's great to see it working Kev, they were a problem in there day and a lot of videos of them not running. But what a rare truck, will be nice when fixed and in all it's glory.
Interesting truck, seemed torquey but slow. It'll probably go better when you give it a good going over.

Team Losi also made a Petrol version of either the LMT or the Truggy with a similar engine as well
LOVE the classical music, pls keep!!!
Love this can we please have more on this build. I ve had one for years and its really temperamental 👍👍👍
I've never heard of that Savage but it's pretty awesome!
Man I’m grateful for modern brushless now 😅
I've got 3 of theses savages .. not the gas version but the nitro versions.. I love them
Great vid Kev. Any more classic rc's in the collection worth a show?
I still have two, what a find! 🙌🏼
So satisfying!! All that work payed off to a degree!! Run away electric 😂😂
I'm hoping to get one I built out this summer too, absolute pain but super cool trucks!
What a cool truck! I love the modern stuff but that sort of thing is exciting in a different way. Always a pleasure to watch your videos Kev 👍
