Just a suggestion, to avoid copyright for playing the music, use the Acapella. Google how to remove music from songs to make acapellas. It would take your reviews to the next level imo ✊🏿
@RobMarkman I really appreciate your content, and reading of the verses is what more people need they're so upset about reading loved when kendrick did the Harper Bazaar article. You're a Gem
“Kiss you in the back of the class” made me think of someone creative in deep thoughts tapping their pencil or pen to their lips as they imagine and contemplate what they write or draw… imagining. just me?
These types of breakdowns are so important for the youth. You are training the ears of those who want to LISTEN. You are sharing the knowledge of Hip Hop. And for that I applaud you sir 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I appreciate the nuanced, informed takes man and looking forward to the breakdowns whenever they are ready. Getting real tired of the “KENDRICK DECLARES WAR” videos all over youtube
⚠️Also, go to 2:22 on the Gloria track KENDRICKS ad lib is the sound of a pen click when you press it! " Then fall right back in love the very moment that I touch you" --> "Shhhh kah kah " 🤯🤯🤯🤯
As a lover of poetry this was so beautifully written. Often in poetry we know the subject due to the title but the way he masterfully gave life to his craft is something very difficult to do. I didn’t know until the end and then all of the dots connected but I knew it wasn’t about Whitney because of the name. For me if it was about me or us the title better not have a random name on it. He has said in multiple interviews he carries a notebook and writes his thoughts and ideas down so the actual pen type could be called Gloria.
Just started the video, and not sure if its been brought up, but gloria is “glory” in Spanish. Names are capitalized, seeing as the “gloria” isn’t capitalized, may mean it’s not a name. The Spanish theme throughout the album also ads to my belief that “gloria” being his pen means: Kendrick’s glory is his pen and his pen work.
One of the most beautiful things about this is some little kid is going to listen to this and have an epiphany. The realization of what their art can do for them will hit them like a train. I hope I’m still alive to hear this future star talk about what a revelation Kendricks work was.
Yes! Thank you for this breakdown. Def my personal favorite on the project. My favorite thing about Kendrick is him brining us into his world in a seamless way. The SZA feature gives the song another layer.
My guy! It is dumb how locked in we were this song! When you mentioned both Common and Nas's concept songs we became friends! I said the same on stream!
Keep doing your thing. Your channel and Prof. Skye are my 2 favorite channels for breakdowns..it’s more than just a reaction from y’all two, y’all actually attempt to breakdown meanings, etc
In regards to the “wrap it up because I didn’t trust you”… We know 2014 was a pivotal year for Kendrick and musically I feel like that’s when his mental health awareness was slowly opening up. I feel like the world he uncovered at that time was too much for him to process and fathom. He didn’t know how to express the truths he’s uncovered yet connect with his roots in Compton. He felt like he had to wrap it up because he didn’t trust his pen. Kinda like how in a relationship we wrap it up( condoms) when we don’t trust our partner. After all his pen was just being his mirror and wanted him to heal from his damage. This cause strain in his relationship with his music; ie writers block. I feel like what drive this further is how SZA is even more personified and argues with Kendrick in the following interlude. This song is awesome because it takes us through Kendrick’s growth as a person and artist
@@RobMarkman Idk know how old you are but I'll be 42 in a week lol, I'm from the old school, 90's and 2000's era of hip hop, the best generation imo lol. So I definitely know whats up
Is beautiful to see how much Rob loves and respects Hip-Hop. You can see him getting excited and happy to go over every bar and analyse it. ❤️ I also love music and used to work in music journalism and I still do this with songs that I like. It never went away, it just makes me so happy. I spent most of weekend listening to and analysing every song This is a beautiful album.
Hey Rob!! Its much to talk about lately right? Loving it too! I agree with you thay Gloria is related...sonically to Father Time. My first listen though I felt that sort of King Los, A Boogie with Da Hoodie 'Drowing' vibe. The flow I mean. Overall...my hands down favorite just because its about his pen! The reason we all here talking about him. He precise with it!
It’s clearly written in a way to be romantic and with broad enough references that are about his relationship with Whitney too so I take it has dual meaning. Gemini mind
Nothing to do with Whitney. She wasn’t mentioned in “Man in the Garden” for a reason. I think he’s respectfully distancing himself from her since the battle.
Rob! - if you do a video for squabble up - “it’s a full moon, let the wolves out, I been a dog” probably a reference to For All The Dogs - love your videos - I go back pretty often and watch your TPAB interviews with Kendrick
I died laughing, picturing Dot sniffing markers 😂😂😂. But I def didn't think he was talking about a pen until the line "when you caught that body, & still wiggled through that sentence". Fire breakdown man 🔥🔥🔥
Thats why i love hiphop. This album will define my 2024 and i haven't even listened to this album yet. But you, the company man, Curtis king broke the album down beautifully. Waiting on the final episode with you six...
Hiiiiiii Rob I been knew you from many other platforms cuz we 30+ now growing with hiphop together but thank you for these videos SO MF MUCH!!!!!! YOU DOIN AMAZING!!!! you are a voice of the culture god bless 🙏🏽💘
@ hey I hope you watched & enjoyed the video for Squabble up just posted by Kendrick’s team. Thank you for your great analysis on these tracks for real. Making my Monday fly by 🚀🩵🙏🏽
📎 I subscribed to you , yes you’re right , the pen is powerful . I write poetry and I write on paper before I print it out , the pen is more satisfying to me than the cold soulessness of the keyboard , and I remember seeing that interview with you and Kendrick Lamar .👏🏾
Reincarnated could be Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, or Ma Rainey… I think the first verse could be John Lee Hooker or Robert Johnson inventor of the Blues. And just exploring ultimately getting caught and not being able to escape the same pitfalls that existed for African Americans during slavery but now as a free man or woman.
To me, this is Kendrick’s Makaveli/ God’s Son album. Both Pac at Nas were coming off historical rap battles and considered the winner. All three are past the battle, but still threw shots and let everyone know if they want it they could have it. At the same time all three of them have that song to show how much they love the game, that one big radio hit, a city tribute song. Personally Makaveli is my favorite Pac album and godson a top 3 album. This might end up a top 3 Dot album to me.
Rob....i wanted to be a member but I first saw this on my TV and couldn't find a way to join. Heads up cause maybe you aren't aware. Great breakdown btw..
Another dope breakdown with great analysis especially that Bitch I'm In The Club reference. Kendrick did a great job not spoiling the twist until the very end in my opinion unlike other songs of the same vein. Also I think it's clever making the pen feminine because his pen allows him to birth art like a woman with a womb could allow him to birth children aka bearing fruit in all senses.
A friend told me that Cole released right after dot, but got overshadowed. What are your thoughts and are you going to cover the “Warm Up” around this time too?
In order to understand the track “reincarnated “ you have to do research on Past Life Regression…which Kendrick points out he did before getting into the characters he talked about
on first listen, i thought it was interesting he asks his "girl" what her favorite movie is & guesses The Notebook.... i started to think he wasnt talking about whitney lol but then the last line made me go "ahhhhhhhh" after more listens i was thinking that his pen is also a double for his relationship with god. dot speaks on how he believes a lot of his raps are divine from an angel or god. so i looked up gloria religious meaning & it said: Glory (from the Latin gloria, "fame, renown") is used to describe the manifestation of God's presence as perceived by humans according to the Abrahamic religions.
you gotta talk about the last part of the hook!!! Gloria I want to take to Euphoria…..had he not experienced all those things to the past he would be at this point. Euphoria (the song) is the changing point or paradigm shift in the culture!
When he revealed it was about his Penn I was legitimately shocked I really believed it was about Whitney at least for the first 2 verses lol incredible song writing and intonations were on point and creative as always he really has a gift for public speaking
Love that it's about his pen and not his Whitney. Might just be me, but I don't dig calling your girl your b*tch. Especially how down to earth and loyal Whitney's been to KDot through the years. Loved the album. 8/10 for me and I'm sure there will be a part 2.
I feel “Gloria” has a better twist end than Common’s “I Used to Love Her”, as Common’s metaphors gave away the twist ending more overtly (I say this as a huge fan of that song).
Just a suggestion, to avoid copyright for playing the music, use the Acapella. Google how to remove music from songs to make acapellas. It would take your reviews to the next level imo ✊🏿

this is good!

Another Pulitzer price for this ☝🏾
He’s a writer, he masterfully used foreshadowing while simultaneously not giving away the payoff. He’s showing levels.

My favorite line that tied to the pen metaphor was when Kendrick said his girl’s favorite movie was The Notebook, lol.

"Da pen on me is your relief"
Super dope breakdown. You really walked us through it. I definitely appreciate these types of deep looks into the lyrics/story of songs

It’s hard to surprise me, but I was 🤯🤯 when he said “pen” and not “friend” at the end! 🔥
I still believe it’s about both Whitney and his pen, though!
Nothing to do with Whitney
Damn, I got the metaphor but you broke it down in such a refreshing way, I didn’t link it to actual experiences like you did.

Now I wonder if the Spanish singer (Deyra) we hear throughout the album is supposed to represent "Gloria".....🤔🤔 That'll be cold af!!!!
You caught a jewel with that Bitch I'm In the Club vs Faith reference thats very plausible
Im a fan of these kind of songs when rappers personiify hip hop or a gun or pen etc. Been done before but it was done great
A great breakdown like this adds so much to my experience when I go back and listen to the song!!

We can't forget that Spanish plays a big part in GNX, as well as LA. And Gloria is Spanish for Glory. Kendrick achieved glory through his pen.

The pay off at the end of Gloria is up there with J-Live’s “Them That’s Not” and Phonte’s verse on little brother “Whatever You say”.
