My friend had a 900cc Yugo 45 rust free from 1982, we got it to an unsafe 85 MPH. We would regulary cruise at 60 - 70 MPH without problems.
We did multiple 300 mile weekend trips with that red Yugo 45 all around Serbia. We only broke down once in Vrsac and we pushed it to a nearby mechanic who charged us 5$ to fix the ignition arm brushes. My friends grandfather still drives it and says it is the most reliable car that he ever owned. He also says it was made by his friend who worked in the factory and he made sure that it was built well.
The 80's versions have better metal quallity than the 90's versions and the versions from 2000's.
Also they dont have rev limiters, you can rev it to its death if you are not careful.

You talk about them breaking a lot and if you could daily a Yugo. I would bet a lot has to with the Yugo aging only because when I was a teenager I grew up with a girl near me who drove one. She daily it back in the late 80's and early 90's and she never seemed to have issues with hers. A hot chick driving a Yugo is a sight to be seen!
