    I shot this trip using the Cannon 7D still camera in full res HD video mode, mostly using a Cannon ESF 17-55 IS lens. The Cannon allowed me to travel light and hit HDR stills as well. I also had a Sennheiser pin mic under my headphone for audio. I edit using Sony Vegas, which I like because it started as a music program. I use it for editing and original music underscore. The air to air was shot from a Mooney J, with the baggage door off. Fun gig!

    What camera brand & model do you recommend for shooting night-flight video with an external-mic input for ATC?
    I shoot with a Nflightcam for daylight ops which records great but, not so well at night.

    Sadly that aircraft N850FR/N536EM crashed in Georgia south of KFFC, 11/5/2014 and was written off. Two occupants survived with minor injuries.

    • @robertmerkle6879
      @robertmerkle6879 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the conclusion of the report. If the pilot would have restarted the engine, he would NOT have crashed. Such professionalism.

    • @edwardsp1916
      @edwardsp1916 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Merkle The incident occurred because the aircraft was flown in a side slip condition for too long. The engine was starved of fuel. I wonder if the report has been updated as it states the engine would of kept running if the pilot returned coordinate flight sooner.

    Another great video. Not a single "service squawk" 12 hours after leaving the plant. It doesn't get any better than that. I liked the thumbs up by Leif Erikson too. :-)

    Can you fly trans-atlantic as a private pilot? or is their additional training and certification needed in order to do it.

    • @grahamarnott7924
      @grahamarnott7924 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You will need an instrument rating as a very minimum because you will no longer be flying VFR. You'd be a fool to try without experience, a night rating and special ditching/safety training though.

    • @mars2g
      @mars2g 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Graham Arnott Why wouldn't you be able to do it VFR?

    • @alphajet2145
      @alphajet2145 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      mars2g Agree you can do it VFR, the only downside is that you can't be sure that you'll stay VMC during 4 hours over northern atlantic.

    Beech 400 is a very different airplane, especially for fuel burn.

  • @CraigPeyton_EarthFlight

    That is a very hard shot. I used my 7d with auto ISO for low light, and use a tiny mic under my headphone, so I don't pick up audio bus noise. That said, the cannon is weak in audio, and sometimes helps to have a second recorder.

      CRAIG Peyton Didn't know that u can fly single engine aircraft across Atlantic ,thought u needed twin engine cuz with a single if u have engine failure u can't exactly glide to land !

      @@CraigPeyton_EarthFlight I know or used to know in Canadian aviation rules ,if you gotta fly over large bodies of water ( over 50/100 miles) you must have a multi engine rated licence and have twin engine aircraft! Single engine not permitted therefore no valid insurance if the plane were ever forced to ditch in the ocean!

    "Hadn't generated a single surface squark on our 12hr maiden voyage." What does that mean guys?
    Also, it only took you guys 12hrs flying time from Tarbes to New York? What was the total time with stop overs or refueling stops?
    Great vid by the way:-) How much, 'in the air' so to speak, will a new TBM850 cost these day?

    • @FarmerBeavis
      @FarmerBeavis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is. These crossings only happen because of delivery/transfer of the plane to a new owner

  • @planespotting7701
    @planespotting7701 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    They can't do this because even though the TBM is doing well as far as speed is regarded, payload is not great and overall performance is very lacking. Cabin noise is very high and although it is a fine aircraft, it could be better in almost every respect. Maybe their new TBM Century will perform better, it is said to have much m ore engine power, composite parts which would help with weight, and winglets which will help overall performance.. We are supposed to see it in early 2014.. Let's see.

    That takes a lot of courage to do a trans-atlantic flight with a single engine plane, because if you lose the engine, your a dead mother period, even if you survive the ditch, your in the middle of the freezing atlantic and it could take a while for them to find you if your transponder malfuntions as well!! I am just chicken shit of trans atlantic flights period. I'm a pilot and it bothers me and especially w/ a new plane that had 0 time on it. I love the 850 and pc-12 but going over the ocean?
