Full replay from the ExCeL - South Arena 1 as China's Sun Yujie defeats Korea's Shin A Lam to twin the women's individual fencing epee gold medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games (30 July 2012).
Fencing was included for the first time at the 1896 Games in Athens, and has remained on the Olympic programme since then. The women's fencing competition entered the Games in 1924 in Paris. Today, men and women compete in individual and team events, in which three types of weapon are used: foil, epee and sabre. The foil was, at first, the only weapon used by women, until the 1996 Games in Atlanta, when women's epee was introduced. Women's sabre appeared for the first time on the Olympic programme in Athens in 2004.

I agree that screaming doesn't violate any fencing etiquette (though it irritates me when my opponent screams aft every point). It certainly is a tactic to encourage oneself while discouraging/intimidating the opponent but it's also a natural reaction to the tension and pressure. I've fenced all 3 weapons and can say that out of them all, épée plays on my nerves the most.
Even though I am on the side of Sun but Shin got my respect since she was defeated unfairly in the semi-final and she got only 15 minutes to reconcentrate to the game.
Agreed, I think she was wronged on the biggest platform you can be wronged.
The way Sun smiled after her last touch was beautiful :) As for her screaming, I don't believe it to be a poor show of etiquette. As you fence, you hold in a lot of internal stress (calculating, moving through your own steps as well as your opponent) and honestly the screams are more of a joyous release of all of that tension than anything else.
yaa i agree
@@aestheticanna123 She won bronze in the Olympics. Who wouldn't scream?
I wish fencing was a lot more popular :(
Me too
Me too
I just love fencing now because of the K Drama that I watch called
Twenty Five Twenty One
There's a similar moment on that Drama that was somewhat you could tell that it's very similar scenario to Shin A Lam and Heidemam
But it's not a never ending second
But they were tie with scoring and then one of them had to score
And the protagonist won, but her opponent that time was her enemy and her idol and defending
Champion refuses to accept and starts to cry, she insists that she is faster and she hits 1st
You should watch that K Drama if your interested on
K Drama + Fencing
Amen
towards the end, you can tell shin was desperate for points. all sun had to do was wait for shin to come in, to be prepared and expect any attack. i love my sport 💗
wrong title - Sun won the bronze, not gold...please revise, Olympics people.
she did
the guy hit the timer with 00.03 seconds left fair and square
She won in team event for gold
Sun was so composed and deserved the bronze medal!!
Shin has my respect the whole way through. Think, she could have gone through to gold in the individual but lost because of the Heidemann scandal with the clock, then lost bronze because she was still upset and tired after the previous bout. Then her team lost the gold medal to China. So she could have won gold for both, but lost the chance for gold because the clocks didn’t count fractions of a second in a game that deals with fractions of a second, and her team couldn’t maintain the lead in the team match.
The gold winner is very tough to beat from Ukraine.
that's her style to express her happiness, don't misunderstand
this is semi, no finals!!!!! not for GOLD
Tania Nikitina you are right!
This is bronze medal match
This is bronze medal match lol
This is the bronze medal bout!
................I thought it was said in the beginning that it's a bronze medal bout.
It is bronze medal bout
8 years and they didn't correct the video title.
I don't know the specific rules, but it's so much fun to watch. It's so exciting. Fencers must have the strongest nerves ever.
Whoever gets poked first loses
Watching this before my tournament today
Same
Shin's hit at 4:40 has me on the floor 😨
the title hasnt changed in 8 years :/
This is not the finals!!! This is bronze medal match!!!!!!!!
1. Lam always attacked Sun's foot. That's ok. But in audience's opinion, this kind of attack is not as powerful as that of Sun;
2. Lam is not confident. She always hit her head and showed disappointment when she lost a point. It is not because of Sun's screaming. Actually, in the first two sections, Sun was far behind but looked confident.
3. Lam's performance was a little of chaotic. Especially in the last part of the game. So I think those are the reasons why Lam lost the game.
Also Sun was world no 1
that silly thing you keep doing to each other with the dancing is just a way to generate instability as a means of increasing agility like those experimental jets with the reverse-swept wings
both the soviets and the americans had one, but the american one was just a toy compared to the one the soviets made
I honestly came here for sort of that reason.
Está luta está SENSACIONAAAAAAL 😮😮😮😮😮😮 UHUUU VAI COREIAAA
This title already shows the inaptitude of the Olympic staff.
and if you have noticed, shin.a.l also screamed after every point but she didn't get off her mask, that's all
The judge has a lovely voice.
What's that music in the background? Sounds Familiar.
16:00
Whoa, pulling out that Requiem for a Dream/LOTR remix music
Wrong lol, this is the bronze medal match.
WOW, kay! The korean f encer was wearing dangly earings and the chinese one a watch, I'm just stunned that the regulations allowed that!
tears
This is the bronze medal match, not the Gold! Please, change the title!
Since when does Adidas make fencing gear
Certainly since I was a teenager. Head does not have a monopoly in that market, even though I prefer their products.
I was laughing so hard when they were booing the ref. But i feel sorry for them.
JOIN THE CLUB! We have T-shirts......wait.....no we don't :(
21:20 reeee
HAHHAHAHA
how many fleche he did?
Wooow
Lam screamed, too~ It's a way of encouraging. A number of athletes were not treated fairly in the 2012 Olympics. Actually, Korean athletes were brave that some of they gained what they deserved at last. But Chinese athletes always gave up their rights. It is the judges that should be blamed.
this is the bronze match
Gold medal?????????
hwaiting shin-ah~
so said that she lost that too
the soundtrack
Shin was distracted
On guard
Me when I win a sport in physical ed.

When the second hit happened before Sun should have done a duck stop lungs also I'm going to the British championships on Sunday and ik 10
Its because of the rules.
(coming from a sabre fencer)
How can anyone watch this? They just sit there bouncing up and down for 15 minutes.
Sccar3 sabre is over in a split second.
@Sccar3 Yes I agree! Sabre is much more exciting and personally I like it when bouts are short-- long bouts give me goosebumps from the tension and are too boring.
En Garde
I am so glad that I train fencing. Such beautiful sport but she is definately screaming too much. :(
Why I wanna Shin to win it (I am Chinese)
滚
RIPOSTE
What's the difference between foil and fencing?
Foil is a part of fencing. In fencing there are 3 types of weapon you can choose to fence with, namely the Foil , the Epee and the Sabre. 3 different playstyles and different rules govern these 3 different type of fencing.
@@irvintoh3087 ooooo.... thank you.
Sun Yujie's screaming after each point was such a bad show of sportsmanship. Regardless of the story behind the match, I couldn't pull for someone who bemoaned every point like that.
jackrabbit08 actually, this is something you see in fencing a lot, in all weapons and in both men and women. They’re not bemoaning anything. It’s a way to keep yourself pumped up and to release some of the tension that builds throughout the bout. I’ve screamed a few times myself while fencing some very close bouts. It’s a very normal thing to see in fencing.
The korean also scream but she never take off the helmet
You are full of hate!
