    Why is everyone criticizing this? Every sport has its less exciting moments, including most martial arts. Especially in sabre, although the rules encourage a rushed attack, there are rare parry-riposte moments which are magical. As for everyone with the 'medieval duellists turning in their graves' comments, it's quite hard to turn a match to the death into a sport.

The poor grammar belies your condescending tone and only serves to reassure me that my initial impressions of the situation was correct. Namely that only a fool would find the pathetic display of swordsmanship in these video's to be impressive.

      @robot3759 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      While previous replies are correct, I feel that a better explanation is in order for the people just stumbling across this comment.
      In sabre, the timer doesn't really mean much. The bouts are always to 15 with a one-minute break when either fencer reaches eight points. Since getting to those point thresholds usually doesn't take three minutes of fencing time, the timer doesn't see much use and is mainly regarded as a joke in sabre communities being only useful for measuring out the one-minute break at eight points. Timers do see use however in epee, in which the individual touches are longer and you have an actual chance of running out of time.

    • @rpsteele12

      Earl Schroeder besides Fencing doesn't emulate real combat anymore. Many of the techniques used in foil or epee or saber would be nonsensical to use in an actual swordfight

  • @davidian7787
    @davidian7787 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Mehh, should be called a whip dual.
    This has no relationship to sabre fighting at all, light blades may make you more effective but they should put a minimum weight and thickness on the swords. A sabre is a hefty cavalry weapon. What the hell is this? Coat hanger battle?
    I think it's a shame that the origins & history of the discipline have been lost for this lame excuse.

    • @dudeofvalor9294

      With the speed these fencers move at, and with the fact the sport is full contact, making the blade heavier is only going to cause more injuries than it already does.
      Fencing has adapted from traditional sword fighting, and is now it's own thing. It's origins are traced back to traditional fighting with swords, and the basics taught are still similar to that of traditional fighting (how to parry, stance, footwork etc etc).
      Now if you want to learn the art of fighting with a sword then Hema exists.
      However remember the need to kill/draw blood with a sword no longer exists, thus fighting with swords has evolved because of this.
      The sport still requires great mental strength, high endurance/fitness and excellent blade skills.

      Sabres aren't as light as the eppe of the foil, they're heavier than they look, the speed of these fencers are so quick that it creates a whipping motion on the sabre

    • @Pottan23

      Bregon Webb that I do not doubt, that doesn't change the fact that the first point in the Men's individual Foil gold medal match lasted longer than the first eight points in this match!
      There's just not enough tension in the saber matches for me, most of the points are both of them leaping forward hoping they initated the attack first.
      You most likely enjoy fencing on a deeper level than I do so I will just respectfully say that on the level I'm on, I enjoy watching Foil over the other two.

    This is one thing I dislike about fencing in the olympics. It's all about the attack, very little about the defense. Combat sport terms, most of these gold medal winners are dead. So many simultanious or near simultanious hits.
    Anyone know if there's a version of fencing where it needs to be a clear point in order to score? I'd be much more interested in seeing some more defensive styles.
