I think the bilge pump change was a good idea. Like you mentioned though. Getting your hands on a big "Oh my God we are going down" pump would be a very good idea. I know that leaky hose was aggravating, but from our perspective it was kind of comical to watch.

Seeing the holes in the discharge hose makes me think the suction hose may have as many holes, just not as easy to see since they would be intaking air as opposed to discharging water. Suction hose holes could have been a part of the original failure. I really like your approach to this mini-refit. Keep up the great spirit and good work.

Our freezer is the same as yours and we finally started storing stuff in large mesh bags that are identifiable by just looking at the string closures, so if we want frozen chicken breasts we just pull out the bag with the right color string, which we can find without unpacking. We also lined the freezer with thin silver plastic coated foam to add a bit more insulation and reflectivity to the freezer area. We keep our freezer near zero F when cruising and you could see condensation on the outside hull where the hull makes up the side of the freezer. Also as the freezer gets empty we add bottles of water (ice) at the bottom of the freezer to fill the dead space. This holds temp better than air and keeps the food higher up, ie, less freezer diving.

    • @timhardman4764
      @timhardman4764 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That was also my first thought....mesh bags labeled or different colors....contents of bags will conform to the fridge space so a lot more can fit in the fridge. Will still requiring a lot of unpacking of the mesh bags but so much easier than digging through individual items.

We also use 2 line reefing in the cockpit. We have “easily” reefed in 40+ knots without leaving the cockpit. Much safer, and quieter so communication between the two of us is easier. A little extra line in the cockpit is messy, but worth it. The previous owner must not have reefed in the cockpit, or maybe they didn’t even have the reefing lines installed. Or if the main isn’t original, maybe the reefing points are a bit higher and they never finished the install with longer lines. Who knows, but clearly this boat was primarily a fair weather, lightly used boat. Once you start using the pumps regularly they will last longer, or at least that’s how it seems on Merlin!

You are doing Great! Replacing hoses and pumps is all part of the "new boat refit". That diaphragm pump is much better for running dry! Good choice! I would stay away from that corrugated hose, they can not be trusted. In all pickup pumps, vacuum leaks often give a lot of problems. For the tools, I like to have multiple bags that are job orientierend, like for example your bag for electrics.

From the beginning with Atticus I, you have done a great job highlighting the fact that there are so many potential failure points in each "system" or component and they all have a limited lifetime, even with little usage. I admire your resilience and "can do" attitude when you discover, diagnose and then repair each item. I think that is one of the essential skill sets AND personality traits to be successful with full time cruising. Most of us home owners know all to well an easy DIY repair project typically includes 3 or 4 trips to the store (10 minutes from home) even though we have a big garage and basement for "spare parts" and tools storage. You admit the luxury of doing repairs on your boat while in the U.S. with stores close by, Amazon, lower prices and all the conveniences that are not available when cruising in many other areas off our mainland. Like you, with a new (20 yr old boat) I would want to personally disassemble, inspect, clean and replace all suspect parts in my Thru-Hulls & valves (how water can get into the boat) and all my Bilge Pumps including all hoses (how to get water out of the boat). When you get your high volume portable bilge pump will you have an energy source high above the water line? I've noticed in many of the catastrophic water ingress situations, even with the portable high volume pump, once the water level covers the batteries the pump becomes useless. A separate bank of lithium batteries (100 or 200 Amps) mounted high for powering the portable bilge pump would help me sleep better...especially crossing oceans. And it would be a good back up if the other battery bank had a massive failure. Keep up the great work and excellent story telling and video.

While potatoes are sensitive to ethylene gasses, the reason to keep onions and potatoes apart has to do with moisture. Both onions and potatoes release moisture, which can lead to faster spoiling. It's best to store them separately in an area that has good air flow, is dry and somewhat cool.

Two years from now, far far away, in a squall, at night, with a weak flashlight, boat rolling and pitching, you will be so happy that you've been through all these hoses, pumps, and wires. You know where the lines lead, where the moving parts are, where the motors are grounded(!!!) and which hoses are new. Little by little you becoming da main man for all things Atticus. Pardon, da main couple. So much better to see it all at the dock now than to wonder where the hoses are on that dark squally night. But I bet that was your plan all along.

G'day Desiree, I made the mistake of keeping my fruits and veggies in plastic or rubber containers while on passage, and unfortunately, the produce spoils much faster. Plastic or rubber, also holds in humidity ~ obviously, not good. Get yourself a fruit hammock to hang produce, plus it's vented, along with either wicker or straw woven baskets, if possible! The produce will last longer, and fresh air can pass through; keeping everything dry.

I've been watching your channel for the last 2 years and can't say enough about how great it is, great balance between adventure and problem solving. Looking forward to seeing you guys sailing again soon. FYI might want to rethink storing the potatoes with the onions, this will cause the potatoes to rot sooner.

I love having different bags for the various tools. I split mine up between four bags but a little different: electrical, rigging, engine and general/all purpose tools. The general one has around the outside pockets all the things I want regularly without pulling the whole bag out as well, and that helps a ton (screwdriver with multiple bits, pliers, needle nose pliers, tape measures, wire snips, and wire brush). I find myself doing quick fixes more often if I don’t need to pull out the full bag.
Laughed SO hard at that hose springing leaks. Gotta be one of the best shots I’ve seen in a long time.

I'm in the process of moving aboard my Shannon 38 to live full time and just spent a few days sorting out storage space. This video is extremely helpful. Excellent work!

Surprised you didn’t show the “money shot” of the bilge water exiting the through hull. I always find that satisfying. The proof the system works

Great work Jordan and Des, Looking great.
Anything that age that is NOT being used for what you are intending use it for is bound to have lots of kinks and small problems.
I hate to see all the negativity, but please do not take it personally, its your lives on the line, not your viewership! Do what you gotta do to be safe out there.
I always end up learning so much from you two and i look at you both as MY Pardies!
Love you guys, keep up the great work, its so good to see you happy and enjoying your new boat. 🍻

Can't quit saying it, but what a beautiful boat can't wait to see you sailing her and your first ocean crossing! Great call Jordan a rebuild kit for a pump is cheap and when you don't know just rebuild or replace it. Don't want to be in an emergency situation and guessing about an issue!

Nice Video! Thanks for sharing! People do not realize how ,many pumps are on a boat. I have a 47' power cruiser. I counted and have 53 pumps on my boat. Yes! you are always dealing with a pump issue.

These are the types of episodes I watch and the reason I became a paid patron on your vlog. Most excellent!
I was out yesterday racing on a friends Hanse in Herrington Bay, followed by an overnight on my sailboat in the marina. The reasons why we work hard resolving sailboat problems/issues so we can enjoy the sunset with a beer. BTW, I'm going to follow your beer storage idea on my boat.
