The parts that SUCK... | S06E24

  • What is it that draws us to sail offshore? Is it calm waters, starry nights, and beautiful sunsets?
And is all of this ruined by seasickness, rough seas and lack of sleep? Or are the parts that suck actually the most essential to why we keep coming back?

Years ago I was in the US Navy and then the merchant marines. I remember countless times seeing sailboats going in and out of harbors and even in the middle of the ocean. I always had this yearning to want to know their stories. Thank you for providing that in your videos.

Navy here also. I remember the time I visited the Perth Royal Yacht Club, where America's Cup had just been taken from the Yanks after many, many years of dominance (1984). I met a lone sailor and his dog who made an annual pilgrimage from Alaska to the South Pacific where he would sell personalized scrimshaw of other sailboats and such, on Walrus tusk that he traded for in Alaska. What an interesting character... and talented too.

Navy 85-95, and current merchant marine. My dream is to retire on a sailboat, but unfortunately my wife isn’t on board with that. So I have to live vicariously through videos like this and Uma and Delos. It keeps me sane.

If I may... Now at 62 yrs young, I can honestly say that I agree 100% with your closing comment Sir. But I may also add, It's true for all phases as without the parts that suck, the good stuff would have no value... Thanks for all you both do and how you share your souls and private thoughts with us all.

When I see the nature of east North America it makes me think of the first people sailing these waters. What were they thinking? No maps, no GPS - just nature. It must have been an experience of a lifetime.

This one struck such a chord with me. You guys have come so far and learned so much since you dragged anchor in Isla Mujeres. You are decades younger than us, but you two (three now with Osso) are inspirations to us. We will keep our eyes open for Atticus 2 in every anchorage we stop in!

I really liked this episode as it has lots of real sailing. I have been crew on a 40' ketch that left the Virginia capes offshore up to Delaware Bay and remember seeing Ocean City lights then the miserable time in the Delaware Bay Channel with a 30 knot following wind keeping that big ketch in the channel until we tied up at the restaurant mid c and d canal and had dinner then left the next morning for Annapolis. I spent 20 years sailing our 35' sailboat on Ches Bay and Annapolis was a favorite destination. Thank you for such good photography and the commentary showing the stresses of a passage and such good sailing video work. Good job both of you. Your boat has the chops to go anywhere when you add the solar component.

IJust met Jordan and his dad at a small Marina here on the IBX,I was star struck! I was stuttering and couldn’t remember a single fact about Project Atticus.Way cool fact though, I was one of the first truckloads of “Stuff” from pacific sea craft, Fullerton, when they moved here to Washington NC.I have long been a fan of the Crealock man!I met him 10 15 years ago I asked him why the canoe stern,he smiled and said “why not”?I think he was tired of being asked that! Jordan your tech videos are awesome, second to no-one in my opinion.Way cool Jordan thanks to you and your dad taking time standing in the cold to chat.

Some forty plus years ago, while sailing with a captain who now resides on the Sassafras river, I learned about “paying your dues…”. He always reminded me that to reach those highs you had to pay your dues with lows, and I have found truth in it. Work through those lows and highs will be worth every minute. Fair winds.

But that’s not realistic and we’re not here to cuss out the old while ignoring the good. Keep doing what ur doing with quality purpose and we’ll keep pressing on and reading ur blogs!

Coastal sailing sucks! For me passages start getting good on about the third day out of sight of land. Fewer worries about getting run over by shipping, no hard things for the keel to bump into, and that lovely long ocean swell has replaced the tidal confusion that land's proximity brings. And best of all I've settled into a watch keeping four on, four off schedule that let's me sleep like a baby. I find it impossible to sleep in a motel bed with a swamp cooler running in the window or a fancy New York hotel with gunfire and sirens outside. But pounding through the Gulf Stream being levitated by every passing wave--- no problem. When I moved ashore after living aboard for seven years it was six months before I could get a proper night's sleep on land.
Atticus belongs on the open ocean. Listen to her!

Its actually more visible to other vessels then the smaller previous Atticus which must provide more safety knowing you will be seen easier during passages. Awesome video and most excellent words and insights! We made the journey from the Chesapeake Bay to Long Island Sound and back for the first time earlier this summer. It was fantastic to see some of the highlights we experienced through the C&D Canal and the Delaware Bay. You’ve inspired us to try an overnight passage when we go up again next year - most likely from Cape May to Block Island. We’ll then take our time heading back down the LIS on our way back to the Chesapeake. Hope the continued work on Atticus 2 is going exceptionally well!!!

Two weeks ago we left Niantic CT headed for Bermuda. We also encountered challenging conditions once we were past Block Island with 35 to 40 knot winds and 6 to 15 foot swells as we headed out into the North Atlantic. Fortunately, we were on a 88" Sparkman Stephens ketch. I was sailing with Bo Higginbottham, someone Desire sailed with along with Ryan Rayfield a couple of years ago.

Nice episode! Loved the philosophical observations you made regarding a balance between comfort and suffering. We all try so hard to avoid the suffering yet in retrospect it is always the most memorable in a somewhat positive kind of way. Perhaps it is a reflection on our endurance to get through it that gives us a sense of pride resulting in a positive take on the experience. Sailing definitely swings you through that range between Bliss and Defeat (sometimes terror).

While I have enjoyed the re-build videos, this was the meat I love from you two (and Oso). This video especially as it brought me back into my minds eyes of the past. You cruised right through where I spent many of my formative years sailing. You may not have noticed a small river on the Chesapeake Bay side of the canal called the Bohemia River. It feeds into the Elk and my small cruising boat was docked in a marina just a mile from the entrance. She was Chrysler 22, swing keel named Miss Molly (as in Good Golly) that I took on trips down the Bay as far as St. Micheal's.
I never off-shored, but one trip down the bay gave me that feel. I had left an anchorage just above Annapolis (placed called Ride out Creek), and the forecast indicated champagne sailing to St. Michaels. Before getting into the bay I had already hoisted a full main and my 155%. At first me and this spirited C22 was just hauling the mail but as the wind picked up (northeaster, low clouds) I had a following sea and what became too much sail. I was solo, young and still learning and to make matters worse, I had water entering the boat from the rudder fitting. A cracked had developed.
There was this one moment when I looked behind me at waves at my shoulder height with caps, feeling the boat dance and surf before rolling down the back side of the wave. A hollow rudder post, water would shoot up through it as she surfed...it was a wild ride. At some point I needed to get that genny down so I held on till the entrance to Eastern Bay, Bloody point. I turned Molly into the wind, fisted that 155 on the deck swapped in an 80% and put a reef in the main. Going up Eastern was going straight into the maelstrom that was now blowing 20-25 with gusts.
I can't remember how many tacks I did, but I do remember the moment when I stopped being scared and just enjoyed the ride. A yacht was coming down the bay and as I crossed her stern there was a man sitting cool as can be sipping coffee in a sweater. I was soaked, cold, tired....but I embraced that moment and the struggle for as much as I wanted to be on that yacht, I more needed to finish this passage. I arrived in a small cove just outside St. Michaels where I met my friend who'd been sailing in his Catalina 25. As he described my arrival I looked like shit, the boat was a mess, at least 6 inches of water inside, but I had the biggest grin on my face. That day I found my inner acceptance of life.
So yes, all those points you sailed past, god, they carry memories and thank you.

Great dialogue at the end. Agree completely. I would say sailing in general offers some degree of perspective, even just coastal cruising. If you do it enough you'll have those moments that suck - too windy, too cold, too wet, too wavy, the furling jammed, the forestay broke, etc. Those moments bring perspective to the times you really savor. To enjoy life one must experience life.

For many of us, your video's are memory triggers. Adventures we've had, troubles and triumphs.....the smell of the ocean, splash and spray of the waves, the motion and sounds on the boat. I know I am not the only "body locked" sailor forced ashore and when I can watch your videos I do remember my times in the rise of the sun. So very much so agree with your closing statements. It’s the struggle that sometimes becomes the most profound (and meaningful) part of the journey.

Ginger-gum is easy to find and stash in pockets. Dried ginger is not as portable but settles the tummy really well.

What a great episode! Quite philosophical as well. And I got to admit, I was skeptical at first, but Oso is like the perfect boat dog.

I've been working full time and going to school full time and I'm finally graduating in January. Currently writing a paper for my last class and it is absolutely one of the parts that suck. I'm glad I watched this video, though. It's nice to be reminded that, as much as I hate doing this stuff and I'd rather be doing something comfortable, it's going to be worth it.

So happy to see you guys on the move. Like learning how to fly, sailing is complicated and to stay safe you have to have a deep knowledge of your craft. Rosie and I are looking forward very soon to travel all across the country to our winter haunts in western Arizona. We will pilot our 35 ft. fifth wheel. I am looking forward to the journey. We will celebrate our 51st anniversary then have an early Christmas with Kids and Grandkids and then head out. Good luck at the boat show. Burlington Bill here of the theme song ( for now ) of Sailing into Freedom!

Thank you for sharing that the cruising life isn't just smooth water and cold drinks on the beach. Seeing the tough times makes these videos learning moments for your viewers as well. It's all part of a life well lived. Kudos.

I guess it's the uncertainty and the variety of things you can see offshore that make you want more. No two passages are the same, ever.
