      Thanks, I was thinking it was older than that. I know Gibson did some funky stuff with their serial numbers in the 1960s and 70s making some of their guitars difficult to date.

    For some reason and speaking strictly as a guitar-maker and repairman for years I have seen countless butcherized SG's on my workbench with many of these being in worse shape than this one...
    For some reason Les Pauls, 335's, Flying V's, Explorers, Firebirds, etc... are rarely messed with but it's okay to mess up with SG's... Maybe it's because they're more affordable and less luxurious than Les Pauls so it's no big deal 😄😄
    Anyway, I'm glad to see that nice SG restored and back in all of its glory...
    I was especially impressed with your work with the serial number...

      There is only one, real story - a stinking, drunk redneck ( a wanna be musician ) from a stinking bar, with his dirty hands mishandled, mistreated, neglected the musical instrument. The end of "stories" ! Shameful, dirty bustard ! Not a real, respect deserved musician ! Period !

      I refinished my one piece SG Custom after dowelling the Bridge support holes that were about 1/4 inch big and stripped out were replaced by a flat piece of aluminum to hold the Bridge in place.
      The quality of Mahogany varies from one year to another, but I was so impressed with the colors and textures of the wood that I put 30 coats of Tung Oil on it, and it reveals the grain of the wood along with the nice red and Yellow colors of the Mid 1970's wood that was available.

      @@geraldhills41 I would have just lightly sanded it, especially where the paint was peeling, and then put a matte sealer on it. The electronics would all be replaced, of course, but I like the road-worn look when it’s real.

    • @okbouncer24
      @okbouncer24 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThatGuy-y2c I get that. However, he is the one who wore it out. It's his story that guitar tells. Nobody else's. Makes no sense for anybody else to play it because of that. I don't understand custom shop guitars as well. Why take a perfectly new guitar and beat it up and make it look old just because you want it to look like Willie Nelson's guitar? Why not buy a new one and create your own story. Just because a guitar has been beaten up and not taken care of does not mean you should leave it that way. Restore it and give it a new life and let someone create a new story on top of the story that already exist? That's just me. I would never want to play an ugly instrument.

    One constructive criticism: That guitar had some type of Lyre Vibrola unit on it, originally. That is what all of the holes were for. You missed the opportunity to re-install that. I love your channel, and you do excellent work, overall. I just prefer turning a guitar 100% back to stock. Keep up the good work!!

      With the number of holes it had, I'm thinking it had something like a Bigby installed at some point. I'm sure you're right that it had the Gibson vibrato system originally or something similar. They are notorious for not staying in tune and many of them were removed and replaced, when the guitars weren't that valuable. 😅

    I think he did a fairly masterful job on the restoration, my only problem is how he did the paint, if the original tamed the grain, he should have not relied on can spray fixes, to tame the grain, he should have got the appropriate primer, and then raise the grain, sanding it between coats until you don't see the grain anymore, and then apply his final stage of paint, though I do like the color!
    I wonder what year that old SG was?
