Does this affect the water resistance from the material? I’ve seen people that have washed their kankens in the laundry machine and their bags absorb all the water
I don't think it should with a handwash. You shouldn't put it in the washing machine though, that is specified on the tag of the bag when you buy it!

I do mine on a cool machine handwash with wool detergent, much easier.

Not under running water no. I just rinsed with a semi wet cloth :) Not sure how well it would turn out if I completely had soaked it

Late comment - but rewax it and might be good again.
Just put it in the washing machine, cool wash, gentle soap - not detergent. Does fine. I've done it loads of times.

No not at all :) You just have to be gentle and not leave it out in the sun

i put mine in a washing machine in a pillowcase inside out on delicate, no fading but u might have to re waterproof it if you do end up machine washing it. but if you aren’t worried about the water proofing it’s more of a risk with lighter colors and if it would fade
