    Unless I missed it i didn't hear any mention of the DGO sensor which by all accounts is giving the c70 a better dynamic range and a cleaner image at most ISOs (other than really high ones where obviously the Sony comes into it's own. Given that that is being punted as the camera's stand out feature it seems incomplete to miss it out

    I'm a Canon user and haven't used Sony cameras, but in my opinion, both brands are excellent.
    Sony has made a lot of advancements, their color and autofocus have dramatically improved and I'm glad Sony users are benefiting from such great cameras.
    And I love what Canon is doing with the C70, and hopefully with the rumored C50 and C90 as well.

    Something to consider that people seem to have forgotten is that the C70 only records in Long-Gop for anything above 30p whereas the fx6 records All-I up right the way through, that's how the C70 can get away with only using SD cards. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

      Really good point. I'm not certain either, is that the case it or does it only offer h265, which is the higher bit rate than long-gop while being more economical of file file and allowing SD cards? I actually don't like h265 when there is a lot of movement on screen

    Things that stands out for me on the FX6 is the variable NDs, insane high ISO performance, 240fps and the monitor can be mounted anywhere. C70 for me is just the Canon colours that I am used to and still prefer. Which will I buy? Neither. Will use my old Canon cinema gear I have right now until Canon gets more things right like Sony did. It's not like buying new gear will make me more money.

    Stripping audio off the FX6 body was silly, but a nice workaround would be to use the Atomos in place of FX6's stock screen, and have audio going directly into Atomos. RAW recording and high rez audio. It can still be mounted to the body somewhere so as not to tug on your gimbal motors, but in a place that's more advantageous to the balance of your rig.

    Hello Matt, great video as always! I’m giving you some thoughts about your points in the video.
    As a wedding filmmaker how can you work with the fx6 on a gimbal ? There are no sound inputs on the body, you passed that very very fast! This is 100% a dealbreaker!!
    Secondly to work with the FX6 on a gimbal you need to remove so many things from it that takes time and for sure will make you loose moments on the wedding day while with the c70 you can shoot handheld or on a monopod and immediately as it is put it on a gimbal without removing anything.
    C70 has EIS and almost every RF lens has IS , there is no way to stabilise the FX6 other than gyroscopic data that will make you firstly raise the shutter speed and loose the motion blur and secondly add one more step in post production.
    C70 has the same sensor as the C300iii and we all have seen the dynamic range comparison between the C300iii and FX9.
    C300iii was the clear winner.
    While s-cinetone has better colors than Slog3 you are limiting your self to 12 stops of dynamic range.
    Clog2 on the other hand has great skin tones and dynamic range.
    I’ll give AF to Sony with a big but, there is not object tracking on the FX6 which is super important when you want to track something other than a face or an eye.
    C70 has it.
    Sony is of course the lowlight king there is no question about it as C70 is useable at up to 12.800iso.
    Last but not least FX6’s menu is a disaster and from what I have seen from Philip’s bloom video is not user friendly at all.. many will prefer the A7S3 because of that.
    I’m not against the points you made, FX6 is a really great camera but it’s not that easy to recommend it over the C70 for a wedding filmmaker.
    Thanks 🙏

    • @andreaadriani5658
      @andreaadriani5658 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I couldn't agree more with you! I would also like to add a couple of things:
      • Most of the G master lenses are not stabilised at all, while most of RF lenses have 5 axis stabilisation and in the C70 you can even stabilise a prime lenses that doesn't communicate with the camera indicating the lenses you are using in the menu (like in the C300mkIII or any alpha camera). This is a complete game changer for hand held shooting (and I think everyone interested in a compact cinema cam is planning to shoot handheld quite often).
      • Another thing to consider is that maybe in US there isn't a big difference in price but here in Europe the FX6 costs 1200€ more than the Canon (around 1500 dollars).
      I think the C70 is a better option for most of the purposes except if you're planning to work on a set environment only and you need RAW.

    I've had a lot of experience with the Canon c300mkii and a little experience with the Sony Fs7. I can't stand using the Fs7. I feel like I'm fighting the camera at all times, because I'm not using it the way they want me to. Canon lets me adjust any settings on the fly, whereas Sony forces me to either use one of 3 ISO and White-balance presets, leave it on Auto, or dive deep into the menus to adjust my presets. The ISO work-around seems to be just to set it really high and use ND to compensate. Even just changing color-profiles is kind of a pain. It's not a huge deal-breaker but it feels really clunky, un-intuitive, and certainly not user-friendly. Based on my experience, I REALLY don't understand why people use Sony cinema cameras for run-and-gun shoots aside from the auto-focus. I would rather use a Canon camera any day, and for that reason alone, I'm going C70. They're close enough in specs, price, and footage quality, that for me, ease of use and color-space becomes the deciding factor.

    One BIG compelling reason for me is the RF lenses. I like to split my photo/video image taking in to two different systems. The Full Frame Canon R5 manages the Photo side and the Canon C70 can handle the video side with aplomb. With the RF mount on both that is a HUGE win in image quality. The RF lenses are stellar.

      @vladimirtalijan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not just touch screen enabled, but Canons touch tracking is working properly unlike Sonys, and that's much more important than eyeAF people like to talk about :) Btw, you don't need C100 or C200 replacement, C70 is replacing both, it has fixed everything wrong with the C200, 422/10, high framerates, almost instant power on/media browser, lighter but still hefty and much better in your hands, battery life is back to C100 numbers, multiple codecs and a bunch of dual card recording options, even menus and ergonomics are better, you can now program one of the wheels on the back to directly change Kelvin values using your thumb, it's bonkers, no camera has that. It has multiple buttons on and around the grip, so you can put your AF options, high framerates and many things all on your fingertips. I've switched from C200 to C70 and everything is much better, even the colors, DR is better, this is the ultimate run'n'gun, event, wedding, corporate, music videos, gimbal/steadicam camera. As for the viewfinder, the LCD is great and precise, and with a simple $100 LCD loupe (LCDVF) you get the largest and the best viewfinder in the world.

The biggest difference now, and will continue to become even greater, is the complete lack of a decent AF system. With Sony and Canon bringing advanced tracking algorithms to the table, it's near impossible to justify a manual camera in 2020 - especially as a solo shooter. It's definitely a tool and not a magic bullet, but listen to the people who have reviewed the FX6 in person. They almost all say things like "I can trust it to pull focus for me at f/1.4 while I'm flying around someone's face on a gimbal." That takes a deep amount of research and AI tuning to develop that BM just doesn't have (and I can't imagine they will anytime soon). Same goes for the RED, to be honest. A speedbooster does not make a camera full-frame. It's close but the full-frame sensor will always render images slightly differently. A lens adaptor is really just giving you a wider, faster lens. Also forgetting to mention the DGO sensor is a big omission.

  • @navireljan1857
    @navireljan1857 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This comparison is definitely unfair. You forgot to mention menu system on both camera's (worse on Sony so it's much more hassle) and the DGO advantage over the Dual native ISO which would give points to the Canon. Also the canon's design on C70 is to put all the accessories on one body that's why all is attached and it's not really a disadvantage given thou to Sony body without the Mic input on the body is a huge drawback because it defeats the purpose of being compact if you just have accessories bolding out of the camera. I disagree when you said that Canon has fewer lens options. Since it's super 35, you have traditional cine lenses dedicated to super 35 so you can use them to adapt on canon's while Sony cannot take super 35 lenses and would have vignetting. I understand that yes with these amazing Sony features but you focused on those too too much that's why I just want to give a chance to Canon. I love that canon Cinema line has now going to the compact mirrorless world and this camera is not as crippled as those Canon R line up. I just cant stand that this review is just way too much Sony biased.

      This is correct, from what I understand. You can’t use the touch screen on the Fx-6 to “touch” a subject on the screen that it will then follow. You can do this with the C70. Philip Bloom shows this in his review of the Sony.

    I am on the horns of dilemma. I just canceled my C70 backorder to give me more time to think about this purchase. This is going to be my first cinema camera and I would like to get something that will survive the test of time and something that I can build off of. So, I have two questions.
    1) Is there a lens adapter for EF lenses for FX6 that works as though it's native to the body? I only have EF glass at this point and am reluctant to start buying more expensive glass.
    2). I plan on using this camera for everything, my main camera and for b-roll. I plan on using this for everything from short films, to commercials, to travel, to music videos. Which do you think will be the better option as an all encompassing body?

  • @makatron
    @makatron 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly I'd go for the FX6 for the sensor alone. Whilst the speed booster would give the C70 the full frame FoV, its sensor still has smaller photosites and then you're limited by laws of physics. Still if you're already invested in the Canon camp then go for it but besides the audio located in the top handle I can't find anything else that bothers me about that camera, specially since the FS5 had one in the body and another in the top handle.

    Thanks for the specs comparison of the two cameras. In my opinion, besides the ones you mentioned already. From an overall convenience point of view, if audio recording is important in all situations, and also if the user is a solo-shooter, than the C70 looks to be the better choice. The FX6 is made for more of a production team type where every role is separated. It is truly a cheaper but not much stripped off FX9.

    Called it both times when canon announces the R5/R6 and with the C70!!.. Canons in trouble serious serious trouble!.. really really sure 95% of people who only need the best mirrorless format video centric camera will pick the A7S3... And now 95% of users who want a cinema camera that doesnt quite push to 6k down sampling and doesn't require full TV format implementation and mainly shoots documantarys, commercials, weddings etc will pick the FX-6 also because sonys massive library of lenses..... When Sony releases the A7IV that's really going to hammer the crap out of Canon.. they have no answers for Sony... Truely Beleive the A7IV could push canon to the brink of bankruptcy!..... The FX-6 effectively makes the canon C300 redudant... Why would 95% of people spend £11k on it when you can buy the FX-6 for £5500 British pounds so literally half for something that can do everything the same as the C300 but has a full frame, plus can do better slow motion and and has better low light capabilities hands down!!. Canon is fxcked!!!.

    Love your videos Mat. In my opinion the best reason to choose the Canon is the rf mount and glass. The rf glass is class leading and the mount allows for more sensor movement for IBIS and a greater amount of crop for post/processed stabilisation.
    It seems to me that all / most of the advantages of the A7Siii are firmware orientated, which would make them achievable for any piece of capable hardware

    I mentioned this on the Gerald Undone review, and its very apparent here. He didn't compare the image comparison. The C70 resolves a better 10bit image IMO, this is due to borrowing the sensor from the c300mkii, whilst the fx6 has the same sensor as the a7siii, both very amazing sensors. But whether its the dynamic range, or the colors SooC, the C70 looks better in footage ive seen across the internet. Was hoping for a more in depth comparison of this.

    Even with the EF-EOS adapter on the C70 (for $600 more!), it's still a smaller sensor. It's not really full frame, only the field of view. Autofocus also suffers big time with this adapter. RF lenses are also way more expensive than Sony glass options. The Sony Variable ND is magic and the biggest reason to get the Sony in addition to way more bitrate recording options.

  • @scottr3299

    I’ll add that the FX 6 can only shoot 2K when in Super35/APS-C crop, and the C70 doesn’t have SDI-out. Those are dealbreakers for me. Neither would be a good studio-style cinema camera.

  • @TerraThink
    @TerraThink 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wish the C70 had the following two things:
    - Full-frame sensor
    - Electronic ND-filter
    I'm convinced a full-frame equivalent is coming next year (probably C90) but electronic ND might be patented by Sony (not sure).

    • @vladimirtalijan
      @vladimirtalijan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having Super35 with a speedbooster option is much better for multiple things. You can use Super35 glass which is the majority of cinema lenses, you can use stills crop lenses, and also you have more reach when you need it, it's just more versatile. And for the eND, I already said it, but 7 stops of ND is not enough for anything larger than f2.8 lenses on a sunny day, or even any daylight/snow covered exterior. So if you want to use primes, and everyone should do that, FX6 is just a camera without the internal NDs. C70 has 10 stops and you can even use f1.0 lenses with that. ISO changes are gradual anyway so you can have similar effect but with 10 stops of ND. It also has AutoISO for the first time in Cinema EOS camera, and it has plugin power for 3.5mm and now every microphone works to the smallest ones.

    • @TerraThink
      @TerraThink 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vladimirtalijan You make good points.
      But we also want to use the new RF lenses without a crop. With the super 35 crop, there's currently nothing wider than 24mm.
      And low-light performance suffers from the small sensor.
      So while you might be right in that the electronic 7 stops ND isn't enough for prime lenses, we still need a full-frame sensor at some point.
      Canon already have it in their C500 (but for EF, not RF).

    • @vladimirtalijan
      @vladimirtalijan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TerraThink Yeah, but RF lenses are much better than anything Sony has, Sony lenses should be compared to the EF ones, which are still better, with much better choice and less money, so that should be the comparison. Also, I like EF lenses more, they have a mechanical focus ring which is much better than fly by wire. There is no perfect camera but C70 is much closer to it than FX6.

    Matt the legend :) There are more things to clear up, but one is very important and obvious for me, but seems like almost no one is realizing that 7 stop NDs are not enough for anything larger than f2.8, so if you use primes, and you should, you still need to have NDs like you don't have eNDs at all. You need at least 10 stops for primes and guess who has it :)

  • @biscuitsalive
    @biscuitsalive 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What you said about the c70 AF with the speed booster/adaptor. That makes no sense.
    The booster is just another lens along with the multiple lenses in the main lens.
    It shouldn’t make any difference at all to the AF performance. (As long as the adapted lens and camera are communicating ok, and the Focus motors are fast and responsive.)
    I think there maybe some mixup on that point.
    Great vid otherwise.

I just always prefer to not use adapters because they do have an effect on the image. To me the extra reach you get from the super 35 sensor is convenient and more versatile.
