    Who is your favorite NON Bender from Avatar?

  • @elvellarambles9151
    @elvellarambles9151 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1205

    Oh, I'd go even farther than that: I 100% believe she's an untrained airbender.
    She's more than just 'lightfooted' -- look at the height of all her jumps! Nobody but Aang can jump that high. She wasn't just in the circus -- she was a trapeze performer in specific, and the brief glimpse we got of her at work implies that she's normally quite comfortable in midair. Her fighting style seems to emphasize speed and evasion, like Aang's does, and rather than aggression like Azula's or Mai's.
    So yeah, Aang might have been the last actual survivor of the Air Nomads as they were before the, um, genocide, but I'm sure there are other untrained airbenders with refugee ancestry that just ... didn't turn up in canon often.

      Not to mention that air-bending could be horrifying if applied lethally. Creating and manipulating vacuums and pressure waves would be no joke and when added to her already impressive maneuverability she could practically fly.
      And don't get me started on gale-force wind in opposing directions that, while not sharp as anime typically depicts it, could likely tear apart anything we've seen in the given world.

      @@Draiocht012 Air bending is probably the most dangerous of all the elements in the show.... there is basically unlimited air and you can never run out of it... while even firebenders can run out of energy for their firebending given enough time as the energy comes from within them but is still used up... airbending however is completely unlimited...
      Its a good thing that the airbenders are basically pacifists that avoid fighting at all costs otherwise they would be a threat far worse than the fire nation.

    Tenzin, Aang's airbending son, married Ty Lee's daughter Pema. Her having any kind of airbending in her blood could help explain why all her children are airbenders with great power. Even Aang struggled to get an airbending child. It just makes sense.

    This actually would explain the Korra series too.
    In the legend of Korra, a bunch of people are suddenly able to airbend after a spiritual occurrence.
    The people who are able to suddenly airbend seem to be random in the show, without any pattern.
    But if you think about it, Bumi, Avatar Aangs first non-bender son, gets airbending. What are the odds of him, specifically him getting airbending. The answer is really really high!
    He carries the genetic marker of an Airbender, and the spiritual occurrence triggered his bending.
    That would mean for all other people in the world who obtained airbending, they would have carried the genetic marker for an Airbender too by ancestry, making the whole deal way less random, but actually quite clever.
    This would also mean that there were in fact a lot of survivors after the initial attack.
    That, or the airnomads were really into interracial reproduction.

    I thought from the thumbnail you were going to mention Tenzin's daughter, Jinora, which also has an uncanny resemblance to Ty Lee. In any case, I do agree that there could have been Air nomads surviving the genocide of their culture, mostly hiding in the earth nation because, well, it is huge and have some safe spots that resisted the 100 years of war, but some could also hid on the north and south pole, and even in the fire nation. It is also possible that Ty Lee's airbender ancestors married into the fire nation before the war started, so even if her ancestry is known, nobody would suspect or see her in a bad light. Also, in LoK, the new air benders could be the descendants of the surviving air nomads, with their bending reawakening due to the harmonic convergence.

    Other than her “Air Nomad” style, she’s really strong, flexible, and agile. Plus she introduced us to chi-blocking - which makes her the unique person she is. She even made Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors better - another reason why she should be considered the strongest non-bender.

Then you have where both Katara and Aang produce one child without the ability to bend, then Zuko's mother was never shown to have bending abilities, but both her children were benders. There's no good explanation for this other than multiple factors are needed not only to determine if someone is a bender, but also how types of bendings interact genetically. It should be pointed out that until Aang and Katara had children there are no known (to us) incidences of mixed bender relations/children.

      Had to do a double-take at the HP-reference you gave there. They just call people who can't bend, non-benders but that was cool. Squibs. Haha.
      I do want to point out that, from knowing the history of the avatar universe, we can pretty much understand why there wasn't much of a distinction or discrimination between the benders and non-benders until Korra's era. The history of humans on avatar universe show us that people didn't use to have such powers. Rather, it was given to them by spirits (or was it spiritgods). So there is a certain awareness that, if you were born a bender, you should be grateful because you were "chosen by the spirits or whatever" and it's not like in HP where it's like, "Unless you are a powerful witch or wizard, you are a disgrace!" - at least to blood-purist families.
      And, anyway, in HP universe, the history of mankind and muggle-kind is just practically erased to the point where we cannot identify why some humans produce magicals, or why some wizarding couples produce squibs.

    • @RaindropsBleeding
      @RaindropsBleeding 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I love the word squib. it only makes sense in a world where some form of magic exists, but it's kind of necessary. Just saying "non-bender" could mean that there is no bending lineage or that the parents were benders and the child wasn't. Squib makes a very specific distinction.

    My two cents are the following,
    Air nomads live everywhere, when an air bender is born, they are send to the air nomads temples for training.
    So essentially, the air nation still lives, however, with all the hiding and fighting and stuff, no more air benders were found, because they were no where for then to go for the training, and since air bending is highly spiritual, it must not show as easily as other bending techniques.

    • @ztoxicman
      @ztoxicman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      that isn't really true, while there isn't any real mention of relationships outside of the air nomad temples other than of course fan theories, the likely hood of an air bender being born outside the temple and then being brought to a temple is highly unlikely since some of those temples aren't really that accessible to normal people and or certain benders while a earth bender could feasibly get to a temple it isn't really likely still (Yes I'm aware fire nation soldiers got up there, however because of the comet most fire benders got immense power so they could like some masters could fly, even if it was only for a short time.) . And as another thing, Air Benders were always born among the air nomads due to high spirituality so most likely most air nomads kept themselves from breeding with other benders as the high spirituality always guaranteed a bender so there could be a chance an air nomad would have a fire bender or an earth bender and so on instead of an air bender and that could slowly dwindle the population. So as I said already, most probably only had relationships with other Air Nomads.

    @AZ-697 4 ปีที่แล้ว +61

    I have always supported this theory since Ty Lee's debut in the series. I also love the idea that Pema is related to Ty Lee as well. Perhaps one of Ty Lee's AN ancestor married a FN nobleman, maybe the ancestor was even killed by Sozin and/or the information was hidden from the family to protect the family....I also have a theory that everyone who received Airbending during Harmonic Convergence had Air Nomad DNA in them, as supported that Bumi received AB, who is 50% AN. I have another theory that the Order of the White Lotus also hid Air Nomad babies around the world, but none were Airbenders because they had no connection to an Air Culture. The Southern Air Temple Council did suspect that trouble was brewing. Might also explain the high density of new Airbenders in Ba Sing Se following Harmonic Convergence, apart from the fact that Ba Sing Se has the largest population of any other city in the world.
    Personally I would love another story with Aang and Ty Lee where they learn this history before Tenzin was born and Aang uses Energybending on Ty Lee to make her an Airbender in hopes that it will help preserve Airbending in case he doesn't produce an Airbending heir to teach the next Avatar. They didn't share this with the rest of the Gaang.

      Personally, I think it's dumb because it isn't the air you're seeing in an aura, supposedly, but rather the spirit itself. It'd make sense for an airbender to see auras because they're generally spiritual, but not because "the air around people". If the aura were the air itself, you could aurabend by simply airbending, at least a little bit. I'm not sure the show has shown or refuted that (outside, say, people maintaining auras within windy storms), but I wager it wouldn't commit to showing truth of that sort of idea air-aura idea either.

    • @roseobsydian
      @roseobsydian 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kowzorz I understand what you are saying. However if you look up the definition of aura its the atmosphere around someone. Atmosphere is the air which is where I got that idea. Maybe like blood bending it would take immense power to actually bend someone’s aura which is why there aren’t examples. I see what you are saying by maybe it’s just because air benders are so spiritual that they can see auras. However, she is young and already has a natural ability to see auras which in my opinion goes beyond normal capabilities.

    In regards to bending "genetics" while there is a genetic component, it also requires a degree of spirituality. For example, Sokka has the capacity to bend on a genetic level but fails to meet the spiritual side of it and thus is a non-bender. Since any Air Nomad children raised during the 100 year war would've by necessity been raised outside of Air Nomad culture even a genetic potential would've been underdeveloped.

    I like the theory, I always thought that the fact that they killed “all” of the air nomads was just propaganda that the fire nation fed to the public and I think the harmonic convergence from Korra proves that. I think many Air Benders escaped and blended into society have children who carried a dormant air bender gene which surfaced after harmonic convergence. However I am curious where the fact that all Air Nomads are Air Benders fact came from cuz I don’t remember ever hearing that at any point. I’d imagine that Air Acolytes that Aang establishes with the new air nation was based on the old Air Acoyltes with just people who believe in the air nation religion or just those unlucky few who had air nomad parents and had no bending. I don’t see a reason that air acolytes couldn’t or did not already exist in the pre-100 year war era.

    Hmm this theory hold points if I may offer the counter one.
    Yes Ty Lee has Air Nomad ancestry but not from 100 years ago. Ty Lee's ancestor is from many years before hand. We know from Avatar Kyoshi's mother that some Air Nomads reject their old way of life. It's possible that Ty Lee's ancestor preferred Fire Nation culture and ways of living. So they left the Air Nomads to live in the Fire Nation.
    I think this makes more sense as J left out one very import details about the Air Nomads their tattoos. If Ty Lee's ancestor survived the initial genocide there's little chance they could marry into a nobel Fire Nation family because the tattoos would give them away. The only way I could see this not happening if the ancestor was not an Airbending Master which I find unlikely as Air Nomads are raised in the temples until they're of age and or earn their tattoos.

    • @renee1309

      Yeah, there are also quite a few characters in the Fire Nation who don't have the typical black hair/amber eyes/sharp face (i.e. Roku's wife, On Ji from the fire nation school, etc). I think before the war it was common to intermarry.
      There were probably a few Air Nomads who intermarried with Fire Nation, producing kids of mixed descent way before the war. By the fourth/fifth/sixth generations, they're like Ty Lee: definitely Fire Nation but with some characteristics connecting her to her Air Nomad ancestor.

      if that's the case I'm not against it, but they might have also just realized it themselves, seeing as it's not that hard to get that Ty Lee is very airbender-like

      Fluffy Emu Yeah, buts it’s a theory that’s been quite popular for a while (as in, months) especially since ATLA became available for Netflix, you can see a lot of accounts talking about it in many social media platforms, I personally saw it on Instagram around May with the tumblr post (and that was the second time they posted it, as they had done it around January too), and then saw many people talking about in on TikTok and twitter, so even if they thought about it they could say that it was a coincidence or that they didn’t know about it before doing this video. Though, I think they do a lot of research when doing their theory videos, so I don’t see it likely happening. (Just to clarify again to anyone) It really is nothing against them, I thought it would be nice if they kinda said where they found the theory or the inspiration/idea for it.

      Pretty sure I read this theory years ago! I think it's a very common one so maybe there's not a single source? Would have been nice to have talked about it's popularity/commonness even if SuperCarlinBrothers thought of it separately.

    13:01 In "Return to Omashu", (s2 e3) Azula says that Ty Lee is the daughter of a nobleman.

    I thought this was obvious
    She moves like an airbender because airbenders and people from the air nation move with grace and little physical contact , firebenders or people from the fire nation move with passion and anger

    i had a similar thought after watching the last video.
    all the nations have nonbenders, but in every portrayal of the air nomads they are all benders.
    my thought was: where did the nonbenders born into the air nation go if not to the temples? surely there had to be some. surely they would share the same culture and practices as their bender-bros. surely these had to survive in some form somewhere.
    i think you nailed it though. air nomads (even benders using it only to enhance their performance, as the wind lines in the show seem to be there for the viewers and the bending is invisible to all but the highly observant) using their natural agility to perform a circus, traveling the country/world collecting other air nomads "expanding the circus" seems totally legit. especially if you're right about being aided by high ranking officials, which also makes sense as not everyone in the fire nation was for the war

    I love how SCB can get me onboard with things that my first reaction to is like: oh god no... what are you thinking? This is terrible and just wrong..
    And then after watching I'm like: omg so cool! Can't believe it, I'm so hyped right now! Wow!

    The way I always thought about the wipeout of the Air Nomads was that only the airbenders were wiped out. Air Nomads were nomadic, as J said, but the temples were only accessable by benders, appearing to the rest of the world that the entire nation could bend. So many of the non-benders may have escaped capture, seeing as how without tattoos or bending they weren't as easy to differentiate. That's just the way I thought about it though, sorry.

    Hate to be that guy but the monks told young Airbenders to avoid Ba Sing Se because of how different it was to the lifestyle Air Nomads are supposed to practice, it's unlikely that any Air Nomads were in Ba Sing Se at the time of the genocide, plus the 100-year war doesn't start until the Air Nomad genocide so Air Nomads wouldn't know that Ba Sing Se is the safest place. But Ty Lee is awesome and is probably a distant decadent of an Air Nomad as per her physical features and personality, which also explains why she herself could not Airbend due to the lack of spiritual energy in the Fire Nation post Sozin's comet.
