    Unpopular opinion: "Love is an Open Door" was a song about psychopathic manipulation
    If you listen to it, his opening "maybe it's the party talking, or the chocolate fondue" was the kid friendly equivalent to the phrase, "man, how drunk am I?", A phrase used to get people to loosen up, and lower their expectations of you at parties. And throughout the song, Anna was leading during the "cute" parts. When Hans actually was leading, it was always really generic stuff that was clearly him trying to get her to play along and look like a couple. Let's be honest here, he was not going to say sandwiches, and we all know it. And the part that pulls it all together is that Hans, the guy who clearly had been outside and should know how social convention works, proposes after meeting her for a day. An action that is clearly taking advantage of a girl who clearly doesn't understand how socializing works.

      Thank you! I’ve known that the entire time, but people still forget there was obvious clues in “Love Is An Open Door” that foreshadowed his true colors and still subtly built the twist. They still complain that Hans did a complete 180 without any subtle hints and indications.

      Also Him "trying" to save Elsa makes sense cause he wants to look like the good guy and make Elsa's death look like an accident. If you watch the part where he grabs the guys arm to stop him from shooting Elsa with the crossbow he looks up first then grabs the guys arm which makes the bolt hit the chandelier and almost hit Elsa, he meant for the bolt to do that.

    Ah yes, the summer home in Norway. With a castle. Can we visit?
    Also, it could be just me, but after the reveal I always interpreted Hans' smile as smug rather than warm fuzzies.
    Also, also, actually, Actually, it was the parents that decided the solution was keeping Elsa's magic hidden after the incident, rather than Papi and the trolls who removed what was there that would have presumably caused harm left untreated. A good analogy for it is wood. Like, if you get a splinter, it has to be removed before it gets infected, but their parents basically said "No more wood ever." So Anna is fine when exposed to wood again (you know before being stabbed in the heart), she just wished she remembered wood existed. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. :)

    I would like to note that my dad, who is a professional marriage and family therapist, has claimed Hans to be one of the most realistic predators he's seen in a movie, and specifically defends the moment in the boat in a very simple way. Hans is manipulative. To everyone. All the time. He's not going to drop his act in the open like that. He's still in character.

      I believe you and anyone that doesn't can go watch Cinematherapy's video on hans. also I don't really see Hans smile under the boat as only being good because:
      1. movies/comics/whatever has most likely changed what we perceive as an evil smile (hint: not everyone is as obviously focused on their own goals as the Duke of weaselton)
      2. he could genuinely be happy in that moment as he could easily have realized just how easy it was going to be to manipulate Anna into marrying him.
      also if you want Hans to be good then why in the world did he propose to Anna after JUST ONE DAY when he would have obviously known better?

    It's just the historical nerd in me, but historical large royal famlies like Han's family the youngest children of the family would be married off to minor nobles, or a princess/prince that would have no chance to the throne but in the case of Hans he would have had a chance to throne if he would have married Anna.

    When Kristoff said that people will “cheat” and “beat” you as well as his overall disdain for other people, wherever he was before the trolls was _not_ a good situation. The other ice harvesters may have been glad to get rid of him for all we know.
    As for the troll’s advice, they say “fear will be Elsa’s enemy.” The graphic shows Elsa being attacked, which seeing that they knew what clothes she’d be wearing and what hair style she’d have reads to me as prophetic-aka what would happen with fear of her ice powers. HER fear. They were trying to warn her not to be afraid of herself. The family took it the wrong way.

    • @christianali5431
      @christianali5431 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes, but they showed her being attacked BY OTHER PEOPLE. It looks prophetic, but what are they prophesying? Maybe they were pretending to prophesy that Elsa would be attacked, so that the king and queen would lock her up and ruin the kingdom.

      yeah plus agnar teaches Elsa the mantra "conceal; don't feel" (and I think "don't let them know" gets added to it in the Broadway show) which is a terrible thing to teach anybody.
      although on the flip side Elsa is pretty obviously scared when they warn her about her powers and I don't really see anyone try to comfort her (tbf the scene is basically over by then) and also her parents are for the most part following the troll's advice (like keeping Anna and Elsa separated and removing Anna's memories of Elsa's magic)

    what if Hans realized while Anna and Kristoff were away, and he was put in charge, that if Anna and Elsa were out of the way, he could be put in charge. Which would explain why he saves Elsa, because even if it looked like an accident, he would want people to think of him as a good ruler, and why he decided he didn’t need to marry Anna?

      It probably wouldn't change the part where Hans didn't make any attempt to talk to Elsa despite what he says in his monologue to Anna however, though could always be ruled as a plot hole.

  • @kennethwright5664
    @kennethwright5664 4 ปีที่แล้ว +66

    At the point when Hans is trying to talk Else down instead of killing her, he is attempting to "seal the deal" with Anna. Either he succeeds, takes her prisoner, and has Annas complete trust now set in some kind of unbreakable ice or he fails, Elsa dies, and he looks more like the heroic figure he wants to appear to be and gets Annas complete trust (yadda yadda yadda). Either way it goes, it's that final push that makes him seem unimpeachable in the eyes of Anna and the soldiers or Arendale. THAT was his reasoning for doing it and while it didn't pay off in the end, it wasn't a bad tactic.

    • @Chrono_Mitsurugi
      @Chrono_Mitsurugi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      trying to talk her down is fine. but why did he stop the guy shooting the crossbow?
      he could have just said he tried but the the men under orders of Duke Weaselton killed her.
      what makes more sense is that he didn't want Elsa dead until after she got rid of the endless winter.

    Me: *Sees title* I knew it!!
    8:17-
    Ben: And that is when the real villains step in, the trolls!
    Also me: Well, I personally think its at the beginning of the movie.
    Here's why-
    It was literally they're fault Elsa couldn't control her powers in the first place!
    At the beginning of the movie when the king and queen (Forgot their names lol) took Anna and Elsa to the trolls, Grandpappy said, "Your power will only grow. There is beauty in it, but also great danger. You must learn to control it, Fear will be your enemy." (10:18-10:25). He was the one who made Elsa scared of her powers! He was also the one who gave the king the idea to keep Elsa in total isolation away from the outside world, and her sister! And I quote from Ben himself, "I mean, it tears both of their relationships completely apart, leaves them in utter isolation, and drives their parents to go and look for some kind of a cure, which leads to their death! And it turns out that the secret keeping literally drives Elsa to become a recluse, where she has absolutely no control of her powers because she fears them so much, and its not until she actually embraces those powers that she has control over them!" (10:50-11:19). In conclusion, I had the same theory! Just in a different way!
    If u made it to the end of my comment, thx for reading!
    I know it was long, I just rlly wanted to share it with u all, and maybe Ben and J will see my comment! =3

    “Get the fiancé out of the way and the whole thing will be fixed” I mean they basically admitted to it.
    Edit: I did write this before I had fully watched the video and yes I now know that he literally says what I commented.

  • @balrighty3523
    @balrighty3523 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    One part I think hampers this theory: how did the trolls deliver their memory magic to Hans in the first place? When we see them memory-mod young Anna, she is there, at their encampment. They make physical contact with her. We never see Hans in the presence of any troll, nor is there a point where it could be plausibly implied that Hans was alone long enough for a troll to mind-mod him.
    Unless it totally happened, and on-screen no less, and the only reason we the audience are unaware is because the trolls broke through the fourth wall to mind-mod us in the real world.

  • @sfsin3380

    On the saving Elsa thing if Hans was responsible for Elsa's death even justifiably it would be grounds to bar him from marrying to Anna for political reasons (it would look bad Mary Queen of Scots was forced to flee Scotland after marring a man suspected of killing her previous husband). Hans was probably just doing everything in his power to keep his hands clean (at least in the eyes of the people)

    If they're ever going to make a "Frozen 3" (which they probably will, in all honesty), I really hope they make, at least, one of the trolls the true villian of the franchise. I'll even go as far as to say that the trolls were the reason for Elsa's grandpa's fear of magic along with Hans' villiany. It would all make sense and not have Hans or Grand Pabbie be such flat characters.

    I just re-watched Frozen. In the beginning, Elsa has control of her powers. She has an accident, sure, but so much could have been avoided if the Trolls hadn't mentioned her powers could be dangerous. She's young and the fear obviously only does more harm than good. Also, her parents should have taught her discipline, not fear. "Practice with your powers and you will be able to control them" instead of "lock the castle down and isolate Elsa in hopes she will learn control".

    J, for your ice problems try getting a small, square Igloo-type cooler and take the lid off. Fill 3/4 of the way with water and place in freezer. Be sure to take it out BEFORE it freezes completely, ~12 hours. You'll have a few inches of perfectly clear ice on top since the water freezes from the top down due to the insulation of the cooler on the other sides. Then score/cut/break pieces to your desired size and enjoy!

    On the flip side, Hans' smile can be explained - he doesn't know he just met Princess Anna, he just thinks she is some girl - so he could genuinely have got the fuzzies and then be planning to ignore it to pursue Elsa (or Anna if she really was his original plan and not a fall back) x

    I hope y'all came to this conclusion separate from MatPat. He said basically these exact same things, using almost the exact points. Personally, I think y'all did so independently, because once I heard that Disney changed the story in order for Elsa to not be a villain anymore, it made it clear that Hans WASN'T a villain until Elsa wasn't allowed to be a villain, at which point Hans' role was sloppily flipped. They didn't have to make him a villain (I think Hans feeling he had to kill the Elsa in order to save Anna and the kingdom would be very compelling, even for a good guy), but they felt they needed a baddy, so Hans was sacrificed.

  • @JackAttack15
    @JackAttack15 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm still convinced that Hans was never supposed to be the main villan and was a lady minute decision. And I mean a very last minute decision. They were 80% done with the movie and Disney demanded the change but they were on a deadline and didn't have time to go back and make some changes so that's why it's so surprising.

    I feel like Disney did an excellent job of telling two stories at once, catering to both purists (original story) and Disney-ists (kids, for example.)
    They told the standard Disney story by having Hans be a villain, also conveniently allowing them to keep the trolls good and get that sweet merch opportunity. This version is one that only makes sense after you learn he's bad, of course he was misleading us the whole time to earn Ana and Elsa's trust. Sure, ok.
    But they also manage to sneak, underneath the Disney story, the original. The trolls aren't evil, they just have their own intentions and values. Their intention is to marry Kristoff, so they do that. It's all there, they just used Hans as a means to the end. Not malicious per se, perhaps they knew that Kristoff really was a better match for Ana than Hans would have been.
    I applaud Disney's ability to do this, and thank you for making me think about it.

    Your all forgetting Hans was put in charge before Anna left to find her sister and the subjects didn't seem to care! If the dude never left he might have gotten away with Elsa hiding and Anna dead by being frozen. He was put in charge of the kingdom and didn't have to do a thing, everyone, at the party, knew they were engaged! Like Hans, your best plan would have been to stay at the castle Elsa would have been assumed dead Anna would actually be dead and you didn't habe to lift a finger!

    My only explanation for why Hans aborts his plan of marrying Anna and killing Elsa is because he thinks Anna is about to die and he knows kissing her won't work because he doesn't really love her. However, that still doesn't explain why he saved Elsa's life or why he actually has a better connection with Anna than many people in Disney movies who actually end up together. Plus, how come the trolls say it's easier to fix a mind problem by erasing someone's happy memories with their sister than it is to fix a problem with the heart that can literally be solved with a hug? That seems fishy.

  • @NeaBEWG
    @NeaBEWG 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Funny that you covered EXACTLY the same issues I have had with this movie since it came out. Like hey, I am all up for a "plot twist" but you still have to give some sort of sense to your character. If we'd seen Hans plotting behind her, change his attitude when he was alone or SOMETHING, it could have made sense. Idk, it just looks like he went through way too much for the sisters if that was the plan he had from the start. Why warn Elsa at the castle? She could have been turned into a villain in that very moment in front of her people after killing up a dude sending him flying off from her castle? (also possibly killed by the other dude). BESIDES, by that point, Anna had let him in charge so why go look for her? They both could have been killed and then "you are all we have left" and he could argue he was trying to follow her wishes. But yeah, if the Trolls had anything to do with it (as per Fixer Upper), I wish they'd also be more clear about it in the movie.

    What if their ultimate goal was to make Kristoff King? Grand Pappy had a vision about a "Troll" King, and when they found Kristoff as a child raised him and when Anna was brought for help, they saw how they could manipulate the threads of fate to make Anna eventually Marry Kristoff.. Frozen 3 will be when the Trolls manipulate Elsa's death so that Anna will be Queen and Kristoff King - that is when they do some more "mind play" and make Kristoff do some crazy rules to make Troll Kind the masters of the human race.

    What is worst is there was no reason for him to go BAD anyway. Even if the Trolls didn't do anything, the story Plot didn't need a villain. Alright, how about when he goes to kiss Anna and it doesn't work. It doesn't work because he not in "LOVE" with her. Oh he's could be attracted to her, but love and True love? He tells Anna the truth, that he's the seventh son and that he wants to love ANNA but hasn't fallen in love with her. So he makes her comfortable and says "There is only one way to save you, Anna, you may hate me after... I hope you forgive me. Your sister has to die, to save Arendelle, and to save you. I'm sorry." Then he leaves and locks the door. The rest of the movie follows the same path no changes, Everything is the same even Anna dropping her hopes of love from Hans and falling for Kristoff. The Whole Hans or Trolls being EVIL is useless unnecessary. This change would also go with the theme of the rest of Anna and Kristoff's story, you don't fall in love with one song.
