Even the brand name stuff is often made in China, so who's to know? I looked at a lot of different ones and didn't see any difference, often with the same stock photo of the part. Thanks EJ
You made the right decision George, that new one has a larger diameter hole it appears or the tolerances are way off. The old one is probably made out of better material too.
George, the thrust washer was in place in your video and you can see the edge of it shining. I used a dental pick to get between it and the block to remove mine. I'm rebuilding a Kohler K301A and a K321A engines for two Cub Cadet tractors. The K301A had a metal governor gear and those arent encountered as much as the nylon gears. The stub shaft in the block that the gear rotates on wears, but it is replaceable. The one on my K321 is worn out of spec and scored, so I'm replacing it. That little stub shaft is about 40 bucks. Never use China junk on these engines. The original Kohler parts cost more, but they fit and function as they should. New old stock parts can be found on ebay and for a great price sometimes. Yes, original Kohler parts are costly, but can last half a century. These engines were very expensive when new. A Cub Cadet 149 garden tractor with a 14hp kohler K321A was 1900.00 in 1973.
Thanks Lloyd. It is sad that even the OEM parts are now made in China and the quality just isn't there so often. Some stuff is OK, but this isn't one of them. Thanks for stopping by.
Id have to agree that if you have the engine all apart you should replace the gear with a new one, unless the new part is junk! Youre right, that seems pretty easy!
Either the governor gear or the throttle linkage is not properly set up and adjusted. Hard to really say without seeing the subject. Thanks for stopping by
The way of life these days.We wanted to replace our governor too,but the replacement was screwier...But enough of politics. ;) That's sad that the new part was so badly made.Glad the old 1 was still usable. That's a neat set-up.
Howdy George wanted to ask you do u know were I can get me a yarn cart cheap I don’t plan on using for yarn want it to put all my magizines and books in and different things
That long screw is called the governor pin and is part # 231355S. You can find it in several different places of your choice. Here is one listing on eBay: www.ebay.com/itm/225018549887?itmmeta=01HTRQSCZKTHA8HYZTD0XQRMDF&hash=item346426967f:g:8L8AAOSw5DVlv86D&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA4Jsq%2BBswPWkheIq8IweqrksgPwMXIkAjV3hwvc5TeT8Ijhyy%2BWneFUS2GSmetbX4lXU6HdekfV7OeucLzaPHoTguerHSXZarvvieGFNYSiaVxQTHJwEQZ%2BZ6yODl4xvjavHbCHd5c3GJG6jsbC9F4neg19Fxbw4QnV1W9lQFtVFMlYDJVDzD1G%2BOumbt%2FBPH5HY%2BkZPa7C0q6GwjK6f7bhWnGpefhT6ocKvLG4sLfJYdTPzTHtn1hqbckNk%2FiAWxFZuaxJHpMahVQ%2ByP7mnPX5d%2FNqRvGM5xTaYL1f3Ym52Z%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR4bR5ZfWYw Hope this helps and thanks for stopping by.
Because of the wear factor and expense in production. They are sometimes made of aluminum or pot metal, and even steel, but most that I have seen are plastic. Great question, thanks for asking. Six Advantages of Plastic Gears Lighter Weight Components. ... Low Noise and Vibration. ... No Corrosion in Moist Environments. ... Eliminates the Need for External Lubrication. ... Easily Mass Produced and Prototyped. ... Less Deposit and Less Tool Cleaning.
@@TheShadeTreeFixitMan Thanks for the video! I've been watching videos of small engines just to see how they work. Very clear example of the governor control mechanism. Such an elegant solution to control fuel supply under load. The ingenuity of men, well some men. I'd never come up with that, lol.
I agree, didn't have the washer originally I'd put it back the same.
Wow, new one is sloppy.
China junk...staying with the original. Thanks Moe.
Good decision Bud!! Same thing I would have done!! Buying parts now a days is a crap shoot, even the brand name stuff!!☻
Even the brand name stuff is often made in China, so who's to know? I looked at a lot of different ones and didn't see any difference, often with the same stock photo of the part. Thanks EJ
I agree George , New one made in China !!!!
Staying with the original. Thanks Mike
You made the right decision George, that new one has a larger diameter hole it appears or the tolerances are way off. The old one is probably made out of better material too.
Thanks Ken.
Hey Shade. Isn't nice being the first to figure it out. Good for you. Thanks for sharing.👍👍🍁
Thanks for stopping by Andy. It is my pleasure.

Thanks for the great information. I appreciate it.
I totally agree with you George. That new gear , something just isn't right about it.
Thanks Lloyd. It is sad that even the OEM parts are now made in China and the quality just isn't there so often. Some stuff is OK, but this isn't one of them. Thanks for stopping by.

It seems that "new" doesn't always mean "better". Thanks Joe
THANK YOU this is just the video I needed to repair my old Ford!!😊
LOL, glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. My 12 horse koler will come off hi idle on it's own. What's your diagnosis doctor. I'm thinking maybe that gear.
Either the governor gear or the throttle linkage is not properly set up and adjusted. Hard to really say without seeing the subject. Thanks for stopping by
Interesting project . Sometimes OEM parts are better than after market .
The sad fact is that many of the "OEM" parts are now made in China too. Thanks for stopping by, George.
Replacement parts are not created equal anymore, I would use the old one too, good how to George
Thanks so much Tom. I appreciate you.
The way of life these days.We wanted to replace our governor too,but the replacement was screwier...But enough of politics. ;) That's sad that the new part was so badly made.Glad the old 1 was still usable. That's a neat set-up.
Thank you Bry. It is what it is.
Unfortunately new parts are not always as good as old parts .
For sure. Thanks Terry

No sir, best to look on Facebook marketplace or Craig's List.
Boy, that's the way of things these days. You buy brand new parts and their junk......
China quality. Thanks for stopping by.
Any idea what that “long screw” is called? Mine is worn and will need a replacement

I have also found that some of the new stuff is not as good as the old worn one.
The neat thing is that the original isn't worn much at all. Thanks Vernon
👍🌞 enjoy your day!!
Thank you, I enjoy every day as a gift from God.
I am experiencing the same. New kohler gear seems looser than the original. Like genuine kohler. Gonna sleep on it and do some research….
I need to get this engine back together real soon! It has been "resting" now for several months on my bench.
It's hard to get parts that are right anymore.
You can say that again. Thanks Terry
I was gonna buy new but seeing this I rather just stick with old
If it ain't broke, don't fix it someone once said. Thanks for stopping by.
george its not space shuttle lol
I was planning on an April launch however...LOL. Thanks Don
they just don't make quality stuff anymore.
That is true, Glenn and unfortunately even the OEM stuff is mostly made in China now. Thanks for stopping by.
chinese junk parts
Sadly, yes. Thanks for stopping by.
