Zoë Harcombe on The Game Changers: Good Story, Unconvincing Argument

  • Zoë Harcombe, Ph.D., concedes The Game Changers tells “a good story,” but that’s as far as the 2019 documentary’s accolades should go, she suggests. In this presentation from Dec. 15, 2019, Harcombe offers an incisive and often humorous critique of the arguments the film makes in favor of a plant-based diet.
The Game Changers bases its support of plant-based eating on three common arguments, Harcombe explains:
    1. It’s healthier than non-vegan diets.
    2. It’s better for the animals.
    3. It’s better for the planet.
Since the majority of the film is devoted to the nutrition argument, Harcombe focuses her attention there as well.
After noting that, despite the movie’s claims, there is a dearth of scientific evidence for going plant-based, Harcombe turns with wry humor to the film’s burrito experiments. The science in these and the movie’s other experiments is deeply flawed, she claims.
One experiment, which follows the Tennessee Titans as they turn to vegan eating, “is a great example that the standard American diet is rubbish,” Harcombe says. She argues any apparent benefits experienced by the athletes were probably attributable to their trading of junk food for whole foods. “Now the whole food just happens to be plant-based,” she notes, but “how good could they have been if their whole food diet had been animal-based?” she asks.
Finally, Harcombe argues the film tries to gloss over the nutritional deficiencies in a vegan diet by suggesting everyone should take supplements, not only those who have gone plant-based. But those who follow a healthy diet of whole foods that include animal products do not need supplements, she claims: “A healthy diet provides the nutrients that we need. A healthy diet does not require supplements. A vegan diet requires supplements. De facto, a vegan diet is not healthy.”

Biologists classify humans as omnivores based on observed behavior of the majority. They make no claims about needed meat dairy and eggs, only that we can digest them. Humans can also digest human flesh. That doesn't mean that we should eat it or any other meat. Actually the majority of humans can not properly digest dairy past weening. Eggs are the densest source of dietary cholesterol of all.

Cows are also able to digest meat. Does that make them omnivores? Of course not. We are apes, and like all apes, our diet should be plant based maybe mixed with some grubs. Only a very small percentage of chimps eat meat on occasion, that's it. Our physiology never evolved to eating meat for optimal health. One obvious fact is our metabolism functions best on glucose (see Krebs cycle). We need a lot of carbohydrates to produce energy in our mitochondria. The lipid metabolism is not the body's preferred metabolic pathway. The human body always wants to use glucose first, lipids second, and proteins last. Proteins are building blocks, not energy fuel.

A vegan diet only requires a B12 supplement.. however many people eating meat can also be deficient in B12 if someone’s diet is poorly managed.
Also animals are often fed B12 in their food as many spend most of the time inside and do not therefore receive B12 from the bacteria in soils .. so all vegans are doing are cutting out the middleman which is the animal…

I've had the same experience. I was a 'healthy' omnivore and my bloodwork drastically improved in 8 weeks following a change to WFPB. I always exercised but everything became so much easier as I was leaving animal products behind. My total cholesterol dropped from 235 to 180 in 8 weeks (I did before and after blood work just to see for myself), blood pressure came down from 130/90 to 105/60. My naturopath, who does not promote a WFPD said she had never seen anything like it. Cardio exercise is now much easier at 57 than in my 30s and 40s. Strength training is also much easier - without protein powders ;-) . People in my strength training group who are 20 years younger are asking me what I do and that I'm now their goal (I think that's hilarious). Yes, there is always a limit set by genetics, especially our mitochondria capacity so not everyone will (can) win the marathon on this lifestyle but I honestly can say I would never be able to exercise at the level I do now if it wasn't for this diet change.

There are aggressive, unfriendly people in the world and some of them are vegans but vegansim is not a diet so please put forth a little effort so you're not spreading false information. Veganism is a lifestyle that relies on a plant based diet. A vegan eats a plant based diet but someone who eats a plant based diet isn't necessarily a vegan. A true vegan knows the difference but you can easily look it up. Some people get upset when their lifestyle is publicly criticized by someone who speaks their opinion as though its based on fact and can be scientifically proven. She's trying hard to justify the killing of animals. 🙈
By the way, you can still keep cows, sheep, goats, pigs and chicken as pets or to rejuvenate topsoil. Just don't murder them. ♥️🌱🖖

You have been brainwashed. Congratulations. There is nothing wrong with killing animals for food and at the same time killing animals for food does not require any justification. Pain, death, torture, suffering is part of life and reality you live in, so you should just deal with it. The reason why humans need to kill and eat animals is based on biology and specifically human physiology and biochemistry. It has nothing to do with morals, ethics and other nonsense. We know for a fact that the highest quality and most nutrient dense foods for humans on this planet come directly from animals, not plants.
*"By the way, you can still keep cows, sheep, goats, pigs and chicken as pets or to rejuvenate topsoil."* - delusion and mental illness. We selectively apply context and value to everything and everyone we see around us and everything we do on a daily basis. The fundamental part of our world, the reality we find ourselves in, is the fact that different species present a different value and serve as different utility to other species. Reality and real life revolves around oppression and exploitation of living organisms. All life eats other life. You cannot escape this reality. In order to survive, YOU as a living creature MUST consume other LIVING creatures. Plants or animals - doesn't make a difference. Vegans essentially see the world as some fairy tale and they think that reality we live in should be something like from Disney movie.
*"Just don't murder them."* - and maybe you should stop murdering plants then ? They are also living beings and they want to live you know ? You are talking a complete nonsense and you present a science and reality denialism.

@@mello.b3373 wow, vegan bullshit bingo in full effect 😆 you say it doesn't make a difference if you kill animals or plants: you are fooling yourself. Of course it makes a difference. Give a child an apple and a bunny. What do you think it will eat and with what will it cuddle and play? You know the answer. It's a learned behaviour to kill animals and it had its purpose but not anymore. Evolution, baby!
If you're concerned about the wellbeing of plants, that would be another good reason not to eat animals because we feed them with guess what: plants.
Your reality is just a concept that you don't want to get out of, so you defend it, I get it. I'm vegan for a couple of years now and I'm lacking nothing at all, in contrary, I'm thriving on this plant based wholefood diet. Harming as little other animals as possible and yes, other animals eat animals but I have the choice and my choice is to be compassionate. This probably triggers your emotionally and you have to justify your behaviour.
Try vegan for 21 days, I challenge you. Only good things will happen to you, I promise 😘

Your whole worldview is a lie. I dare you to search for wild hog hunters. Farmers all over the world hire them to "murder" hogs to protect your precious plants. Theres videos where they literally lure them into cages to blow them up.

    • @Gee-Jay
      @Gee-Jay 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@angryahole what has that to do with if I want to eat animals or not? Right, nothing. In other areas of the world, where they have problems with overpopulation of certain animals, they feed them bait with anti baby pills. Also a way of dealing with that "problem".
I know that harvesting plant based food will also kill some animals but never intentionally and never in that scale as the mass production does.

As a Vegetarian I did not enjoy your talk... I am a tolerant person and would not want to "convert" anybody to stop eating meat , so it is really strange to me that somebody , like Zoe ridicules other diets which are not her own ...for me this is lack of self confidence ... if you are so sure you are eating the right thing ,be happy! And let others , who want to live without animal flesh also be happy ! I am 65, never had any deficiency of nutrients and happy ...also happy with my diet .... I wish you the same!

@@kasardevi8 2/3 of the world’s population is also metabolically diseased. Very high levels of visceral fat, Type 2 diabetes, low average life expectancy, etc etc. Look at the study of the Maasai vs the Kikuyu tribes in Kenya. Almost exclusively meat eaters vs almost exclusively plant eaters. They interbred and lived nearby, so their genetics were similar. The meat eating tribe were on average 6 inches taller, 20 pounds heavier, and had stronger grip strength than the plant eating tribe. The meat eating tribe also had beautiful straight white teeth compared to the plant eating tribe with crooked teeth and dental caries.
And let’s talk about agriculture. Plant-based agriculture is destroying the soil and the planet. It’s stripping the land bare and destroying the habitats of millions of animals; it’s also killing millions and millions of animals directly. Regenerative animal agriculture on the other hand restores the soil naturally and is a beautiful cycle of life that gives animals meaning, purpose, and a beautiful worry-free life. It utilizes rocky land that could never be used for plant agriculture.
So if I’m going to choose the compassionate route that nourishes my body and helps conserve our beautiful planet, I’m going to eat lots and lots of meat.

I work in the field of regenerative agriculture since more than 30 years ...therefore I cant agree with your theories how plant based diets destroy agriculture! Biggest problem in regenerative agriculture is the mass mono cultivation of plants like soy, maize which are used as animal feed... if you say 2/3 of the population is metabolically ill, I agree with you in the Western world. I lived nearly all my life in India, where 2/3 of population is still metabolically fit , as in most parts of Asia ... only the rich population, who can afford to overeat, or go for a more westernised diet, are getting fat....If I say westernised diet, I do not mean a healthy western diet, but all the western junk food which comes to these countries and is a kind of trending thing ...Generally I feel it is not so much what we eat...meat or plant based ... but the quantity we eat ... my experience
