To tone with the Wella 050, mix 1 part Wella to 2 parts 20 vol developer and leave on hair for about 20 minutes.
I did tone first with the T14 for about 15 minutes and then used the 050 for 20 min.

Awesome tutorial! I have spent thousands of dollars over the past 4 years at salons trying to get this look, never once have I been satisfied. I made the plunge today and went to Sally beauty. It turned out wonderfully, a beautiful slate grey, although I should of bleached right to my roots prior to this, I have 2 inch roots that are golden brown in colour. I have extremely thick hair so I ended up using a full bottle of t14 and t050. Thank you so much for making this video!

So let me start by saying I am 43 and have been dying my hair for 30 years. For the last 20 I have been doing it in different colors like blue, pink, purple and every other color there is. I was doing it before it was cool. hehe Anyway, I am about 90 percent grey and got my first grey hairs at 18 (pretty sure its cause I was pregnant thanks kids hehe). So I decided a couple years ago I would just dye it to grey/silver so when my hair grew back in naturally it wouldnt look so odd. I tried a few different times with having horrible results. I saw your video yesterday and said what the heck I havent tried this yet let me get everything Kristi is saying and we shall try it. Well let me tell you its perfect. It is a beautiful grey/silver color. Its really stunning and I wanted to tell you thank you so much. Now I have been wondering if I should put a couple streaks of pink. lol Guess its hard getting away from the fun colors when you been doing it for 20 yrs. I was worried it would make me look my age having this hair since I typically look 10 to 15 years younger than what I am but my husband said last night that the grey not only looked really good but it was extremely sexy and didnt make me look any older than having the fun colored hair. I came to work this morning and was hoping other people would think the same thing and it wasnt just my husband being a wonderful loving man. To my surprise everyone so far has giving compliments and says they agree with my husband that I still look like I'm in my late 20's early 30's. Heck yeah who doesnt love that. Well again I wanted to say thank you Kristi and to anyone else out there take this young lady's advice she is right on the money with what she is telling you. A side note, you look awesome and your hair looks great which is why I decided out of the 100's of youtube videos on how to get grey hair I went with yours. Thanks yet again and have a fabulous day. :)
Mary Caldwell wow, I'm thinking what you had thought yourself, I'm in my 40's and would like to go grey but worry it will make me look older because of it. I might have to give it a go.

Fringe Beauty, I'm worried about the same thing! I just can't continue on with my dark hair and grey roots though. My roots have had no problems with this change... but the rest of my hair... well, it's been quite a challenge getting the rest to gray. So now I have a new problem... grey roots with the rest fading to either a green tent or a gold tint. I should've just let the gray come through 20 years ago. I have been told that I do look younger though whether it's grey or blonde, but I've never gotten it to the level of gray in this vid. This will be my last attempt.

i suspect I may have the same situation with my hair as tour having with your hair. I'm a little scared, all these years I've been covering my grey roots only to go into a different direction and BECOME grey, it's a chance of thinking.

I am soooooooo glad you did this video. I am 37 and I am mostly white in the front and salt and pepper in the back. I dyed my hair blonde and have been blonde for 2 years but I want to grow out my natural hair and don't want it to look funky or chop off all my hair. I did the wella t14 and it did tone down the gold in my hair but I want what you have 😉. I will be going tomorrow to get the color. Thank you ❤️
Hi Kristi, I'm so so thankful for this video!!! I recently let my hair dye from a toffee brown to a (darker) grey and I had similar problems as you had. After the first time bleaching and dyeing it looked almost perfect (my profile photo was shot directly after) but there were still some renitent strands in the lenght which lost the color very quickly. So I got bleached and dyed all ends again (this time with olaplex). Everything worked out pretty fine and I was then looking for a product to maintain the grey color. After watching hundreds of TH-cam videos I bought the Clairol Shimmer Lights Shampoo. But what it did, it took out all the grey from my ends! So I was blonde again! Since then I've been using the Roux Fanci Full Rinse (silver lining) after each washing. It works but it is a hassle! After watching your 'Grey Hair Video', I instantly ordered the Wella 050 and it arrived yesterday. Yay! Now I just need to buy a developer to start it by myself. I hope it's gonna work out as it does on your hair... Just in case you have any plus advice which isn't mentioned in the video, it would be great. Thank you so much! Corinna from Hamburg, Germany
I colour my hair with 050 have been doing it for a few months now. Hard colour to maintain but when you find the right products it's easy, fanci full in true steel is brilliant & a really blue toner, not purple a blue toner! Directions silver toner it's dark blue an keeps the colour looking fresh! It's a gorgeous colour I love it! Xxx
I have wella 050 in my hair right now I really love it. What other things did you do to maintain it?
+Cam Cam +Cam Cam when I was my hair I was with a colour save shampoo first to remove the dirt then I go in with a blue/purple shampoo to add more colour back in, but one thing I've found keeps my colour lasting the longest is mixing my favourite conditioner with a blue based toner an using that, leave it on for five mins an wash off, but I highly recommend the fanci full rinse for when it's getting close to when you need to recolour. Have you tried the directions silver toner? It's dark blue an it's amazing!!

You didn't say this, but does it look ombré in real life? It looks lighter at the top and darker at the bottom, though I love it either way!

Ok so after attempting to get silver for a very long time. It always turned out too green or just flat out didn't work. Found your video when my sister agreed to try one more time. It worked absolutely perfect!!! Thank you for sharing this, you are magic.

I tried dying my hair silver a couple months ago with the pravana silver and was so excited but then it turned out more blue that silver and only took to one side of my head, I was so disappointed but then I found your video and decided to try this. I did it last night and omg my hair is such a pretty shade of gunmetal silver so really, thank you so so so much for posting this!

This is great!! I wish I had seen your tutorial first. I used T18 instead of 14 and added half a bottle of the 050 to it. I used 10 vol, so as just to front is ok, but the back seems like it didn't grab the toner at all, still seems a little beige. Do you recommend I start over using your method, and one question - did you put the 050 over the T14 or rinse the T14 out first and then apply the 050? Thanks in advance and great job!!!!!!
I love that you jumped right in and started the info, told which toners you used, and volume. And I love the color you ended up with! I was doing gray for about a year, and it was s so hard to get it and keep it, with the new, brunette growth. Ugh... anyway, I've always used t14 for mine, but I'm out and only have a tiny bit left of 050, and needed to find on TH-cam if it's blue based, and if it works good to tone, plus a touch of gray. But I thought when I added it before to color with regular color, it went warm. ? I can't recall exactly. But I love the cool toned color you got.

Beautiful hair! I have had to use the 050 as a toner over blonde because the T18 toner and others doesn't stay in my hair past a week, of course I don't leave the 050 in that long. But now, I want to go gray and plan to do this.
Thanks for this video. I used the 050 with T10 and my hair did turn light silver/grey. Next time I will try the rest of the 050 without T10 . I am happy with the results. Hopefully the color will last 4-8wks 👍😍
Looks amazing! Just so you know, you could have just done the t14 with 2 parts developer and added the 050 in with it as it’s an additive colour, would have turned out the same just saves you using developer 2 times 😊
Thank you so much for doing this video! I went to the salon to get my hair done grey with highlights and low lights to get some definition. But with two washes the grey toner they used washed out. So I’m hoping the 050 wella box dye will work and will do a good job holding the grey
Thank you so much for this video Kristi!! I did exactly what you did and I actually ended up getting my hair more grey than my hairstylist did, so now I don't have to pay a ton of money just to go get my hair toned that will last until one wash. For me, this toner lasted for about 5 or 6 washes and there was still quite a bit of ashy tone left to my hair.
This is awesome! I'm glad I know this now. I've used the Wella cooling violet 050 just to tone bleached hair but would've never guessed it would color hair such a beautiful grey tone.

Did exactly what you said and the highlights grabbed a tad of blue but know in few shampoos will fade but the darker gray came out perfecto
I just want to make sure I got the steps right: you got it to a workable light blonde then use 2:1 developer and Wella 050 to get to the darker grey/silver that you have? Did you see your hair fading quickly after? How frequently did you wash your hair? Did you see it turning any green/blue colors over time?
I've had some run-ins with other color products (like your suggested maintenance from your stylist) and these were issues I faced. I'm looking for the best product solution.
I found that even with this color I was having to retone my hair at least once every two weeks and that was with only washing once every 3-4 days.
You have the steps correct. It was easy to do but grey hair is just simply the most difficult hair color to maintain that I've ever had. I had to give it up because my hair was just so damaged

Thank you SO much for this video. My 14yo has been wanting to try grey hair and I've been racking my brain and researching how to make that happen for her. We're lucky enough that our Sally's carries T050. I was wondering if you applied it to your hair while it was damp or if you dried it first? The toner directions on Wella's site say towel-dried hair, but I don't know if the color would deposit better on dry hair.

You should have put the additive in the T14, as it it basically color shots. It counteracts the gold tone in the coloring process.

This came out soo good, i did it myself after trying soo many different ways and it worked well! BUT... it was soo hard to maintain..after 3 days it was fading and the yellow started coming through. If you have any tips, let us know..... i tried re toning and it just messed with the color too much. But great video!!! Thanks!!
050 cooling violet toner is the best for steele gray. Toner doesn't act as a dye it will fade in 4 weeks and leave hair pale ash blonde. If your hair is already the palest you can achieve silver with a purple dye as purple cancels out the yellow brass and is great for silver hair.

I did this and it worked!! Although my hair was orange, it changed it to a beautiful ash/gray platinum. with time, I will get it to this tone of gray, just need one more bleach cycle. It works because the blue in the 050 will remove the orange color. ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

This grey hair struggle is SO REAL! I can't wait to try what seems to be the magic formula. My hairdresser uses Pravana Vivids and honestly it fades after about 3 washes and then I'm just left with blonde. uggh!! Quick question: does this wella tend to fade fast? are you using anything special to keep it from fading as fast?

This was SO helpful I've been looking forever to find a simple explanation to do this!! I've wanted my hair silver for years and I used titanium dye from Sally's and it came out Purple/Blue!!
A great in between is Roux Fanci Full color mousse 42 in silver lining. If you want a darker steel gray number 41 in True Steel. I use both and play around but use Pravana gray. Your hair must be very light or you will have blue hair. Please go in steps and don't ruin your hair.
this is a fantastic video extremely helpful and I loved the tip of using wella t14 prior to 050. Haven't seen that in any other vid and it's a great tip. your hair and make up look fabulous hope I can get mine to look half as great. and I love the effect the darker blonde in your ends made in the finished look. it's like ombre

What do you mean 2 part developer to one part toner?
+lilabetancur it's like if you use half a cup of toner use a full cup of developer. whatever amount you use of toner use double that in developer

how long did this last? other people said it lasted 4-5 washes but I always advise people to wash your hair in cold water with color safe shampoo and then pin it up while they shower

Did you wash off the Wella T14 after the 15 minutes and then applied the Wella 050 or did you just add the wella 050 after the first 15 minutes and left both together for another 20 minutes?

Holy mug you're the second video with way better advice than the chicks at Sally's (I know they're not pros so I'm thinking of getting a job there cause I've messed with my hair a lot haha). My question is: Did it dry your hair a little? Cause I've seen someone mixing it but got lighter results vs you got cool ass grey. But before toning and adding just wanted to prep.

The bleached ends will suck in that 050 so it will look a bit darker… but hers has a kind of ombré effect and looks good.
The good thing is these DO FADE so if it looks a little darker on the ends of bleached hair that will fade nicely :)
I like that u used t14 by itself then the 050... i was told to use it all together and it left my hair looking brown. I will try it ur way! Btw ur adorable lol

another good way to do this is to get to a blonde/yellow tone then apply a mixture of 20 developer with the one 'n only argan oil hair color in the shade 10A with 4 caps full the wella O50 additive apply and leave for 45 minutes to an hr and rinse with cold water

If you use shimmer lights purple shampoo for 15 minutes you can get the silver and skip the wella t18. Saves so much money and time
