How To Hand Whistle, aka Wild Whistle, Owl Hoot, Hand Flute

Learn hand whistling or hand flute. This 3-minute video shows you two ways to do it, plus how to vary the pitch. It's a very distinct sound. In its basic form it sounds similar to an owl's hoot. Great for signaling. Very distinct and very loud.

Try blowing harder, softer, and everything in between. Try slightly different angles of blowing. Good luck!

Sometimes it's tricky to learn. Just keep trying. Try many slight variations... Blow a little harder, a little softer, vary the angle slightly, change the shape of your lips slightly. Be sure there are no holes between your fingers for air to escape. If you ever get the slightest little hoot, then focus on how you did it that time and start improving. Good luck!!!

This is how one starts learning to play the hand flute and from there on the sky is the limit. Once you get the first few tones, it's a matter of lots of practice, practice, practice and one day maybe you can follow in Mitsuhiro Mori's footsteps and play pieces like Zigeunerweisen on the hand flute.

Hi! Try a wide range of blowing force and slightly different angles of blowing. Also, try lotion or water on your hands. It might help you seal up air leakage between your fingers better. Good luck!

I feel like my fingers are too skinny & small to make a big enough air tight cavern

I've seen people with small skinny hands do it, so it is possible. Try it with wet hands. Sometimes that helps you seal up the air better.
