Owned a a 65 when I was 15 never finished it and sold it ,swapped the 196 out for 304 and painted it midnight blue, always been a dream to own one like that.

Outstanding. My first vehicle was a 65 Scout 2wd. No heater, no radio, but it did have a throttle from the dash. I drove that thing for several years with only 1 wheel bearing replaced. It has the 1/2 v8 with 3 speed on the floor and 4.11 gears and firestone recap mud tires on the back. Back in 1969 that was high cotton. I paid an older gent $300. cash drove it for 2 years and sold it to a used car lot for $350. Take care and God bless.
I had a 65 that I bought from an older guy who bought it new in Maine when he lived there. I bought it from him in 69 for $300. He had just put in a new wiring harness & a tune up. I drove the snot out of that thing for 2 years & sold it to a used car dealer for $350. It did not have a heater as it was an option & it had a throttle that came out of the dash, twin 10 gallon tanks.
Ha, got a kick out of your comment. The days of this thing going to work are over. It doesn't have to prove anything to no one. It is just a piece of Americana. I will say that I have used a Scout on trails above 10,000 ft with this engine and it never got stuck. 4.10 gearing and a good locker.

The steering is better than I expected it to be. Used a hydroboost from a astro van that works off the steering pump to give me the power brakes. Got it from a Elliott Sydnam who builds these systems for you. You can find him on the net....

Hello Pete, I can't find info on my source for the headliner. I did buy via a dealer I find on the net. The color is gray and it is a fine produce. I do have info on a insulation product that I used. It is called "EZ Cool or EZCOOL.US. I placed this trough out and on the inside roof before liner. Note: I ran 1/2" aluminum C channel down both sides of roof to give me a place to tuck liner into. Used epoxy to glue channel to roof. Cut sections to fit between roof supports and a piece in back.
Those are "Mud King" 32 X 11.5 R15 LT M&S tires. The wheels I got in a junk yard that are from a 95/96 Ford F150. I only drive on the road and they make a lot of noise with the aggressive tread pattern so when it comes time to replace them I will get the same size but something a little less aggressive so I can listen to the music....

Scout only made about 200 miles of trip before I had a incident with a hood latch. You probable know where this is going. Left a service station and the hood flew up at about 50 mph. The hood was the only thing damaged. Now have another hood and it will be complete next week. Made a trade with Mr. Conrod in Grant Co. He got a bunch of parts and I got a hood. The bright side I get to keep it around here for another year. I will try to make the trip next summer
They are Dana 44 axles with 4.09 gearing. One other thing about the wheels. I had to have the center hub turned on a lathe as the locking hub is a bit larger then the ford hub. Same bolt pattern but smaller dia. hub....

Hey, that's great. Remember to have fun while you work on it. If thinks get really tough, and they will walk away for a day or so and then go back at it when you will be enjoying the work. Did I see that right,looked like it had rear wheel locking hubs.Those things were the most cold blooded things to start in the North country in winter time.My brother had one and he beat the crap out of it and it would go,and go,and go.I knew a guy that had a Rambler American that he bought from a guy who put a 196 motor in it,that was in the early 70s.I think the Scout was Toyota's competition to the Land Cruiser back in the day.

Go to Just Internationals and read thread by "roadworthy" dated 04/10/2011 and read the 47th post. The chrome plating is cheap and I ended up sanding and painting but they where the best thing I came up with to keep from mounting to door.....

It has the 4 cylinder 196 with the original T-15 3 speed and dual shift transfer case. I have an engine for you if you want to go get it. It is the 152 or 196 not 100% sure. It was in this Scout before I did rebuild. You will have to go to Ocala Fl. to pick it up. I got it to run before I pulled it out. I might have the carburetor. It's on a engine stand and you can have that to. If you want its yours....

Ron, Hello! i am an excited owner of a '79 international scout II. its in decent shape, but needs a lot of body work. everything under the hood is great, but when i went to bleed the brakes, nothing came out of the back two. the reservoir is full, and there doesn't seem to be any leaks in the break lines. can you give me any suggestions?

I have 1965 scout and i plan on putting a 4inch lift on it. It has a little 4 cylinder. Trying to decide if I should keep it or go to the v8 so I can actually high way speeds or do you think the little 4 cylinder could get up to 55mph with the lift and bigger tires?
Where did you find those mirrors I've been look looking for something like them with no luck. I am currently rebuilding (sadly not restoring) a 69 800a and I've been looking for something that's off of the doors.

Great looking Scout! You really knocked it out of the park. I just picked up a '63 and hope it looks half as good as this one. I do have a random question, how did you go about filling the steering wheel? I have a few cracks in mine as well and I would hate to pass for another. Thanks!
Hi Brian, thanks for your comments. It's been lots of fun. This is what I did with the wheel. Take a thin cutting wheel on a air grinder or a dremel and cut into every crack. You want it widened out the crack a little bit and deepened it. I then used an epoxy called "Marine Tex" to fill in all the cracks. It needs to be a product that is tuff but also sandable. Sand the hole wheel flush and spray with a rattle can black epoxy paint. That's about it. It has held up good. Enjoy your project...
Ron, sorry to hear you sold the 65' Scout. I just purchased one last weekend and working on the long road to sand it down. Was wondering the colors you used on yours? I love the exterior and interior colors. Any help would be great.
My two cents...Low range means more torque. If your in two wheel you have increased torque going to just one drive shaft. If your engine is 152 don't think anything will break. 345 or 392 be a little careful......
Scout II V8 chassis with modified slant 4 engine mounts... not sure why there weren't any alternatives to mounting the body support so high in the back for both end caps. I would have like to see the discussion on that as looking at a side step from Jegs doesn't really appeal to me. You really don't have any clearance issues... even mounting a Scout II tank should not have been very difficult. Otherwise, I really like a lot of what you did! Kudos!
Kalkas53 Don't see many vehicles made in the early 60's that don't have rust. Especially utility vehicles that have been worked hard on farms and in the mud. They have issues where to be expected. Mainly areas that mud was flung up under the wheel wells and left for the last 60 years. The body pannels prone to rust are available new. With a little TLC they come back to life.

Ron, great restoration. It looks like it just rolled of the factory assembly line. I just bought the same exact vehicle and would like to restore it also. Hello! i am an excited owner of a '79 international scout II. its in decent shape, but needs a lot of body work. everything under the hood is great, but when i went to bleed the brakes, nothing came out of the back two. the reservoir is full, and there doesn't seem to be any leaks in the break lines. can you give me any suggestions?

I have 1965 scout and i plan on putting a 4inch lift on it. It has a little 4 cylinder. Trying to decide if I should keep it or go to the v8 so I can actually high way speeds or do you think the little 4 cylinder could get up to 55mph with the lift and bigger tires?
Where did you find those mirrors I've been look looking for something like them with no luck. I am currently rebuilding (sadly not restoring) a 69 800a and I've been looking for something that's off of the doors.

Great looking Scout! You really knocked it out of the park. I just picked up a '63 and hope it looks half as good as this one. I do have a random question, how did you go about filling the steering wheel? I have a few cracks in mine as well and I would hate to pass for another. Thanks!
Hi Brian, thanks for your comments. It's been lots of fun. This is what I did with the wheel. Take a thin cutting wheel on a air grinder or a dremel and cut into every crack. You want it widened out the crack a little bit and deepened it. I then used an epoxy called "Marine Tex" to fill in all the cracks. It needs to be a product that is tuff but also sandable. Sand the hole wheel flush and spray with a rattle can black epoxy paint. That's about it. It has held up good. Enjoy your project...
Ron, sorry to hear you sold the 65' Scout. I just purchased one last weekend and working on the long road to sand it down. Was wondering the colors you used on yours? I love the exterior and interior colors. Any help would be great.

My two cents...Low range means more torque. If your in two wheel you have increased torque going to just one drive shaft. If your engine is 152 don't think anything will break. 345 or 392 be a little careful......
Scout II V8 chassis with modified slant 4 engine mounts... not sure why there weren't any alternatives to mounting the body support so high in the back for both end caps. I would have like to see the discussion on that as looking at a side step from Jegs doesn't really appeal to me. You really don't have any clearance issues... even mounting a Scout II tank should not have been very difficult. Otherwise, I really like a lot of what you did! Kudos!

Don't see many vehicles made in the early 60's that don't have rust. Especially utility vehicles that have been worked hard on farms and in the mud. They have issues where to be expected. Mainly areas that mud was flung up under the wheel wells and left for the last 60 years. The body pannels prone to rust are available new. With a little TLC they come back to life.
