  • We are often asked how tall people will fit into various Hilleberg tents, and which models are the best choices. In this video, our own tall (6'6" or 2m) employee, Jon, shows you how he fits in some of our different tents and talks about how to choose the right model or models for you. He also shares tips that make his taller-in-a-tent life easier.

    Great video, I am 1.92m and using Akto and Nallo3. Nallo3 is a better option than Nallo2 for taller people as 2p tent, with minimal weight difference. Thanks for the tip on pitching the footends of inner and outer tent separately of the Nallo, will try it out this summer. For the Akto, the headspace above the head when sleeping is a bit tight when sleeping on a thicker (7cm) mattress, as your face gets really close to the (sagging) innertent. But its possible to tighten the tent so that it does not touch your face, its just getting close and thus more like a comfort feeling issue. Anyway, I agree that both tents are really good for me as taller person. The golden tip is of course to use a packtowel, and wipe quickly the tent from condensation first thing getting out of your sleeping bag.

    I had an Allak for a few years and around 100 nights in different conditions. I was never really satisfied with the length even when I slept in it alone. Anf when it was windy it was even worse. I always had the inner tent in my face and my toes touching with a wet sleeping bag as a result. I am 190 cm.
    All Hilleberg tents that I´ve tried are really good in quality and function except for length. 10 more cm would be great on a tent like Allak. Now I have the Kaitum 2 GT and 3 GT and those are fine thanks to the straight inner walls at the head and feet but they are heavy.
    This video is misleading in my opinion. I hope Hilleberg will make a light tent for tall people sometime.

    It's a massive point about the vertical walls and the shoe size. I'm 191cm, and I bough a tent with 215 inner space. But it was still way too small because the height tapers down to the end, so my head and toes both touch the inner tent walls. Not nice. Luckily it was a cheap one so I can now look for something more perfect.

      @jariperho 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I disagree. Jon simply seems content with getting his legs and forehead wet. The rain jacket really compresses his bag's footbox. He doesn't even use a pillow. You can also clearly see him rubbing against the Allak's inner tent despite him saying he doesn't feel it, and has to carry a 575 gram bivy along with a tent that's just too short for him. Hilleberg tents are great, but there simply are hassle-free options for the taller folk. Vertical or very steep end walls get a thumbs up from me. 👍🏻

    • @naturecallsoutdoors
      @naturecallsoutdoors 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure there are tents that do fit taller people and accomplish what you are talking about, even in the Hilleberg line. Talking basic design and fabric theory though you can't find a tougher tent that weighs what they do. I have a Tarp tent, Big Agnes and REI tent that are great and fit tall pretty nice, are lighter, but I wouldn't trust them in winds over 40 mph without staying up all night, or having a snow load over 3 inches. And none of them shed water like the Kerlon although some of the fabrics are pretty great the first year, my Hilleberg gear holds its newness for more than a decade, which I can't say for the others. Lots of great tent manufacturers though. Jon doesn't use a pillow by the way...I do though.

      Nature Calls Backpacking Go on then, name the Hilleberg one man, lightweight tents that best suit the ‘bigger’ man ? Lying on my front with feet stretched out and a sleeping bag over them makes the Unna too short. That’s a shame because I was desperate for it to fit. Will the Soulo be better, or do I need to move up the the 2 man 3kg beauties ?

    • @naturecallsoutdoors
      @naturecallsoutdoors 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see what you are saying really. I personally like the Kaitum line and will take the added weight for the design. I have had a good experience with the Niak and Enan, but they are a lot like all my other tents and the end where the feet are. The Kaitum has that vertical wall. The Soulo is used by so many in the UK and they have no complaints, and some are tall guys. I have become pretty good at the set and working the ventilation of all tents. I have found that I put the feet to the leeward if I think there will be a lot of condensation. And I use all my guylines regardless. Going this week with a Naturehike Cloud 3, kind of a BA Fly Creek with a crossbar, and had to add lines and stakes to the kit already. Let me know more of you thoughts if you pick up something.

    • @Super.Quasar
      @Super.Quasar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nature Calls Backpacking Thanks, Bruce. Been watching your videos again this morning (UK) and must compliment you on your results. I already have a Keron 4 and it’s a fabulous tent, the best imho because of its width. On occasion, I will relocate one set of toggles to the end elastics (so two sets of toggles on one set of elastics) and the remaining toggles to the centre. This provides a massive vestibule for cooking and entertaining, dwarfing the vestibule on the GT whilst at the same time having separate and protected sleeping quarters for one. You can only do this with the Keron 4s.
      Be good for you to show this on a Nature Calls video along with your ‘Kaitum trick’ of opening up the whole end of the Keron 4.
      BTW, when we’re camped near the car, my wife insists on a portable loo for night use and that’ll fit in a vestibule. No good for the hill though. 🧝‍♀️
      Back to tent sizing : I prefer to use an Exped Lite 30” mat and of the one man tents only the Unna will accommodate the width of the mat. ATB.

    I am 6’4” and used to have the Soulo but at 220cm, personally it was to cramped for me so I swapped it for the Unna at 230cm. Even the Unna can feel to short in length, I would love if Hilleberg made it 10cm longer. When I use it with the inner tent my bag always touches the ends creating a wet sleeping bag. I now have a customised bath tub groundsheet (by ookworks) which I use instead of the inner so the tent doesn’t feel so restrictive. But during summer months this option is not possible due to midges.

    Hey Jon, nice vid! I love Hillies, they are the best tents made!
    Question for you; which tent do you like the most for 2 people (me:5'10" and gf:5'6") mostly for stronger winds, longer thru-hikes and comfort. I live in Bend, OR when home and she lives in Finland. We will be doing a lot of Thru hikes in Northern Sweden, Norway and Finland this summer/fall. I pretty much know all the models and kinda have narrowed it down to Staika; but also considering Tarra, NG3GT, Kaitum or Allak 3. Thoughts? Also, for hiking longer distances and summer use (with wind and rain), which do you recommend? Niak? Rogan? Anaris? Thoughts?
    Thanks!

    • @HillebergTentmaker
      @HillebergTentmaker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello TheTrailDancer
      The Staika is a great tent. Very comfortable and stable. If you were looking to have a lighter tent, for thru hikes, the Kaitum is another great option. It is an all-season tent so can handle nasty weather. It also has vertical inner tent walls, 2 vestibules, and 2 entrances for lots of comfort. Tunnel tents have the best space to weight ratio and that helps achieve comfort on long hikes.
      For hiking longer distances and summer use with wind and rain, I really like the new Anaris. That is a trekking pole supported tent, so make sure to account for that, but it makes it very lightweight and there is lots of space for 2 people and gear as well.
      You can also email us at tentmaker@hilleberg.com or give us a call to talk more details.
      Hope that helps,
      Jon

    • @TheTrailDancer
      @TheTrailDancer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya the Anaris looks great! Looking forward to possibly getting one!!! I’ve set up nearly all of these tents and l love the Tarra, but it’s heavy. Free standing are nice and the Staika ticks so many boxes. However, the Kaitum GT is like a palace or the Kerons, but I don’t think I’ll ever use the full capabilities of the Keron. Petra recommended the NG3GT at a show I met her at, but the angled back wall is not my fav. 😬 thanks for your thoughts.

    Good video, so everybody can make their own conclusions.
    Just turn of the audio, it sais the opposite of what is shown in the video.
    I have an Allak 3, on paper that is 230cm in lenght.
    But, I am a side sleeper on a 9cm mat.
    So I loose a lot of this 230cm in the height where I actually am in the tent.
    I am 180cm but with the loft of the sleeping bag I touch the wall with the head and feet.
    In the audio of this video it sais that is no problem, but it is a problem to me.
    Since I use it only as a one person tent I sleep diagonally and that is fine.

      Hey swamp gal. Our "Labels" just help categorize our tents. It divides them into Black, Red, Yellow, or Blue, Labels, each representing a performance range based on materials, construction or both,. Such as all-season vs 3-season tents. Hope that helps clarify. You can learn more about it at hilleberg.com/about-our-tents/label-system/

      Closest to a tiny, 2 person, 4-season, tent at that height range is probably the MSR Advance Pro 2. It's a one trick pony, so there will be sacrifices.

      Once it is pegged out properly around the perimeter the tension on the zippers and poles are gone, that is why they are no longer needed then if you don't want it there. But most people just leave it there since when the tent is set up nicely the strap is close to the ground and not really something you trip over. :)

    Can’t understand why Hilleberg design tents that only just fit the 6ft+ person. Jon seems happy to have his head and feet touching the ends of the tent where there’s moisture to contend with. That shouldn’t be necessary in a good design.
    I notice that he doesn’t use a pillow which needs another 6” in length. Further, when there’s high winds on any tent it causes reduced length and touching the inner causing wet fabric and subsequently wet sleeping bags. The flappy nature of Hilleberg’s undersized tents causes the inners to be constantly impacting on one’s head, disturbing sleep. The chamfered end of the Nammatj makes wet bags unavoidable. Really disappointing.
    Suggest you show more tent sizing videos with the Soulo and the Unna where Jon is using his backpack as a pillow. I’ve no idea why you skimp on tent lengths so much as it’s far more important to space to enjoy the accommodation rather being crammed in.
    I have a Keron 4 and sold a Nammatj GT, so I do have some experience to base my opinions on. I’d like a Soulo, but having tried an Unna I suspect it’ll be too short. Great detailing and fabrics in all the tents and I’m a participating admirer and hopefully you’ll take my thoughts as constructive criticism.

      @Super.Quasar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Outdoor Layne Not if you’re using your backpack as a pillow, maybe. Do that at least 50% of the time myself. Point I’m trying to get over is everybody has always known that if you want a comfortable 1 man tent then you buy a two man tent. It’s not the floor size that matters, it’s 10”, 25cm, above the floor where your feet and head touch the curve of the tent. Deduct from that the 2”+ that the fabric reduces the space under the pressure of the wind. Just sayin’.

    • @HillebergTentmaker
      @HillebergTentmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hello QCVT, this is Jon from Hilleberg. No magic trick, just personal preference. The Thermarest NeoAir Xlite sleeping pad, in Large, is listed as 77 in/196 cm long by 25 in/63 cm wide. I am 6'6" or 78 inches/198 cm. When I bought the NeoAir Xlite sleeping pad, I gave it a lot of thought. I tried it out and it fit me and what I wanted from that pad. I was looking for a very light sleeping pad that is good for side sleepers like myself. The NeoAir Xlite fit those needs, and it did not matter to me if it was an inch shorter than my exact same length because I do not sleep in a perfect statue position. So those are the dimensions of my sleeping system in the video and what I personally chose and use.
      As for sleeping bag length, I have always used “long” versions, like in the video, and those are normally 77 or 78 inches /196 or 197 cm.
      Also sleeping pad and bag length, like tent sizing, is a personal choice. Some ultralight hikers will use half-length sleeping pads that only cover their back/hips, or I know some people that will sleep in a smaller quilt and puffy jacket as opposed to a full-length sleeping bag for their entire body, again to save weight.
      Hope that helps explain the measurements and why I chose what I did.
      All the best,
      Jon

    This is TOTAL Bullshit. If you are over 6ft you are def going get wet feet in these smaller models unless you cover your feet with a bag. Top tip from Hilleberg: pretent your feet are dry in the morning. Let me correct that statement for you: Akto is not a good option for tall people and you will not enjoy using it go for a bigger model.
    Plus I think we all know that turning up the footbox ain't gonna dry it out in cold wet conditions.
    Hilleberg are good and all but they are a bit on the heavy side and are ridiculously bulky pack sizes. Go DCF and give us another 20cm length option.

    Some of the ideas in this video would be fine if represented correctly. You can't say "I fit in this tent perfectly" when your head and feet push against the inner and outer and you need to put something on your head and feet. That's like saying: "I do fine without a tent, I just cover myself in a big nylon bag and pretend I'm comfortable".
    There's nothing comfortable or "perfect fitting" when you're so stretched you push against both ends of the tent. With respect, when you're trying to argue otherwise with music that's supposed to be relaxing you're only successful at making yourself look stupid.

    Do you sleep like a statue so you dont touch the tent inner with your legs or head? Without a pillow ar some stuff under your head ? Do you pitch arctic winter tent on the nice, flat grass? In reality you need at least 240cm of inner lenght to get comfy if you want to fit well. This review is worthless in smooth and shiny weather conditions.
