Well, the majority of the time it's said more as some type of pleasantry than as a genuine question anyway. I think we're all good sticking with, "fine."

For me personally, I think it's less "I don't feel comfortable talking about it" and more "You ask me that, but I don't know if you really care or if you're just asking because it's considered the polite thing to do".

I'm an introvert but when I'm in a talking mood I talk a lot (to my friends). The problem is, my voice is really monotone so people often don't hear me well, I mess up my words because I speak quickly and I jump from a topic to topic before finishing my sentences. It's a mess. :DDDD However, I figured hand gestures and imitating the words I can't remember is an effective way to communicate.

If it's any consolation to you, as an (introvert) librarian I can assure you a lot of people tend to ask that same question or something similar, so I don't think much of it and proceed to ask 'what title are you looking for?', because I assume they mean a specific book. As far as awkard situations go, believe me, I've heard much, much worse.

I feel this. If only it's socially acceptable to just say, "we don't really have to talk, you can stop. You don't have to talk to me. I'm totally fine with the silence" to anyone trying to make small talk with me. It's really so much more refreshing and meaningful to me if I'm with someone whom I can be comfortable enough to sit in silence with.

My thoughts as an introvert:
-I wish this person would stop talking and leave me alone
-I'm bored, I will just nod and smile like I'm paying attention
-I'm busy but busy means I just want to ignore you and the entire world for the next few years
-I will think about it, more like I won't and make an answer up the next time we talk right on the spot
-Tell me the date of the event so I can try to actively avoid it every chance I get because people bug me.
(The list goes on. This is mostly toward people I don't really like to spend time with. I have a few though that I genuinely love to spend time with any chance I get.)

It sucks because the more you like someone, the more you want to avoid them because you feel like you'll screw everything up.
So true. For me, that includes them as well as anyone they may be associated with because I fear I might screw up in front of one of their friends and then they go back and talk about my screw up to said person.

Me: "Imma say Hello because I didn't expect to be greeted and could only react like that. Now I will spend my time thinking about if it was ok to say hello, or if it was too formal compared to the usual hi. I'll most definitely also blame myself and say I'm a horrible human being and totally untaught about any kind of social interaction. Excuse me while I think about the possibility of hello having a different meaning than hi, and me having indirectly insulted you now which I totally didn't mean to. I'll just awkwardly either look away or leave and not look you in the eye while I do so."

This is the real reason I've lived nearly thirty years in a foreign country & have never studied the language. I just don't have to know what other people are saying it interact with them. Such a huge relief. Go back to the US and everyone is so damned extroverted & in your face I can't wait to get back to where I can go days without having to speak to s much as a supermarket clerk.

Want to know my trick , I can't see with my glasses off, so everytime I had a speech I'd learn the subject and improvise my speech without a paper and just talk without my glasses on. That way I couldn't see anyone's face, and all my Teachers thought I was smart because I never used a paper to read off of and would literally lecture my class for almost 40 minutes. They didn't know that by taking my glasses off I wouldn't even be able to read off my paper or projector slides, the only downside to this trick is a you have to actually know what you're talking about in order to get a good grade. With this trick I ended up even being one of the better Speech Debaters in my class, I literally never got nervous.
I can’t handle random human interaction. All I can think about is “I’ve got to get away”.
I get bored very quickly
💯 oh maaannnnmm....small talk is one of the WORST things on the planet 🤣 “yawn, I’m bored, I don’t care, please shutup , you’re wasting my time” 👉 me in my head ANYtime I am forced to small talk to “be polite”.

I used to have a job that was 60% calling patients. I was always SO happy when they didn’t answer. My practiced voicemail skills are WAY better than my impromptu phone conversation skills.
I always let it ring, then listen to the voice mail, then call back if necessary!
I want to know what we’re talking about BEFORE I answer the phone.

Holy fuck yes! Everyone I know does that, which is especially annoying when they ask me a question then interrupt my answer, usually with another question that's completely unrelated to whatever I was trying to say.
Then when I counter-interrupt to finish my original thought, they get mad at me because I interrupted them, but can't understand why I suddenly just stop talking all together. I want to tell them, "I'm waiting for my turn to finish talking," when they ask what's wrong but of course I actually just say "Nothing."
