      Wow...that's so sad. While I can understand that the stress of being a pastors kid and to be faithful and perfect must have been difficult at best, I also think running from faith altogether is misplaced. I see people leave faith and become as fundamental in their atheism as they were in their belief. I was guilty of it. My point is..... freedom? Really? Nihilistic atheism ....no point at all to life? That's freedom? So the subjective goal for your life is hedonism? ok.
      Yeah....I guess I've lived long enough to know that there is some kind of a transcendent value system I can't run from. I can't deny that lying cheating and stealing is wrong even if I can get away with it. I also know that there arre great things about me as a human being, but there are a ton of horrible things about me as well...and I wonder how I deal with those things....sins...etc...when I know without a doubt that I am called to be better. Once again, values. Sin creates chaos in a way that I can't condone. Values are big to me. But if nothing matters...there is no value in anything...why talk at all? What are we doing here sharing thoughts if they hold no value at all?

    I was in my mid forties when I deconverted (from Christian fundamentalism). I went through the step of trying to find a kinder, gentler god by moving to evangelicalism, and even flirted for a short time with so-called "liberal" Christianity. I see much of my own journey in John's story.
    It was the hardest thing I ever did, and required re-evaluating everything I ever believed in. The process took years, not months. John is on an exciting pathway. My best to him.

    • @Octoberfurst
      @Octoberfurst 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I went through the same thing. For years I was a conservative Evangelical Christian. Then in my 40's I became tired of all the "us vs them" rhetoric, the strawman arguments against secular people and the blatant hypocrisy I saw, but ignored, on an almost daily basis from my fellow Evangelicals. So I became a liberal Christian for about 10 yrs until I started to ask myself, "Do I really believe this?" It was then I read Hitchens book "God is Not Great" and it changed my life. I saw religion for what is was---a scam and a lie. I am now a liberal atheist and am the happiest I have been in years.

My first real doubts began around 98 or 99 after reading the Bible all of the way through. But it was 2011 when I read John W. Loftus' book "Why I Became an Atheist" that I realized I didn't believe any of it anymore. Deconverted was the next book I read at that time. It was the perfect read for me at the time since I had been so involved in Christian music but found myself an atheist. I think the Hiddenness of God issue is the first one where I thought, "wow, this makes so much sense now." No wonder God is hidden. He doesn't exist.

      GOD HIDES FROM NO ONE ! JESUS said ; unless a man is BORN AGAIN (SPIRITUALLY ) HE CAN NOT SEE THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. GOD also said whoever seeks and searches for ME with ALL THEIR HEART WILL FIND ME . But the NATURAL MAN ( MAN OF FLESH AND BLOOD ) does not RECIEVE the things of the SPIRIT OF GOD for they are FOOLISHNESS TO HIM , nor can he KNOW them , because THEY ARE SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED . THE truth is SIR , you never BELIEVED AT ALL ! when you HEARD THE WORD , SATAN CAME IMMEDIATLY and took the WORD OUT OF YOUR HEART. And the REASON the GOSPEL IS HIDDEN FROM YOU IS---- SATAN WHO IS THE god of this world HAS BLINDED YOUR MIND TO NOT BELIEVE, lest the LIGHT of the GOSPEL of THE GLORY OF CHRIST , who is the IMAGE of GOD should shine on YOU. Remember this ; if the GOSPEL is HIDDEN it is Hidden from those who are PERISHING . SO BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART AND CONFESS WITH YOUR MOUTH , THE LORD JESUS, AND THAT GOD RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD AND YOU SHALL BE SAVED , FOR REAL MY FRIEND !!!

Walked around a bit, encountered a little chapel with a cross with a carved Jesus. Quite a number of people standing in front, admiring the flowers and decorations, probably silently praying a bit. Little me looks at the Jesus figure, points a finger straight at him and blurts our "Who's that?! And what's he doing up there?!?"

Even more, we and many living creatures (even bacteria and fungi) have built-in and programmed memory (like ROM in the computer motherboard), that give us the basic functions before we are born.

      If your point is that the human mind is incredible and that we don't understand consciousness, then I agree it's fascinating and that there's much for us to learn. That doesn't prove or even imply a God unless you expect a God to be there in the first place.

The same thing with all our ancestors, that we realize the absolute necessity for their existence.

    Also the lead singer of Jars of Clay was blacklisted from radio for just talking about the LGBT community. He didn’t confess anything or say he’s for Gay marriage, he only asked to the void why it’s seen as wrong for Christians. The Gungor group were kicked off radio as well for being more liberal and creative. Singing about natural things like sex and childbirth. My favorite song by them is “Beautiful things.” They left Christianity and have a Vice interview about it. I’m so sad they got shunned by the cult of Christian music. These bands made tons of money for these genres and now they’re kicked out. It’s sick! I grew up with these people and felt comfort then. I’m a Satanist now but I appreciate the memories

    As a former Christian, I can say the "Atheist" always came off as "HOSTILE or against God." But on another thought: My favorite concert memory is getting a Tract from these Christian protestors outside of the entrance to a Nine Inch Nails concert. One side had Anglican White Jesus with flowy blonde hair and a white robe, with flames behind him, and the other side had "Get out of HELL FREE" on the other side. My friends had walked by them and reused to take the tract. I hung back, went over, and said, "Hi" , took one, and then ran back to my friends and said, "Cool! Look what *I* just got!" They were jealous and wanted one, too. That was a funny memory.
