I’m in the DC area also and can confirm: $200k does not provide a LUXURIOUS lifestyle. It does allow for a comfortable living, but we’re not living in a million dollar home or driving new Mercedes or BMW’s.
I only take home 53.9% of my paycheck bc of all the same taxes you have, deductions for maxing out 401k and for health and life insurance, AND I mandatorily pay into my pension as well- an extra $400 a biweekly paycheck!!! Of my $9200 biweekly paycheck, I take home $5000.
I truly appreciate the honesty and transparency! It’s so refreshing! ❤️ My husband is also a veteran (coast guard) and we were able to buy our home with the VA benefits.

I appreciate your transparency... it will help others get their priorities straight. I am an old lady now and the 401k contribution was a very wise decision.
Thank you for sharing with your viewers. I agree with your definition of a luxurious lifestyle. Paying your bills, and saving money for retirement and investments is not a luxury, it's what everyone should do if they can afford it. It's sad that our standards are so low while many turn a blind eye to the increasing wealth of the 1%.
I think it’s two different, valid definitions of the same word. Being able to have money left over is a luxury. But, I’m sure most would agree it’s not luxurious or anyone’s real goal. With that said, people are being intentionally obtuse. They KNOW what they mean… but are using this word to dig at this couple. It’s a waste of time… although I acknowledge the pain and angst that got them to that place.
I live in a HCOL city in Canada and I completely understand what you mean by a 6-figure household income not going extremely far. Especially if you are just moving to a city like Vancouver or TO, meaning you have no access to the housing protected by rent control. 6 figures can afford you a comfortable lifestyle but not without budgeting and being intentional for sure, especially if you have children.
Your video is so relatable to me as someone who makes around 250k a year. It’s shocking what you’re left with after deductions and taxes- tbf, still more than most people, but I’m not taking home 20k a month! Also I’m not buying things left and right. My total fun money sinking fund is $280 per paycheck.
You are still relatable and sharing needed information. I am with you on making 6 figures. I live in South Carolina and make 6 figures and still sometimes live paycheck to paycheck due to cost of living and having kids and a dog.
My household is very similar and live in the DMV area as well. We know we are extremely blessed and thankful. I had to leave the DC Metro area for Bmore to allow the bread to stretch further.

Also curious how you chose James’ salary since it’s so much lower than yours? Did he need to stay at a certain income level for his disability or child support payments?
Before I make this comment keep in mind there is no hate only love for this channel and everything STS has done for the community thank you. 1st off I think the statement we make $285k and "can't live a luxurious life is absolute ridiculous" , Hannah your definition of a luxurious life is a on the top of the spectrum of what constitutes a luxurious life (There's levels to a luxurious life). Understand that you choose to not live a luxurious life and that's your choice , which again not saying its bad but its a choice. Understand its a perspective, what do I mean by this? Note that 1st off you "guys" are paying near $3k in child support w/o even having kids that is both yours. Again in any/most other dynamics that expense would be erase because you won't have any kids assuming a couple does not have kids. You choose to be with someone that is paying child support. Again not saying you shouldn't pay child support but keep that in perspective. 2nd the idea of paying your bills and saving is not a luxury, but the way you both are doing it is misleading. Yes I know both of you are paying bill and saving but come on saving 5k a month is wild. On top of that you are both maxing out your 401k and choosing when you want to live a luxurious life rather then not being able to at the current state. Note that if you took out $2k a month form that 5k, you almost wouldn't bat an eye to buying most things. And still while saying 3k month on top of everything else would more that guarantee you be a multimillionaire in the future (10+ mil). Understand that people are right when they gave you stick when you made that comment and understand that we are speaking in generality not your definition. In conclusion you are choosing when you want to live a "luxurious life" and your are making a choose NOT to do it now and rather maybe later. I argue that if one is MAXING out there 401k Paying off all their bills and still has $5k to invest/save A MONTH you are making a choice not to live luxuriously. Finally please understand the most people talk in generality and not by your definition.
@@nickvelasq all of this. They keep looking at the bottom line of what they have left to spend after already putting away tons of money into retirement, savings, and investments each month and then complain they can’t live a “luxurious” life. Take all of the money you put into your 401k, HYSA, and investments each month and you’d have plenty to spend on a luxurious life. You’re choosing to save instead of spend. The majority of people don’t have a choice like that.
Such an informative video! Thank you for this reality check. I thought I was overthinking about why I wasn’t doing “better” with budgeting our salary which is also similar. I do have three kids and they are expensive. You are totally relatable 🎉 Keep going.
I admire your transparency so much! You are walking the talk and it's awesome. I agree that you are living comfortably but not luxuriously. It's sad that so many Americans (and people globally) are not able to save at all, so they can't recognize the difference between healthy finances and actual luxury. A lot of my clients are elite earners and they live on a completely different planet when it comes to spending - that is true luxury
Everything you said is facts. I lived in Loudoun County. You’re not getting a new home less than $1.2mil. Townhouses are hitting $900k. We in Texas now. Hope to come back in the future.
I can see how you might be less relatable if you lived in Cleveland or Detroit on that income. But as someone who also lives in the DMV, you guys make a pretty normal income. A couple of GS 14s - that's nothing wild here.
As someone who lives in the dulles area, yeah... 200k is not a luxurious lifestyle. Some people cant even save with how much mortgages/rent/groceries are so high.
Thank you for your transparency! I will say that most households do not bring in $5k a month at all, much less in discretionary after tax income. It may not be ultra luxury but to most people living even in the DC area, it would be a privilege to max out a 401k, spend $3k on your kids, have 4 pets (which is basically like toddlers that never grow up) , purchase a $600k home and still have six figures left in disposable income at the end of the year. Believe it or not, your income is more than 95% of the country.
We make over 300k in the bay area and we definitely feel middle class. Home prices are 700k-mill here and thats not a huge house, just a 1500 sq ft home. Mortgage payment at current rates is going to be 6-7k. We have high balance student loans that are gonna take 3k to pay off in 12 years. We save a decent amount and take a few trips a year, but we also maybe go out to eat once a month to some place fancy and drive regular cars. I honestly felt less stressed when we didn't have student loan payments yet and had a mortgage in the midwest I could afford with a part-time income. We want a kid or 2 in the future, but the costs are painting a gloomy picture
The struggle is real. We make about the same. Live in Northern VA. Rent is almost 3k, childcare is about 2500/month. Its feels weird to say it, but its tough.
Echoing the majority of the comments: thank you for your transparency - especially on household expenses! 👏🏾 It truly is food for thought. 🤔 As a MoCo resident, it’s hard for me to imagine living in the DMV area (or East Coast) within the next 10 years. I feel as if the dollar can be stretched abroad as an “expat” and am weighing the options now for housing/retirement/vacations.
Thank you for this episode! My uisband and I are in NY and are basically at 6 figures but it also feels like we are penny pinching as well. I love how you all described your budget and how your business changed your lives. Thank you ❤
Nah, people are nuts because you really can not ball out in the DMV with just 300k. 300k is enough to have a house, a car, and be in a particular neighborhood comfortably (usually in Maryland or far out in Virginia or very specific parts of DC). Most people with 300k have debt in the area, and just paying your bills isn't a luxury. That is the bare minimum. Luxury means living extravagantly, not just paying your bills. Those people complaining are just justifying the status quo and saying, "You should be grateful you even have a job. You have no right to complain about anything."
You guys are freaking awesome. Keep doing what you’re doing. I love your content. I love even more how transparent you guys are with your lives. Luxury is always relative. Much of the 3rd world considers having AC, a refrigerator, a running car luxury. What one considers luxury is simply just keeping up with the "rich" Jones'. Once you start living the "luxurious life" you establish a new baseline, and once you are on par with that group of Jones', that baseline is no longer considered luxurious. Your next stage of Luxury will become owning a private yacht, an island home, a private jet or or an entire island, until that becomes the new baseline.... Congrats on beings above median point n the DMV!
Definitely! This is for extra curriculars like sports after school, but mostly travel. They live in a different state and visit for school breaks minimum 4x a year not including our independent trips to come see them. Over the holidays especially, flights get extra expensive on top of them flying solo and needing extra assistance from the airline.
That is about 67% of your total monthly. I am glad to see someone who is in that income to have a fixed cost of about 67-68% since we have about the same fixed income of 67% but at +$8200 a month (mostly single income since my husband is finishing his masters( tho he is debt free bc his parents are helping him)).
Yes we’re definitely thinking about that! The only benefit of keeping the loan is it helps our credit age and consistency for a higher score…but the interest is killing us 😂
Great video! I'm getting married April 2025 and my fiancé and I are trying to get a handle on how to split finances so thank you for this amazing video! Question. What do you guys do with the money left over after savings and investing? Split it?
Thank you! We try to zero out our budget so if there’s anything left over, 99% of the time we’ll put it in our HYSA or invest it! 1% of the time we’ll treat ourselves to a nice dinner or something for the house that we both want 💚
Haven’t watched the whole thing yet but just commenting on then first bit. I agree $200k really doesn’t go as far as you think these days. A big part being daycare (for my family)!
You guys are living in total La La land that you think you’re close to disaster by putting $4000 in savings away each month. The normal reality is to be in the red each month and not have anything saved and still have a disaster happening. Your rhetoric is honestly a slap in the face.
Knowing what you know today about purchasing a home, and the cost of owning vs renting… Would you recommend a young couple starting their life together to purchase a home or wait until they have paid off their school loans, and other debt they might have? Also, with your growth on social media and traveling to different states, would you move to a lower cost location? And what state?
Love what you guys do! Curious about how you have health insurance so cheap as a small business owner! We pay almost 3K a month for our coverage as a family of four and it’s crippling! Also curious about the rest of the income from your business- at what point would all of that money remaining after business expenses become your personal income?
hmm your point about the cost of a 600k home in DMV costing approximately 3.5k/mo is kind of misleading because it'll vary based on your down payment also does that include your home insurance? any PMI? i'm seeing a 605k home in DMV with 0% down at 3% with 6k/yr in property taxes puts your around 3k/mo
When people say you’re not relatable anymore it just means you’re moving to the next level of people that you can relate more with. People no matter the level are always looking for guidance and opportunities

$280K? That's my country's annual budget 😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Great video, hope you get that 100% P&T. Property tax exemption and chapter 35 for the kids is crazy value. O and champ VA for Healthcare.
Thank you!
That WNBA hoodie is so fire.
Great job on paying off your student loans! Next I would pause on saving or pull from your savings to knockout the 10.5% loan.
Yes we’re definitely thinking about that! The only benefit of keeping the loan is it helps our credit age and consistency for a higher score…but the interest is killing us 😂
Great video!
Soooo she’s the bread winner outrageously
Thank you for doing this!
Haven’t watched the whole thing yet but just commenting on then first bit. I agree $200k really doesn’t go as far as you think these days. A big part being daycare (for my family)!
I was paying close to $3000 a month for 2 kids for 5 days a week, more than my mortgage.
@@Patriot-nz5lzme too, when they were younger it was a little bit over $3000. They’re pre schoolers now and it’s $2600 😖
she is amazing.. paying so much for his kids.
That’s all I could see🤑
Love the content. Just out of curiosity, any pushback from the TwoCentsPBS channel when you chose your podcast name?
No, there are hundreds of podcasts called Two Cents and it’s not trademarked. We are Two Cents by Salary Transparent Street 💚
I love this!
I have never met a veteran who isn't on disability just saying
Disability from what?
When I first read 285k I'm thinking it's a lot. Then you said DC Metro area 😂
You guys are living in total La La land that you think you’re close to disaster by putting $4000 in savings away each month. The normal reality is to be in the red each month and not have anything saved and still have a disaster happening. Your rhetoric is honestly a slap in the face.
I just had to leave a comment to say what a cute couple you are and thanks for the video 🫶🏾
Will you do a tax season episode? This was so relatable to my life. I am curious how tax season looks like
Beautiful couple ❤ great video
i want to see what the house looks like
15K a month is definitely enough to live a luxurious life.
Random question, are yall watching Love Is Blind this season? It's in the DMV area. If not, what kinds of things do yall watch together?
Do you upload your podcast on Spotify? I can't find it:(
Yes it’s up there! 💚 open.spotify.com/show/4fmrMOou03SIoD7fUd7TsZ?si=aKVshinyRw2PbR7q7aoOnw
This is it good job 👏
Thanks for being transparent on income/expenses. Hope the babies mama's don't see this video and decide to submit for more CS $$. love the channel..
Can you explain more about paying insurance on your debt? I’ve never heard of that before!
What does hannah do for a living?
They both run the channel
This content.
hmm your point about the cost of a 600k home in DMV costing approximately 3.5k/mo is kind of misleading because it'll vary based on your down payment
also does that include your home insurance? any PMI? i'm seeing a 605k home in DMV with 0% down at 3% with 6k/yr in property taxes puts your around 3k/mo
Capital one is actually 4.1% now
Thanks for the transparency
Happy for them
So you have credit card debt or you use it like a debt card?
This was great! Do you just find an accounting firm or payroll business for the official business paystubs?
