A $200 Seiko isn't inherently mediocre and cheaply produced, only relative to more expensive pieces. What constitutes "so mediocre...that you don't have to spent time on them" varies per person.

Maybe a good way to review such a collection is think of this as a base from which to build. Not advising to shitcan the lot, but use it as a way to explore other watch options. I do mentoring in a completely non-related field outside of horology, and I try to bring in several positives and several things to "work on." Leave a guy with some dignity for god sake. Archie dishes it out, but can't take it.
The Bulova is a low-mid tier watch. I had the a $350 Bulova Chronograph and a $900 Bulova Accutron and the pawn shop didn’t even want to look at them. Fossil? A bum wouldn’t trade you his soup for that.
While I'm not a fan of the watches in this collection, the only one I'd consider complete garbage is the fossil. Even then it's not like it's a timex or anything like that. Seiko, Orient, and Bulova are all good brands for a $200-$800 price range. Of course Bulova and Seiko have models that go into the thousands as well. Bulova and Seiko both have a great history, and orient is not as old but still recognized as very solid quality watches. Fuck Archie and his snobbery. My father has the discretionary income to buy an Omega or Something of the sort but does he? Nope. He owns one Seiko skx and he's in love with it.

I’d say these watches are decent and nothing wrong if they are inexpensive. As long as you like the watch, that’s what matters. I recommend anything less that $2000 you can get a nice mechanical Longines, Tissot, or even some nice Seiko divers. If you want iconic, the Seiko Turtle Prospex divers are a good choice. There are also some vintage Omegas you can buy. Again buy what you like, and don’t buy something to show off or to get an expensive timepiece into debt. I’ve had more enjoyment wearing lower and mid tier than an expensive watch. Whatever makes you happy is what matters.

Piaget is one, and you can find them cheap, which says something about the resale value of quartz watches in general. Buy one and save your money for a real watch for your next purchase. Then sell the quartz which may even make you money if you buy a top brand.
Sometimes the truth is better. However you gave him some options to follow and it's up to him to decide whether to stop collecting watches or continue.
