I'd rather sit alone in the rain under a Patek cardboard box wearing a Patek than sitting in a fancy home filled with friends and family without a Patek You can't buy family and friends but you can buy a Patek. Buy the Patek.
They are not lousy investments. They aren't investments at all. You invest to make money. You buy luxury items like watches with the money you make in order to enjoy life
Watches never were an investment. Typically you lose half your money when you walk out the door. Years ago people bought one watch they kept a lifetime so value retention was never an issue.
I always wondered why Panerai costs 7000+ dollars when they just use a derivative of Unitas 6497 movement, which you can buy for 200 dollars. You can even adjust it yourself to achieve COSC precision in timekeeping.
I only have one Rolex for personal wear. I got lucky I bought a half kilo gold Cuban link chain and bracelet in 2001 when gold was cheap, but will never think about selling. This things you don't "invest", you enjoy but if things go wrong in life then you sell.
This isn't news, wristwatches have only recently been marketed as "investments" and even then only the rarest models go up in value. Modern watches are like modern cars, they all depreciate.
My gray dealer offered me 4,500 on a trade a few years ago for my 1983 single quick set Day Date Bark bracelet. My wife paid 7,500 for it used back in the early 1990's. I never bought a watch as an investment. I buy land, gold, silver and stocks as investments. Jewelry is a bad investment. Sooner or later Rolex is going to price themselves out of business.
Used to be a flipper and about 9 years ago had to stop because even pre owned got way out of hand. The small margins I was making as a hobby were no longer there. Use to buy late 90's 14060's for $200-2200, clean em up and flip a week later for $2400-2500. Not much but it was fun. Then Rolex went nuts and all else followed. I remember buying bond seamaster auto's 41 mil for $800-1000. Those were the days so I can see where he's coming from but it happened a long time ago
The real enjoyment is in the affordable watches... you can buy variety and a lot of excelent brands and models. Luxury watches is like buying and carring raw eggs is so difficult to handle......
A luxury wrist watch is NOT a terrible investment IF YOU BUY IT AT THE RIGHT PRICE ... My uncle's business was in trouble and he needed cash BADLY ... He sold me his 100% Genuine with paperwork Rolex Submariner for £2,000 GBP in 2016 around $2570 If you manage to catch people when they BADLY need money you can buy items at bargain prices.. His debt problem was MY GAIN.
OH GOOD GRIEF can we please take up a collection to buy his IWC and then throw it into the ocean, so that we can hear no more of this bellyaching about how the market is soooo terrrrrrible.
I think I am in a different universe. To me spending £260 on a Seagull Ocean Star was a big decision. I will wear it until I or it dies. To me it's a super duper watch. 200m dive watch. Sapphire chrystal. Solid end link bracelet. I love it and wear it all the time.
With 'Fiat' printed money societies, buying most ANY non-perishable commodity, will be a hedge on long-term inflation. Worthless non-backed paper (Historically over 600 fiat currencies) always fail ! - "Wrist watches as an investment, suck!" True, but only in the short-term...
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
This advice is TRUE. The delivery of the message is unconventional but the content is TRUE. Luxury watches are not an investment. Only 5% of the populations should really indulge in this hobby. If you are not a 5%'er, then just buy one luxury watch and make it a Rolex, waterproof sports watch. It is a brand and model that holds it's value better than most. If you are wealthy (no debt and over $5MM in net worth) buy whatever the heck you like. But is you are like most of us, follow this advice.
All the mass market luxury stuff were never an investment in the first place, it's just sales propaganda to clinch the deal. Only the collectible ones like rare ultra high end models at the tip of the pyramid and vintage do increase in value, but no average person can afford those. The average Watch no matter how costly is just another piece of consumer product like a car, a suit or a designer bag, u take your depreciation and move on, its never meant to increase in price.
You've been very philosophical lately big boi. Have you been taking your medicines regularly? ;) On a serious note, you are right. Watches are investment only at super high levels of collectability like these crazy PPs and Rolexes sold on top auction houses. Other than that they are just great timepieces that deserve to be worn and enjoyed
Amintas Neto everything that is on "super high end levels of collectibility" are GREAT investments because they are super expensive to begin with.only a small amount of people in the world can actually afford to buy in, in the first place. so the rich just keep selling to their already rich friends, this keeps the investment opportunities out of the hands of the public. basically in order to make big money without a skill, you gotta already HAVE big money.
Generally speaking, jewelry of almost any kind is not a good investment, including watches. I buy watches because I like how they look and enjoy collecting them. If I want to invest in an asset that will appreciate, then I will buy blue chip stocks, which not only have a good chance of appreciating in value but also often pay dividends and currently typically have 1-4% dividend yields.
Watches are investments like shares are investments. The price of Watches like shares can go up or down in value and some investments keep going down - bad investments, the good investments go up in value. So really its about what you invest in, what you pay, how long you need to hold onto it and of coarse, when to sell.
You cannot expect a dealer to sell you a watch for, say, $7,000, then buy it back a few years later for $7,000 and sell it again a few months to years later for $7,000. If you want to get your $7,000 back, or something near it, you need to sell it yourself.
Ordinarily, a timepiece is not an investment. A fine watch serves three purposes: 1) To tell the time, 2) Serves as a personal accessory, 3) To keep and treasure as a prized possession. You buy a fine watch because you enjoy it, and appreciate its workmanship, style, function, and beauty. Bottom line: Find a watch you genuinely love, buy it new, and keep it for the rest of your live. Only then, do you get full value. Make your choice wisely!
The bubble is about to burst on everything stocks, bonds and real estate. Luxury watches are the first domino to fall. Look out for some watch bargains in the coming years.
Is it the same as people telling me since like 20 years that any month the whole financial system etc. will break down, people rioting in the streets and you need to build a bunker and fill it to the brim with food, toilet paper and tooth brushes, because that is the real valuable stuff then - oh and weapons, so you can shoot the zombies which will be constantly running after you?
SoramimiKeiki, it's just another scam to sell you gold, silver, bunkers and guns. the financial markets will always correct after a while(years), it's healthy, the cycle will then reboot with money printing, followed by tightening(getting rid of the excess money) no zombies involved. just get out of the way before the down cycle.
@Lassi Kinnunen Some people. It's unfortunate and I do feel bad for them, on the other hand, they have to pay the price for greed and not being aware of their own limits. I used to be one of these "some people", I paid my "school fees", it's a learning process. Some people have the benefit of wise financial mentors, I am not one of them. If we somehow prevent them from losing money in stock market, they will still be tricked to buy precious metals at all-time highs, and if we managed to prevent them from doing that, they will be tricked into something else. If they are not capable of introspection, there is not much we can do for them.
watches aren't for quick flips. I don't believe the mechanical watch market is doomed, I mean look at when the quartz watches came on the market, everyone screamed doom and here we are. I'm 36, and I only took an interest in collecting watches last year, fresh blood in their 30s are always going to get fascinated and bitten by the horology bug ;-)
Instead of focusing on the surviving watch companies, you must account for all those which died or were acquired. Go to fhs.swiss and pull the statistics. Total watch sales have been downhill since 2000 with no let-up in sight. We are still at negative eight percent YOY.
So why is a rolex a good investment, if you can buy over 60000 on chrono24? They arent rare at all, for some exceptions of course, but thats maybe one of a thousand
That what I tell my Custumers in hvac the service cost my cost more that the unit it self if the want the lower cost units. And still cry. Fix it your self. Expensive watches have never been so available for regular people
Excellent video Archie, and good to hear your thoughts on this matter. For us boys who work really hard to earn their piece this is valuable information. I for one don't care much about being shafted, so if i were to spend several thousands of dollars on a watch I too would go with a Rolex. Best Regards, Manny
Finally you just realized that watches, LV bags and commodities are not an investment, much less a "good" investment.Either you just listened to Dave Ramsey about "anything with a motor in it" or finally after all this years you suddenly woke up.Those things are either just a toys or a hobbies, but NOT an investment. All these things are just a liability, not an asset. These things are for "Enjoyment" purposes only.Good video.Thanks.
I like your review, I need your advice , serching for the following specifications. 1, an automatic watch which is 38mm dial, 2nd, white or blue dial, May be day & date, That shown power reserve, Made is Japan, Swiss, or Germany,( No chinies). The most important is The most accurate compair to quartz. I hope u can help me to find. Appreciate in advance.
He really knows his shit but his content is 98% unhinged mentalism and recently PP. He’d by far be the no.1 watch chancel if more of his stuff was like this.
The Swiss industry have been bashing quartz for decades in the interest of self preservation and everyone has bought into it. But no service costs, higher flexibility, more reliability and robustness in quartz and it's clear that it is a sensible choice. Maybe it's time to question the current quartz stigma. After all, watches are first and foremost a piece of jewellery. Market comes seconds and movement a distant third And who cares about resale - buy it, wear it and hand it on.
Depends on the watch! The guy who bought the Bao Dai Rolex for $235k is now 5mil richer. Seems to suggest the market is on its way up! But new production watches..yeah, definitely hard to see any possibility of long term appreciation.
Another great video. I think people should look at luxury watches like luxury cars. Very rarely do they appreciate...buy them for yourself and if you get lucky and can make money off of them consider yourself lucky.
love this guy i don't buy investment watches i just buy what looks cool to me to keep. sexy automatics are only few hundy these days so if the service is more than the watch i just buy a brand new one. that being said I've never sunk over a grand on a watch. Bulova 98a179 gunmetal rocks my wrist and have never lost a wink on my $500 keeper. absolutely love it.
I also have a 1954 Omega. Solid gold watch and bracelet. 266 handwound movement. 18000bph. Family heirloom so the family can sell it to pay for my funeral assuming gold doesn't go down anymore. I am 73 now so who nows. I recommend people invest in their own mental and physical health.
Thank you for your honesty Archie, you are a watch lover and you states that watches are terrible investments. I think watch collectors should buy watches because they love them not for the resale value. I don't think people should invest more then $10,000 in a watch because the watch value is going to depreciate. It is better to collect watches then collecting cars, clothes and shoes. Those items depreciate more then watches. The watch industry is not going to die because young people doesnt care about watches. When those young people get in their 30s they will not care as much for electronic gadgets like the IPhone and Samsung Galaxy and they will start collecting watches. Ancient coins collecting is probably better then watch collecting.
1200 for a fucking iwc service.... 2500 for a fucking ap service.... fucking hell mate!!!!. I must tell you that this is your best video everrrr !! Keep up the good work
I have to choose, spending my money on an expensive car or on a sports Rolex, i would get a Rolex. After let's say five years the car is worth "nothing" but the Rolex would still maintain a pretty good value. Certainly comparing it to a car or an expensive vacation for instance.
Luxury watches are ridiculous if you really think about it. Makers like Patek make watches for the love of horology. They put their heart and soul into it. Proof? For as long as they've been around, they've maybe produced a million watches. They won't be rushed, and it shows. The only watches that hold their value... Sort of. I mean, they're still not worth the 5 or 6 figures new. I've learned the hard way and now I buy watches I think have a unique quality. My latest purchase is a Bo Bo Bird Q27 wood watch. It's affordable, attracts a ton of attention and does something what all watches do... gives me the time!
you know the shitter watches sell damm good i can buy a raymond weil for $100 bucks and turn around and sell for $400 all day long i think maybe thats the way to go???
If you've discovered that kind of arbitrage, why in the world would you ever tell anyone else about it?! Since you are now telling us about it, I infer you are lying.
went with your advice and got an omega man on the mood and the batman. My next watch would be a Tudor black bay chrono or a new datejust or sky dweller then it's time to stop spending money on watches
Archie skipped the Mercedes, fancy home, fancy summer home parts, and went straight to the Patek part
Lmao, correct.
Ill stick with my seikos and casios while my business keeps getting bigger
I'd rather sit alone in the rain under a Patek cardboard box wearing a Patek than sitting in a fancy home filled with friends and family without a Patek
You can't buy family and friends but you can buy a Patek.
Buy the Patek.
Patek: It's for old people to buy before they die.
@@chanslorvalorum6905 he died 5 times, the man is the devil look at his horns.
They are not lousy investments. They aren't investments at all. You invest to make money. You buy luxury items like watches with the money you make in order to enjoy life
Spot on!
Indeed
Tell that to anyone with a Paul Newman, a vintage Speedmaster or even a lowly early 90’s Rolex GMT-Master...
So true.
Lassi Kinnunen What do you mean by that ?
Watches never were an investment. Typically you lose half your money when you walk out the door. Years ago people bought one watch they kept a lifetime so value retention was never an issue.

Archie,
Watches are consumables.
Like cars, they depreciate.
Life is short, buy what you can afford, enjoy what you wear.
Your so right, I whether spend a few hundred on watches and put the right in fun times with my family 👌🏿👍🏿✊🏿😁😨
An Education is an investment. 👍🏿
In about 3000-5000 years that iwc will get its money back, just keep servicing it regularly
yes thats the best part of the investment scam, it does not appreciate in value, but still demands a rent
I only have one Rolex for personal wear. I got lucky I bought a half kilo gold Cuban link chain and bracelet in 2001 when gold was cheap, but will never think about selling. This things you don't "invest", you enjoy but if things go wrong in life then you sell.
watches are not investments, gold silver stocks 401ks are investments, warren buffet did not get rich investing watches.

I agree with you, however the reason to buy a watch is for your enjoyment, not to make money on it.

Your gray dealer is a rip off merchant..
Yep that's why I walked. I never did the trade. I'm glad I waited. The new 40 MM Day date looks good with the new ceramic pins. He did me a favor.
appreciate you 100% honesty as usual Archie

the moment he said "let me give you an example" we all knew he was going to show us the IWC
That is why you should only have steel Rolex sport in stead of different many other brands.PP incl. (Except 5711).
Great advice. Words of Wisdom. Thank you.

His debt problem was MY GAIN.
my goodness you have a valid issue
I consider most all watches as durable goods, not an investment. Buy what you like and wear it daily or in rotation with several others.
Holy Shit. This is ART!
Just because the IWC dont sell, the market is not broken.
Nicholas Mork
He thinks the watch market revolves around his second hand sales, lol
life hard, economy down.
Probably bought the IWC for too much too....
OH GOOD GRIEF can we please take up a collection to buy his IWC and then throw it into the ocean, so that we can hear no more of this bellyaching about how the market is soooo terrrrrrible.
lol we should everyone pitch in $5 bucks we would have that thing in the ocean in no time.
Best comments you have ever made.
Arch, watches are never investments, they are luxury goods. You might get lucky on a watch but that's not investing.
I think I am in a different universe.

I whether spend a few hundred on watches I like than thousands. I whether create memories with my family 👌🏿👌🏿👍🏿
If you get the correct watch at the correct price, you can make money. They are out there. Shares ? lost thousands, Watches ? lost zero.

So after watching this entire video I just have one question. Are wrist watches a good investment? :)
Archie needs to start reviewing kickstarter watches to keep up with the NEW GENERATION
Nobody gives a shit about the new generation
Shitters all of them
Very insightful video....love your honesty and your refusal to take yourself seriously....
Don't buy a watch that you cannot afford. Rich people buy watch for love, not for investment.
I'm 58 !! I'm taking Archie's advice and asking the DSS for a patek.
Archie's on a depressive state of his bi-polar, the world is closing in on him..

1. Never buy an expensive watch if money is tight. 2. Never sell watches to a dealer. So what? The watchmarket did and will not change at all.
The big boy is letting the punters know the truth. If you want something to retain value buy preowned steel rolex. If you don't care buy whatever.
Or you could -- you know -- invest in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and real estate... like the rest of the world does.
Hey Archie, Do you think wristwatches are a good investment? Not sure where you stand on this.
You cannot expect a dealer to sell you a watch for, say, $7,000, then buy it back a few years later for $7,000 and sell it again a few months to years later for $7,000.
If you want to get your $7,000 back, or something near it, you need to sell it yourself.

Still heartbroken over a watch that had to be let go 10+ years ago. At least I was able to break even after 2 years of ownership.
I remember $1700 pams.
Do you know about the ex-British, now Swiss Vertex and Breamont
Not anymore!
A lot of wisdom in this video.
Jose Cantu he has turned negative. Theres thousands of grey market dealers succeeding.
went with your advice and got an omega man on the mood and the batman. My next watch would be a Tudor black bay chrono or a new datejust or sky dweller then it's time to stop spending money on watches
C'mon, guys. You know you need some Pluta to balance out the Pontiff. Wisdom drop at 7:16.
