This video goes over how to replace a rear caliper and brake pads on a 2012 Volkswagen Passat SE 2.5 motor. This should be the same process for any North American VW Passat 2011-2018. This is something that is universal and should apply to almost any vehicle on the road with disc brakes. The brake system in your vehicle is the most important safety feature. It’s important to understand how it works and how to maintain/prevent any issues before the vehicle becomes unsafe to drive. Calipers use hydraulic pressure supplied by the master cylinder to apply pressure to the brake caliper, which in turn squeezes your brake pads on the rotor to stop or slow your vehicle. This process is the same for the front calipers as well. Signs of a caliper failing are if the vehicle pulls to one side when the brakes are applied, squeaking or metallic noise coming from the wheel, the smell of something burning when you stop the vehicle, higher than normal heat when you put your hand by the rotor/wheel, uneven brake pad wear, clunking noise, leaking brake fluid by the tire, or the caliper totally seized and not allowing the wheel to even turn. Once the caliper is replaced, the ways to bleed the brake system are gravity bleed or pump and hold. The rest would require purchasing specialty equipment.

Thank you for this video. My sister has an 03 Passat W8. I looked at everything on it before and it looks pretty similar to this. It will really help me when I start this for her this weekend.

Is adjusting the parking brake really necessary after changing the caliper? Seems like a lot of extra hassle and I have yet to see anyone do it.

With a automatic transmission I would say no, I've only had to do it a couple times in 45 years. Unless you live/park in extremely hilly conditions, most people never even use their parking brake.

Hopefully you didn't damage the threads in the caliper. If the threads are OK I would mount the caliper and then start the new bolt by hand so it doesn't get crossed threaded.

For stubborn/rusty bolts we often use torches. And if you don’t have torches I would use a Bernzomatic Ts8000KC premium torch kit. Of course be careful, but that should work.
