How to Replace Mass Airflow Sensor Lexus IS 250
**Check out the tools we used below. If the video was helpful, please give it a "thumbs up" and consider subscribing to the channel.**
This video goes over how to clean or replace a MAF Sensor on a 2006 Lexus IS 250 with a 2.5 motor. This should be the same process for any 2006-2013 Lexus IS250 with a 2.5 motor. A Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) determines the mass of air entering a vehicle's fuel injection engine, and passes that data to the Engine Control Unit (ECM). Without an accurate signal from the MAF sensor, the ECM won’t know how much fuel to give the engine. That can either cause the engine to run rich (too much fuel) or lean (too little fuel). The engine's computer uses the MAF sensor to determine how much fuel is to be injected to meet the proper air/fuel ratio. It compensates for weather, altitude or your various driving conditions. Signs of a bad MAF would be a check engine light, poor idle, hard starting, misfiring, a change in fuel consumption, or lack of engine performance. A lot of times if your car is performing poorly or not starting, you can disconnect the mass airflow sensor. The vehicle will then switch to limp mode and then the car may idle or start better, thus proving your theory that the mass airflow sensor isn’t performing to the proper factory specifications.

You saved my ass mate thanks a lot
You’re welcome!
I have the 2016 TLX with the AGM battery, and my best advice is to turn off the engine idle stop function prior to driving. It has a tendency to kill batteries because of the amount of energy it takes to shut down and restart the car. Acura had a recall for this problem with the solution of changing the software to have the shut-off happen less frequently. I turn off this function every time before I drive to preserve my battery function.
Good to know, thanks for the tip!
Thank you!!!! ❤❤❤❤Your method was wayyyyyyy better than the screwdriver BS.
You're welcome!
Hey so i dont have any check engine light for these codes but my g37 has like a delay when accelerating do u think i should clean the MAP or what should i do?
Hi, it's really hard to diagnose without a PO code, there are so many things that can affect the acceleration of a vehicle. It doesn't hurt to clean your map sensor or replace it, but it's kind of a shot in the dark without a PO code.
Thanks buddy
You’re welcome!
Did you put the 5 mm hex screw back in the in the rotor?
yes
I appreciate your style and straightforward way of presentation. It is direct but not without color. Helped me out!
That’s the goal. Glad it helped!
What where the symptoms the car was having for you to clean the airflow sensor?
If you notice issues like rough idling, poor fuel economy, or a check engine light, cleaning the MAF sensor can be a good first step. Cleaning is often effective if the sensor is dirty but not damaged.
this is a super helpful video! im pulling my hair out with a 2010 corolla - intermittent CEL, ABS, VSC, wacky revving, twitchy or dead speedometer, lack of shifting, speed sensor and P0500 codes. sometimes all or a combo happen, sometimes it runs like normal! getting to last resort of "is it the ECU"? --if it is im glad to find this vid with the link to the folks in NY you got yours from. did it work as advertised 'plug n play' after the reset cycle? thanks!
Thank you. An illuminated Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is typically the initial indication of a faulty ECM. However, as the MIL may also indicate other issues, such as a malfunctioning sensor or a wiring problem or a battery with a dead short. It's important to use a Scan Tool to verify that MIL illumination is a result of a faulty ECM before proceeding with repairs.Yes, the ECU worked as advertised.
Thank you! Your instructions were the best!
You're welcome!
I have an issue, five minutes after starting car, rough jumping idle. Up n down. Changed throttle two years ago. New belt and ac compressor this january. New egr valve last year. Just cleaned throttle and maf sensor today, battery was disconnected like it should. Hooked everything back up, started car and it still did the up down idle after five minutes. Its like the car dont like cold weather, but today is in the 40s. Im out of ideas. Oh, a snake sound like sssss happens every 10 seconds near engine
Sounds like a possible vacuum leak, check all your hoses.
@TheAutoTeacher ok, ill inspect. The sound isn't like an air sound, or hiss. Its more like glass on the ground and someone steps on it and drags their foot backwards, like a scraping but audibly it's like a "shhhhh" but not consistent, it goes away, comes back. If not a leak, what else?
Miles?
@@TheAutoTeacher 151k. I bought a new pcv valve. Damn that was hard to take off. Do i put dielectric grease on the end of it to turn it in easier?
Would this work on a 2015 q50s ?
Yes
are both sensors from bank 1 sensor 1,2 oxygen?
Bank 1 will have an upstream oxygen sensor and a downstream oxygen sensor if that's what you're asking.
It is the same procedure for a Captiva 3.0, 2011?
The procedures should be very similar.
Did you have to reprogram the new battery?
No
Why do they tell you to take the whole panel off?
Not sure, auto repairs can be done in a variety of ways depending on the complexity of the issue, the tools available, and the mechanic's experience.
@@TheAutoTeacher I'm gonna try it. If you are wrong I'm going to be super mad. lol.
I purchased a brand new 5 year warranty pro series 94 at part source in Canada and the vent won’t fit into the battery
First make sure the battery is correct for your vehicle!! Batteries often have a specific size for the vent tube opening. If the new battery's vent hole is different in diameter or design than the old vent tube, call the auto parts store to check if the new battery is correct or comes with a specific vent tube or adapter to fit your application. Most auto parts stores will carry battery vent adapters.
Very well explained,thank you
You're welcome!
Hello I have a 2000 Camry 2.2L V4. I have a check engine light, scanned it with my pro scanner and reads P0420 “Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1. Which sensor do I need to replace , please help
Hello, unfortunately their are many reasons for a PO420 code, it most likely indicates a faulty catalytic converter. I would start with the oxygen sensors upstream and downstream one at a time. Depending on vehicle mileage, a poorly running motor caused by spark plugs/exhaust leaks and fuel injector problems can also throw a P420 code. As long as the P0420 is the only code and the engine runs normally then driving the vehicle is not a problem.
I have a 2009 vw rabbit with the same engine and there's a second coolant temperature sensor on the lower radiator hose, driver side. How do I replace it without loosing a ton of coolant. Will the air get into the system?
Removing the coolant temperature sensor on the lower radiator hose you will lose a majority of the coolant. I would jack the car up and use a clean bucket and remove the lower cooling hose hopefully catching most the coolant. Once drained ,you can then replace your coolant temp sensor and reinstall the hose. YES, to bleed the cooling system, leave the car on the jacks so the the coolant tank is the highest point in the system ,take the coolant tank cap off and start the car .While the engine warms, it will "burp" all the air trapped in the system through the coolant tank, watching closely the cars temp as it rises, to make sure the engine doesn't overheat. At some point the coolant will be so hot that it will start to boil out of the coolant tank, then put the coolant tank cap back on.Once the engine cools down repeat if needed, until no air bubbles are seen in the coolant tank and the engine temp is stable.
Very helpful thank you.
You’re welcome!
Sorry - another one- I’m seeing generic replacement sensors that appear to be all black plastic. The oem version has some white plastic and maybe less material on it. Are the generics a good, (less expensive) option?
You can purchase a less expensive part, just make sure that it's fits the specifications of the manufacture and that it's coming from a reputable supplier.
Great video- question- do I need to disconnect battery? Also does the check engine light automatically go away at some point? How do I know if the sensor just needs to be replaced after cleaning it?
Thank you, no need to disconnect the battery. If it fixes the problem the light will go off after a short drive, or you will need to clear it with a OBD2 scanner. If the light stays on the the MAF will need to be replaced.
What is the part called that’s round with a wire plug in it under it the pcv valve??
VVT Solenoid
Where did you order the pcv valve?
Listed in Parts description through Amazon, or at any automotive retail store.
THANK YOU!! So easy to follow, I’m going to give it a shot. I’ll let you know if it does the trick
You’re welcome and good luck👍
Did you have to change 1 or 2 sensors
Just replaced the one that is malfunctioning.
@@TheAutoTeacher thank you
Have a 2003 3.8. However, when clicking on the map sensor you have listed in details, amazon states it will not fit. I trust your excellent demo vs maybe a wrong listing, but curious your thoughts. Thank you.
At the time of the video it was correct, not sure what might've changed on Amazon. Make sure you include all your vehicle information and the part number to make sure that you get the correct part for your specific vehicle.
Wanted to follow up. Part you list worked fine. Not sure why it listed as not. Thank you for your walk through, as well as your reply and help. Already subed and liked
Thanks for the video, it was useful.
You’re welcome!
nice🎉
👍
thank you!!! I was able to do this myself and i am so proud
Congrats and you’re welcome!
Great video & straight to the point very detailed! What tool is that I am far from a mechanic, sorry.
Thank you, a 4-Way Battery Terminal Cleaning Tool and a socket set with various extensions.
Where did you buy the thermostat
Advance auto parts, some manufacturers are now offering a aluminum version of this.
Recharged today our LeSabres AC exactly the way you have shown. Works very well now. Thank you very much for the visual.
You’re welcome!
What grease you use
Lithium grease is a top choice in automotive applications due to its exceptional resistance to water, oxidation, and corrosion.
Thank you
You're welcome.
Can you use carburator cleaner
No, carburetor cleaner is too strong and can damage the delicate plastic parts inside a MAF sensor ,it also leaves a residue that impacts the sensor's operation.
What is the small tool you used?
It's a short 1/4 ratchet with a 5.5 socket .
What is the lil plastic tube at the button of the air filter towards the front of the car
It's just for supplying fresh air to your air filter box.
Is this the same procedure for a 2013 gs turbo?
Yes, it would be the same basic principal, the only difference would be if it has electronic dampening then you would just have to plug/unplug .
Yes mine is
Time to replace it!
thank you ❤🎉
You’re welcome!
Thank you very much
You’re welcome!
Thank you.
You’re welcome!
Thanks! I was hoping to re-use my old hoses but wasnt sure about those factory plastic clamps. Now I am!
You’re welcome!
I received p0138 code "heatedsensor bank1 sensor 2" is that the next one following the pipe? I have a 2.4 liter should only have 2 total correct
You have two oxygen sensors on your 2.4 Toyota motor. You will want to replace the one after the catalytic converter for the PO138 code.
@TheAutoTeacher thank you. I just watched it live on my hour ride home. The sensor 1 is bouncing around 3.o volts which is crazy high I heard and the 2nd(downstream) wasn't reading any this morning but I tapped on it , uplugged and plugged back in. That was reading at steady speed around .4 to .5 and the waves on the graph seemed consistant. I think I'm just going to replace both. OH and my STFT stayed under +8 and -8.
So if my Infiniti g37 has this code , replacing the sensor makes it go away? Or is there something that could be further causing it
P0345 stands for “Camshaft Position Sensor “A” Circuit (Bank 2). It could, but there are other underlined timing/ wiring issues that could also be causing the problem. It's a good place to start.
I have a Monte Carlo clicking from the glove box but only when the air comes on is that the aquator?
yes
@ thank I appreciate it. They are trying to charge me 200-600 to find and fix it.
Best way
👍
My car loses power mid drive and refuses to accelerate until I turn off and turn on again and Igot p0016 code.chatgpt thinks this might be the problem.thoughts?
It might be worth considering as a potential culprit. A malfunctioning or clogged solenoid can affect the timing and cause the P0016 code. The P0016 code stands for “Camshaft Position A - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1)”, which means your crankshaft and camshaft are not in sync. The most common causes of the P0016 code include a damaged timing chain or belt, a faulty camshaft or crankshaft reluctor wheel, and a bad camshaft or crankshaft sensor.
