My favorite subtlety possibly lost with time is that the Half-Life hazard suit didn't start out as some symbol of heroism. It's safety orange. For work safety.
When I was a kid and had some small funds saved up, I walked into a GameStop on a random day and purchased Half-Life solely based on the box art. I knew nothing about the game going into it. It turned out to be a very good investment of my limited funds. So, I guess box art sort of mattered at least back then. Either that or I just got lucky with a purchase.
This is a great video but i wanna comment on your portal remark at the start: i was probably in the minority in that i was more excited for portal than anything else in the orange box because we publicly knew so little about it for such a long time. I watched the teasers multiple times and breathed in this dark ambience they had. All i knew was you were in some desolate facility performing "tests" while a creepy voice talked to you and that was so unlike anything i had seen or played. Really great job by everybody on those teasers.
Hey Chet, Very Unrelated but have you ever shared your thoughts on games directly inspired by Left 4 Dead such as the Vermin/DarkTide Games or the Payday Franchise and more specifically your thoughts on the different directions they took the L4D Formula in?
Picture this: if the box was just "3 game franchises in one box. The orange box" with the number 3 and Valve logo most prominent. That would acomplish both, be bold and sell very well, I imagine.
I have weird theory, that Valve love orange & blue colors. Here the proofs, i've noticed in Valve games: Number One: Half-Life 1 (1998). In lambda core area, there's two separate corridors, guess what colors of walls in these corridors? that's right! orange left corridor & blue right corridor. Number Two: Half-Life 2 (2004). The Gravity Gun, most of the game, since you receive this weapon, you had Orange colored Gravity Gun, but after the Citadel removed your equipment, but charge the Gravity Gun into Super Gravity Gun, which is Blue colored Gravity Gun. Number Three: ??? Number Four: Portal (2007) The Portal gun has Orange & Blue Portals. Well, that's it, folks. P.S. Please, Excuse Me for My Bad Knowledge of English Language. 😊 Valve, I love your games. Thanks to everyone who reading this. I love you too. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

"Nice camouflage, asshole!"
-H.E.C.U. marine in Black Mesa game
I’d argue that could also be considered a symbol of heroism in a sort of way
@@justdark863 that was retrofitted onto HL2 when Freeman evolved from incidental survivor to messianic legend.
Okay, BUT who came up with the idea of "Military Green" for early steam?
Satan
@@chetfaliszek Satan being on Valve’s payroll is a hilarious thought.
@@chetfaliszek I KNEW IT!
Now I imagine that red devil from South Park series strolling casually through Valve's office haha
Wasn't that because they were copying Half-Life's UI?
I thought it was partially a joke based on the fact that the black box on a plane is actually orange.
Valve's White Album
ooweeoo i look just like gordon freeman
I still have my Orange Box dvds and case, what a legendary deal it was back then
I still have an AMD poster advertising if you buy an AMD card you will get a free preoder for the valve "Black Box"

Go Browns! 🎉
That is a pretty funny story. I always wondered sometimes how things just mesh together and it's usually great at the end.
That reminds me to ask, have you been involved with alien swarm at all? Nowadays it feels they pretend it didn’t even exist
I have no idea what alien steam is.
@chetfaliszek Alien Swarm* typo sorry
Was very happy with the release, fun little game and kickstarted by programming career
People Google Image search Orange so they aren't pale in videos
Should have been a ball of steel.
