It's funny you mention this only a day after I saw a video from Adam Savage's Tested where he talks about a thought he had that made solving problems where he disagreed with someone a lot easier. The specific quote was: "Do I need to solve this problem now, or will the world solve it for me later?" And that feels identical to your explanation of wanting to bring up this design flaw, but then realizing that playtesting would put a spotlight on it for you already. That's really cool, great minds think alike lol.

It's a bummer that the game side of the crossover fell through but the special infected cameos in the film always get a smile out of me. It's a shame the game mode has to remain under wraps too, I would love to see if the modding community could make a rough version of it just to see what it might have been like.

(This is a probabilistic distribution: I am not playing all of these, but I am *likely* to play any of these) I got The Beginner's Guide, Human Resource Machine, 7 Billion Humans, Baba is You, and Shadows of Doubt in the Steam Summer Sale. Definitively finished the first three of those. Also playing several early access city builders on their experimental branches: Timberborn, Stardeus, and The Wandering Village. And a bunch of city builder-like games I played previously are getting big updates in the next few months: Oxygen Not Included, Factorio, and Satisfactory. Also "playing" Melvor Idle, but you don't really "play" an idle game the same way you "play" any other game.

4:00 If the Steam forums are such a nightmare, then why is it that they aren't being shut down? They're a giant waste of server space in general, and developers don't interact much with them in the first place. Ever since Valve took down the rule against banning politics, things have gotten even worse as a result. There's nothing to truly be gained from them, and it would be greater for the health and the benefit of everyone if they just disappeared, as it's a festering social media hub which hasn't given back to either developers or consumers in meaningful ways. Just my two cents.

It is what it is, Chet-meister. It is a kind of interactive experience where its players manipulate electronic outputs to achieve desired outcomes. It involves at least one player with specific goals, electronic equipment, and a game designed to engage, entertain, enlighten and challenge the player's skills. It is crafted to assist the players in achieving these goals within a dynamic system perceived as winnable, where the player's actions visibly impact outcomes. It is a success when its players consider it engaging, agreeable and fun. It is something one might find terribly boring or mildly amusing sometimes, and at other times it is, like, kind of fun or whatever. Something like that.

Hacknet - fantastic hacking hacking simulator, hits this perfect compromise between Hollywood dramatization and a general sense of realism that makes the game quite immersive. Still under 5 bucks when including the dlc which I also recommend. The talos principal - first person puzzler (definitely inspired by you-know-what) generally good puzzles, terrible hint system (but that’s what walkthroughs & steam guides are for 🤫) fantastic story and philosophical angle. So those are my two recommendations…. …but the og deus ex is dirt cheap and easily one of the best games ever made FTL will probably always be my favorite rougelike the fallout classic collection still has a fantastic atmosphere and disco Elysium’s writing is fantastic.

Besides OG Valve title? Cheap classics include Far Cry, Sleeping Dogs, Witcher titles, System Shock 2, Papers Please, old Resident Evils, killer7, FFVII, Enter the Gungeon, Streets of Rogue (personal seal of approval), Deus Ex (how I clamor for a remaster), the newer but not the newest Doom, Disco Elysium (how I lament the devs' treatment), Jazzpunk if that's your thing, the Monkey Island series, old Max Paynes, the first Blood, Isometric Fallouts, and indies or adventure games that catch your fancy like Simulacra. Man I wish Steam could handle huge wishlists, so I can actually prioritize it.

I've seen a lot of people be angry about video games in ways that indicate they're not playing the same game in the same universe I am. I don't know who's in the wrong universe, but the one I'm in has some pretty good early access games in it. Also, there's been weirdly little vitriol sent the way of my game compared to what some similarly sized good games in the same genre get. I don't know if it's purely because my game is free, that it runs on low-end hardware, that it's very difficult, or that it gets monthly updates, but *something* we're doing is making the game attract way fewer angry people than I would expect.

This EXACT thing you talk about was also stated by Dave Oshry of New Blood on Noclip podcast. They had a huge cashcow which is ULTRAKILL that has funded a slow but steady release of similar indie titles. They seem to enjoy the slow burn of making a couple interesting games rather than THE biggest game ever.

Teardown is another solo-developed singleplayer game that had a similarly-confusing drama pop up around it recently. The guy decided to get a publisher because making a game on a custom engine by yourself is very hard, and that publisher then provided some extra help to work on expansions that are like, absolutely huge and practically their own games within Teardown's engine. It's really cool. But the amount of backlash he got just for getting a publisher and even doing paid expansions was crazy. It was a minority, sure, but a vocal one that was trying to be as loud as they could, it was obnoxious lol. It was a whole cacophony of complaints like "The game doesn't have enough content, and you want us to PAY for more?" even though the base game is like 10+ hours already, has replay value, and full mod support. There were people complaining that any kind of additions should just be free updates, regardless of the base game's size. And there was of course that one crowd that thinks multiplayer is an easy thing to add and should just be in every game by default. I don't know a lot about netcode, but i'm pretty sure it would be literally impossible to add multiplayer to Teardown lol. But anyway yeah this sort of thing sucks, I agree. A lot of it comes from this mindset that every game needs to be live service in some way, but what really sucks is when players also buy into that idea. EDIT: I know that wasn't entirely the same situation as this, but I still felt like sharing cause I think it sorta fits in with the idea of people who are doing things mostly solo and being successful, but getting backlash for it without any real reason.
