Tree Lines : Fat Bike Trials

  • Four years ago I came to these woods at Cathkin Braes just south of Glasgow and scouted lines for an edit I wanted to make. Sadly due to very limited conditions needed to have dry enough logs and my vlog schedule I put the project onto the back burner.
Then the fat bike came along and I realised the extra grip would be a huge advantage on some of these slippery lines and the extra width could make riding skinnies a little easier...turns out I was right!
Don't get me wrong though, these lines were TOUGH! I try to do minimal correction hops to be as smooth as possible but this can give the illusion that these lines were easy or not that big... check out my wobbly knees in a few clips to get a true indication of how I was feeling!
In the end, after a 4 year wait it only took two days of riding to complete. These were lines I saw when I shut my eyes and every time I went to Cathkin and I never thought I would be eventually doing them on a fat bike!
As mentioned in the video, this is presented by Light Bicycle carbon rims and I have been using their 26er Drift rims (85mm outer) on this bike with no issues.
If you'd like to know more about these rims or others in their range then please check them out with this link https:bit.ly/lightbi...
Please consider subscribing and clicking the notification bell to get updates on when I upload, hit the thumbs up and drop a comment to let me know what you think!
I'll have a vlog out shortly explaining more about these lines and some of the bloopers I had along the way.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone! I see my mauled legs are getting a lot of attention…surprisingly that wasn’t from my pedals but instead it’s hours and hours of riding off piste and getting stealth brambles caught on my legs, those things are so sharp and would just shred me…very annoying!
Also people asking about my fork, I do have a vlog coming from this video where I’ll explain all.
    Cheers!

Ali, we’ll done. The time and effort put into setting up and moving of cameras, incorporating the drone footage, and selecting the music to maintain the vibe you’re looking to establish, are all impressive.
That is before the riding even enters the picture. Inch-perfect when ‘on’ and decidedly human in other shots. You’ve always been good about showing that trials is hard, and that to make it look effortless takes years of dedication and commitment… and even so, it doesn’t always go to plan. Thank you for taking us on this journey with you. Keep the vision fresh.

Well, Ali, I didn’t think that was you alone doing a 3-camera shoot... I thought you’d got a crew in, paid for by your sponsors. That was superb (and I’ve had 4+ decades working in professional video!) I bow to your skill on and off the bike.

Super impressed Ali. The balance of music and trail sounds; the drone shots to segue between spots; but mostly, the satisfaction of seeing something as incongruous as a fattie riding along shooglie branches. That was ace!

Proper video! As a former pro/open singlespeed racer for two and a half seasons, my entry was a fully rigid 11.78kg fatbike with a 30x19 ratio. I won the series in 2017. Seeing your video-although my XC racing did not involve any trials specific skills-brings me back. Without a doubt, tubeless FBR/FBF Minions for the winion on 65mm wide carbon tubeless rims. Yet Mr. Clarkson, you take it to a whole new level. Mere mortals are dumbfounded when you slay the trials skills on the proverbial ugly redheaded stepchild, the fat bike. Your skill and determination are always inspiring.

Absolutely love your content, Ali. Super refreshing to see edits from someone that rides at such a high level, but makes use of terrain that many of us have access to. Much more relatable and refreshing than watching insane bike park edits and such over and over, because I can ride down the street and have something to practice on with inspiration from your videos. Keep it up! The fat bike and full suspension trail bike content has been awesome…

Some of that stuff was pretty nutty! Total bike control and trust during some of these moves. I just did a video about learning some of the trials basics. During that video I talked about how important having the rear wheel hop dialed for more advanced trials moves........and yeah, this video shows how important that is.

@@danielgosselin9930 the old "Jaws" dolly zoom! I actually figured that out by accident, I had no idea you could do that effect in the editing, I thought it had to be shot in camera. I'm pleased you enjoyed it either way :)

Wow Ali ! This is amazing. Really Like what you did there. Those 360 zoom shots from the beginning looked amazing. Great way to implement those. Gonna take notes. Great Music , and edit. 🙃

I had experimented with draged out Keyframes as well , old video , old riding, but maybe you can get some inspiration as well 😀

Thanks Oskar! I was a little confused when you said 360 shots but now I’ve seen your video (thanks for sharing, I liked the vibe) I understand what you mean.
I didn’t actually use a 360 camera though…this is a DJI mavic mini with just a wide angle lens. I got the dolly zoom effect by just starting cropped in and reducing the crop whilst the camera was moving forward. I had no idea this vertigo effect was possible when editing clips, I thought it was only possible to capture in-camera by zooming out whilst moving forward and it was purely an accident I found out I could do it with my footage 😊

@@Ali_Clarkson Cool ! Wouldnt have guess that this is just due to the wide angle. Quality looked non DSLR or similar. Thats why i thought it must be a 360 cam. As you see in my old video , you have more control with the amount of wide angle correction. But its a hassle to edit as you propably know :D And again great video Ali !
