Building a "new" 100 year old Barn | E68 S3

  • Would you live in a horse barn? What about one that looks like it was built 100 years ago? I visited my friend DaddyKirbs to check on his Dream Barn project and I was very pleased to see the progress and also the possibilities with this type of structure. I think this type of Barn would make a very nice alternative to a log home. It was very interesting to see that the size of the wood is the same as it was 100 years ago. Enjoy!

Eric, Thanks for the tour! This is really cool! It's interesting that this is the old school version of what you're doing. Converting or building timber-framed barns into homes is really the same thing you're doing, only with modern materials. You use steel instead of timber. If the opportunity arises, you should try putting together one of these. The state of the art manufacturing produces a kit that's mostly cut to order. Yes, there is some fitting, but it's all modeled on the computer. The fact that this guy, his 2 sons, and a couple friends were able to get the building to the level of completion in 3 days? That's just amazing! Man I wish I lived in Texas!

I looked at doing this with a kit from Sand Creek Post and Beam, the structure is not too bad, but the erection cost's were through the roof! 4 times the cost of the building material. That was just the frame... everything else would still need to be done, wall framing electrical etc etc way too much SO I went with a metal building. But I love the post and beam look, love it!!! Erik you should start doing these too!

Just to clear up a very common misconception about lumber sizes. When you pointed out that the 2x4 on that barn was a true 2" by 4" you failed to point out that they were ruff cut all saw marks still there.
When you buy lumber you buy it by the size it comes off the mill so when you go down to the lumber yard or box store and buy a 2x4 and it measures 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 it is because it has been all cleaned up planed down and edged no saw marks relatively smooth and to get that 2x4 off the mill a nice and clean and the exact same size requires having to plane about a 1/4" off every side. If DaddyKirbs had decided he did not want ruff cut and planed and jointed all that wood down his 2x4s would have measured 1 1/2 x 3 1/2.
The Lumber companies are not scamming or ripping people off they are selling you a nice cleaned up 2x4.

I'm building a board and batten horse barn this summer (high profile) modular. It is 30 X 30 with a 10 foot overhang. I am paying $66,000 (installed) for everything except site prep (concrete pillars and gravel, then a 10 x 30 concrete centerisle). This is another $4,000. Does this sound like too much? Stall grills are expensive, so are stall doors with yoke fronts. They bring the modular on a flatbed, slap on the roof and you're done in a week. Has anyone bought a prefab that can tell me how it worked out for them?

    • @kellyinfanger9192

I build post frame buildings in Idaho, and that sounds really high to me, but my buildings usually have metal siding. Your post doesn't say where you are, so I don't know anything about your area. Maybe call the National Frame Builders Association. I don't belong to their Association, so this isn't a plug for anything I am biased toward. They would be familiar with contractors in your area that build similar buildings through their membership records. My impression is that these types of building contractors are very competitive and therefore it should be a terrific value for you if you get someone who specializes in post frame construction.
