I'm an Arsenal fan and Keown embarrassed me big time calling Kane a national hero. A hero gets the job done and gives the country something to be proud of. Blazing a big penalty over the bar the way he did does not make him a hero to me. A hero is someone like Saka or Rashford who bounced back from a disappointing moment (euros penalty misses) where they were accused of letting the country down yet bounced back to be two of our best players this world cup and had fans demanding they play every game. Mbappe scoring 3 penalties past a keeper who's better at saving them than Lloris really made me rethink Kane's miss. The top players get it done. Penalties can be saved but there's no excuse for not hitting the target.
Would he have missed if he'd been facing a keeper he plays with who has known him for almost 10 years though? Because I'm sure that would have been running through Kane's head too on top of the other pressures. Probably why he missed the target altogether.

Simon Jordan is spot on with his analogy for the simple fact that Harry Kane fluffed his lines because he was asked to take his second penalty in normal time against his club colleague.
Mbappe in a World Cup final at 23 showed what Harry Kane should have done in the QF. He didn’t even get it on target. Those are the moments where unfortunately he’s shown he’s not quite in the absolute upper echelon of top world class forwards. Of course anyone can miss a penalty but look at the careers of Messi and even Mbappe (still only 23) - you can’t compare what Kane has achieved in terms of trophies to them. Kane hasn’t won anything unlike those two and he has had opportunities as well. The Champions league final where he was essentially non existent, World Cup semi where he missed a massive chance to go 2 up against Croatia and now this pen in the QF.

I think Simon is right, and I thought the exact same watching Mbappe take those pens. Kane is captain, he gets paid quarter of a mil a week, a player whose supposed to be up there with the best of the best, and he buckled under the pressure. We saw with Messi, his flexibility and repertoire. He can absolutely nail a penalty (like Kane can) but he can also stare down the keeper and roll the ball in the other side of the goal. Being able to switch it up and do the unexpected is what separates the good from the greats.
I was not surprised in the slightest that Kane missed the 2nd penalty. You could see the terror etched on his face.
My biggest gripe with Kane lately is how deep he drops for England. We need him in and around the box keeping defenders on their toes and being available for crosses but he seems like he wants to be in midfield more these days and why Southgate and the coaching staff aren't telling him where he needs to be is really grinding my gears.

Harry Kane for me is a good PL player, but he lacks that cutting edge at the highest level. If he wasnt brittish, no one would be singing his praises.
There was a slightly different psychological battle for Kane since he was facing Lloris, who knows him so well. People are treating the penalty like it stopped us from winning. We would have just lost in ET afterwards or on penalties. The fact is we were always playing catch up and were relying on pens to get goals. Maybe we should have scored in open play like France did.
His lack of pace is too much me. for put him number 10 role and put a forward or 2 ahead of him and take captains arm band off him. he cant talk and southgate keeps playing Henson as his leader so just make him captain already.
@@L1am21 Kane is not the problem. The problem is not having more quality like Kane. He's our only world class player. If we did then we might not have needed him to convert 2 penalties.

I wouldn't judge Kane just on a penalty miss. If anything blame Southgate for asking his most prolific striker to also be the playmaker and defender. Mbappe does virtually nothing when France doesn't have possession but is lethal when they attack.
I love Simon and Martin’s synergy a lot more than any other. Martin is calm and respectful - you can tell that Simon respects Martin and likewise
Speaking slowly with a low voice doesn’t mean someone is calm and respectful. It could also mean they are slow at forming a response or loves the sound of their own voice, like Keown.
Let’s not forget that Harry Kane is an outstanding player who’s scored nearly 200 PL goals for Spurs. We all see that Mbappe is a level above with him delivering in the big moment and Kane doesn’t but we gotta remember that every player is only human at the end of the day. misses can happen

As harsh as Simon makes it sound he is right. When you are a leader like Kane is those moments are what you are needed for. When the goalkeeper makes a brilliant save that's life he guessed correct and saved it. Kicking it like a Rugby conversion is another story. Empathy and sympathy for those earning 250k a week and only want praise and no criticism.

was the manner of the miss that begs the bottle question, was a bleedin rugby conversion, highly unusual for a player with such an awesome penalty record. Being the 2nd penalty he asked to take quite quickly after the first, in such a momentous occasion with so much on it possibly a new experience for Harry and new experiences can screw people up at first. As such don't think he bottled it, just didn't have the know-how at that time to deal with such a new situation

My estimation of Martin Keown as a man has plummeted since joining TalkSport. I thought that he was a true leader of men, after all he was in one of the greatest footballing sides in British football history. Yet here, he talks like a fucking wet lettuce. It's an absolute disgrace
